Cone, Ramos dismayed by 27-point loss to Australia

Gilas Pilipinas suffered a 27-point, 66-93 loss to Australia in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers second window at the Mall of Asia Arena on March 1, 2026. Coach Tim Cone and wing player Dwight Ramos express dismay over losing with that big margin at home. Cone and Ramos said Gilas' poor second half performance coupled with Australia's hot outside shooting keyed the visitors breakaway.

00:00Well, it was a very painful one.
00:04It was a very painful second half.
00:06Painful to be a part of, painful to watch.
00:10Especially being in front of our home crowd.
00:13You know, we wanted to be better than that.
00:15I thought we played a really good...
00:18We did everything we wanted defensively.
00:20We held guys down.
00:22But when they started to stretch the lead a little bit,
00:25got some open threes,
00:28you know, a couple turnovers on our part.
00:30I think we just kind of deflated
00:32and lost our energy.
00:35And it was hard to chase those guys.
00:39You know, they're the number five team in the world.
00:43And it's amazing, you know,
00:44the players that they can just bring over
00:48and be that good.
00:52We had Pepper on our sights,
00:54but we couldn't stop Pepper.
00:58Creek played really well.
00:59Handled the ball well.
01:01Wilson played well.
01:05And like I said,
01:06I thought we played a good first half.
01:09I felt like we should have had the lead
01:10at the end of the first half.
01:12We just didn't make some of the shots that...
01:15It's been a struggle for us both games
01:16that we played, you know, shooting the ball.
01:21And we didn't get some of the shots that we wanted.
01:23And we went down by five at halftime.
01:27But we felt we had a good shot.
01:28We came out third quarter,
01:29made a turnover right off the bat.
01:31And they turned it into a three-point play.
01:33And suddenly, you know,
01:35they were off to the races.
01:37Very, very painful here at home.
01:40You know,
01:41just doing that in front of the whole crowd
01:43was tough.
01:45Hey, Coach,
01:46do I have your thoughts on the game?
01:48I mean, I agree with Coach.
01:50The first half,
01:51we played good defense.
01:53The game was close, you know.
01:55And then,
01:56going into the second half,
01:58you know,
01:58we just had to step it up a little bit.
02:00I guess they just came out with more energy.
02:03And a couple of our mistakes
02:06led to their threes.
02:07And then they were just on a roll from there.
02:09So,
02:10it got away from us.
02:11And it just,
02:12it's a bad feeling to lose by that much at home.
02:16But,
02:16I mean,
02:17a loss is a loss either way.
02:18You lose by 30,
02:19you lose by one.
02:19It doesn't feel good.
02:21So,
02:22you just got to keep improving.
02:24And then,
02:24you know,
02:25we're going to play them again
02:26in July.
02:27And we got to be better by then.
02:30Thanks,
02:30Corey.
