00:31Hello, everybody. It's Countdown on Wednesday afternoon.
00:34Fifteen rounds of letters and numbers coming your way.
00:37And thank you so, so much for tuning in.
00:39That's the most important thing. We never take it for granted.
00:42So thank you very, very much. Hello, Rachel.
00:44Hello, Colin.
00:45Finalist one quickly under, oh, my goodness, time flies.
00:49Today's World Otter Day.
00:51So it's a year since...
00:53Do you remember I told you about otters putting food in their armpits?
00:56A year ago. That's crazy.
00:58Well, I didn't buy you flowers or chocolates or fish or anything.
01:03Yeah, yeah.
01:04Well, talking about gifts, that's what I'm going to talk about instead of otters.
01:07Actually, we talked about that last year.
01:09Two big birthdays today in the music world.
01:11Mel B of Spice Girls fame is 49 today.
01:15Noel Gallagher of High Flying Birds and Oasis fame is 57 today.
01:20They're both having parties tonight.
01:22You can go to one. Which one are you going to?
01:24Can I choose Mel B?
01:25Yeah. Why?
01:26I mean, I think I was probably more on the Spice Girls bent than Oasis back in the day.
01:32I think she's great, isn't she?
01:33What are we buying her? We'll go together.
01:35A spice rack. I bet you nobody's ever done that.
01:37Oh, no. I bet she's got just a whole room full of spice racks.
01:40And that's a cool enough. Thank you.
01:42Most of the people that have bought them saying never again to the next party.
01:45Yeah. Well, listen, there's no spice rack like the spice rack that's owned by our Dictionary Corner guest this week.
01:50So we will spice up our life right now.
01:53Because joining our G of the D, Susie D, is the musician, the businessman and the chef.
01:58It's Levi Roots.
02:00Yeah.
02:01And I love Mel B. I've met her and she's absolutely fantastic.
02:04You're invited to the party as well.
02:06Susie, you're going to have to go to Noel's party.
02:08We can't all go to Mel B's. You're going to that one.
02:10I will. If you'll have me, I'll be there.
02:12Happy birthday to both of you.
02:14Our champion is Crono Yoon, who lives in Hackney in London.
02:18Two wins in the bank already.
02:20How are you today?
02:21Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you.
02:23You're Kylie Minogue lover.
02:25And you said that you love running in cities because you think it's a great way to see them.
02:30And you've managed to run all over Europe.
02:32What's your favourite city to run around?
02:34Well, I did run for Paris and Barcelona.
02:39It couldn't be any better. It was perfect.
02:41Right. Well, let's see if you can give another challenger the run around today.
02:44John Dowling is hoping that's not the case.
02:47He lives in Donard in the beautiful county.
02:49Wicklow, how are you, sir?
02:50I'm good, thank you.
02:51Good. That's the only thing I'm going to talk.
02:52I don't want to talk about you.
02:53I want to talk about your daughter, Rachel.
02:54She's why you're here.
02:55She is why I'm here.
02:56I knew nothing about her until about three or four weeks ago.
02:59So she phoned me up one day to let me know she had applied on my behalf.
03:04So is that fraud has been committed here?
03:06But I'm going to overlook it because you're also a family of hikers.
03:09And she's dragging you up, I think, is it the highest peak in all 32 counties in the island of
03:15Ireland?
03:15That is Rachel's plan, and she is dragging me up as many as she can.
03:20How many have you managed to go up so far?
03:22So far, I'd say I've only done six or seven, but Rachel has done a lot more than I.
03:27Listen, good luck today.
03:28John and Cronom mountains to climb.
03:31Let's get on with it.
03:34All right, champ, let's go again.

04:56Rootages.
04:56Yes, I was just checking this one.
04:58It is in the dictionary.
04:59It's not specified as being a mass noun, so totally fine.
05:02I think plants will have different rootages, different root systems,
05:05so very good indeed.
05:07APPLAUSE
05:09All right, Levi, what can you add?

09:58So, yeah.
09:58And a vowel.
10:00The word.
10:01It might not be good, but it might be good.
10:06It might be good, but it could be good.
10:06Yeah, absolutely.
10:08The fact of it to this is on a second
10:08John? Seven. Seven, well done. And Crono?
10:12I will try seven, not written down. Not written down, OK.
10:16What's your word, Crono? Bacia, F-U-S-S-I-E-R.
10:19And for you, John? Same word, yeah. Pass it on over.

10:28Excellent. What can we add to that seven?
10:30Yeah, an eight is floating around, purifies.
10:34Purify. All done. On the board, John.
10:37That's the key. Now it just rolls from here.
10:39Crono, you're choosing these letters.
10:41May I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Crono.

11:45Crono, give me a number.
11:46Seven. Seven. And John?
11:49Six, not written down.
11:50So, what's the six? Counts.
11:52And the seven? Touches.
11:54Touches. Very nice.
11:55Levi, what have you got?
11:57Outshawn for eight.
11:58Outshawn for eight. Excellent.
11:59All right, 38 plays seven on the numbers again, John,
12:03but you're in control.
12:04Can I have one large and the rest small, please?
12:07You can indeed, another one from the top.
12:09Five little combo.

12:58Oh, I missed it.
12:59Missed it. Oh, unlucky, mate.
13:01Crono?
13:01913.
13:02913.
13:03Missed it by six.
13:04Off you go.
13:05Four minus one is three.
13:06Four minus one, three.
13:08And then times three is nine.
13:10Yeah.
13:11And then...
13:12Oh, I missed it.
13:13It should be 914.
13:15Ah.
13:15Yeah, nine plus 100, and then with the ten and the four.
13:19Missed declared, I'm afraid.
13:21Has indeed.
13:22Balls left to kick themselves.
13:23919, Rach.
13:24A couple of different ways to get there.
13:25One of them, 100, take away the two fours.
13:29Here's 92.
13:30Times it by ten for 920.
13:33And chip off another one.
13:35Yeah.
13:35919.
13:36APPLAUSE
13:39Thank you, Rach.
13:40Levi Roots back in Dictionary Corner all of this week.
13:43I love when you come in the Dictionary Corner, there's always like a whole load of new things
13:47to talk about and a whole load of things we talked about last time.
13:51Now, yesterday, we were talking about you arriving here, living with your granny, and
13:56then your mum and dad sending for one child at a time to come to the UK.
14:01OK, so part of the Windrush generation.
14:04And last time you were here, you were telling us about the campaign for the Windrush National
14:09Museum.
14:10So what has happened with that since?
14:13Well, it's some great news, Colin, because, you know, as I said last time, if I ever wanted
14:17to be remembered, yes, for making sauces and stuff, but to campaign for a national museum,
14:23that's something really special.
14:25And I'm proud to announce that after, you know, mentioning it last time, on the 24th
14:31of November, last November, in the House of Lords, I invited over 200 people, most people
14:39with titles to their name again, which was brilliant, and they turned up to sign an MOU
14:44with the National Greenwich Museum for the National Windrush Museum to be inside of the
14:54Maritime Museum, which is absolutely amazing.
14:57And as you mentioned, my parents were a part of the Windrush, you know, my mum came over,
15:01my dad came over, worked with the NHS, but I think for Windrush, these heroes, as I like
15:07to call them, because I look at my mum as a bit of a hero, to come over, work so
15:11hard in
15:12the NHS, but never really got recognised for that.
15:15And I think that when you're talking about recognised for doing something for your country, if it's
15:20not in a museum, then young people can't really know about it.
15:23Correct.
15:23And we've never really had a museum that tells the story of immigrants from the Caribbean
15:29that's non-slavery.
15:30And I think it's really important that these heroes that came over did something really
15:34special.
15:35So for me, it just was a joy to be in the House of Lords and seeing all these people
15:39turn up to sign this, you know, this MOU.
15:42And I'm just so happy that I've done something that I know my mum and dad, who passed away recently,
15:48would be extremely proud of.
15:49Their stories, and, you know, thousands of other people that came over as well too, will
15:54be told in a proper museum in the near future.
15:57Fantastic.
15:58Levi, great work.
15:59Thank you so much.
16:04Great stuff.
16:05Love having Levi in Dixon re-corner as we get back on with the game.
16:10A good start for a champion.
16:11But let's see, because John will settle in.
16:14And Crono, you're picking these letters.
16:16May I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
16:17Thank you, Crono.
16:18Thank you, Crono.
16:19Another.
16:21M.
16:23And another.
16:24N.
16:26A vowel.
16:27I.
16:28And another.
16:29O.
16:30And another.
16:32E.
16:34And a consonant, please.
16:36V.
16:38And another.
16:39C.
16:41And another consonant, please.
16:44Lastly, D.
16:45And here we go again.
17:17Crono.
17:17Just a six.
17:18The six.
17:19And John.
17:20And six.
17:20And six as well.
17:21Great stuff, Crono.
17:22Nicked.
17:23And John, for another six points.
17:24Minced.
17:25Yes, minced and nicked.
17:27Yes.
17:27Now, could you nick the points with a seven?
17:30Yeah, a couple of sevens we had.
17:32My best one is invoked.
17:34That's lovely.
17:35And demonic is there as well.
17:37Nice.
17:38Invoked and demonic for crazy sevens.
17:41As we get more letters from John Darlene.
17:43Can I have a consonant, please?
17:45Thank you, John.
17:46R.
17:47And a vowel.
17:49O.
17:50And another vowel.
17:52E.
17:53A consonant.
17:55S.
17:56And a consonant.
17:59R.
18:00And another consonant.
18:03H.
18:05A vowel.
18:07A.
18:14And a vowel, please.
18:17Lastly, O.
18:18And start the clock.
18:19?
18:34S.
18:50All right, how many did you get, John?
18:52Seven.
18:52Seven from you, and for Crono?
18:54Seven, I suppose.
18:55Well done, well, well, fine.
18:56John, pharaohs.
18:58And for you, Crono?
18:59Hoopers.
19:00OK, so start with hooper, that is in the dictionary.
19:03It's an old-fashioned term for a cooper.
19:05And that would be somebody who made casks and barrels
19:08for alcohol and other liquids.
19:11Pharaoh, you need two Hs.
19:14So it's P-H-A-R-A-O-H.
19:17Oh, what a shame.
19:18Sorry, John.
19:19Great word.
19:19Great word to spot, but not in there.
19:21But hoopers gets it done.
19:24Were you scraping the barrel in that one, Levi?
19:26Yeah, nothing more than a seven, Sarah.
19:28Sharper is another one.
19:30All right, I'll move on then.
19:3151-13, back to the numbers.
19:34Crono, you're up again.
19:36One large and five small, please.
19:38Thank you, Crono.
19:39For the third time today, the old one large five little combo.
19:43And this time they are 10, 7, 6, 9, 7, 100.
19:50With the target of 296.
19:542, 9, 6.
19:55Numbers up.
19:55We're coming.
19:57We're going now.
20:03Pray.
20:15Bye.
20:18Bye.
20:19Bye.
20:20Bye.
20:26296, Crono.
20:27296.
20:28Yeah, and John?
20:29297.
20:30297.
20:31That's a huge one.
20:32You've missed it by.
20:33Crono will get these ten points.
20:34Off you go.
20:35Nine minus six is three.
20:36Nine minus six, three.
20:37And then 100 times three is 300.
20:39Yeah.
20:40And then seven plus seven minus ten is four.
20:42It is indeed.
20:43Only way I could see.
20:44Well done.
20:45296.
20:46Yeah.
20:49Let's get a second tea time teaser of today.
20:52It's kite folk.
20:53Kite folk.
20:55What a mouthful.
20:56It's all Greek to me.
20:57What a mouthful.
20:58It's all Greek to me.
21:15Hello again.
21:16What a mouthful.
21:17It's all Greek to me.
21:18That would be kleftical.
21:20Kleftical.
21:20Type of Greek food, I'm assuming?
21:21Yes.
21:22It is a Greek dish consisting of lamb marinated with lemon and herbs and cooked very slowly.
21:27Well, let's not stew on that.
21:28Let's get back to the game.
21:30And John, you're choosing these letters.
21:32Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
21:34Thank you, John.
21:35G and a vowel.
21:39And a consonant.
21:42And another consonant.
21:46And another consonant.
22:00And a vowel.
22:03Please. And lastly, aye. And good luck.
22:39So the time we have, John, how did you get on?
22:41Five, not written down. No worries. And Crono?
22:45I'll try a seven. He's going to try a seven.
22:47John, what did you not write down? Doing. And what are you trying?
22:51Demoing. Yes, to demo, to demonstrate there is a verb.
22:54Well done. Excellent. Can we add anything else?
22:57Just one more seven from Australian English.
22:59You know how they love to add IE on the end of everything.
23:01A youngie is just a young person. Goodness me.
23:03Goodness me. Right, more letters please, Crono.
23:07You're flying along again today. May I have a consonant, please?
23:10Thank you, Crono. W. And another.
23:14N. And another.
23:18P. A vowel.
23:22U. And another.
23:25E. And another.
23:28I. Consonant.
23:30T. T. Consonant.
23:34D. And a vowel, please.
23:39And lastly, A.
23:40And let's play.
24:13That's it, Crono?
24:14Just a six.
24:15And for you, John?
24:16Seven.
24:17That's it.
24:17Wouldn't it be great to get one over them today?
24:20Let's see.
24:20The six, Crono?
24:22Pundit.
24:22Well, eat this.
24:23Here we go.
24:24Painted.
24:25Yes!
24:25Come on!
24:28Yes, John.
24:29Come on, Crono.
24:30You just sit there quietly, please.
24:31Anything else, Levi?
24:35Seven's petunia.
24:36Oh, nice, little flower.
24:38Lovely little petunia.
24:39Just seven's for us, though.
24:40Good.
24:40Well done.
24:41Seven points for John in that round.
24:44Four rounds still to play as we get our origins of words,
24:47our midweek origins of words, Susie.
24:50Yes.
24:52There are many words used for exclamation Alex Baird has written in to say,
24:57like, oh, my days and goodness me.
24:59But I recently heard on television, oh, my giddy aunt,
25:02and I thought you might be able to explain where that came from.
25:05Very much used by my grandmother,
25:08and I think my mother as well.
25:10Oh, my giddy aunt.
25:11And obviously it's a euphemism,
25:13and it's one of many, many euphemisms
25:14to avoid using the Lord's name or God's name in vain,
25:18which, as I often say,
25:20was a big, big taboo for many centuries.
25:23So I looked it up.
25:25First of all, the word giddy is quite an interesting one
25:27because you have to go all the way back to the idea of somebody being...
25:31We had demonic as a word just a few rounds ago.
25:34Demonically possessed, so possessed by a god.
25:37So the giddy bit was actually goddy.
25:39So the idea was that you were behaving erratically,
25:44sort of maybe swirling round and round,
25:46and, yeah, and you were possessed.
25:48Now, this sounds very strange,
25:50but actually a lot of our modern words are based on that idea.
25:53So a fan, a football fan,
25:56is obviously a football fanatic,
25:58and fanaticus in Roman times was, again,
26:01somebody who was possessed by a devil
26:03and then behaved extremely strangely.
26:04You might say he applies to quite a lot of football fans.
26:07These days.
26:08A ventriloquist was somebody equally thought
26:10to harbour a demon within them,
26:12so it goes back to the Latin for speaking from the stomach.
26:15So the idea was that it was this demon
26:17that actually was speaking from within.
26:21So a lot of them are wrapped up in that idea.
26:24The earliest references in the Oxford English Dictionary
26:27are all from Rudyard Kipling.
26:29So he used giddy to mean kind of slightly erratic,
26:34slightly fantastical, if you like,
26:36in many of his early stories.
26:38So he says,
26:39I spoke the giddy truth in one of his novels from 1899,
26:43and then another one,
26:45King'll have to prove his charges up to the giddy hilt.
26:48And then the first reference to,
26:51Oh, my giddy aunt, as an exclamation,
26:54is from The 39 Steps,
26:55the most brilliant novel by John Buchan.
26:58And then it just took off from Lennon.
27:01It became one of the most popular euphemisms
27:03or exclamations that was considered to be polite,
27:07with little sense, I think,
27:08that it all goes back to this idea of being possessed by a god.
27:12Love it.
27:13APPLAUSE
27:15Great stuff, Susie.
27:17I think it's Crono who's feeling the giddiest at the moment in the studio.
27:20Four rounds to go.

30:26Yes.
30:27It's beautiful.
30:28So it means gilded in Spanish, and this is a gilded fish.
30:31An edible marine fish of warm seas,
30:34and very bright blue or green colouration when it's alive.
30:37Yeah, there you go.
30:37Right, 80 players, 27, as I say, those 20 points for Crono.
30:42It has a little bit of nerves to it, if you can get to that century.
