00:10day just about right now there's not a time in the monsoon season where we're not shut down
00:15because of lightning last year the rivers are about flowing everything was gone it was

01:06it all to be rich but are about to lose everything eyeball to revive these failing minds Freddie and
01:16Juan engineer the impossible well I've never heard of an undersluice before deliver some hard truths this
01:24material you're digging now is totally worthless and track down the gold that's what dreams are made
01:30of right there but if they don't at least double the miners gold recovery they won't take a dime in

01:37so it's ten times the amount of gold that's off
01:53that's pretty cool looking huh definitely a neat old building I heard it was the oldest town in Arizona
01:58back when it was part of Mexico imagine all the early explorers coming out here and there was nothing
02:02here whatsoever people traveled all over looking for gold they left their homes left everything they
02:08loved to help their families out and do what they could to try to make a living kind of like
02:12the miners
02:13we help Freddie and Juan are 11 miles from the Mexican border on route to the Kennedy mine with investment
02:24drying up the mine needs to turn a profit this year or face a shutdown we've been in Arizona before
02:30in the
02:31past Fred and it's it's always a tough go here with the heat lack of water and everything else but

02:36know there was good gold here at one time yeah there's probably more good gold down here than other
02:40places gold was first discovered here 200 years ago when Spanish settlers staked claim to the land
02:49during the Pima revolt but the hostile desert heat followed by months of monsoon rains meant only the
02:57the hardiest of miners braved these harsh conditions

03:20Texan George Kennedy a gas and oil worker by trade started mining part-time in the desert four years ago
03:28when his
03:29business fell on hard times we're in business for about five years and uh natural gas prices fell really bad
03:36gold's pretty much uh been my hobby sold my oil and gas company start looking online trying to find a
03:43good piece of
03:44property to be able to mine we look down here in uh South Arizona and we did a lot of
03:49prospecting and
03:50uh this property here uh tested pretty good as high as 0.800 of a grand per yard and it
03:57had a lot more
03:57material it's got a lot of good potential once we bought our equipment got the ponds in place we're out
04:04of money we're mining but it's just not enough to even pay the bills what kind of yard did you
04:10guys
04:10running about 10 yards an hour or so oh we're seven right now okay well do you have any of
04:14the gold
04:15that you recover yeah it's pretty fine no real nuggets to speak of how are you guys doing for
04:21the season so far uh about seven so far how much do you guys have invested in your gold mine

04:29us and small friend investors and stuff I would say probably uh an 800 grand oh not a bank you

04:37from that friend yeah and we've all have not made any money what's the sense of urgency now why'd
04:43you call us now uh we need 13 ounces we have four weeks to pay back to investors before we

04:50shut down there gets to a point where you've got so much money and time and blood and sweat and

04:58involved in it that well you know we're in we've got to go till we can't go anymore how about

05:09and uh I ran my big mouth one day said hey you ever need a hand if it doesn't make

05:15make sense that's it well look where you're at though it's beautiful out here not quite just weather's
05:20so unpredictable uh weather's been shutting us down just almost daily monsoon season kind of rolls
05:28in all the pays wept hard to work with rain material's thick it just really slows our process
05:34down yeah first two years we're here it didn't hardly rain at all super dry and then the third or
05:40fourth monsoon season it was pretty bad wiped our ponds completely out had to start over it was really
05:46kind of catastrophic for us Arizona's monsoon season typically lasts four months beginning in June
05:54moist tropical air collides with dry desert heat causing sudden heavy rain thunderstorms lightning and
06:01flash floods oh no bro we might have problems this sudden intense rainfall is unable to absorb quickly into
06:10the ground rivers move with enough force to rework topsoil and rocks creating gully washers gold
06:18previously lodged in hard to get places moves downstream to create new deposits if we really
06:26start getting a lot of monsoon rain then that that could be the call for the season yeah kind of
06:32what
06:32you're saying is if you don't get it turned around now you guys are done mining here oh yeah this
06:37is
06:37your last season there's only one way to get started let's do a four-hour test run see how much
06:41gold we
06:42with the threat of monsoon season looming over them freddie and juan set a four-hour test run
06:49to replicate half a working day and determine how much gold they recover
07:04using a backhoe robert feeds pay dirt through grizzly bars to remove large rocks next a conveyor
07:13transports the pay to a vibrating screen where water jets free the gold bearing material finally a rotating
07:21trommel releases the pines and a 14-foot-long sluice box traps gold in the riffles what are your thoughts
07:29on that grizzly track it's going to wipe out the radiator and other things on that backhoe
07:34after about four or five buckets that's going to have quite the mountains
07:38a rock pile in front of the hopper prevents the backhoe loading the plant
07:44that needs to clear them by hand before they can continue there's problems there that's for sure
07:50definitely good to have freddie and juan here to see how we do things surely be better cousin
07:56robert joined forces with george in 2019 we both watched gold rush and basically fell in love with it
08:04if it's all funny games until you see the first gold and then it starts getting real you know do

08:10want more grizzlies are loaded i'm about to take another scoop
08:16you know over here on that screen fred yeah seems like it's got a little bit of a choke point

08:21yeah there's some problems inside of there jammed rocks prevent the screen from clearing
08:28and precious gold reaching the trommel periodically got to give it the hose
08:39the rocks are sharp it's not smooth that hasn't been reworked much at all it doesn't look good at
08:45all we don't know how much gold's in the ground they probably have more fine gold than what they think
08:51they have you know different kinds of gold like different situations to me for the gold that they
08:59showed me we might have an issue here we'll have a look hey one yeah
09:15there's some fine in there yeah that was only a quarter of a pan there's definitely an issue there
09:25it's like that storm pushed out a little bit north but still got some weather to the southwest yeah
09:31i'm just gonna keep an eye on it we just have to watch it keep my eye out for lightning

11:38hey guys how's it going you got the gold all cleaned up got a little bit yeah
11:46not a whole lot of no 11 miles from the mexican border in the southern arizona desert mine boss george
11:54kennedy and his texan crew gather for the gold way well let's see what it did all right
12:03george must recover half an ounce a day in four weeks to pay investors before they could pull the plug
12:14point one four point one four ounces half what they need in each four hour run to reach their goal
12:23is that normal like for four hours yeah yeah that's pretty much what we've been getting how
12:28many yards you think you're in right there at seven yards an hour at this rate in the remaining four
12:35weeks the part-time crew would still be more than six ounces short of their 20 ounce target
12:43the good news is there's gold there so ever spec counts well and the other thing is too while we
12:49watched you guys run you know we did notice quite a few things that we can do to help you
12:52guys improve
12:53with the material going through the plant and then also on recovery as well there's a little bit of
12:57light at the end of the tunnel well if we could double that oh man that'd be awesome that would

13:01amazing i'm not saying we can well we're sure going to try yeah some situations it's not possible

13:28going on three and it's like there's not going to be a three for me it's hard to see a

13:38know with a small goal weight like that we've been throwing money at it left and right and uh
13:43quite a bit concerned about how much it's going to cost to fix the issues that they suggest it's
13:49very very uh very nerve-wracking
13:58well what do you think the biggest problem we're going to run into is ground it just was not good
14:03let's hope we can do some things for them you know we can't put gold in the ground
14:12i think one of the big things is that feeder right and all those rocks going back they're going to
14:17take
14:17out that radiator on that backhoe so i think we put a shoot on there and get those rocks off
14:23to the side
14:23yeah and you know if we could fix some of the stuff in the sluices yeah we could get that
14:27screen where
14:28they're not losing material and gold then it's all going to add up what i want to do is get

14:32eccentric working properly put some more weight on it yeah what if we weld some chains on there
14:36going down yeah and then they're going to pop up in the air and they're going to go side to
14:41side right
14:41hopefully try to clear some of that material i don't know if we'll get it to where they can get
14:4520 ounces but i guarantee we can get them more gold here you go guys oh awesome thank you very

14:55lord order me oh you'll be surprised how come you always get to pick the thing you're going to love
15:00it freddie and juan have found three main problems with the kennedy plan first the backhoe which loads
15:10the pay is under fire from falling rocks risking costly stop downs for the operation juan will attach a
15:18shoe in front of the hopper to catch falling debris and safely divert them away to the side next the
15:26shaker screen isn't vibrating enough so rocks build up and jam freddie will add weight to the existing
15:33eccentric below to make it vibrate harder and in a rescue first install chains above to pound the jammed
15:41rocks free of the gold bearing material finally freddie and juan will extend the sluice to 18 feet
15:48replace the mats and install their signature riffles to catch more fine gold
15:56but if freddie can't find better ground to run all of the fixes will be for nothing
16:03how's it doing guys hey hey yeah you know we when we watched you guys run we noticed a few
16:09things that we
16:09can definitely help you guys improve on one of them that screen is getting jammed up it's actually
16:14kind of limiting how much material you can run through the plant so if we can get that to clear
16:18properly do it on its own without you having out there babysitting it and breaking it golly and then
16:23situation you're in you can't afford a radiator for your backhoe right not quite so we're watching you
16:28yesterday have to get up there and throw those rocks out of the way right yeah so if we put
16:32a shoot
16:33on the front of that feeder the rocks are going to shoot out there and you'll be able to just
16:36pick them
16:36up with the back oh man nice yeah then on top of that what we want to do is actually
16:41extend your
16:41sluice box and reconfigure your riffles in it as well exactly put some fine gold rippling in there
16:46and carpet set up for fine gold in there yeah and if we ran that first test it's not good
16:52enough
16:52maybe we can find something better yeah that would be a dream yeah we understand your guys financial
16:57situation and both freddie and i have been very blessed in a lot of different ways so what we want
17:02to
17:02do is we want to do our labor for free if we don't double the amount of gold you get
17:07we'll we'll throw in the material as well yeah we're looking at about fifteen hundred dollars
17:11it's all on your little plant you guys good with that man that is awesome absolutely man you guys
17:16being out here on our side and the experience that y'all bring uh it's invaluable to 100 i really

17:37save us with just five days to increase the kennedy's gold haul and under the constant threat of
17:45a storm shutdown freddie and juan dive in let's start on this chute huh juan eight foot right here to
17:53the edge so it's going to take up a lot of steel yeah birdie got me to clean the shaker
18:00deck off for
18:00him without plugging off this could really help him run more material well we've still got a lot of
18:05work to do to the plant during the first test run this was their main choke point that screen fills
18:11up with rocks and it's not allowing that gold bearing material to get down into the trommel to get
18:15washed it slowed them way down the solution find a way to keep the screen clear and increase their
18:22production and gold recovery here you go sir oh yeah thank you you're welcome
18:29i'm going to weld these chains in that top shaker deck to try to help knock rocks out
18:35of the screen because they in theory they should bounce up and down and go back and forth on there
18:40so we'll try it and see what it does when the hopper vibrates freddie's innovative chain fix will
18:47unblock the screen by pounding the rocks moving them into the tailings pile below a first for mine

19:06well i've welded two chains on the screen so as it vibrates they'll do a dance and keep that material
19:11moving down or through and knock those rocks out of there it improves efficiency and takes away a person
19:18standing there with a rake having to rake those holes out that person could be doing something
19:23else digging pay or whatever around the mine
19:25that's what's going to do
19:38hey guys you got a second it looks like probably have a rainstorm coming this afternoon in southern
19:45arizona freddie and juan are in a race against the elements to complete their rescue mission i got to
19:52start cutting that shoot yeah you guys can help us down at the plant so we'll go down and pull
19:56that
19:56eccentric out they were doing seven yards an hour the first test so if they can get it turned up
20:02some
20:02more and getting the eccentric shaking harder and fixing their fine gold sluice every little thing adds up
20:09in the cut trailer juan designs a tailing chute to protect the backhoe
20:14right now when the material falls off the grizzly it's coming forward hitting the front of the backhoe
20:19by putting this little chute in front it'll catch that material it won't hit the backhoe and it'll
20:23actually slide slide off to the side so we don't have issues with it later on down the road
20:32a 25 000 degree beam of plasma makes easy work slicing through the quarter inch steel

20:50are you married yes sir i sure am what's your wife think about you being out here
20:55uh she's trying to hopefully it works out and it's worth all the time being gone away from family and
21:00stuff you know yeah and you got a couple little ones i got three yeah what ages uh 9 10
21:05and 11.
21:06that's always a killer man the time away from home and the kids
21:10i work full time to make sure i've got enough money to pay for my kids school and uh take
21:18care of the
21:19bills the house and also support this we've already spent money we didn't have for you know college for
21:28the kids definitely no retirement plan or anything like that it was a lot of sleepless nights wife tasha
21:35and their three sons live a thousand miles away in texas george is trying to provide something
21:41some kind of future for our family that's sustainable we want to set up our children
21:47to be able to take care of themselves further in the future if the gold mine doesn't work out i

21:55i don't even want to think about that happening because it would be absolutely heartbreaking
22:01it really sounds like you got everything into this everything i got yeah i do got to make it work
22:06yep it's no uh oh yeah no way out of fixing and getting it going right now
22:19well i guess we could start working on these at the wash plant freddie revamps the eccentric vibrator
22:27to help clear the screen from debris right now the way it's running it's plugging itself up which
22:33slows them down essentially the counterweight makes a spinning shaft uneven so you've got all
22:39the weight on one side so when it comes up it makes the screen throw up because the weight's going
22:43up and when it's going down it pulls it down so that causes the vibration in the screen
22:49add some more weight to it and that's going to add some more unstability the goal is to help get
22:55more
22:55production through that plant we want it out of balance but we want these welds in balance

23:09did you do any gold stuff before coming out here no sir no this is my very first experience with
23:15any other grew up in a machine shop worked in the oil field for 25 years um never any any
23:22experience
23:23whatsoever the first pan i did for the first time me and george came out here prospecting oh is that
23:29right yeah yeah and there was gold in it uh oh the very first span i ever did that's a
23:36gold in it so it's
23:37on from there yeah my first trip down here while we're prospecting i'm like hey there's freaking gold
23:43here this is a real deal i'm like okay yeah i'm on board let's make a go at it let's
23:48do let's do this
23:50and uh yeah it takes money especially at startup with equipment and the claims and all of that
23:56pitching a couple thousand here it just got to the point where okay i'm part of it any extra money

24:02i had this became where it went by now in the hundred grand range that's me personally
24:10you don't want to walk away from that kind of money watch your fingers
24:17you got a wife and kids back in texas yes sir i got a wife i've been married 25 years

24:23kids you have one a daughter she's 22 i have a daughter that's 22 too we all work at our
24:30garden
24:30center every day okay so when i'm out they have to pretty much took the load you know i leave
24:38the
24:38hallway she's behind me 100 but the emotional strain of me and my wife being apart for extended amounts of
24:46time is real money's not everything but you know we started something we want to finish
24:54just can't see anything in there let's see if it clears okay it's hitting on this side

25:22should have been it's one of those 15 minute jobs to install that took an hour and a half
25:28we don't have any extra time here you know we we're here we'll help these guys the best we can

25:33then we've got other miners to help hey wano get in there bridge the counterweights are done but
25:44that lightning's getting pretty close right there and it's left of five are we done we need to get
25:55four thousand people every year but those who survive usually face a lifetime of neurological damage
26:03with a striking distance of over two miles lightning could hit the claim at any moment
26:09we don't want to be welding in there nope we don't like pulling out but i think this is one
26:13time we need
26:14to i think you're right friend i think we need to call it and it's getting close close it is
26:21everything we're working on is all steel it's always an issue when we start running
26:24into weather like this it's going to be hard to finish this build freddy because of the lightning

26:59you know it's a real simple chute we built at the kennedy claim in arizona freddy and juan
27:04are a day behind after a lightning storm forced them to shut down this is going to be able to
27:10get
27:10that material off the end of the grizzly off to the side so that way we're not worrying about it
27:13hitting the front of the backhoe or creating a pile of material here in front while one finishes welding
27:19the chute hey george time to go prospecting and see what's out there detective dodge goes on a
27:27treasure hunt to find high grade pay the stuff you're running has never been reworked by nature
27:33with no dump truck george uses the backhoe to dig pay 40 yards from the wash plant over millions of
27:41years one piece of gold at a time gets into the stream systems then they concentrate up and what
27:45we're running here it's a lot of angular rock that has never been reworked what we're looking for in
27:50a gold bearing area is rounded rocks that have been reworked because that concentrates your gold like a
27:55sluice box just got to find where it's got concentrated
28:00so i like this better yeah the rocks are more rounded right yeah this will flood oh i can see
28:07that yeah
28:15so look at this guy he's moved a long ways for this desert right right right so he's nice and
28:21smooth
28:22this one's fairly smooth but the rounded edges right right you know you can't cut yourself on any
28:28corner of these a lot of those rocks where you're digging over there you could shave with yep
28:35this wash here your best gold is most likely on bedrock
28:39uh in here because it's been reworked down in the bottom that's nature's sluice box
28:44i know the sides are virgin this could be really good right here yeah freddie's hunch the best gold
28:52has been concentrated by monsoon rains into this old creek gully and you say if there's gold on the
28:59surface there's going to be gold down deeper true all right let's go pan it huh yep sounds good
29:11well let's see what's in it george
29:20holy look at that right on the surface look at those some nice pieces too i like it i say
29:27for the next
29:28test if you can get a dump truck in here then uh run it and see what comes out of
29:33it this may be your
29:34future yep gold was way better here but we got to find a way to get it to the plant
29:39hopefully we
29:40can find a dump truck after freddie's successful hunt for better gold one doubles down on the wash
29:48plant fixes right now we're building a custom sluice box for them the old sluice is too short and they're
29:54losing gold because of that i'm going to build a 10-foot sluice box with new gold riffles new mats
29:59and
29:59carpets that way we can increase their gold recovery hey matt these ribs keep the bottom
30:05from warping if you got a swell on the bottom you're just going to blow gold out yeah matt he's
30:11been out here for the last few years helping him out for free but the lack of gold the lack
30:15of success
30:15is putting a lot of strain on him i'm hoping this helps him out dramatically i know he has a
30:20big big
30:20choice ahead of him whether he's going to come back or not so how's your relationship with uh
30:24the guys anytime you're uh involved in a project that's stressful and you're around your friends
30:30and it can be it can be tense you know nothing can ruin a friendship quicker than you know finances
30:38that's why we asked for your help you know yeah i got a little knowledge of gold mining family in
30:45the
30:45past so i said george hit me up i can run heavy equipment weld do everything mechanic whatever you
30:51want to do you know and uh so that's how it started out it was uh a mistake i don't
31:00get paid at all
31:02it would be nice if this were my full-time deal and still have the time that i want at
31:07home with the
31:08family it's nice to see all these pieces coming together you know hopefully with what we got going
31:16on we'll be able to get you guys at least to a point where you're making a little bit of
31:19money i hope so
31:33too man well there's our dump truck oh nice looks like george came through on that after a crash course
31:40in prospecting george gambles 300 hiring the only dump truck in town if freddie's right running pay from
31:50the new creek gully could save their season how's it going we're out of time here and we got
31:55to get some material moved over there let's get them loaded make sure it has gold in it
32:00in one day the dump truck can haul 90 yards of material over three times what they will need for
32:07the second test
32:17that feels awesome seeing a dump truck pulling here with our pace normally being one yard at a time
32:23it's going to help us get a lot more material moved faster
32:28well we'll get this sluice loaded up and get it down there at the entrance to the claim freddie
32:34transports the sluice well things are coming together but we're still behind
32:52can we spin it around now perfect loose loose no doubt
33:09we've been getting shut down by thunderstorms on this monsoon every day and uh they're calling
33:14for more lightning this afternoon

33:31after five days freddie and juan have transformed the kennedy wash plant adding chains and weight to the
33:38eccentric vibrator to clear the pre-wash screen increase the sluice to 18 feet installed mats to
33:45catch fine gold hey george when you start loading this box and finally built a tailing chute under the
33:53grizzly bars to safely divert rocks away from the backhoe and prevent delays in running pay
33:59first bucket one there goes all right keep the start of it looks like the rock sheet's working good

34:20the screen is vibrating perfectly never watched you guys scrape at one time now no remember before you
34:26were over there with a race no need here check that out

34:38the sluice feels really good you kind of feel what those ripples are doing and every one of them

35:40if i don't stop the water from dripping the bees are never going to leave
35:44i'm slightly allergic to bees but i'm also slightly allergic to not eating lunch

35:58they're gonna get me all right well it looks like juan's sharing his lunch
36:14thing beard's been really just running smooth yeah this trial was good should save us a lot of time
36:20on cleaning up and stuff the kennedy crew are near the end of their second test run we've got our

36:28feeder turned up at 12 yards an hour which is crazy we've never ran much yardage per hour so this

36:34be a big game changer here just from the yardage alone super excited i know that

41:17crazy to see that much gold in the sluice box we've met our 20 ounce uh target for sure we're

41:22money back to our investors and it definitely won't be very long till matt myself and robert started
