00:00We all desire to know the secret to happiness and longevity.
00:06Well, a recent survey by Comfort Keepers, a company that operates more than 600 offices
00:12nationwide of caregivers who deliver uplifting support to seniors, found that a positive
00:17mindset about aging can help them thrive.
00:21And they're celebrating their sixth annual National Day of Joy to remind people that
00:25finding joy is important for maintaining physical and mental health, as well as improving
00:31overall well-being.
00:32The National Day of Joy is the last Wednesday in June every year, and this year it's on
00:37June 26th.
00:39And this year's theme is the power of positivity.
00:42Our brand promise is elevating the human spirit, and that is recognizing the importance of
00:47positivity joy in all of our lives every single day.
00:51So as we're so busy, it's so important to stop and take a minute to think about, gosh,
00:56what is the thing that brings me joy, or how can I bring joy to somebody else?
01:00It helps us thrive at any age, especially as we get older, physically, mentally, and
01:05emotionally.
01:06The research shows that socialization, positivity, and joy can make a huge difference in our
01:12later years.
01:14Their annual survey asked adult sons and daughters about how they're helping their aging parents
01:18embrace aging with a positive mindset.
01:21They found that three-quarters of adult children say it's important to have a caregiver network
01:26to support their aging parents' physical, emotional, and social needs.
01:31The other stat that is so great is that half of these adult children tell us that their
01:37parent is their best friend, and just reinforces the importance of family and those emotional
01:42connections and those bonds, and how important it is to stay connected to our senior loved
01:47ones as they age.
01:48Comfort Keeper says it's not just about managing the challenges that come with aging.
01:53It's about embracing the possibilities and celebrating the positive changes that come
01:57with each passing day.
01:59Particularly as our parents become older, as we become much more focused on things like
02:04their safety and their health, but we don't always focus as much on just the joy in life
02:10and the happiness in life and making memories.
02:12And so it becomes really important to have those activities, whether it's sitting and
02:17watching a movie together, taking a joy ride, having those in-person moments where we're
02:22bonding with our loved one, we're laughing, we're hugging, we're patting their back or
02:27patting their hand, we're, you know, sharing those memories together is so essential.
02:32We know that it helps release oxytocin, which is our love, trust, and bonding hormone.
02:37And that actually improves the health of both the older parent as well as the older daughter
02:43or son.
