Multiple storm systems will track across the middle of the U.S. from March 3-7, coming just in time for spring tornado dangers.
Transcript
00:00Well, as we jump into the early part of next week and kind of focus shifts from some snow and
00:05ice into northeast back into the southern plains,
00:07we're going to be stepping into a time with severe thunderstorm potential, some damaging winds, some hail, localized flash flooding,
00:15and also the risk for tornadoes.
00:16It is that time of the year. Early March will be here, and we're going to be dealing with flow
00:20out of the Gulf, a dip in the jet stream, cold air aloft,
00:24and we're going to begin to see some thunderstorms erupt in many of these areas here right across Arkansas and
00:29the Ohio Valley,
00:30the lower Ohio Valley at least, and the Mississippi Valley.
00:32We need to keep an eye out for that area into the middle of the week, and then into Thursday
00:37you can see where we land.
00:38So there's going to be kind of an extended stretch where multiple disturbances will move through this part of the
00:44country,
00:45and again, we have Sunday as the first, so the third would be Tuesday.
00:50And then through the rest of next week, there's going to be potential for severe weather as multiple storm systems
00:56track from New Mexico and Colorado up into Illinois.
01:00South of there is where we have air to greatest concerns.
01:03Here's Texas up into the lower Ohio Valley.
01:05We're getting to that time of the year.
01:07You know, it's been a pretty wild winter with a lot of snow and extreme cold.
01:10Many are looking forward to spring, but just keep in mind as we step into the month of March,
01:14we do see this big annual escalation in the tornado frequency.
01:18It's just the way it is.
01:20It's a fact of life here, and it's a little bit lopsided, maybe perhaps not what you would expect.
01:24A lot of us in the Northeast, for example, associate summertime with thunderstorms,
01:29and certainly in the orange here, the most frequent time for thunderstorms nationally is generally in the summer.
01:35But the tornado frequency is greatest in the early half of the thunderstorm season.
01:41So it's spring, March, April, and May into early June because there's a little bit more volatility in the atmosphere.
01:47Cold air aloft at times and some wind shear.
