00:00For this week, we're going to talk about the myth busters of what causes the concerns when someone is taking
00:08the love pills.
00:15As a urologist, we always have patients coming to see us, have apprehensions about taking some pills.
00:24Especially when this is a pill that enhances their sex life, because there's some sort of guilt associated with it.
00:31In fact, there are a few things that people are worried about when they take PDE5 inhibitors.
00:37First of all, they always ask me, is this a drug that can actually cause dependency?
00:43So when you take it, in the future, if you don't take it, then you're completely dependent on it.
00:49Number two, it's a drug that you build tolerance when you take it today, then at one dose, and then
00:57in the future, you might take higher doses of that.
01:00Number three, they're always worried about it might actually cause damage to your kidneys.
01:07And number four, it might cause sudden death.
01:10So let's dwell into every one of them to cause a myth buster when it comes to the blue pills.
01:18So first of all, let's deal with dependency.
01:23Dependency tends to happen in a drug, for example, opiates or the sleeping pills.
01:29When people take it, when they stop taking it, they get withdrawal.
01:33This is because the brain recognizes that they need the medication.
01:37When the medication is stopped, then the brain builds up this sort of withdrawal effect.
01:42But for PDE-5 inhibitors, it doesn't work like that.
01:47It's a simple compound that enhances the blood flow to a pelvic organ.
01:51So as a result of that, when you stop it, you actually don't need the medication, don't create a dependency
01:58or withdrawal.
01:59Why do people worry?
02:01It's because of psychological dependency.
02:04When someone is taking it, when they stop it, they always worry about it.
02:09And this has been proven in many studies that men continue to function well when they take placebo.
02:16So it's a psychological dependency.
02:18When they build up the confidence, they stop the medication, they realize that they're flying without the medicine.
02:25Number two is the actual tolerance.
02:29If you take it now, do you need a higher dose in the future?
02:32The reality is that if you do have non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression,
02:42your medical condition might actually get worse.
02:46As a result of that, you need a higher dose of the medication rather than the medication just needs a
02:52higher dose in the future
02:53such as medication like painkillers that you need higher dose of tolerance.
02:59Number three, the damage to the kidneys.
03:02In fact, many studies actually highlighted that this drug actually enhanced circulations to many organs.
03:08But because of the drug is excreted through the liver, then the impact on the kidney function is not there.
03:17However, if an individual actually has got renal impairment, by taking this medication, you're not too suitable.
03:25It's because your kidney already was damaged, therefore, you're not a suitable candidate to take PDE5 inhibitors.
03:32Lastly, people worry about sudden death.
03:36Will this drug actually cause sudden death?
03:38In fact, the drug has been around for at least 28 years since 1998 and there are many, many, many
03:46studies over the last 28 years as compared to placebo.
03:50Actually, it doesn't cause an enhanced risk of sudden death.
03:56Unless you're taking this drug in secrecy and then with an extramarital affairs, there's a small study to show that
04:04that put a bit of strain on your heart.
04:06Not because of the drug, but because of the stress of this extramarital affair.
04:10And that might put you at risk of sudden death.
04:14We're going to begin the month of March talking about how you're going to enhance your fertility.
04:20If you're interested in having a year of the horse baby, then you better stay tuned for putting Dr. G
04:26on the spot.
