00:0313-year-old Sarah Maynard was found bound and gagged but alive in the basement of a Mount
00:08Vernon home. Police arrested Matthew Hoffman. They just kept torturing me and torturing me
00:14and torturing me. He said, if you try to escape, I'm going to kill you. My assistant news director
00:19calls me and says, we're getting word that Sarah has been found. I need you to go to this location.
00:27I was free. I know I was free, but I was still scared. I was just a scared little girl.
00:35Matthew Hoffman remains in the Knox County Jail this evening. Her brother Cody,
00:39mom Tina, and her mom's friend Stephanie Spring are nowhere to be found.
00:44I don't know where there's other people are. This is a life or death situation. They need to be saved.
01:00Sarah's taken to the hospital Sunday morning. We saw this blood on the side. We're like,
01:06oh my gosh. Our team broke in and arrested Hoffman and recovered her. She's taken right to the hospital
01:15hospital. And while she's there, then investigators go and talk to her to try to find out what she knows.
01:24As we started telling people, Sarah's alive, Sarah's alive, Sarah's alive, the community is overjoyed.
01:30But then the following question is, what about Tina? What about Cody? What about Stephanie?
01:38All right, Matt, what I'm going to do is I'm going to pat you down here real quick.
01:46Hoffman's in custody and the interviews are beginning. So yeah, a lot of moving parts right now.
01:52I feel the pressure of knowing everybody wants to know the answer to where their loved ones are,
01:58where Tina, Cody, and Stephanie are.
02:02We wanted to know what happened to her. We were hoping that she had some information that would
02:08help us locate the other three people. We don't know if they're alive or dead.
02:23Cody and I went to school, had a normal day at school, came home.
02:31He was like kind of rushing to the steps of the house. And I said, Cody, wait.
02:40So I had opened the door. What felt like somebody was like on the other side of the door,
02:44messing with the doorknob. And so when I had opened the door, I kind of like fell in a little
02:48bit.
02:51I looked down, went to take my shoes off and seen a pile of blood.
03:01I was screaming for mom. Nothing. Didn't see mom. Usually she had greeted us every day when we got
03:05home and she hadn't been there. Well, the dog wasn't in his cage. Didn't see the dog. Hadn't
03:09seen mom. So I proceeded to turn right, which is where the hall is, where our rooms were. And
03:16this man came out and grabbed me by my throat. I jumped through his arms, ran to my room. And
03:26when I got into my room, I seen blood everywhere. There was blood all over my walls and all over
03:33the floor. He busted the door open and then he had the knife at my chest, which had blood
03:39on it. I don't know if Cody tried to run out the door, what he tried to do. And then
03:44the man put me
03:45over his shoulders, took me down in the basement, in the garage, and laid me face down. And he started
03:53asking me a bunch of questions, if anybody was going to be coming to the house anytime soon. And I
03:58said, yeah, my mom's boyfriend. Well, he started laughing.
04:05He tied me, tied my arms behind my back, tied my legs. And I said, ouch, that hurts. And he
04:12said,
04:12I don't care if your arms and legs turn purple. And then after that, he had picked me up, put
04:19me over
04:19his shoulder, took me back upstairs, put me in a sit-up position in the kitchen. And he got like
04:27a
04:27white towel. He put it in my mouth, gagged me. And then he put a towel over my eyes, tied
04:33it.
04:34So now I'm blindfolded. And then he put a pillowcase over my head and tied it.
04:39And then he had pushed me down. So now I'm face down in the kitchen side and blindfolded and gagged.
04:46He asked me if I could see, and I had told him that I couldn't, but it was white. So
04:53I could see a
04:53little bit. I could see that there was groceries still in the bags in the kitchen.
05:02It seemed like an hour or so. I don't know. It seemed like forever. I'd just been laying there.
05:10The only thing I was thinking was, hopefully somebody finds me.
05:14I was so scared.
05:27Water good enough for you.
05:32There's three people that are missing. We found one person. We need to find them.
05:37You know what we want to talk about?
05:41But we need to find some, find some people.
05:45We have two of our lead detectives on the case.
05:48Obviously, we want to interview Hoffman and see if he'll tell us, you know, what happened.
05:58Matt, can you hear me?
06:00The clock is ticking because every person in law enforcement will tell you the longer that this
06:06drags on, the less likely that the people that they're looking for are going to survive.
06:25He puts me over his shoulder and then takes me back down to the basement and then puts me
06:32in a vehicle, before he blindfolded me and gags me, I had seen Stephanie's Jeep in the garage.
06:41And I was like, why is Stephanie's Jeep in our garage?
06:44I didn't ask nothing.
06:46I just had screamed for mom, no response.
06:51And then he had said, if you ask about your mom and brother again, I'm going to kill you.
06:58He had taken off out of the garage.
07:01He was driving really fast and really, like, out of control.
07:05I'm thinking, like, where else is he going to take me?
07:10Like, moving all over the place in the back, like, I'm suffocating pretty much.
07:15I'm blindfolded and gagged at the same time.
07:18I'm laying on my hands being tied behind me, laying on my back, and then my legs were tied.
07:28Then the car stops.
07:42We gotta get this clear up, man.
07:45You know and I know.
07:49You want to talk to one of us alone, or do you want us both in here, or...
07:53You comfortable with both of us being here?
07:57Man?
08:01Man, the sooner we get this moving, the sooner we can get...
08:04We can all move on.
08:06Finally, it became obvious that he wasn't going to say anything.
08:12Man, are you here with us?
08:18We need to reconsider what we wanted to do next.
08:22Man.
08:32I hear him get out of the car and shut the door.
08:36I, like, talk to myself, and I'm like, what am I going to do?
08:39So somehow I knew, so I took my left shoulder and I put my head down, and I, like, tried
08:45to pull the blindfold down and up just so I could see a little bit.
08:50I sat up, and I could see that we were at the baseball fields where Cody and I had played.
08:58A while goes by, I kind of can see a little bit that it was daylight and now it's dark,
09:03so I'd been laying there for a while in the car.
09:06So, at this point, I don't really know what to do, other than if he tells me to do something,
09:11I'm just going to do it.
09:14That's the only way that kept me, you know, alive.
09:19He then grabs me by the legs and then picks me up, puts me over his shoulder, and then put
09:28me in a trunk of another car.
09:30And I was squished.
09:32I couldn't move.
09:36He unblindfolds me, but I'm so God.
09:42And then he just starts driving all crazy and fast, and he says, if you make a sound, if you
09:48try to talk, if you make a sound, and I get pulled over, I'm going to kill the cop, and
09:52then I'm going to kill you.
09:59I think we need your help, and you need ours.
10:07He's like he's in a trance.
10:09He's just sitting there, and this goes on for hours.
10:14They're sitting there asking him questions, and he's not responding in any way.
10:43Joe tries all the strategies.
10:49Phone call in front of him.
10:51Sarah was wanting to find out what happened to her mother and brother, but he's just not, not having it.
10:57Praying with him.
10:59Sometimes in this world, in spite of whatever wrong we may have done,
11:08you have the opportunity to do something right for someone that we care about.
11:16Staying silent, trying to use Matthew's own technique back against him.
11:25All of it to no avail.
11:27Just give me a clue.
11:28I mean, save me the time.
11:34Say, okay, I'll tell you this, or I'm not going to say anything, so don't bother hanging around.
11:39We have to assume that we've got to find these people ourselves.
11:52We got Hoffman's ex-girlfriend's information.
11:57We felt that she may be able to assist us in terms of locations, places that she and Matthew had
12:05gone while they were dating that may lead us to the victims.
12:13Matthew was crazy about trees, and he loved the woods.
12:23Matthew was crazy about trees, and he loved the woods.
12:41She and I drove all around the county to all of the places that she could recall Matthew taking her
12:48and hanging out in these trees.
12:52With very little to go on, we're kind of looking for a needle in a haystack.
13:04Going out the door now.
13:08We're very frustrated now because we're not getting any information from Matthew at all that will help us locate these
13:15individuals.
13:16We don't know if they're alive or dead.
13:34Eventually, the car stops.
13:36Takes me out of the trunk.
13:38Puts me over his shoulder with all the blankets on top of me.
13:41I hear a door open.
13:44Like a house door.
13:47And then, uh, sits me down.
13:51And then tells me not to move.
13:55I was a super shy, quiet girl.
13:58So, I didn't really talk very much.
14:00I'm super scared.
14:01I'm shivered up.
14:02I don't know what to do.
14:04I don't know what's going on.
14:05The only thought I have is, this guy's gonna kill me.
14:13One of the detectives tells us that he noticed that when Hoffman came in to be processed, fingerprinted and photographed,
14:22uh, and a DNA swab taken, that there was a female deputy that he talked to.
14:28And actually opened up a little bit, too.
14:31And when I hear this, and it occurred to me that, well, maybe what we need to do is just
14:38to have a female, uh, come in and try to interview him and see if maybe he opens up to
14:44her.
14:57I get the call from Harry that they want me to try to talk to him and interview him.
15:02Um, I immediately know the stakes are very high, and this is going to have an impact on many people's
15:09lives for good or bad, um, depending on what we get out of this.
15:14So, it was very serious, and I knew that right away.
15:19We're trying to figure out how can we get him to talk.
15:22How can we, this is a very unique situation.
15:25I don't think I've ever come across a case where someone's gone without speaking at all, and almost just not
15:31even present at all.
15:34Hi, Matt.
15:35Hi, my name's Chris.
15:36I wanted to talk to you for a second if I could.
15:39I'm just gonna close the door.
15:42How you doing?
15:42We decided to put my hair up in a ponytail, and I went in with a softer voice.
15:48I was never cutesy and young.
15:51I was just trying to, you know, he selected Sarah, a 13-year-old, you know, blonde girl that was
15:57wearing ponytail in her pictures.
15:59So, it was just a thought to say, if we want to make him feel more comfortable, let's do that.
16:03Do you go by Matt or Matthew, or you want me to call you something else?
16:07I don't want to call you the wrong name.
16:09Doesn't matter.
16:11What do your friends usually call you?
16:16Do they call you Matt?
16:18Okay, that's okay.
16:19All right.
16:20Like I said, you can call me Chris.
16:23I'd like to help you, Matt, and find out how you're feeling and what's going on.
16:28I know everybody in the community is aware of what's going on in the moment.
16:32I know the entire police department is outside this door waiting to hear those famous words of location and where
16:41they are.
16:47I know you don't know me, but sometimes it's a, that can be a good thing.
16:53I guess sometimes it's easier to talk to someone you don't know.
17:09As soon as we get into the house, takes the blankets off me, unblindfolds me, but I'm still gagged.
17:17And then he tells me to go, and I'm not sure where he wants me to go, so he starts
17:22kicking me around.
17:24And so I'm army crawling, you know, wherever he wants me to go because I'm still tied.
17:29My hands are still tied behind my back and my legs are still tied, so I can't walk.
17:34So we go into this bathroom, and all I see is just leaves and bags, like plastic bags.
17:42All around the bathroom.
17:46He picks me up and puts me on the toilet seat on my butt, so I'm facing towards the door.
17:52And so he gets down on his knees, and he's right in my face, and he's like, are you hungry?
17:57Are you hungry?
17:58Are you hungry?
17:59Because too bad, you're not eating.
18:02He just kept torturing me and torturing me and torturing me.
18:05He said, if you try to escape, I'm going to kill you.
18:09He now leaves the bathroom, he shuts the door, and it's super dark.
18:13It's pure dark in there.
18:15I'm looking around, and I see a window above the toilet, and there was no way for me to get
18:20up there to get out.
18:23I'm gagged.
18:24My hands are behind my back tied.
18:26My legs are still tied.
18:29He busted through the door and said, come on, follow me.
18:32He picks me up.
18:33He tells me to follow him.
18:35He opens up a door.
18:36I have no idea what the door is to.
18:39There was like a chess, like a wood chess.
18:43He moved that out of the way, told me to stand there and not move.
18:46He opened up the door.
18:49I see it's a basement.
18:53He pushes me, so I fall down at all the steps.
18:59And now I'm at the bottom of the step.
19:09I appreciate that you were not in your head before.
19:12I just want to make sure you're still with me.
19:17I've been talking to him for about 30 minutes, one-sided, just me talking.
19:25And then he, all of a sudden, puts his head up and starts speaking to me.
19:42It is a relief when he finally says something.
19:47I'm afraid you would know what it was I did.
19:50I want to reconnect with him and get him to start talking again.
19:56So I'm leaning over and I touch his knee to try to make a connection.
20:01And he reacted and sat straighter up and then started speaking again.
20:08I don't know where there's other people are.
20:11What other people?
20:13Who is those guys grilled me about yesterday?
20:29He says, here's your bed.
20:30I wanted to make it comfy.
20:32And when I'm looking around, it's just a bed of leaves.
20:37Like, it just leaves.
20:38And then the comforters I slept with every night at Mom's is laying on top of the leaves.
20:46I was super scared.
20:47And I said, why are the blankets that I slept with every night at Mom's?
20:52You know, every night I went to bed, those were the blankets I slept with, are laying on top of
20:57these leaves.
21:01Leaves?
21:02Why the heck would he put leaves in his basement and force Sarah to sleep on those leaves?
21:10What kind of monster is this?
21:14He is a weirdo.
21:15I mean, he really was a weirdo.
21:17Like, he sat in the trees.
21:18If you look back here in the tree, there's a hammock where he would sit and watch people.
21:22He's just different.
21:28I'm afraid that what they're saying is true and that I'm some sort of a monster.
21:36I don't think you're a monster at all.
21:40With her rescue, we still want to remain optimistic that Tina, Stephanie, and Cody are alive, maybe being held against
21:47their will at some location.
21:50I'm sure she still has some other fears of not knowing what her mom and her brother are.
21:57And that may be something that you can appease as well.
22:02Give her some peace.
22:04I don't know how I could help her anymore now.
22:07That's what I mean.
22:08I don't know how.
22:09He is saying that he can't remember anything that's happening.
22:13He can't imagine that he had done anything like this before.
22:20Stay with me.
22:23Talk about something else.
22:25I just don't want you to go in your head.
22:29But if they're out there somewhere and can be helped, you're the key to that.
22:35So even if it's us kind of going through the timeline, maybe a stereo memory.
22:41He's talking to me.
22:42He's communicating and connecting.
22:45I appreciate you talking to me this long.
22:49Thank you, too.
22:50And you're kind of on the edge of your seat trying to just hold on to the fact that the
22:55next thing he's going to say is where they are.
23:02If there's anything at all you think you can talk about, I can help you and help us, help Sarah
23:10and her family.
23:12Sitting there, I'm thinking, are they still alive?
23:15Can you tell me if they're still alive?
23:17Just let me know that.
23:18All we know for sure is that the clock is ticking and we are running out of time.
23:43I asked where my mom and brother was.
23:45And I said, so how are we going to get to school?
23:48He got very angry and he's like, if you bring it up again, I'm going to kill you.
24:00I'm sitting and my arms are still tied behind my back.
24:05He pushes me down and so now I'm laying, laying down on the bed of leaves.
24:15And then duct tapes my legs together so there's no possible way for me to move.
24:25He said he kidnapped me for ransom, that if I tried to escape, something about his buddies are going to
24:33come get me and he's going to get away.
24:38I had no idea what ransom was.
24:41He had said that my parents had to pay him for kidnapping me.
24:47And so I was confused.
24:49I had no idea.
24:50You know, I was just a little girl.
24:52I had no idea.
24:53I was just scared.
24:55He didn't make me believe I was going home.
25:02I want to help you do that.
25:07Matthew Hoffman is playing a game and he's winning.
25:09He's keeping control of the entire situation.
25:32He walks back up the steps, don't know where he's going.
25:38And then he comes back downstairs and he has a bowl of cereal with milk and said that's what I
25:46had to eat.
25:47And then I smelled the milk and it smelled spoiled so I didn't eat anything.
25:53He said if you're still hungry, you have to eat a dead squirrel.
26:00So he had the squirrel in his hand and so I was scared.
26:05I'm like, oh my gosh, what's he going to do?
26:06Forced me to eat it?
26:07So I didn't eat anything.
26:19This coffee's kind of good.
26:21Can we go to the bathroom?
26:22Yeah.
26:23Right?
26:24No.
26:24You're not going to try and overpower me to take my gun or anything, right?
26:27No, you might.
26:28If you want to, you can go to someone.
26:29Okay.
26:30I'm talking.
26:31I only use the bathroom.
26:33I'm talking.
26:34Gary?
26:36Joe takes him to the restroom.
26:43In the moment, there's definite excitement and holding your breath.
26:50Is he really going to say something to Agent Eats?
26:53Is he not?
26:54Is this part of the game?
26:57Ultimately, he has a conversation with Joe and tells Joe that he's dreaming.
27:04And he's seeing these horrendous images in his dreams.
27:09He says, I had this dream of what had happened.
27:15I will tell you where the bodies are.
27:27But only if you agree to kill me while we're out there.
27:32Well, that's not going to happen.
27:37It's a very sad moment.
27:52This is probably going to be a recovery and not a rescue.
27:58It just weighs heavy how important it is to find the bodies for closure for the families.
28:15There was no window.
28:17It was pure dark.
28:19100% dark.
28:21I'm laying there on the bed of leaves and he, you know, pulls my pants down.
28:28I'm still tied.
28:30And then he sexually assaults me with the knife laying on my chest.
28:37I just had my head turned the entire time.
28:44And then after that, he took the knife off me and then, you know, put my pants back up.
28:53I just now, it hurt.
28:54I just had the thought of it hurting.
28:57You know, I just, there's a knife laying on top of me.
29:01Keeps telling me he's going to kill me.
29:03So is he going to kill me?
29:06And then I was still laying there tied up.
29:09And then he had left, walked upstairs, and after that, I just had laid there.
29:21I'm thinking, oh my gosh, what if I, you know, what if he gets me pregnant?
29:25What if I get pregnant and I have to have a kid with this guy?
29:28You know, that, that is a thought I did have.
29:41We know that our searchers have looked pretty much everywhere that they can.
29:46And we're not going to be able to find these individuals without his help.
29:54This is your last chance right now to talk to us.
29:58We're in the moment of knowing that we only have so much time left.
30:03So, I mean, this is realistically our last opportunity.
30:06We've got to thank you for your family.
30:08And the lack of the media pressure also takes away the other people that are, you know, being affected by
30:13it.
30:14Sorry about that.
30:15Okay.
30:16We're done.
30:18We apparently are told we are done.
30:21Disappointment, because I didn't get the answer that I wanted.
30:24You didn't get the people back.
30:26So, you just kind of sit back and breathe that in.
30:33And you have to kind of live with it in the moment.
30:40He enjoyed playing with us.
30:43And he enjoyed having us basically beg for information and him be able to say inside, I'm not giving it.
30:54But he's got the death penalty hanging over his head.
30:58The prosecutor approaches Hoffman's attorneys and says, you know, let's talk about maybe making some kind of a deal here.
31:08We're willing to drop the death penalty in exchange for Matthew giving us a statement about what happened.
31:16And at that point, Hoffman's okay with dropping the death penalty.
31:24So, the understanding is he has to give us a written statement about what happened.
31:31And he also has to draw a map of where we'll be able to find the remaining three people.
31:41He says, you know, you've got to go out to Cococusing State Park.
31:46There's a tree there that I'm very familiar with.
31:50And he puts it on the little map that he draws.
32:03About 2 o'clock in the afternoon, I get in the car with the sheriff.
32:08And we have the other investigators following behind us.
32:11And the sheriff and I follow the attorney that's got the map.
32:15We drive out to Cococusing State Park.
32:18We get out of the sheriff's car.
32:19We walk up to the attorney and he goes, I think that's the tree he's talking about.
32:28And we're looking.
32:29And sure enough, it's about 60 foot tall.
32:32It's a beech tree.
32:34And about 30 feet up, you can see that there's a hollowed out point in the tree.
32:40And we're going, son of a bitch.
32:43This might be truthful.
32:46So, now we're at the base of the tree.
32:51And I'm watching as one of the crime scene guys, he's cutting a square into the tree.
32:59And he has this pole with a mirror on it and attached to the end of it.
33:05And he sticks the pole in.
33:07And at first, he's looking up the tree and he doesn't see anything.
33:11And then he adjusts the mirror, the pole, and he's looking down.
33:15He goes, I see garbage bags.
33:26We're like, you've got to be kidding me.
33:28He really did this.
33:29He really did this.
33:34We lay a tarp out on the ground and we're all gathered around as the two crime scene guys are
33:42lifting the garbage bags out.
33:46All of us are thinking at this point that what is really in those bags?
33:51Are they really body parts?
34:06We gather around the tarp and the two crime scene detectives.
34:12We're watching as they pull one bag after another out.
34:16They pull seven garbage bags out.
34:18Now they're laying on the tarp and we're all gathered around kind of quiet and like shaking our heads and
34:26just in disbelief, I think.
34:30Nobody's really saying anything, but once we have all seven bags out, you know, there's a sadness there that we're
34:38all feeling that this is really family members, you know, are missing people.
34:45Awful, awful situation.
34:52I think all of us have seen some horrific things before, but I mean, this is still shocking to see
34:59this.
35:00I think it was just awful what had happened to these nice people.
35:07What kind of an animal would do this?
35:25Today, this investigation took a major turn.
35:29Sheriff Barber gets up and he and his own calm way, you know, saying that, you know, today we were
35:38able to locate the bodies and unfortunately they're deceased.
35:44We have discovered and recovered the remains of Cody Maynard, Stephanie Sprang and Tina Herman.
35:58And I don't think there was many of a dry eye at the press conference.
36:03I felt for Sheriff Barber because I could tell during his press conferences, he was also getting emotional, you know,
36:16about it as well.
36:16We're inspired by Sarah.
36:19We're inspired by Sarah's bravery.
36:24I asked Larry Maynard to convey to Sarah to tell her that she was my hero.
36:35Sarah Maynard, I just broke down, I started crying.
36:38I'm glad and thankful I didn't have to see that.
36:42They'll never be forgotten and I will always love them tremendously, you know, what I would do to be able
36:47to say that I loved them one last time.
36:53As a journalist, you're taught never to show emotion.
37:00However, in this case, when the sheriff says three bodies of Tina, Cody, and Stephanie were stuffed in a tree
37:10in a garbage bag, I am pissed.
37:15I'm angry.
37:18And I'm heartbroken just because that's not any way a person should die, let alone three people.
37:29I'm walking down the hallway and I can hear Sheriff Barber sobbing inside his office.
37:39And I give it a little bit of time and I knock on the door and I go in and
37:46I say, I love you, brother.
37:47And I said, good job.
37:50I said, do you need anything?
37:52And he said, no, I'm all right.
38:04After this case, I got a phone call from somebody who told me that Sheriff Barber had committed suicide in
38:14his home.
38:15And that was a shocker because Dave, to me, was, you know, not only a friend, but, you know, he's
38:22kind of happy-go-lucky guy and just so nice to be around.
38:27And to know that he ended his life just was shocking.
38:33Sheriff Barber took his own life.
38:38And we don't know why that happened, but I can't help but imagine that some of what we went through
38:47that week probably took a toll on him.
38:56Matthew got the plea deal he made, which was, in cooperation of, given the location of the bodies, the death
39:02penalty be taken off.
39:04So he didn't get the death penalty.
39:08So he just got life in prison, which makes me happy because I feel like he, that piece of shit,
39:15needs to suffer.
39:19I think that he needs to rot in hell for the rest of his life.
39:45My daughter is a high school history teacher at East Knox local high school.
39:52Cody would have graduated in May of 2018.
39:58So East Knox holds their graduation ceremony on their football field outside.
40:04And my daughter was there that day.
40:07And as she is walking across the field, they're preparing for graduation.
40:14There's a chair at the front of the seating area for students with a purple cap and gown.
40:27Sorry.
40:33There's a cap and gown draped across a chair with Cody's diploma in a white rose.
40:46And it, um, totally blew me away.
40:52Um, it hit me like a ton of bricks because I'm, you know, years removed from this, this thing.
40:57And, uh, wow, I just, uh, um, it was just surreal.
41:13It was a reminder that we all did a good thing, uh, here in Knox County.
41:22And, um, the, the, the bright spot of all of this is that there's a young lady who, um, who
41:30survived.
41:33Just proud to be able to say that I had a small part in, uh, in doing that.
41:43If Cody was alive today, I think that me and him would have a serious bond.
41:52And the innocent little boy that he was then, you know, saying that he wanted to be in the Coast
41:57Guard, I think today that he would be saving people's lives.
42:00I think that he would be super successful.
42:04He's a straight A student, so I think he would even be in college or graduated college.
42:13This is a case that you never let go of and always think about.
42:19I have no doubt that if we would not have found Sarah, she would not have made it through this
42:26situation.
42:28I believe that first he would have kept Sarah for as long as it was pleasurable to him to keep
42:35her.
42:35And this would not have been the last time, um, that he did this because he got a taste of
42:41it and realized he could get away with it.
42:43And he would have continued doing these things again, one way or the other.
42:50Hoffman is in prison for the rest of his life in, in Toledo, Ohio.
42:56And, uh, I looked up his, um, anticipated date of release.
43:00It was 01018888.
43:09I think the way that I grieve from my mom and brother being gone is
43:16that I realized that mom, Cody, wouldn't want me to sit here and suffer every day of my life.
43:23But knowing that I am the only survivor of it and it hurts, you know, knowing that I couldn't be
43:29the save of the day.
43:30And, you know, I, there's nothing that I could have done.
43:33So I can't feel guilt.
43:37But my mom would not want me to take the easy way out either.
43:41She wouldn't want that for me, knowing that my children need me.
43:44I'm, you know, my kids is what saved my life from not taking the easy way out.
43:50So it makes Sarah Maynard the strong-willed woman that she is today to be able to say that she
43:58is a soul survivor
43:58because I believe not very many people could go through such a thing
44:04and still be standing here as strong as I am today.
44:11I just try to live day by day and just simple goals, simple goals just to raise my kids every
44:17day
44:17and just for them to be happy, then I'll be happy.
44:37It goes on behind the scenes of the investigation, murder scene, the incident room, tomorrow at 8.
44:42More true crime next.
