Get over there!
00:13:08What are you doing?
00:13:11Boy, you gotta bite down
00:13:13on the mouthpiece.
00:13:14That one's under here.
00:13:16You cannot spit it out two times in 30 seconds.
00:13:20Clench your jaw
00:13:21and let your fist fly.
00:13:26And that 10-second reprieve
00:13:29feels like an eternity.
00:13:30Same left hook.
00:13:32Maureen's gonna get hit
00:13:33with that same left hand
00:13:34if he doesn't keep that right hand up.
00:13:37It's down by his hip. Every time he jabs,
00:13:39he brings it right back to his waist.
00:13:41Albright's taking advantage of that.
00:13:47Boy, Albright needed this 10th round
00:13:49and boy is he getting it.
00:13:50He'd love to be able to drop Martin
00:13:52in the process with 30 seconds to do it.
00:13:55I got you. I got you. Hold on to the mouthpiece.
00:13:57Hold on to it.
00:14:04Good left for Albright.
00:14:06Martin might just want to try and kill some clock here.
00:14:09As he lands a nice little shot.
00:14:1210 seconds! Stop! Stop!
00:14:14Bell's coming.
00:14:20Nair Albright and Frank Martin go toe to toe for 10.
00:14:26That might be a draw, guys.
00:14:28That was a really, really fun fight.
00:14:30And what I think it's gonna come down to
00:14:31is how did the judges interpret
00:14:34the first four rounds of this fight.
00:14:36I thought after the first four rounds,
00:14:39it was relatively easy to score.
00:14:41Fifth and sixth for Frank Martin.
00:14:44Seventh and eighth for Tahir Albright.
00:14:45But Martin came back, surged in the ninth
00:14:48and a clear win in the tenth for Tahir Albright.
00:14:51This is going to be some very interesting scorecards.
00:14:55I have a 5-5 even.
00:14:57I mean, I think Martin...
00:14:59Early, I think Albright was having success.
00:15:01Martin found some success in the middle
00:15:03in the later rounds.
00:15:04But Albright closed the show.
00:15:06It's gonna be a tough decision.
00:15:10Kudos, though, to Nair Albright,
00:15:13who had to have that tenth round
00:15:15and certainly got it.
00:15:17And, boy, he'll wish that mouthpiece
00:15:20was a little more stuck in there
00:15:22because he might have just hurt his own chances.
00:15:25Listen, man, Martin kept keeping that chin up.
00:15:28Every time he punched, he didn't dip back down.
00:15:30He made himself a target for Albright's sweeping left hook.
00:15:34And you can see right there,
00:15:35those shots are the ones that are easy to see
00:15:36in a close round.
00:15:38One punch like that
00:15:39could sway the entire round for the judges.
00:15:42And you see Martin trying to hold on,
00:15:44trying to clinch.
00:15:45That's a bad look in a close fight.
00:15:49Clean punches.
00:15:50Every shot being landed there
00:15:52by Nair Albright.
00:15:55What guts, what a performance.
00:15:59According to the Fan Zone,
00:16:0158% of you think Frank Martin got it done.
00:16:0542% for Nair Albright.
00:16:10That's a fight I wouldn't mind seeing again.
00:16:12I don't know if they would fight each other again,
00:16:14but I wouldn't mind seeing it again.
00:16:15Well, listen, at least they packed up their talk.
00:16:17You know, this promotion was based on these guys talking
00:16:19and they packed it up.
00:16:21Let's go.
00:16:21Let's go, Nair.
00:16:22Let's go.
00:16:24Well, the Derek Chisora farewell tour will reach its final stop
00:16:28at London's O2 Arena, April 4th,
00:16:30as he fights for the 50th and supposed last time
00:16:33against the former heavyweight world champion,
00:16:35Deontay Wilder, live and exclusive on Desiree.
00:16:51All right, Thomas Triber has the scores.
00:16:58Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 rounds of boxing,
00:17:03we go to the judges' scorecards and all three judges,
00:17:09Tim Cheatham, Max DeLuca and John McCarthy are in agreement.
00:17:15They scored the same 95 to 95.
00:17:21This bout is a unanimous draw.
00:17:27There you go.
00:17:28That's how I had it 5-5.
00:17:29I mean, this was a nip-and-tuck type fight.
00:17:32Ebb and flow, both of them had their moments.
00:17:34Both of them got rocked,
00:17:35but I think that final round that Albright had success in,
00:17:39that was a difference there.
00:17:40Marn let this fight go.
00:17:41Now here, Albright took victory from defeat.
00:17:46Well, so many times it comes down to that last round,
00:17:49and if Martin had won it, he'd have won the fight.
00:17:51But it was Nair Albright who stepped up,
00:17:54and man, if he could have gotten a knockdown,
00:17:56if that mouthpiece had stayed in, got the knockdown,
00:17:59he would have won the fight.
00:18:00But oh, what could have been.
00:18:02Either way, a great scrap,
00:18:04and both guys come out unblemished, I guess you could say.
00:18:09But man, that was a lot of fun,
00:18:11especially the last couple rounds.
00:18:14Chris Mannix is in the ring.
00:18:15Who are you going to talk to first?
00:18:17Let's hear from both of them.
00:18:18Thank you, Todd.
00:18:19Frank, 95-95 felt pretty fair.
00:18:22Sitting scorecard, I'm sitting on the ring side.
00:18:25Did you think you did enough to win the fight?
00:18:27Oh man, I could have done a lot better.
00:18:29You know, I feel like there's some things that I seen in there
00:18:32when I was in the ring that I was capitalized off of.
00:18:35But he actually an awkward, like, good fighter.
00:18:38You know, he's strong.
00:18:39He got, like, his movement is a little difficult.
00:18:41So I see why, you know what I'm saying,
00:18:43he didn't get guys problems in there in the ring with his awkwardness.
00:18:47And, you know, he got some pop on his punches too.
00:18:50So I give him his credit for going out and showing me, you know,
00:18:53what I didn't think he was going to bring.
00:18:55He brought a better side to him than I thought.
00:18:57You gave him credit during the fight week for being a tough guy.
00:18:59Did he bring a little bit more than that in the ring tonight?
00:19:02You know, I knew he was going to be tough.
00:19:04You know, I seen things that I knew I could have capitalized off of.
00:19:08But, you know, he threw a little different stuff in the mix today.
00:19:12So, you know, we prepared for certain things.
00:19:15And it was some things that he threw tonight that I didn't expect.
00:19:19So, you know, it made the fight a lot more challenging
00:19:22than what I thought it would be.
00:19:23You surged back in that ninth round, had a great ninth round.
00:19:26And then the tenth round, you got clipped early on.
00:19:28How hurt were you in that moment?
00:19:29How did that change the rest of the fight?
00:19:32It was cool, you know.
00:19:33Once I got hit with the shot, I just grabbed, you know what I mean?
00:19:36Like, just grab, you know, try to turn him and just move around
00:19:39and catch him with shots while I was on the move.
00:19:41But he kept coming, you know.
00:19:43So, you know, he put up a good fight, you know.
00:19:45He had a tough opponent.
00:19:46I take my hat off to him.
00:19:48And if we could go at it again, you know,
00:19:50I'm willing to go at it again for a rematch.
00:19:52You know what I'm saying?
00:19:52All respect to you, Albright.
00:19:54That was a pretty good fight.
00:19:55Do you think it does deserve to be running back?
00:19:57Yeah, what do y'all think?
00:19:59Y'all think y'all want to run back?
00:20:03Yeah, yeah.
00:20:05I appreciate it, Frank.
00:20:06In here, you get the draw.
00:20:09Did you think you did enough to win the fight?
00:20:11Yeah, I thought I pulled it off.
00:20:13It was a great competitive fight.
00:20:15I expected a war, and I was prepared for a war.
00:20:19And that's what it was tonight.
00:20:21Fifth and sixth rounds looked like Frank started to get into a bit of a groove there.
00:20:24But then the seventh and eighth, you sort of changed the tide.
00:20:26What adjustments did you make in the second half of the fight?
00:20:29My coach told me if I don't pick it up, then we came here for nothing.
00:20:33And I wasn't trying to come here for nothing.
00:20:35So I picked it up, and I thought about my daughter back home,
00:20:39and I just gave it my all.
00:20:41Walk me through the tenth round.
00:20:43You landed a big shot.
00:20:44Heard him early.
00:20:46You kind of had a collision there that landed on the floor,
00:20:48and then seemed to keep losing your mouth guard there the entirety of that round.
00:20:53Yeah, man.
00:20:54If my mouthpiece ain't fall out, y'all know what'll happen.
00:20:57But it was a great fight, and I think we should run it back.
00:21:02And I want to say, Gia, I love you.
00:21:06Daddy put on a show for us.
00:21:07And, hey, we're going to come back stronger.
00:21:11I appreciate the effort to hear.
00:21:13All right.
00:21:13So wait.
00:21:14I want to sing a song real quick.
00:21:15How do I say goodbye to what we had?
00:21:27The good time that made us let away the bed.
00:21:37Good fight and a performance, guys.
00:21:40I don't know, Sergio.
00:21:42He might have been a better singer tonight.
00:21:44That was spot on.
00:21:46Yeah, it is.
00:21:46I mean, a fighter and a singer.
00:21:49Great voice there by Nahir Albright.
00:21:51Just a talented, talented person.
00:21:53And, of course, he's going to go with boys to men from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
00:21:57Here's your total punch stats.
00:21:59By the way, Albright landed a fight-high 19 power punches in the last round that helped earn him that
00:22:06draw.
00:22:06But similar fight statistics.
00:22:09And, Sergio, I mean, who wouldn't want to see this fight again?
00:22:12No, it's a great style matchup.
00:22:13And the thing about Albright, he's going to give champions issues.
00:22:16He's going to give every talented fighter problems.
00:22:19He's a championship spoiler in Nahir Albright.
00:22:22And I'm glad that he got to prove himself again on a big stage.
00:22:27All right.
00:22:28Let's send it back upstairs to Ade, who I believe is also going to sing a song.
00:22:32No, no, no.
00:22:32No singing from me here.
00:22:34I'm surprised he can sing after going 10 rounds and 10 furious rounds as well.
00:22:38No one likes draws, but I think that's fair to say that was a fight that was probably a draw,
00:22:4495-95.
00:22:45You almost felt, Shakur, like, Frank had the early part of the fight.
00:22:48Then Nahir came back into it in the second part of the fight.
00:22:51And in the end, if it went maybe championship rounds, Nahir might have got Frank out of there.
00:22:56Yeah, I thought it was a tremendous fight on both parts.
00:22:59I thought Frank Martin looked good early, like you said, and Nahir took over late.
00:23:03Honestly, Frank was looking like a frontrunner to me.
00:23:05He, like, he started off good, but, like, as the fight go on, it's like he died down.
00:23:09So, great performance from both guys.
00:23:12I would love to see the fight again.
00:23:13One thing Nahir said at the end there to Chris, and I agree with him.
00:23:17If it wasn't for the gum shield coming out, because there was a couple of times when he was really
00:23:20on top of Frank,
00:23:22the gum shield came out, and the referee obviously had to break it up.
00:23:24It looked like he was close to getting a knockdown, which would have won him the fight.
00:23:28Yeah, I mean, you're used to seeing the guy that's in trouble spitting his mouthpiece out to buy some time.
00:23:33In this case, Nahir Albright hurt himself, but I give him a lot of props.
00:23:37He closed so strong, it's pulled out draw.
00:23:39And if ever a fight begs for a rematch, it's this one, right?
00:23:42Yeah, we'd love to see this again.
00:23:43You know, one thing Nahir said at the press conference was like,
00:23:46look, I'm gonna stand in the middle of the ring and trade with you.
00:23:49And Frank was like, you're not gonna do that.
00:23:51He stuck to his word.
00:23:52He stood in the middle of the ring, and he traded Shakur, and he's got respectable power, Nahir.
00:23:57Oh yeah, Nahir is a great fighter. I've sparred him before.
00:23:59He's definitely a great fighter. He got awkward power, like it's awkward.
00:24:05It's like, you don't really get ready for his time, and he got great speed too, so.
00:24:10He's got really long reach as well. He's got deceptively long reach.
00:24:13Yeah, long arms.
00:24:13Look at his arms, and it's very good.
00:24:16If you're Frank, are you gonna be disappointed with this?
00:24:18He was obviously ready to move to kind of championship contender status.
00:24:22This kind of puts him back a little bit, but let's run it back.
00:24:25I think maybe it's a minor setback.
00:24:27I mean, for me, look, this is show business. This is entertainment.
00:24:29And that was a really exciting fight.
00:24:31So to me, Frank Martin elevated his status.
00:24:33And like Shakur said, the hero Albright's underrated.
00:24:35So it's not Frank Martin's fault that everyone didn't realize how good Albright is.
00:24:39But is Frank Martin a 12-round fighter?
00:24:43Because that was only 10 rounds and he was tired.
00:24:45So at the elite level, you got to be ready for 12 rounds, and I don't know if he's a
00:24:4912-round fighter.
00:24:50Yeah, that's a fair point.
00:24:51Why is that?
00:24:52What is that?
00:24:53I mean, he looks like he does carry a lot of dense muscle.
00:24:56Is it that?
00:24:56Is it something else they need to work on in the gym?
00:24:58It's probably something in the gym.
00:25:00I don't know if he's coming in here in 100% tip-top shape.
00:25:04So he just does not look like a 12-round fighter to me.
00:25:07Okay.
00:25:0812 rounds coming up.
00:25:09That was 10.
00:25:09This is definitely gonna be 12.
00:25:11Gary Antoine Russell takes on Andy Herioka.
00:25:14Remember this one for the WBA Junior Lightweight title.
00:25:18You see, brother, Gary Russell next to him as well.
00:25:21This is gonna be a great fight.
00:25:22Antoine Russell versus Andy Herioka.
00:25:25World title fight.
00:25:26This one coming up next.
00:25:27Don't go anywhere.
00:25:35Man, I can't wait.
00:25:37You know, a couple days out.
00:25:39So, like I tell everybody else, be prepared, bring your popcorn.
00:25:43I take my hat off to him for sharing the same battlefield as me.
00:25:46I know he's gonna come to be victorious, as all opponents do, you know.
00:25:52But like Mike Tyson said, everybody got a game plan until they get punched in the face.
00:25:56I feel like the smart thing to do is to exploit people's flaws, you know.
00:26:02That's one of the best ways to become victorious.
00:26:04Man, I plan on taking them in deep waters, you know.
00:26:07Not trying to just steamroll them.
00:26:09Never let nobody dim your flame.
00:26:12You know, the sky's the limit.
00:26:13Believe in yourself.

00:30:11THANK YOU, COUNTY.
00:30:14LET'S GO.
00:30:15AMERICAN FOOTBALL.
00:30:16I WATCH AMERICAN FOOTBALL.
00:30:19DO YOU WATCH FOOTBALL?
00:30:19I WATCH AMERICAN FOOTBALL.
00:30:20I WATCH AMERICAN FOOTBALL.
00:30:21DO YOU WATCH A BIT OF SOCCER?
00:30:22I WATCH FOOTBALL.
00:30:26I'M A FOOTBALL FAN.
00:30:29LET'S THINK ABOUT WHAT WE'VE
00:30:30GOT COMING UP NEXT.
00:30:31Гарри Антон Руссел vs. Андей Хириоко.
00:30:34Have you sparred Gary before?
00:30:35I sparred a million rounds with Gary Russell.
00:30:38Yeah?
00:30:39That's probably one of the fighters that I sparred the most.
00:30:41But in this fight, I think it's an interesting fight.
00:30:44I think Andy wants to be on the outside.
00:30:47I think Gary wants to be on the inside.
00:30:49And I think that the inside fighter
00:30:52is going to have the better advantage once they get close.
00:30:56You know, I've always felt like
00:30:57Gary was maybe too small for 140 pounds.
00:31:00I've seen him weighing at 137, 137, 138.
00:31:03He finally weighed in at 140.
00:31:05So maybe he's now grown into the division.
00:31:08And he can be a force in this division as well.
00:31:09He is a world champion in the division.
00:31:11Let's give him his respect.
00:31:12Yeah, I think that he give everybody in the division a hard fight.
00:31:16I don't care who it is.
00:31:17If you're fighting against Gary Russell,
00:31:19you got to come in there on your A game.
00:31:20Yeah, and that's what Hirioka is going to be hoping to do.
00:31:23But it's going to be difficult, Mike.
00:31:24I mean, fill us in.
00:31:25This guy only got here a couple of days ago from Japan.
00:31:28I mean, that's a long way to come and be sort of acclimatized to everything over here.
00:31:34It's going to be difficult for Yirioka here.
00:31:36Yeah, no doubt, Ade.
00:31:37Andy Iroka, this fight was supposed to happen originally in November on the Jake Paul
00:31:40Gervonta Davis undercard.
00:31:42That event was canceled.
00:31:43And so was this fight with it.
00:31:44He's waited a long time for his shot.
00:31:46And it's about to be 1 p.m. in Tokyo.
00:31:49So not so bad, but as long as he was able to sleep a little bit, I hope he was.
00:31:53He should be good to go.
00:31:54I'm sure the adrenaline is pumping right now.
00:31:57Where do you think Gary is in the rankings?
00:32:01I mean, we showed the rankings a bit earlier.
00:32:02And I think the ring had him quite low.
00:32:04I think it was seven or eight.
00:32:06You're obviously number one.
00:32:07Do you look at him as someone that could be number two, number three in the rankings?
00:32:11Yeah, I think he should be number two or number three.
00:32:12I think that he's been in the division for a long time.
00:32:15He hold the belt.
00:32:17Down at number eight.
00:32:18Yeah, that's insane.
00:32:20I just don't understand it.
00:32:21But tonight will show how good he is.
00:32:24Yeah, let's see how good he is.
00:32:26Mike, this is your doing, Mike.
00:32:27Is this your doing?
00:32:28Not my doing.
00:32:29I agree with you.
00:32:30I think he should be higher.
00:32:31And I want to give Russell some props, you know.
00:32:33He had a lot of trouble in his one loss.
00:32:35That was against Alberto Pollo, who's a damn good boxer.
00:32:37And then he bounced back against another boxer and Jose Balanzuela and made it look easy last year.
00:32:42He certainly did.
00:32:43That one was a shout-out.
00:32:44That was a close fight, though.
00:32:46It was a close fight.
00:32:47It was a close fight.
00:32:47I'm saying the way he closed.
00:32:50Yeah, the judges' scorecards will make it seem like it wasn't close.
00:32:53It was, I agree.
00:32:54A close fight.
00:32:55All right, here we go.
00:32:55World title fight.
00:32:56Gary Antoine Russell versus Andy Hirioka.
00:32:59Let's go back down to Todd Grisham for telling the tape.
00:33:01Hey, shout-out to Shakur, who's doing a great job up there, speaking his mind,
00:33:05not riding the fence.
00:33:06I love it.
00:33:07As we turn to our tale of the tape for this, the co-main event of the evening.
00:33:12Gary Antoine Russell, he's the champ.
00:33:15Taking on Hirioka, who comes all the way from Yokohama, Japan.
00:33:20Look at the reach advantage.
00:33:22Five inches for Hirioka.
00:33:25Now let's go into the ring.
00:33:26And Mr. Co-main event himself, Thomas Driver.
00:33:32Live worldwide on DAZN from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:33:40Let's now welcome to the ring our co-main event participants.
00:33:47First, the challenger from Japan, Andy DeBlade Iroka.
00:34:08Andy DeBlade Iroka coming around the world from Japan for this big moment against Gary
00:34:14Antoine Russell.
00:34:15Southpaw versus Southpaw.
00:34:17Big puncher.
00:34:18A little bit more footwork coming out of Iroka.
00:34:20It's going to be a slugfest that I don't expect going
00:34:22to the distance.
00:34:24And the big question for Andy Iroka is what kind of physical condition is he in right now?
00:34:30This is a guy that just got to Las Vegas about 48 hours ago.
00:34:35Maybe closer to 72, but he has not been here stateside for very long.
00:34:40He had visa issues that kept him from getting into the country until the middle of the week.
00:34:44But he said to us this week, guys, I feel fine.
00:34:47I'm not feeling any jet lag.
00:34:49I got to tell you fellas, I don't believe him.
00:34:51There's no way that you can make a 12 hour flight from Japan and not feel something when
00:34:57you land and you start getting into this fight week.
00:35:00So I think Andy Iroka on paper certainly has what it takes to win a championship tonight
00:35:05to beat Gary Antoine Russell.
00:35:07He is excellent on that back foot and he is excellent with that straight left hand.
00:35:11But does he have the stamina?
00:35:13That's going to be the big question.
00:35:15Well, right now he's feeling a little Michael Jackson, a little dirty Diana as he makes his
00:35:19way to the ring.
00:35:21Andy Iroka as a dad from Ghana, his mother's from Japan, speaks fluent English, spent a lot
00:35:29of time in America during his teenage years and promises tonight not just to beat Antoine
00:35:36Russell, but to knock him out.
00:35:39And now let's welcome to the ring, the defending world champion from the United States, Gary Antoine
00:35:52Russell.
00:36:01Well, Russell's been in some big fights already, Chris, but he did not sidestep it and said,
00:36:07this is the biggest fight of my life.
00:36:08I have to win this one and I want to start unifying the division.
00:36:12Yeah, it's not boxing if we don't have a Russell as a world champion.
00:36:17For seven years, Gary Russell Jr. held a 126 pound title.
00:36:21Last year, Gary Antoine Russell began his reign and it has a chance of being a long one.
00:36:27This Russell is a former U.S. Olympian who is one of the most physical fighters in this
00:36:32weight class.
00:36:3218 wins, 17 of them coming by by knockout.
00:36:36He battered some ex-champions in Victor Postol and Rantz, but Thalemy Hurley in his career
00:36:41and he won his title with that wide decision win over Rayo Valenzuela.
00:36:46I asked Russell this week what his goals were at this stage of his career.
00:36:51He said, he said, I want to show everyone that I'm great.
00:36:58And he looks great against Jose Valenzuela.
00:37:00That's for sure.
00:37:01A big bounce back win for him after losing that tight split decision to Alberto Puello.
00:37:07He looked as good as gold and says he'll be even better tonight.
00:37:21Ladies and gentlemen, this bout is scheduled for 12 rounds and it'll be for the WBA.

00:38:5719 of his 24 wins come by way of knockout.
00:39:02Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the undefeated former WBO Asia-Pacific champion,

00:39:27And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner, he comes in the ring wearing blue and
00:39:33black,
00:39:34and weighed in at an even 140 pounds.
00:39:38Hailing from Capitol Heights, Maryland, USA, he was a 2016 U.S. Olympian, and now as a professional,
00:39:51has a record consisting of 18 wins, just one defeat, 17 of his 18 wins come by way of knockout.
00:40:01And now, ranked as the number eight junior welterweight in the world by Ring Magazine,
00:40:08and tonight, in his first world title defense, here is the reigning and defending WBA junior welterweight
00:40:20champion of the world, Gary Anton Russell!
00:40:32Gary!
00:40:32Gary!
00:40:33Gary!
00:40:33Gary!
00:40:41Gary!
00:40:44Gary!
00:40:44Gary!
00:40:45Gary!
00:40:46Gary!
00:40:47Gary!
00:40:47Gary!
00:40:47Gary!
00:40:48Gary!
00:40:48Gary!
00:40:48Gary!
00:40:50Gary!
00:41:01Хириока currently trains at the Ohashi Gym in Yokohama
00:41:05and promises to bring a world title back there
00:41:08to join his stablemate, Nayoa Inouye,
00:41:11who's obviously a world champion,
00:41:13but to do it, he's got to go through Gary Antoine Russell
00:41:15who promises not just to win,
00:41:17but to do it with violence and ferocity
00:41:20of what Хириока has never seen before.
00:41:23Here we go, 12 rounds for the WBA
00:41:26Super Lightweight Championship.
00:41:28You know, the styles are pretty apparent.
00:41:31Gary Antoine Russell, he wants to apply pressure.
00:41:34He wants to fight in fast spurts.
00:41:36Andy Hирioka, he wants to tie him.
00:41:38He likes to take that little step back
00:41:40and throw that left hand or that right hook.
00:41:43Sergio, earlier this week,
00:41:44you were all about Hирioka winning this fight by upset,
00:41:48but then you heard he had zero amateur fights
00:41:51and you flipped the script.
00:41:52I flipped the script because I've never heard
00:41:54of any kind of success coming from a fighter
00:41:57with zero amateur experience going up against an Olympian
00:42:00in Gary Russell.
00:42:02So that right there made me shift my opinion a little bit,
00:42:04but I still think it's going to be a slack fest
00:42:06between two powerful softballs.
00:42:08You know, the argument for Hирioka
00:42:09is how good he looked against Jin Sasaki.
00:42:12At that time, that was a huge fight over in Japan,
00:42:15and Jin Sasaki is another aggressive fighter,
00:42:18comes in looking for knockouts,
00:42:20and it was Hирioka that scored an 11th round knockout
00:42:23in that fight.
00:42:23Right now, Gary Antoine Russell is a much better fighter
00:42:26than Jin Sasaki, much more polished,
00:42:28but it showed in that fight
00:42:30that if you come forward too reckless,
00:42:33Andy Hирioka will catch you.
00:42:35Yeah, he says that, listen,
00:42:37Russell's really aggressive.
00:42:39I'll let him come to me,
00:42:40and I'll blast him out.
00:42:42And if this is a fight that Hирioka's going to fight,
00:42:44it's going to be very difficult for Russell
00:42:46to break that distance.
00:42:49Five inches shorter, less reach.
00:42:53The better combination puncher,
00:42:55but like we keep saying,
00:42:56Andy Hirioka steps back nicely,
00:42:58looking for that left hand.
00:42:59He then comes with a check right hook.
00:43:01Very dangerous.
00:43:04Let him go, let him go, let him go, let him go.
00:43:06Stop!
00:43:08Watch it hold.
00:43:11Hirioka warns for holding already.
00:43:13Minutes go here in round one.
00:43:17You can tell that Gary Antoine Russell
00:43:19respects the power of Hirioka,
00:43:21not coming inside as strongly
00:43:24as maybe I expected him to do early.
00:43:28Quite a good round here for Andy Hirioka.
00:43:30He's keeping Russell at bay.
00:43:32None of them really landed much,
00:43:33but this is what you want to do
00:43:37as you're Hirioka.
00:43:38Let him go, let him go, Andy.
00:43:39Oh, boy.
00:43:41Russell's swinging for the fences.
00:43:42You know, Russell landed a pretty good
00:43:44left hook there in that exchange.
00:43:46And as soon as he breaks that distance,
00:43:48Russell comes back with something explosive.
00:43:50Yeah, Russell only needs to have
00:43:52two or three of those moments in a round.
00:43:58He's going to have to show that power
00:43:59with patience is Russell.
00:44:04Discipline, patience,
00:44:05and just bide your time
00:44:07until Hirioka makes a mistake.
00:44:10Hirioka hasn't let that left hand go yet.
00:44:12Yeah, and that's probably
00:44:13what Russell's waiting for.
00:44:14Nice jab counter.
00:44:19Huh!
00:44:25Never
00:44:27was there a tale so fine
00:44:31as that of the bride
00:44:34and have Frankenstein.
00:44:36The Bride, rated R, March 6th.
00:44:39Up and down with your head move.
00:44:41Head move, Frank, Frank.
00:44:43You, it was only one exchange
00:44:44you were all in that round,
00:44:46but you won that motherfucker.
00:44:47You control and dictate the exchanges
00:44:49that you win.
00:44:50Do you understand?
00:44:50Huh.
00:44:52Stay set.
00:44:52Do not mention it take off.
00:44:54He's trying to look for it
00:44:55to that plan, too.
00:44:56You hear me?
00:44:58Hey, you don't got nothing to do
00:45:00but go in the ring.
00:45:02Now, listen.
00:45:04Just like that, bruh.
00:45:05Show your stick.
00:45:06You ain't throwing much punches
00:45:08that round, though.
00:45:09You gotta let your hands go
00:45:10a little more, okay?
00:45:11Okay.
00:45:14Good instructions there
00:45:15from Garrett Russell, Jr.
00:45:17And I love that it's a family affair
00:45:18in that Russell.
00:45:20The Russell men,
00:45:21trained by their father,
00:45:22who passed away
00:45:23several years ago.
00:45:24Gary Russell, Jr.
00:45:25taking over in the corner
00:45:26for Gary Antoine Russell.
00:45:28He's become a really sharp mind
00:45:29as a boxing trainer.
00:45:31And don't forget about
00:45:31Gary Antonio Russell,
00:45:32who's 21-1,
00:45:33a super bantamweight
00:45:34who last boxed in August.
00:45:36That was perfect instructions
00:45:38by the champion,
00:45:39Gary Russell, Jr.
00:45:40You know, not many exchanges,
00:45:41he said,
00:45:42but you won that round
00:45:43with that one combination
00:45:45you threw.
00:45:45And this is the type of fight
00:45:47it's gonna be
00:45:47where one short combination
00:45:49could change
00:45:49a quiet round
00:45:51or a round
00:45:51where not much punches
00:45:52are landed.
00:45:54Let it go, Andy.
00:45:55Hands quick, hands quick.
00:45:56I love how Russell,
00:45:57when he finally gets
00:45:59Herioka backed into the ropes,
00:46:00lets his hands go.
00:46:01You see a lot of fighters
00:46:02who do all the work
00:46:03to finally cut off the ring
00:46:04and they don't do anything with it.
00:46:08Yeah, that's how you
00:46:09steal rounds, you know.
00:46:10And when you're having
00:46:11difficulty closing that range,
00:46:13that distance,
00:46:13as soon as you get a chance
00:46:14to hit anything,
00:46:16a bicep or elbow or anything,
00:46:17just let your hands go.
00:46:19Now, Sergio,
00:46:19that is a wide stance
00:46:21that Andy Herioka
00:46:22fights out of.
00:46:23Yeah, I noticed that
00:46:24as well,
00:46:25but it works for him
00:46:26because, you know,
00:46:27some fighters
00:46:27can get away
00:46:28with a wide stance.
00:46:29You know,
00:46:30if they're that athletic
00:46:31and as we can see
00:46:32it doesn't take away
00:46:33from the power
00:46:34of Herioka
00:46:35with 19 knockouts
00:46:36and 24 fights.
00:46:36Yeah, landed that left hand
00:46:38there in that exchange.
00:46:45Herioka's just not doing
00:46:46much offensively, Sergio.
00:46:48He's just jabbing.
00:46:50He expected Russell
00:46:51to be unleashing
00:46:52that left hand
00:46:53a lot more,
00:46:53but I like the patience
00:46:54Russell's showing.
00:46:55He's not giving him
00:46:56that left hand
00:46:57because he doesn't want
00:46:58to fall off balance
00:46:59to get checked
00:47:00with anything
00:47:00by Herioka yet.
00:47:05Herioka was just
00:47:06four years old
00:47:07when he went to the gym
00:47:08for the first time,
00:47:08he said.
00:47:09Turned pro at 17
00:47:10but had no amateur bounce.
00:47:12In order to be
00:47:16successful against Herioka,
00:47:18you've got to be patient.
00:47:19You can't get over-eager
00:47:21with power
00:47:21because Herioka
00:47:22is a counter-puncher
00:47:23at heart.
00:47:26Heavy hands,
00:47:27but naturally
00:47:28he counters you.
00:47:31A big step up
00:47:32in class here
00:47:33for Herioka
00:47:33against Gary Antoine Russell.
00:47:35And if he falls behind
00:47:37in rounds
00:47:37in these quiet rounds,
00:47:39he's going to have
00:47:39to get out of character
00:47:40and come forward
00:47:41and be aggressive.
00:47:42I think that will fall
00:47:44into the hands
00:47:44of Gary Antoine Russell.
00:47:51Let him go.
00:47:52Let him go.
00:47:52Pass me.
00:47:53Pass me.
00:47:54Stopped.
00:48:00Both these fighters
00:48:01accustomed to seeing
00:48:02southpaws coming off
00:48:04southpaw victories
00:48:05in their last fight.
00:48:07So no feeling out
00:48:09process for the left-handers.
00:48:10Herioka's last fight
00:48:11was 536 days ago.
00:48:13A nine-round stoppage
00:48:14over Ishmael Barroso
00:48:16September 2024.
00:48:18Talk about ring-run.
00:48:27Andi, I'll let you know.
00:48:28I'm holding you, okay?
00:48:29All right?
00:48:41That's one way
00:48:41to get pumped up
00:48:42for the fight.
00:48:44The Aztec warrior
00:48:47has become known
00:48:49for this, Sergio.
00:48:50These very bright,
00:48:52colorful,
00:48:52and eccentric
00:48:53ring entrances.
00:48:54El Azteca,
00:48:55you know,
00:48:56with the rounded roots,
00:48:58Mexican roots,
00:48:59Mexican-American roots.
00:49:02Bernardo Barros used to do
00:49:03this a lot as well,
00:49:04you know,
00:49:04just the pride
00:49:06in their Mexican
00:49:07and Aztec blood.
00:49:20Our main event
00:49:22up next,
00:49:23Ryan Garcia
00:49:24and Mario Barrios.
00:49:27Right now,
00:49:29round three
00:49:30between Russell
00:49:31and Herioka.
00:49:33If you're just joining us,
00:49:35Herioka
00:49:35with visa issues
00:49:37was forced to fly
00:49:38into Las Vegas
00:49:39on Thursday night.
00:49:42Total travel time
00:49:43was 20 hours.
00:49:45But he says
00:49:46he's feeling fresh.
00:49:47No jet lag
00:49:48as Russell
00:49:49lands a couple
00:49:50of power shots.
00:49:51Yeah,
00:49:51and then Herioka
00:49:52trying to check him
00:49:53with a sharp left hook.
00:49:55This is,
00:49:55look,
00:49:56I thought this was
00:49:57going to be
00:49:57a competitive fight,
00:49:58a difficult fight.
00:49:59I mean,
00:50:00I even went as far
00:50:01as to say,
00:50:01Herioka might get the upset.
00:50:03And I could see it
00:50:04playing out that way.
00:50:05Both these fighters
00:50:05are respecting each other.
00:50:06Herioka's skills
00:50:08and power.
00:50:10Herioka's trying
00:50:10to hold on.
00:50:11Russell says,
00:50:12I don't think so.
00:50:13I love that
00:50:13for Gary Russell,
00:50:14punching like that
00:50:15on the inside.
00:50:16I like it the referee's
00:50:17letting it go, too.
00:50:18Herioka's trying
00:50:18to tie him up,
00:50:19but as long as
00:50:20Gary Russell's
00:50:20throwing his hands,
00:50:21the referee's
00:50:22going to let him
00:50:22keep punching.
00:50:23That's what Russell
00:50:24needs to do.
00:50:24He needs to throw
00:50:25any time he breaks
00:50:26that distance.
00:50:27Herioka's going to be
00:50:27the favorite on the outside.
00:50:29On the inside,
00:50:30Russell's quicker hands
00:50:31are going to be
00:50:32the factor.
00:50:37Sometimes you've got
00:50:37to make it ugly.
00:50:38You've got to make it rough.
00:50:39Find a way to win.
00:50:41That's what champions do.
00:50:44Chris, you had the first
00:50:45two rounds split.
00:50:46Yeah, I thought,
00:50:46well, look, the second round,
00:50:47there really wasn't much
00:50:48action there.
00:50:48I thought Herioka landed
00:50:49one pretty good left hand
00:50:51and was able to stay away
00:50:52from the power shots
00:50:53of Gary Russell.
00:50:54So a quiet round
00:50:55that I edged to Herioka.
00:50:5719-19 on my scorecard.
00:50:59For those of you
00:51:00participating in the fan zone,
00:51:02both rounds to Russell.
00:51:04I agree more with that,
00:51:05Sergio.
00:51:05What do you say?
00:51:06I hate to admit it again,
00:51:07but I agree with Maddox again.
00:51:09I think Herioka
00:51:10did pretty well
00:51:11in that second round,
00:51:12staying on the outside,
00:51:12making it difficult
00:51:13for Russell to get in
00:51:15and just flurry away
00:51:16at the midsection.
00:51:21This is going to be
00:51:22a type of fight
00:51:22where not a lot of clean shots
00:51:24are going to be landed.
00:51:26You're going to have to get
00:51:27what you can get
00:51:29if you're Russell
00:51:30and Herioka is,
00:51:31patience is going to be
00:51:32on his side.
00:51:34And that's why those flurries
00:51:35on the inside
00:51:37are really smart
00:51:38and really important
00:51:39for Gary Russell.
00:51:40In a low-output type of fight,
00:51:42if he can get on the inside,
00:51:43throw a bunch of scoring punches,
00:51:45that's going to make an impact
00:51:46on the judges.
00:51:47But with that said,
00:51:48you also can't get reckless
00:51:49with your defense.
00:51:50Russell,
00:51:50keeps his head
00:51:51in the same line of fire
00:51:52every time he comes in.
00:51:54And you can bet
00:51:55Herioka's going to try
00:51:56to check him
00:51:56with one of those right hooks.
00:52:01Some more head movement
00:52:03if you're Russell
00:52:03and, of course,
00:52:04jabbing your way in.
00:52:06But, Chris,
00:52:07we've seen it time and time again,
00:52:08especially the last few years.
00:52:10Judges put a premium
00:52:11on aggression,
00:52:13even if it's not
00:52:13that effective aggression.
00:52:14In a close round,
00:52:15whoever's pushing the pace
00:52:17and the tempo
00:52:17and trying to land punches
00:52:19generally gets the nod.
00:52:35Scratch, scratch.
00:52:37I love you too many times.
00:52:41I don't get lackadaisers.
00:52:42Stay off your motherfucking sweat
00:52:44with your head moving.
00:52:44Thank you.
00:52:45This is about three or four?
00:52:47Going to the fourth?
00:52:49Hey, I need you to start
00:52:51touching downstairs now.
00:52:54Stay tight.
00:52:57Start touching downstairs.
00:52:59Headhunting a little bit too much
00:53:00is Russell.
00:53:02There you see.
00:53:03That's what I like seeing
00:53:04from Russell right there.
00:53:05Anytime, you just got to dig away
00:53:06at anything
00:53:08because it's anytime you break
00:53:09that distance
00:53:10and that long reach
00:53:11by Herioka right there
00:53:13lending a left hand.
00:53:14But that's checked right hook
00:53:15that I want to see more
00:53:16from Russell
00:53:17and from Herioka.
00:53:24It's Capitol Heights, Maryland
00:53:26versus Yokohama, Japan
00:53:27in Las Vegas.
00:53:34You know, Gary Antoine Russell
00:53:36got some experience
00:53:37fighting an opponent like this
00:53:39when he took on Alberto Cuello
00:53:40a couple of years ago.
00:53:41And while they're not
00:53:42identical type of fighters,
00:53:43they're both tall, rangy southpaws
00:53:45that like to counterpunch.
00:53:47And Russell said he got a lot
00:53:48of information off of that fight.
00:53:51Specifically, he knows
00:53:52for 12 rounds
00:53:53he's got to keep his foot on the gas.
00:53:57Russell, a decorated amateur.
00:53:59In fact, he had four wins
00:54:00over Richardson Hitchens
00:54:02when they were amateurs
00:54:02including in the opening round
00:54:04of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
00:54:06Good jab landed by Herioka.
00:54:08Even Russell nodded his head
00:54:10giving him some credit right there.
00:54:12But Herioka needs to pop that jab.
00:54:15Double it up.
00:54:16Double it up if you're Herioka
00:54:17because every time
00:54:18he throws one shot
00:54:19he brings it right back
00:54:20and Russell's waiting to counter him
00:54:21with that left hand.
00:54:33That left score for Russell.
00:54:40Really good radar
00:54:42Herioka has.
00:54:43He doesn't have to pull back
00:54:44far enough to get out
00:54:46of the punch of countering
00:54:48but he still doesn't get hit
00:54:49with the short combinations
00:54:51that Russell's trying to land.
00:54:55Clever, sneaky, good fighter
00:54:58is Herioka.
00:55:02Maybe I'm seeing a different fight.
00:55:03I'm just not that impressed.
00:55:06Are you impressed
00:55:07with what Russell's doing?
00:55:08I think he's doing better
00:55:09than Herioka.
00:55:12I think he's pressing the tempo.
00:55:14He's landing more punches.
00:55:15He's being more offensive.
00:55:17He's dictating the pace.
00:55:18Okay, watch your head, okay?
00:55:20Watch your head too, okay?
00:55:21All right, all right.
00:55:22Time in.
00:55:23Watch.
00:55:26I mean, maybe he's doing better
00:55:27defensively than Russell is
00:55:29but I don't know.
00:55:30You're the expert, not me.
00:55:32Look, I just see Russell
00:55:33who I think is a natural
00:55:35better combination puncher
00:55:36being shut out.
00:55:39Not shut out
00:55:40but he's not letting
00:55:41his hands go
00:55:41because Herioka's not
00:55:42giving him the opportunity
00:55:43to let those hands go.
00:55:45Russell's an explosive
00:55:46combination puncher
00:55:48but we're not seeing it
00:55:49just yet
00:55:50and because of that
00:55:51I got to give credit
00:55:52to Andy Herioka.
00:56:00A left there from Russell
00:56:01but missed with the uppercut.
00:56:12And more success on the inside
00:56:14with left up from Herioka
00:56:18and now he's on the front foot.
00:56:19Yeah, two overhand left hands.
00:56:22He got the tension of Russell
00:56:23right there on the inside.
00:56:24Checked him over the temple.
00:56:31Hey, we got Thursday night
00:56:33fight action coming your way
00:56:34March 19th live from Puerto Rico
00:56:36as local prospects
00:56:38Felix Paria and Alfredo Cruz
00:56:40face off for the WBO Latino
00:56:42featherweight championship.
00:56:50There's a beautiful shot
00:56:52of Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:56:54We're at the T-Mobile arena
00:56:55there on the bottom left
00:56:56of your screen
00:56:57which has become
00:56:58quite the venue
00:57:00for boxing.
00:57:01Adele Oladipo said
00:57:02it's his favorite venue
00:57:03in the whole world
00:57:04better than MSG.
00:57:06It is a great place
00:57:07to see a fight
00:57:08no doubt about it.
00:57:26We talk about game plans
00:57:28with these two guys
00:57:29Gary Russell Jr.
00:57:30obviously wants to
00:57:31the inside
00:57:31throw some body shots
00:57:33Herioka threw four rounds
00:57:34zero body shots
00:57:53Let's look at some
00:57:54copy box numbers
00:57:56through four rounds
00:57:57jabs to the body
00:57:58for Russell
00:57:59seven of 19 thrown
00:58:01Herioka
00:58:01zero for zero
00:58:05Now Herioka clearly
00:58:07looking to go upstairs
00:58:08and looking to land
00:58:09that counterlift
00:58:10Let it go, let it go
00:58:12Hands free, hands free
00:58:13Hands free
00:58:13Get over there
00:58:15That's right
00:58:16by Russell
00:58:16Yeah, if a guy's
00:58:17trying to hold you
00:58:17like that
00:58:18punch him in the face
00:58:19punch with your free hand
00:58:20that's what Russell
00:58:21did right there
00:58:21and that's the type
00:58:22of fight he's gonna
00:58:23have to get going
00:58:25here against Herioka
00:58:28Make it rough
00:58:28get anything you want
00:58:30anything you can get
00:58:33And check your frustration
00:58:35at the door
00:58:35if you're Gary Russell
00:58:38This is gonna be
00:58:39a patient type fight
00:58:40and right now
00:58:41he's doing just that
00:58:43Chris, you have it even
00:58:44Yeah, 38-38
00:58:46on my scorecard
00:58:47I thought Herioka
00:58:47edged that last round
00:58:49as well
00:58:50just on that
00:58:50straight left hand
00:58:51he's landed some
00:58:51pretty good shots
00:58:52on Russell
00:58:53he's been able
00:58:53to keep Gary Russell
00:58:54from having the kind
00:58:55of success in spurts
00:58:57that he's used to having
00:58:59so dead even
00:58:5938-38
00:59:00on my scorecard
00:59:04The fan zone
00:59:06a little more
00:59:07to my liking
00:59:07Russell
00:59:08four rounds
00:59:09to none
00:59:0940-36
00:59:10You and the fans
00:59:11have been wrong today
00:59:22Good to see Herioka
00:59:24coming forward
00:59:24though
00:59:25more this round
00:59:27Total punches
00:59:28landed through
00:59:28four rounds
00:59:30Russell has landed
00:59:3117 more shots
00:59:33than Herioka
00:59:34I think you have to
00:59:35look at those numbers
00:59:36though
00:59:36and acknowledge
00:59:37the body attack
00:59:38gobbling up
00:59:39a lot of them
00:59:40Look, the body shots
00:59:41for Russell are real
00:59:42but he's had a couple
00:59:43sequences
00:59:43where he's just
00:59:44flurried downstairs
00:59:45not necessarily
00:59:46impactful
00:59:46but certainly
00:59:47scoring type shots
00:59:48Are you Mr. Flurry?
00:59:50You're known as
00:59:51the Flurry guy
00:59:52Hey, when it comes
00:59:53to getting a stoppage
00:59:54yes
00:59:54I'm in favor of Flurry's
00:59:58But I don't think
00:59:58either one of these guys
00:59:59is in a position
01:00:00to get a stoppage
01:00:00right now
