United Nations plane lands at Khartoum airport for first time since war began

A UN flight landed at Khartoum airport on Thursday, the first since Sudan's nearly three-year war began, the UN humanitarian coordinator for the country said, calling it "a big deal" for aid workers trying to reach millions of Sudanese in need.

00:18Cities there were besieged for months before the army lifted the blockade in recent weeks.
00:25What it means when a city is besieged is that humanitarian supplies don't go in.
00:29That's a violation of international humanitarian law.
00:32The economy breaks because commercial trucks and supplies are also not getting in.
00:39People lose their jobs.
00:40People lose their homes.
00:42People lose their lives.
00:43Sudan's army and the paramilitary rapid support forces have been fighting for control of the
00:48country since 2023.
00:51Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced.
00:54That there are consequences of war.
00:58And it's the people of Sudan who feel those consequences.
01:01And in particular the women and children of the Sudan who feel and live those consequences
01:07of war.
01:07So again, world leaders, I would like to urge them with the utmost urgency to address ending
01:18the war in the Sudan.
01:20A passenger plane landed in Khartoum earlier this month for the first time since the war
01:26began.
01:27The capital is slowly beginning to recover since the army retook it in March of last year.
