00:02We've had the first birth of 2009. It is a Zambezi lechwe, a threatened species out in the wild here
00:08at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.
00:10As in any of our species, we have quite a few that are threatened or endangered, and that just means
00:16that their numbers are dwindling out in the wild.
00:18So it's very important for us to keep reproducing them here and breeding them here at the Wild Animal Park
00:23so that they're around for future generations.
00:27We are set up in such a way with our large enclosures with multi-species exhibits that we are very
00:32successful at breeding and reproducing these animals.
00:37The lechwe is what's called tucked, and these animals, when they're born, the mothers will tuck them away under a
00:43rock, under a tree, somewhere where it will be much harder for a predator to find them.
00:49It'll probably take a week or two before the animal is up and moving with the rest of the herd.
00:55We'll see you next time.
