With the U.S. expected to have more adults over the age of 65 than children by 2034, the demand for trusted, compassionate home care is rapidly accelerating. In honor of National Caregivers Day, Home Instead gerontologist and caregiving advocate, Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger, and Home Instead Care Pro Maureen Walsh joined LifeMinute to talk about the people behind caregiving, and how the right support can make all the difference for older adults and their families. Home Instead provides in-home care for older adults, helping them age safely and comfortably -- with dignity and joy -- in the place they love most: home. For more than 30 years, they've supported families through personalized, relationship-based care delivered by trained Care Pros in communities around the world. Their Care Pros assist with everyday needs like personal care, companionship, meal preparation, mobility support, and specialized care for people living with memory loss or chronic conditions. Home Instead also takes a connected care approach -- combining relationship-based support with technology that provides real-time updates and shared care information, so families stay informed and feel confident, even when they can't be there. Today, Home Instead has more than 650 locations across the U.S. and Canada and over 60,000 Care Pros providing trusted care to families every day. Caregiving is about so much more than completing tasks -- it's about building relationships. Home Instead Care Pros take the time to truly get to know the people they support -- their routines, preferences, personalities, and what brings them comfort and joy. That consistency builds trust in the home. It helps older adults feel safe, respected, and understood day to day. And over time, that steady presence allows the Care Pro to anticipate needs and adapt as those needs change. They also play an important role for families. By stepping in to provide support or respite, Care Pros give family caregivers the chance to simply be a daughter or son again -- to enjoy meaningful time with mom or dad, focused on connection not coordination. That's what makes home care so powerful. When trust grows, the Care Pro often becomes more than a caregiver -- they become an extension of the family. National Caregivers Day is especially meaningful to Home Instead. For nearly 30 years, they've celebrated their Care Pro care of the Year program--honoring care pros who go above and beyond every single day. This year, they honor 10 Care Pros from across the U.S. and Canada, including Maureen. They represent the very best of what care looks like--compassion, skill, reliability, and genuine human connection. When Care Pros feel supported and valued, it shows up in the care they provide and in the lives of the older adults and families they support. Visit homeinstead.com to find a local office and learn more about care options in their area.

00:04Hello, I'm Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger, gerontologist and caregiving advocate with Home Instead.
00:11And I'm Maureen Walsh, and I have the honor of being one of the care pros of the year for
00:17Home
00:18Instead. Home Instead provides in-home care for older adults, helping them age safely and
00:24comfortably with dignity and joy in the place they love most, home. For more than 30 years,
00:30we've supported families through personalized, relationship-based care delivered by trained
00:35care pros and communities across the world. And our care pros assist with everyday needs like
00:40personal care, companionship, meal preparation, mobility support, and specialized care for
00:46people living with memory loss or chronic conditions. We also take a connected care
00:51approach combining relationship-based support with technology that brings real-time updates
00:57and shared care information so families stay informed and feel confident even when they
01:02can't be there. Today, Home Instead has more than 650 locations across the U.S. and Canada
01:08and over 60,000 care pros providing trusted care to families every day.
01:15Caregiving is about so much more than completing tasks. It's about building relationships. Our care
01:21pros take the time to truly get to know the people they support, their routines, preferences,
01:26personalities, and what brings them comfort and joy. That consistency builds trust in the home. It
01:33helps older adults feel safe, respected, and understood day-to-day. And over time, that steady
01:38presence allows the care pro to anticipate needs and adapt as those needs change. They also play an
01:45important role for families. They step in to provide support or respite, and care pros give family
01:50members a chance to simply be that daughter or son again, to enjoy meaningful time with mom or dad,
01:56focus on connection, not coordination. And that's what makes home care so powerful. When that trust grows,
02:03the care pro often becomes more than a caregiver. They become an extension of the family.
02:09National Caregiver Day is especially meaningful to us. For nearly 30 years, we've celebrated our care
02:15pro of the year program honoring care pros who go above and beyond every single day. This year,
02:21we honor 10 care pros from across the US and Canada, including Maureen, who's here with us today.
02:26And they represent the very best of what care looks like. Compassion, skill, reliability, and genuine
02:33human connection. And we know when our care pros feel supported and valued, it shows up in the care they
02:39provide in the lives of the older adults and families they support. Maureen, can you tell us why you
02:45became a care pro? Well, I've been a care pro since 2019. I grew up surrounded by caregivers and my
02:53family, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. And I did not go into that as a
02:59career. But later in life, when I was looking for some part-time work, I wanted to do something that
03:08reflected the values I grew up with, of service, of helping others. And so this felt like the right
03:17fit for me when I joined Home Instead. I feel like I make a big difference in the lives of
03:24the people
03:24that I work with. I get to listen to their stories and learn about their lives, their experiences. And
03:32because they're older adults, they've lived through a lot of history that I haven't experienced. So I
03:38get a lot from them. And at the same time, I feel like I give a lot back by building
03:45that trusting
03:46relationship, by providing sometimes very personal care, and allowing them to feel happy and safe in
03:57their homes. That's wonderful. Well, to learn more about Home Instead, you can visit homeinstead.com.
04:05There you'll find local office information and more information about care options in the area.
