00:00As temperatures plunge, every effort counts.
00:03In his truck, in freezing conditions, French volunteer baker Loïc Nervy is leading a humanitarian
00:09mission in Borodyanka, in the Kiev region.
00:14Loïc spends his days baking and distributing fresh bread to the residents following the
00:19power outages in Ukraine, leaving many residents with no way to cook.
00:25Sometimes there's electricity, sometimes not.
00:28When there isn't, it gets very cold very quickly.
00:32And without electricity, we have nothing to eat because we have electric stoves.
00:37Loïc Nervy originally learned to bake from his father in his hometown in Laugue, France.
00:42But today, he traded his family bakery for a mobile unit on the front lines, a choice
00:47that carries a heavy weight.
00:52I often leave home and leave my family behind.
00:55It's hard for them.
00:56It's a personal sacrifice I'm making for Ukraine and a sacrifice for my family.
01:00But I think it's worth it because if everyone just thinks about their own comforts, we won't
01:04make it.
01:08The volunteer baker is primarily making two types of bread.
01:12A whole grain bread, designed to be nourishing and filling, and a soft white bread, made with
01:17milk, sugar and eggs.
01:21Today I made 700 loaves all by myself from 6am to 2pm.
01:26And most of the people are often elderly and they've been separated from their families.
01:30They find themselves without any state assistance.
01:32So it gives me great pleasure to do it for them.
01:37As night falls on Borodianka, the truck's oven is finally turned off.
01:41But the impact remains.
01:44For Loic, the reward isn't just the thousands of loaves distributed, but the brief moment
01:49of comfort he brings to a community waiting for spring.
