Prolonged heavy rainfall hitting inland regions and extending towards Victoria.
Transcript
00:00Prolonged heavy rainfall continues across inland parts of Australia and
00:04today on Tuesday we could see heavy rain extending down in towards Victoria. So
00:08let's start in Victoria and we still have a severe weather warning for heavy
00:12rainfall that extends from Bendigo in the north down towards Melbourne and
00:17eastwards to the rangers and Wilson's Promontory. Through this area we could see
00:21six hourly rainfall totals between 30 to 60 millimetres and those are more
00:25likely to as we head into the afternoon and also the evening period. Those heavy
00:29rainfall totals could produce localised flash flooding but while most areas
00:33should see some rain those high totals will depend on where we see thunderstorms
00:37developing particularly if you do get more than one thunderstorm moving over
00:41the same location. And we also do have a number of flood watchers across central
00:44and eastern parts of Victoria that's for the possibility of seeing flash flooding
00:48causing rivers and creeks to rise including some of the catchments around
00:51the Melbourne area. Rainfall will gradually ease as you head late into Tuesday night
00:56and also Wednesday morning. So let's have a look at some simulated computer model
01:00guidance now and this is just one forecast scenario but we can see we do have a
01:04trough lying over Victoria that's dragging a lot of tropical moisture down from
01:08the north of the country. As we head through the afternoon we can see these
01:12streaks of showers and thunderstorms moving in from the northwest and we
01:15could see some pockets of heavy rain across Melbourne and that warding area as
01:19we head into Tuesday afternoon. And then heading into late afternoon and
01:23evening we may see a bit of a break in the rain but then more heavy showers and
01:27storms coming down from the north as we head into Tuesday night and really
01:31only clearing up from the west as we head later in the evening and into
01:34Wednesday morning. So if you are across Melbourne and Victoria what can we
01:38expect? First we could see flash flooding and that could produce dangerous
01:42travel conditions which may coincide with the afternoon and evening commute and
01:46rivers and creeks may also start to rise depending where we do see those
01:49heavier showers and thunderstorms. For other areas this rain is very welcome
01:53particularly how dry it has been across Victoria so far this year. So now away
01:58for Victoria we still have that severe weather warning across central parts of
02:02Australia for parts of Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and New
02:06South Wales and through this area we have already seen daily rainfall totals well in
02:10excess of 100 millimetres. That is forecast to continue and that's because we are
02:15still expecting to see six hourly rainfall totals between 30 to 90 millimetres
02:19which could produce flash flooding within this warning area here. And because the
02:24weather system responsible is just so slow moving we are expecting this to be
02:27quite a prolonged rainfall event. For Northern Territory and Queensland rainfall
02:32may start to ease later on Wednesday into Thursday but for South Australia and
02:36New South Wales heavy rain is forecast to continue well into the weekend even
02:40pushing a little bit further south into South Australia from Friday. And so let's have a
02:45day-by-day look at what we are expecting. For Tuesday we can see showers and storms
02:48right across Victoria and extending up into this low-pressure system over the
02:51Northern Territory. Very heavy rainfall with tropical moisture wrapping into that
02:56system. As you head into Wednesday we do see showers and storms pushing into
03:00the southern parts of New South Wales but heavy rainfall really continuing and
03:03that low is just really not moving. It's almost stationary, continues to drag down
03:07very heavy rainfall particularly along its eastern and southern flanks. As you head
03:12into Thursday we could see some breaks in the rain across the Northern Territory and
03:15Queens of it really continuing to build across parts of South Australia and
03:19northwestern pockets of New South Wales. And then as you head into Friday we
03:22could see rain dipping down into central parts of South Australia including Adelaide.
03:27We may see another burst of showers and thunderstorms across the southeast of the
03:31country and we are expecting that low to continue to be quite slow moving so
03:34heavy rain continuing right across central Australia into the weekend and even
03:38early next week. And there are a number of flood watches still current right across
03:41the area as well as flood warnings and that is quite dynamic so do make sure
03:45the latest information before you head out. So heavy rainfall continuing across
03:49Victoria today and central Australia in towards the weekend we could see
03:53prolonged impacts for many areas. Do make sure you stay up to date with the
03:57latest information and warnings and get those on our website and app, follow us on
04:01social media and as always please stay safe.
