AMD’s Bold Move into Gaming APUs: The Fury Lineup and Its Mixed Reception
Transcript
00:00They did lay the groundwork for AMD to enter the notebook market.
00:03And before long, we started seeing more and more AMD-based laptops hit store shelves.
00:08Some of them even featured discrete graphics.
00:11But AMD didn't stop there.
00:13Not long after that, they introduced the first-ever APS,
00:16specifically designed for gaming, the Fury lineup of processors.
00:20These chips featured AMD's new GCN-based RDNA2 graphics,
00:25which were much improved over the previous RDNA1-based IGP.
00:28And AMD even bragged about the fact that the Fury 6400G was capable of playing games such as DR3 at
00:3560 frames per second.
00:36Despite this, the actual performance of these IGPs varied wildly,
00:41depending on the amount of shared memory that they had.
00:44For example, the 6400G shared 512MB of RAM with the CPU,
00:50whereas the 6400M doubled that at 1GB.
00:54Not only that, but the M variant also had access to more PCI Express lanes,
00:59which gave it an even bigger performance advantage.
01:01But it wasn't just the amount of VROM that made a difference.
01:04It turned out that the 6400M variant of the GPU also had faster memory than the 6400G.
01:11As a result, this made the 6400M a much better choice for gamers,
01:16especially considering that it cost only $10 more.
01:20Because of this, I personally believe that Team Red kind of botched the launch of these parts.
01:25I feel like they should have just released one chip that had everything that you would want in a budget
01:29gaming AP,
01:30thus making it easier for consumers to choose.
01:33By offering two variants that both sort of lacked in certain areas,
01:37they ended up confusing consumers and leaving many people wondering
01:40why they could un-get the same performance from the cheaper option.
01:44Not to mention that they sort of half-assed when it came to the inclusion of PCI Express Gen 3
01:49support.
