00:00and what's happening what's going on guys how are you hey it's so good how are you feeling up in
00:05boston what's the weather like is it cold is it pre-spring what are we feeling well it's cold
00:10we're getting snow tonight but despite the obvious sunday's detrimental whatever um it was good it
00:16was good nice well i'm very excited because you guys are back with a new song after nine years
00:22which that sentence alone feels kind of wild to say aloud how does it feel hearing people say
00:28welcome back again it's so nice we like i'm like just keep saying it you know we we feel so
00:34amazing
00:34to be back it's the nine-year thing i always sort of like raise my eyebrows on that too it
00:39feels like
00:40it's just been you know a day to be honest i mean fair i was seven years old obviously
00:47i'm almost 21 now so we'll celebrate
00:52it feels great though we're so excited so you kind of answered there but it feels like a reunion it
00:57seems like or is it picking up where it kind of left off i think we're calling it a rebirth
01:02you know um no we call this band perry season two you know we have always been a family band
01:09since day
01:10one always will be um this go around my husband johnny costello baby daddy husband's in the band with
01:17me and it's just been a really sweet season writing a project together we're in the studio with dan
01:22huff just to explore this and experience it as a couple has been so sweet well this song that you're
01:28coming back with let's talk about that because after everything you've lived and written and tried
01:33over the last couple of years why was this the song that kind of reopened that door for you yeah
01:38i've
01:39written a lot of music we've listened to a ton of songs with our songwriter friends here in nashville
01:45psychological has felt to me like the perfect balance between the nostalgia if you love og the
01:50band perry as much as i do um you're gonna find that in psychological if you love what country
01:57music is in 2026 we have so many exciting voices and artists right now i feel like this song sits
02:04perfectly in 2026 with where country music is too and that was really the the balance that i wanted to
02:09find for this first one and y'all know i love a good psycho girl love song so this is
02:15one of my favorites
02:16i've ever gotten to record and the title alone feels pretty intense what headspace were you in
02:21when this song kind of came together so i love it the payoff is boy you make going psycho logical
02:27i
02:27always believe there is a super fine line between devotion and delusion you know i am a girl when i
02:33fall in love first night i ever met johnny i was just like i remember telling him i'm working really
02:38hard to not say i love you right now you know i just i'm a girl who was all in
02:44all all the time
02:45if i love you and i feel like as the narrator of psychological that's our girl here you know and
02:51so this goes out to all of y'all who we can call it psycho if we want i will
02:55wear that badge proudly
02:57when it comes to love yeah well you mentioned dan hoff and you worked with him on the song he's
03:01legendary also honest um what did you put what what did he push you towards on this track that
03:08maybe surprised you i'll tell you what dan put his foot down about that i in the beginning wanted to
03:14be a the sound of a banjo yeah dan was insistent on the piano he we've never really cut a
03:21song in
03:21the band period a that's in a six eight time signature so that means it's like a waltz you can
03:26waltz to psychological um so i thought that was cool but i wanted it to have a banjo at the
03:33beginning and dan was like kimberly you've never done anything really driven by piano that was one
03:37thing that he insisted on i'm so glad he did so was there a moment in the studio where you
03:41were
03:41all together thinking okay maybe this is kind of like the band perry again just older and sharper
03:46yeah i feel like you know we've wisened up over the years i feel like that is the whole
03:51evolutionary process as an artist as a creative as a human being um i feel like we're coming back
03:58into this season too though with for me myself so much more confidence than even i feel like i had
04:05in the early days because in those moments it's sort of like i remember just feeling like hey this is
04:10so
04:11magical at any moment it could go away you know and then i felt this season where it was kind
04:17of like
04:17we went band perry went underground you know i dyed my hair black and cut bangs and stuff and so
04:23i
04:24experienced that season too to be here on this side and do it with the person that i love and
04:28this new
04:29music that i love um it's just so special and i feel really blessed to have this full circle story
04:35honestly going back to the moment that probably a lot of people still remember you guys for um if i
04:40die
04:40young it just crossed into that truly rare territory uh you know diamond certification still
04:45everywhere it's still connecting so kimberly when you wrote that song by yourself did you ever
04:50imagine it would become something this permanent you know i don't think i had any way of knowing
04:54what god's intentions were with this song and i say that because i do think the thing that i did
05:00right
05:00the day that i wrote this song was just be available for it to come and i just call it
05:06the gift that keeps
05:07on giving whether it's totally changed our lives it changes my life every night when the crowd sings it back
05:12to us but i also appreciate that you know in tiktok culture it's like if i die dumb yeah it's
05:18so cool
05:18to have a song that means the whole world to you and have a little subculture of its own you
05:24know i
05:24think it's bigger than us do you hear it differently now after everything life has added since then well
05:29you know and i put out a solo body of work of course a couple years ago and i wrote
05:33an if i die young
05:34part too which felt like a really cool book into the song but we sing the og version in our
05:39show and
05:40it's just really cool to think about where my mind was the day i wrote it and everything that's happened
05:45because of it it's just such a such a gift well back to the today part of it the band
05:49is now you two
05:50you guys are married parents balancing everything how has becoming parents changed the way you write
05:55or even think about putting music out that's a great question i think time management is the biggest
05:59thing we've learned when we see people without kids i'm like whoa what do they do with all that
06:04what do you have what do you have all that time you have yeah time management i think it's made
06:08us
06:09a much more efficient creative writing everything you know you don't have just these endless hours to
06:14sit and sort of ponder what your next lyric is going to be it's sort of like save your notes
06:19on
06:19your phone and when you have a couple of hours to do a shot of tequila or two and or
06:24a glass of wine
06:25and write a chorus you should do that and um but it's been really really fun it's been a wholly
06:29different creative experience now as parents but i'm kind of loving the efficiency we've been
06:35calling it the song right in jail i love it we'll put the baby to bed and we do a
06:38little song right
06:38in jail date night well wrapping up with you guys for fans who grew up with you and are hitting
06:42play
06:42on psychological today what do you hope they feel in the first 30 seconds i hope that you feel that
06:47girl um that you used to sing along with when she was singing if i die young better dig too
06:52um here she is with again a psycho girl love song one of my very favorites and i just can't
06:59wait for
06:59us to all get to sing it together live well welcome to season two of the band perry with
07:03kimberly and johnny very excited the song's fantastic thank you guys for taking the time today thank you
07:08thanks ben
