Australia's first class for Deafblind students in a mainstream school has opened up. The class was set up after ABC News reported on a family struggling to find the support needed to enrol their son in their local public school. Jarrod Sandell-Hay, the Vice President of People with Disabilities said it was a step in the right direction.

00:01This is fantastic for Ari and his family.
00:07It goes to show that when a little bit of effort is made, it supports in place what the outcomes
00:19could be.
00:21Unfortunately, it takes a lot of effort, mostly from family and mostly from mothers, to really push for inclusive education
00:37for their children with disabilities.
00:41But this is a fantastic example of just why it's so important.
00:47And what are the main considerations in including kids with a disability at a mainstream school, in your opinion?
00:56So I think that when we are considering if people with disabilities have a right to inclusive education, the answer
01:09is always yes.
01:10And then the next question is how do we do that?
01:17Governments, state governments need to step up.
01:21They need to reflect the recommendations of the Disability World Commission.
01:28And they need to do a better job and a faster job of implementing those recommendations.
01:39Because inclusive education, as that story, really does benefit everybody.
01:47Other pupils in the school system will learn what disability looks like and they'll carry that when they leave school
01:59into their work life, into their communities.
02:06And it's inclusive for people with disabilities, but it's also inclusive for everyone.
02:12Is it becoming increasingly common or not for kids with disability, Jared, to go to a mainstream school rather than
02:21have a more specialised education?
02:23So there's really three tiers to what it was.
02:28There's the participating students that are lucky enough to go to mainstream school.
02:35There are students who, for their own choice or because they have to, believe that special schools are best for
02:52them.
02:52But most often that's not an informed choice because they don't know their rights or they don't know where to
03:01find the support.
03:03And then there are a third group of kids.
03:07And these are the people that I really, really am concerned about where they're bullied at special school to stay
03:18home because their needs are not being met.
03:22And then the parents are bullied by the education systems to keep them home and to keep them homeschooled.
03:33So there's really this vast difference of experience between all of it.
03:39But from my experience, when I used to be at special schools, there weren't a lot of options.
03:48There are a few more these days, but we really do need to see more people in mainstream schools.
