00:00How much of an impact do deepfake scams have?
00:07The internet is filled with promises.
00:10Schemes which say they'll get you rich quick.
00:12Dating apps which claim they'll find you a dream partner in a few clicks.
00:16And bargain offers for holidays at cut prices.
00:19But with all of this comes the possibility of being scammed.
00:22And as deepfakes become increasingly sophisticated,
00:25the sheer amount of money people are losing to online scams is piling up.
00:29Deepfake related scam and fraud schemes tricked people out of more than €900 million worldwide last year,
00:36according to a new study.
00:38That's three times more than the estimated €300 million worth of scams in 2024.
00:44More than 80% of these losses were made on social media.
00:47In most cases, deepfake scams impersonate famous people to promote fraudulent investments.
00:53And European politicians are not immune.
00:55We previously reported on a speech made by Polish President Karol Nawrowski,
01:00which was altered with the help of AI to make it seem like he was promoting a fraudulent investment platform.
01:06In another AI scam, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged people to sign up to an investment platform,
01:11which prompted consumer rights organizations to sound the alarm.
01:15Romance fraud is also on the rise.
01:17Scammers use realistic videos and audio to build fake romantic relationships with victims.
01:22In France, one woman's story went viral after she fell in love with a man who she believed was Brad
01:28Pitt.
01:29In reality, she was tricked by a sophisticated scam which relied on deepfake audios and videos,
01:34leading her to be conned out of more than €800,000.
01:37Romance scam losses are usually less significant than those made in investment scams,
01:42but highly targeted attacks have a serious psychological effect on victims.
