00:02:35it's deceiving how uh how quick this current really is
00:02:44cut off by the yukon river
00:02:48to the west of the legendary gold town of dawson city in a remote corner of the yukon lies the
00:02:55fraught in mind
00:03:00in 2024 the yukon territory produced over 200 million dollars worth of gold
00:03:07with dawson city's gold revenue rising by 34
00:03:19morgan here sounds like he never takes a day off he wants to make a good living for his family
00:03:24being able to make a good living mining uh you know is a possibility but it takes a lot to
00:03:29do it
00:03:29you know there's been a lot of people that have come out here to to make a fortune but have
00:03:33lost

00:04:35well we're so excited to have you guys here the road's not that great we got to the top of

00:04:41hill looked at the road i'm like yeah we better not yeah well it's a good choice because we had
00:04:45so
00:04:45much rain yesterday beautiful spot down here yeah it is beautiful how many acres do you have i staked
00:04:51288 claims it's about 6 000 acres we're about two kilometers down to the mouth of the creek and
00:04:58goes into the yukon river and then it's almost 20 kilometers upstream oh wow yeah what'd you do for
00:05:05gold last year so we were hoping for 200 last year we got 150 we didn't get as much as
00:05:12we wanted
00:05:13we got a lot of bills and we're trying to grow the business we're trying to buy new equipment
00:05:18he started with a gold pen walking through the bush yeah yeah
00:05:24there's so much to love about gold mining for me being outside exploring the place i grew up
00:05:31i was born here and gold's just in the air at 25 i started a job with a with a
00:05:38prospector
00:05:39it turned him into a multi-millionaire maybe a hundred million dollars or more
00:05:45i couldn't believe how wealthy he'd become and it was just a motivation for me to try it for myself
00:05:5341 year old morgan set up his full-time mining operation six years ago so now here i am with
00:06:01a gold mine
00:06:02gold's super hot right now the price is high
00:06:05i want to find millions of dollars of gold in the ground because it's gonna it's gonna help me grow
00:06:13my family i want to contribute to my country's wealth and i want to build a mining empire that's
00:06:20my dream that's why i want to be rich so i can continue that what do you do here you
00:06:25mine with them
00:06:25i don't mine with them i'm at home with three little kids that are growing like weeds and we also
00:06:31homeschool the kids and i just do a little bit of the bookkeeping for the business three full-time
00:06:36jobs really what you got going on yeah three full-time jobs so over the last six years how much

00:06:42produced out of here i've gotten uh 600 ounces it's all you in here i've got a couple employees but
00:06:48i've
00:06:49still got to show up every day direct everybody what to do trying to make a living at it full

00:06:55what's your goal for this year it's 200 ounces again okay yeah how close are you to it now uh
00:07:00we're at 40 ounces so far we're averaging eight to ten hours on a sluice day but we spent a
00:07:06good chunk
00:07:06of the first part of the season fixing things maintaining but you know things are breaking down
00:07:13and uh i don't have expertise in fabricating welding and so that's a roadblock for me
00:07:19do you have any gold that you with uh yeah actually i brought some gold so that's uh an ounce
00:07:26of the gold we get yeah this gold hasn't traveled along does it want but that's still pretty jagged
00:07:31yeah closer to the source so how much do you have invested in this mine morgan i've put over a

00:07:38dollars into this i am investing the gold in this business to this point the gold's paying for the
00:07:45excavators and the trauma payments to the employees the fuel do you have a ton of ground left in your

00:07:56spot i'm so tied to the mine i can't get out there and do the exploration really we usually kind

00:08:39own but mining isn't just prospecting you got to be able to fix your equipment you got to be able
00:08:43to fabricate and weld and he has to know where he's going next morgan's got a lot of ground here
00:08:49so we got to go find where he's got more gold on his property
00:08:54nice looking plant yeah been sturdy and it runs
00:09:00it doesn't get as much dirt through it as i want
00:09:08now when you bought it did it come with carpets i don't know if that i've never run carpets in
00:09:14it
00:09:14so i'm not sure if that's a good thing or not
00:09:18and what kind of uh yardage you running out of it you think uh we're doing 20 25 yards an
00:09:23hour a lot
00:09:24less than we hoped but i i can't get it to 40. well let's watch it run
00:09:47first bucket one started the timer
00:09:58morgan feeds pay into a six by eight foot hopper which is then washed down into a 24 foot trommel
00:10:07small material travels down into the five foot long sluice where hydraulic riffles help the gold to settle
00:10:25so if i don't get to my target i can't blame anyone else if i fail it's just me
00:10:32every year i get the season started on high interest credit cards maxed out it might be a
00:10:37hundred thousand dollars of debt from a few different loans and lines of credit because
00:10:42the bank they won't touch a gold miner and i've just got to hope that it comes back out of
00:10:47the ground
00:10:47to pay those credit cards off otherwise it's over because 21 payment on a hundred thousand dollar
00:10:54credit card through the winter it's a lot of money hey morgan yeah do me a favor this go around
00:11:04overfeed it yeah i want to see what that water does coming out the back there yeah thank you
00:11:14i had him overfeed it to try to get what i think would be 40 yards an hour to see
00:11:19what the issues
00:11:19might be that's his biggest choke point and that's what's scaring him that's why he's slowing down on
00:11:28his feet see here the amount of material coming out oh yeah that's really slow morgan's overall
00:11:39production is half the speed it should be but any faster pay spills out
00:11:52you can tell that they're screening really big right now there's a sluice box that has nothing
00:11:59for fine gold recovery and that's an issue you want to pan it fred
00:12:05if the pan shows fine gold morgan could be throwing thousands of dollars away
00:12:19how's that looking you know there's something in there for sure a little bitty guys it's not a ton
00:12:25but you know again it was a tiny bit of material every speck adds up you know looking at his
00:12:30jar of
00:12:30gold there he doesn't have a lot of fine gold in that jar but that doesn't mean there's quite
00:12:34a bit of gold fine gold on these claims either that's why we want to look at their gold before
00:12:38we
00:12:38watch their plant run last bucket

00:14:24about how he's running things he's let the prospecting go and now he's got a real problem
00:14:27because he's got nowhere to move to if he wants to succeed he can't do all this on his own

00:15:20let's see what we got 2.35 2.35 yeah it's not bad not terrible no but with roughly a

00:15:29before the season ends this would leave morgan over 50 ounces short honestly i'm a little nervous
00:15:36because i'm looking at it you know we got a lot of coarse gold but we're really missing a lot
00:15:41of fines
00:15:41yeah i haven't been able to catch it i've tried well this gold's easy to catch you can catch this
00:15:47gold
00:15:47behind you know no piece of rebar in this loose box but that super fine gold that's a whole other
00:15:53story that's what i've made my career on is recovering dust one of the important things is looking for more
00:16:00ground and you got a huge property so you know it might be a needle in a haystack i'm nervous
00:16:05about
00:16:05that we really need to find a new spot or there's no gold coming in and the bills don't get
00:16:10paid and
00:16:11that's uh stressful we're limited on time but we'll try to help you however we can well we'll
00:16:16go put our heads together and see what we come up with yeah okay we'll get back with you
00:16:22you know two ounces is great but the reality of it is it's all relative to your bills when you
00:16:28have
00:16:28excavators plant overhead with labor it doesn't go very far
00:16:41you know what i'm thinking on that plant fred you know and you're the one that brought it up
00:16:45he had him over feed that that shoot so we got that shoot coming in right here
00:16:49well right now it has that little mouth that goes inside the trommel need to extend it i think that's
00:16:54going to be the one of the number one fixes because i think we could get him around 40 yards
00:16:59an hour
00:17:00instead of the 25 just by doing that and what do you think about a side sluice i like it
00:17:05it's going
00:17:05to be able to be set up for fine gold and some coarse gold as well his riffles right now
00:17:10that he
00:17:10has under the plant yep so we need some under carpets underneath that everything we do we're
00:17:15gonna have to do it up here and then break take it down there with the side by side and
00:17:18weld it down
00:17:19there equally as important as this is looking at the ground he doesn't have a whole lot of idea where
00:17:25to go next he's got a lot of ground and we're only here a week i'd like to look at
00:17:30some of these higher
00:17:30benches i could see going in you know some rounded river gravels up high so the river was there at
00:17:48one time hey morgan how's it going morgan hey guys good to see you yeah yeah freddy during the test
00:17:55run he actually had you overfeed the plant because reality is you need to run more when i did that
00:18:00you know that feed chute that comes off your hopper that goes into the trommel yeah it's not in far
00:18:05enough and that's why that material is hitting there and then back and back back out we're
00:18:10going to extend that chute further into the trommel who should get you from 25 yards an hour to around
00:18:1540 yards an hour what we need to do is work on your gold recovery as well so we're going
00:18:19to put
00:18:20new carpets underneath your riffles but on top of that at the end of the chute we're going to do
00:18:24a
00:18:24new chute with a new sluice fine gold sluice that's going to tell you how much gold you have in
00:18:28your deposit so let's say it gives you an extra 10 ounces a year that's a big amount of money
00:18:32and then you got a
00:18:33big deposit out there but at least we can get some eyes on it you know a lot of times
00:18:38a miner
00:18:39will get tunnel vision and you know they're just got to run got to run got to run and you
00:18:43don't
00:18:43have time to prospect yourself no time you know we're looking at about eight thousand dollars in
00:18:47material you know that's because we're up here yeah yeah at home it'd be three thousand and then
00:18:52we'd like two ounces a piece which pretty much just covers our expenses our fuel there's no profit made in
00:19:01two ounces a piece four ounces yeah yeah that's a lot of gold and having that plant down for a
00:19:09little bit of time costs a lot as well um well here's what we were thinking yeah so we know
00:19:16you're
00:19:17in a bind right so while we're prospecting fabricating run the plant
00:19:25the end of the month is coming and there's a lot of payments that got to be made
00:19:29the gold morgan finds must cover all his costs including weekly wages for his two-man crew
00:19:37this is what feeds your family totally it's the only thing right now that i've got going on so it's
00:19:43important and um you know i i think i want to go with it i trust in you guys and
00:19:52i think you're going
00:19:53to change i think you're going to change my life here okay deal then yeah we're just a couple hundred
00:20:00miles south of the arctic circle you got about a hundred day mining season so one of the biggest
00:20:05things to help morgan out here is to increase his production by say thirty percent thirty five percent
00:20:12that adds another 33 days in a hundred day season if we can get him up by a third right
00:20:17now on the first
00:20:18run he was running 20 to 25 yards an hour we'd like to get him to 35 to 40 yards
00:20:23an hour
00:20:23i think he's got a good head on his shoulders he's done a ton of work already and uh give
00:20:31credit
00:20:31where credit is due but ultimately if you're going to be a prosperous miner especially with a small crew
00:20:36like this you have to wear many hats and he's going to have to learn that you have to constantly
00:20:41stay
00:20:41on top of it make sure that you're actually collecting the gold prospecting as you're going and
00:20:46moving along because there's been a lot of miners that have a great first five six years like morgan
00:20:50has and then they lose their shirts
00:21:05you got a lot of ground here sir i just want to make sure that i've got claims to mine
00:21:10of the future
00:21:10deep in the klondike region of the yukon the existing cut on the froughton mine is about to run
00:21:18out so freddie takes morgan on a needle in a haystack gold hunt for fresh ground you should have a

00:21:26family yeah uh thank you they're everything i started gold mining and my family all at the same time
00:21:35morgan's 288 claims lie within a 40-mile radius of gold rush legends tony beats and parker schnavel
00:21:47his 6 000 acre virgin property stretches from a creek deep on the valley bottom to bench deposits further
00:21:55up the valley
00:21:59i'm nervous about prospecting this i know there's going to be white channel there but is there enough
00:22:04to make a living there the klondike's white channel is gravel deposited by ancient rivers a high
00:22:12concentration of quartz gives the material a white color since the 1896 gold rush white channel pay has
00:22:22produced 80 billion dollars worth of gold did you dig that hole yeah when we cut the road down there
00:22:35the road working has exposed deeper layers of gravel
00:22:47i like the look of this yeah it's got that white channel look to it
00:22:54i'm going to bring in a friend if that's okay with you that knows a heck of a lot more
00:22:57about the white
00:22:58channel deposits than i do okay i'm a redneck geologist but jeff used to be the head geologist for
00:23:06yukon he knows this area better than anybody taking some quick measurements for uh his main plant at
00:23:18the mine site juan begins work on morgan's plant we're going to take that plant that was designed for
00:23:2420 25 yards an hour we're going to actually make it a plant that's going to be able to handle
00:23:2740 yards
00:23:28an hour and do it efficiently but more of that material that he runs he'll be able to catch more
00:23:32fine gold
00:23:38on morgan's plant the feed system clogs which causes material to overflow and spill out one will bend a
00:23:47half inch thick steel extension chute for the feeder to allow increased amounts of material to enter the
00:23:54trommel drum then to trap every speck of fine gold looped mats will be added to the riffles and as
00:24:05an extra
00:24:05security measure juan will use whatever materials he has to make a 14-foot sluice to try and catch the
00:24:14fine gold being lost hoping to be able to get it all designed out of one sheet of steel so
00:24:22we don't
00:24:23have a ton of waste juan gets going on the build cutting out steel pieces ready for the wash plant
00:24:29sluice
00:24:31and one of the things that we got to be careful with is you know we travel with as much
00:24:34material
00:24:35as we can handle but honestly you know it's not a tremendous amount so we got to use every piece
00:24:40sparingly we've also got the extension chute and distribution box to build so there's a lot to do
00:25:00that's good to see you good to see you see you hey mark and i'm jeff nice to see you
00:25:05out on the claim local geologist jeff bond arrives to help freddie decode the land
00:25:17so freddie kind of got me oriented here you've got a tremendous amount of bench claims on here
00:25:24you've got some really nice grades generally like this yellow line on the map if we can find a piece
00:25:30of that pastry up on the bench you've got a potentially big deposit because that that runs
00:25:34a long ways up the valley so that's reworked white channel left up on the bench ideally yeah white
00:25:41channels it's your oldest gravel in in the valley any gold that's in your creek has been reworked
00:25:48out of that white channel over hundreds of thousands of years rivers cut through the ancient white channel
00:25:57pay street reconcentrating gold and making even richer bench deposits on the side of the valley
00:26:05you've already got a pit up there so that's great okay to to start there and go deeper
00:26:09but until we test it we won't really know first step freddie takes jeff back to the gravel pit that
00:26:22showed
00:26:23signs of possible white channel pain white channel it's a very very thick sequence you have to dig deep
00:26:30to get to the bedrock contact to get to that pastry at the bottom
00:26:38here we go jeff first bucket see what's down there
00:26:46the klondike is a unique area it's an ancient landscape it's been very very geologically stable
00:26:52that means the landscape has not changed it's just been exposed to weathering by water gravity and wind
00:27:00over a long period of time then you get this really really high grade gold deposits in the creek
00:27:14yo next one give us some of that thank you we're going to take a sample from the 25 foot
00:27:21level
00:27:21and see if there's any color in it
00:27:45well let's have a look at it huh jeff yeah let's get her done see what he's got here
00:28:15so this is going to be the start of it at the fixed site juan is kicking off
00:28:20his first fabrication what i'm going to do first every two inches just like that we're going to
00:28:30come and we're going to do a relief cut and what that relief cut's going to do as i cut
00:28:35it we're going
00:28:36to cut it a little over half of the way through this plate it's going to give us a place
00:28:40where we can
00:28:40actually bend that plate once we get it to the radius we need we'll weld it and then that way
00:28:48it
00:28:49holds that shape that form this extension although it seems small really it's going to be a big fix
00:28:55on morgan's plant material isn't falling far enough forward into the trommel causing it to back up and
00:29:03fall out by making multiple relief cuts across a half inch thick steel plate one will be able to bend
00:29:12an extension chute that should bridge the gap into morgan's feeder that's going to allow us to be
00:29:19able to follow the contour of the shoe extend it and that way it's like a an additional piece with
00:29:24uh
00:29:39with the same radius
00:29:40now we got it all welded back together freddy's going to get it installed more material means more gold
00:29:45at the end of the day that means more profit see where he's at now back out at the road
00:29:54building pit
00:29:55morgan has now dug down 30 feet kind of wondering if we're uh getting closer to bedrock here just be
00:30:02based on the rock size it's getting quite large but then we're not seeing gold yet so sometimes
00:30:07the gold and the white channel gravel is really tight to the bedrock surface so
00:30:11we may not see it until we're within two three feet of the bedrock hey morgan try to get us
00:30:17some just off the bottom
00:30:27after another hour of digging freddy and jeff pan material from 35 feet deep
00:30:45this looks like it could be bedrock or close to it
00:30:56no gold
00:30:59top i've got one color
00:31:02wee little guy all lonely that's about as deep as he's gonna dig huh yeah
00:31:09one small speck at 35 feet means the bedrock gold could be too deep for morgan to reach hey morgan
00:31:26so how'd it go you know you may be getting closer oh yeah but the gold's not showing up
00:31:32we should move down slope where we know we can hit bedrock
00:31:36yeah i say we go down there okay i'll get the excavator
00:31:44the material we test panned it isn't worth running through the plant there could be a rich layer on
00:31:48the bottom but it's going to cost a lot to get there morgan doesn't have the resources to strip
00:31:53that much overburden off the top of it i've prospected a lot but i've never prospected in a bench like
00:31:59this
00:32:00we're looking for my future here so we've got to find something we aren't miracle workers but we're
00:32:05going to do the best we can for this family
00:32:36oh
00:32:37in a remote corner of the yukon morgan gets set to continue his hunt for new gold rich ground
00:32:44on the family's 6 000 acre property what are you guys up to at the mine today keep prospecting
00:32:51right we're coming up to the end of the cut so gold's going to run out and we have to
00:32:57totally go
00:32:58somewhere else with the mine just being so busy i haven't had the time to get out and explore and
00:33:03figure out where we're going to go when when we're out of ground what happens if you don't find somewhere
00:33:09to go or it just doesn't work out things will get hard we're constantly dependent on the fact that
00:33:16there's going to be gold in the ground but if we don't know if the next place will have the
00:33:20same
00:33:20amount of gold and to get there we have to invest so much money just to find out what's underneath
00:33:25all
00:33:25that dirt i gotta run see you we depend on him mining and that weighs heavily on him morgan
00:33:39works so hard and sometimes he gets up at six and he's gone before we even wake up he literally
00:33:46breaks his body he comes home injured sore and he gets up and he does it all over again the
00:33:51next day
00:34:10at the fixed site juan begins fabricating the sluice system for morgan's wash plant
00:34:18during the first test run he did quite well but honestly there was a lack of a fine gold in
00:34:24there
00:34:25some of that bigger gold is really easy to catch the majority of it you could catch it in a
00:34:29toilet
00:34:29bowl fine gold's where it's at
00:34:39so the the box that we're building is 36 inches wide by 12 foot of sluicing area and it's going
00:34:44to
00:34:44have about a two foot distribution on the front of it that way that finer gold has a chance to
00:34:49be able
00:34:49to settle out morgan's fine gold has been washing through his sluice and out with his tailings as
00:35:00well as adding mats juan's wide auxiliary sluice system is designed to slow the water down giving fine gold
00:35:09a second chance to settle
00:35:16it's kind of a tough one right now freddy's down there prospecting and it's such a big property
00:35:20he doesn't have a whole lot of time to help me and it's really quite a big build so we're
00:35:26going to be
00:35:26right up against the clock on this one
00:35:41it's got a lot of rocks that have no rhyme or reason yeah yeah it doesn't look that great
00:35:48out on morgan's bench after the bedrock at their first site was too deep to reach freddy and jeff
00:35:55are working their way downhill on the hunt for white channel pay closer to the surface and more
00:36:02economical to mine what we're really trying to find from morgan here is it's pay gravels that aren't
00:36:09under so much waste gravel and so that's what i wanted to target right on the edge here where the
00:36:16bedrock is exposed where it's thinnest gravels and you can get to the point very quickly
00:36:24i'll go pound this one i'll bring you back the results
00:36:35well this is the second pan i only had two colors in the first pan jeff had none we'll see
00:36:46sometimes you'll find gold in a place you don't expect it to be and other times you'll expect it
00:36:53to be there and it won't be so you know once you think you got gold figured out that's when
00:36:59it bites
00:36:59you in the hiney freddy and jeff are testing white channel gravels that are so close to bedrock they
00:37:07should contain gold not a color
00:37:22that'll work five miles away juan reaches a turning point in the fabrication of the sluice system
00:37:32so we got the box and the distribution put together now what we're going to do is we're
00:37:35going to start putting ribs on once we get the riffles and we get the carpets underneath that
00:37:39we want to make sure that box stays flat underneath
00:37:45juan's final touch is the addition of four steel ribs which will stiffen the sluice box and stop it
00:37:52flexing under the load we can fabricate we can build all day long and we know what we're doing

00:40:46of gold in it i like the look of it we just got to find some gold in it so

00:40:57in here okay well it'll be interesting to see what this gives us slightly larger than three pans anyways
00:41:06without a working test trommel freddie and jeff collect a tenth of a yard bulk sample by hand
00:41:14in five gallon buckets it's taking you so long morgan these pigs are you see those yeah oh man
00:41:21but those rocks i'm trying to dig in between them if there's any gold that's where all the nuggies are
00:41:28the interesting thing about placer geology and looking for gold in the creeks is you've got to
00:41:34be prepared to pivot you've got ideas formulated in your head you think you know what you're doing
00:41:41and where you're going and where you're going to find it and it's not necessarily going to be there
00:41:46all the time so you've got to be ready to adjust to sort of a new reality when you start
00:41:52to get
00:41:52some evidence on the landscape in order to be successful well this is the first trommel i ever
00:42:07had out here it's a good test plant to properly bulk test his 6 000 acre property in the future
00:42:15pretty and one take a look at morgan's out of service test trommel so the first summer i put the
00:42:24road into the claims and drug it in this small trommel and washed dirt that whole summer and i was
00:42:30able
00:42:30to get 70 ounces that summer out of that small trommel so at that point i knew i had a
00:42:35good gold
00:42:36deposit and the next steps were just get more gold out of the ground help you get your start really
00:42:42i
00:42:43really wanted to convert it into a test plant but i'm just kind of stumped on how to fabricate and
00:42:49make the right uh sluice runs on the end for a quick clean out i think this has got great
00:42:54bones and
00:42:55this would be a great test plant to be able to take up to your different areas and test your
00:42:59cut before
00:43:00you actually get in there and move a ton of material we're going to be right up against the clock
00:43:04on this
00:43:04one but maybe we can do something here very cool it does put a little more pressure on freddie and
00:43:11i
00:43:11it's really a two-in-one rescue we're going to be fixing both plants but genuinely i want to make
00:43:16sure that we're able to set up his small test plant so that way he has a future to be
00:43:20able
00:43:20to go out and do the prospecting that he needs as well
00:43:36now we're cooking with gaff now we're mining freddie get some gold hopefully huh down at the settling ponds
00:43:46freddie and morgan joined jeff to manually clean the bulk sample they took from the exposed bedrock
00:43:53section of the bench instead of just doing four gold pans we're going to run these buckets we had
00:43:58four or five gallon buckets of material

00:48:34with juan teaching me how to weld it gives me the confidence to tackle some of those lighter jobs and
00:48:41save a lot of money on hiring welders it's going to help me do things more efficiently
00:48:47lesson over with just 24 hours before the final test run one gets back to the fixes with freddie
00:49:04there's a few more fine pieces in there yukon geologist jeff bond weighs the gold he and freddie
00:49:11took from their test of morgan's white channel bench we took a tenth of a yard and we were predicting
00:49:19somewhere around a third of a gram and it dried overnight so i thought i'd give it away
00:49:26and see where we're actually at nice chunky piece there a little nugget
00:49:4051 milligrams that's a lot better than what we thought it was going to give us so that that's really
00:49:45good it's a 25 increase in gold per yard compared to the material morgan is currently sluicing that's
00:49:54phenomenal number for four pails that's half a gram of gold if morgan is able to run this material at
00:50:0240
00:50:03yards per hour for a full 10-hour day it will potentially deliver six and a half ounces
00:50:11people will mine this kind of grade at depths of 30 feet and this is literally four or five feet
00:50:20below
00:50:20the surface yeah morgan should be really happy with that number i'm very happy yeah yeah it's a great

00:51:24sleicing eight to ten hours that's the minimum we want to get on the sleaze box
00:51:30you only have so much time each summer to get everything in that you can one missed day is significant
00:51:38so i'm glad that fredium one are letting me run the plant while they get on with the build
00:51:45i've been working with morgan for three years now i'm from belgium originally
00:51:52so i was working in plumbing for about five years which was a good job but i wanted to change
00:51:58i wanted
00:51:59to be outside this job can be a little risky like the equipment breaks down it slows down the production
00:52:05it's a gamble i'm willing to take okay just wash those riffles off
00:52:13i've been working on this mine for two years before i met morgan i swore i would never work on
00:52:18a
00:52:19mine and then i was like yeah okay let's give it a go might as well slide that one over
00:52:23this way
00:52:24morgan's great to work for it's the best boss i've ever had he really takes care of the employees
00:52:30he's out here for my 14 hours a day if we do a really good season i'm gonna get god
00:52:35for my bonus
00:52:36if he really doesn't do well then i'm not gonna get paid because he just doesn't have the money
00:52:40i'd have to find other work
00:52:51you know we probably have two days worth of work on this little trommel there's quite a bit to do
00:52:57we're gonna be pressed for time on the other side of the cut one begins work on morgan's inoperative
00:53:04test trommel while freddie finishes fixes for the main plan i'm taking some quick measurements for uh
00:53:12the drop shoot we've got to build for this
00:53:17right now it's got a pan that's set up to be able to discharge on the front there but the
00:53:21problem is
00:53:22it's uh it's not real adequate so we're going to build a whole new pan underneath that way the
00:53:26material that comes out of this this test trommel can drop in there get concentrated into one spot
00:53:31and then drop into the sluice box
00:53:36on morgan's test trommel juan will design a custom-made drop pen that will concentrate all the
00:53:43material falling out of the trommel then replace the existing nugget catcher with an all-purpose 10
00:53:51foot by 24 inch sluice box for both coarse and fine gold capture it's kind of unfortunate we're not
00:54:00able to get the truck and the cut trailer all the way down here on site so we're gonna have
00:54:04to take
00:54:05this up to the trailer this afternoon so we have it there so we can do all the repairs on
00:54:08it up top
00:54:10and then i have to put a welder in the back the side by side and bring it down so
00:54:14we can do all the
00:54:14install on the plant let me sneak in there don't use that when you use those flat like that they'll
00:54:24come apart on you at the wash plant freddy shut down sluicing for 24 hours to begin the installation of
00:54:36the fixes so this is the catch chute at the end of their existing sluices we're going to repurpose it
00:54:43but modify it we're going to cap that end off then we're going to build an extension chute to feed
00:54:49the
00:54:49new sluice off this end morgan moves one of his excavators to help install the new fixes
00:54:59sluice i'm feeling really nervous about shutting my plant down and letting them make changes but
00:55:06i'm super happy that freddy and juan are here it's the opportunity to increase production on this
00:55:12trommel and find out all the ways that i can improve

00:56:35we don't have the time to fix it while we're here we're doing all kinds of stuff and we can't

00:56:40doing that oh man the way that's broke do not take it up the hill again
00:56:48the modern mind everything's made out of steel but on top of that steel's always breaking wearing out
00:56:54luckily he's got a second excavator going so we got a backup that's my machine down it's a sinking
00:57:02feeling i'll make fifty thousand dollars in the next week but it's got to go towards a fix
00:57:06it's frustrating i'm just not getting ahead it's a rough situation
00:57:28do you want someone to cut that up for you yeah hopefully we're gonna be sluicing all day we only
00:57:35have one excavator running i need to fix the other excavator i'm waiting on uh the mechanic
00:57:42to come and fix it it's not fun it's like a twenty thousand dollar fix really yeah oh ouch

00:57:56a few years ago we were stressed about paying like four hundred dollar five hundred dollar gas bills
00:58:01and now we're sitting here and we're paying twenty thousand dollars in order to survive now our bills
00:58:08are so much bigger we don't have investors we don't have family that can bail us out and it really

00:58:49right now the test rumble that he has isn't functional so he really has no way to be able to

00:58:53together just six hours remain until the second test freddie takes charge of the installation on
00:59:01the main plant while juan races to complete morgan's test trommel i'm getting everything designed for
00:59:09the sluice box right now because it really didn't have one before it had kind of a nugget trap that's
00:59:14not good enough we've got to be able to recover everything that's there whether it's chunky gold or
00:59:18fine gold this sluice you'd be able to do it got this box all done i got it all kind
00:59:35of lined up the
00:59:35way i want it there's still a drop pan to do
00:59:44one's final job for the test plant fabricating the drop pan
00:59:52we're going to have very little scrap on the end of the plate here for the most part we were
00:59:57able to
00:59:57nest everything in there a plasma cutter's arc can reach temperatures of up to 40 000 degrees fahrenheit
01:00:11the test trommel is going to be one of his most important pieces of equipment uh the reason for
01:00:16that is because that's going to be the plant that goes ahead of the main plant and finds the better
01:00:19material that way he can have a good test program so he knows where he's going and he knows the
01:00:24future
01:00:30juan's new creation will catch the gold bearing material from the trommel
01:00:34and diverted to the new sluice
01:00:49well the drop pan is all done once we install it that little test trommel will be ready to go
01:01:01ready yeah down at the wash plant the second test looming later in the day freddie races to complete
01:01:10the installation of the fixes well we're gonna have to put this extension on here morgan okay okay

01:09:23freddie's finishing touch is the insertion of looped mats which sit under custom-made expanded steel riffles

01:09:38right up against the ramp same on the other side yep put the wedges in so the wood's doing multiple
01:09:46things for us guys one it's protecting the sides of your sluice box number two what happens when wood
01:09:51gets wet expand so that pushes your ripples down tighter so go ahead and just uh
01:09:59get it snug and then sideways gets it right up against the side give or agree make sure they're
01:10:04tight first impressions so we got a lot more sluice around here than we used to have so a lot
01:10:12more
01:10:12square footage of sluice and a lot of different types now so hopefully it's going to catch that
01:10:18fine gold that's coming off the end of the sluice box
01:10:22we've got everything installed freddie got the extension on the chute for the hopper in
01:10:26that's 100 ready to go we were able to get the distribution box here with the downspout that's in
01:10:31and we got that new sluice box in as well so looks great
01:10:38now we're at the point we're going to do is test run you know with a combination of everything we
01:10:41did
01:10:42we should be able to get more material through the trommel and ultimately be able to catch more of that
01:10:46fine gold can't wait to get this wash plant up and going again time to get started get some dirt

01:12:04i don't know what we're going to do the problem's got to be with that injector there is that oil

01:12:11that fuel coming out of it that is uh it's fuel coming out you got a lot of grit and
01:12:17stuff in there
01:12:18so and to me that tells me that the gasket's gone well i think uh you know unfortunately we don't
01:12:25really want to use that other excavator but we may have to okay you know we're not going to be
01:12:30tracking
01:12:30it back and forth it's going to be kind of in the stationary spot so we uh we have something
01:12:34to use
01:12:38honestly we got it down the machine we have a massive fuel leak and what the fuel's coming out
01:12:42of the injector oh really there's no way for us to fix it in the field and uh as of
01:12:47now we don't
01:12:47have anything to run a second test one of them might be salvageable but it's going to take freddy
01:12:53and i both of us to get together and weld on it to get it fixed there's two excavators down
01:12:59i can't
01:13:00feed that trommel without an excavator we can't shovel dirt in there with our hands so it's a rough
01:13:06situation if freddy and one can't fix the excavator i don't know what what we're gonna do it's always
01:13:12something i want you see it one yeah at the front and mine two excavators are down and the second

01:13:30run rests on freddy and one's emergency plan just put like 18 inches of weld front and back i was

01:13:37do four here here and then the front the same way yeah it's cracked just like this in the front

01:13:46we're in a real bad situation right now you know to do it right it would take us over a
01:13:50week to be
01:13:50able to do it we don't have that kind of time we have to do a test run today because

01:13:54on our way so what we're going to do is as much welding as we can and uh just patch
01:13:59it together to
01:14:00try to get it where it's stabilized and we can use it it's the only option we have right now

01:14:06doing this we won't be able to run period it's broke bad i mean without putting a band-aid on

01:14:29like we're doing we couldn't do the test run it's gonna have to be done right all these bolts will
01:14:34have to be pulled air arched out gouged through and then welded properly
01:14:41freddy and juan double teamed the turntable welding opposite ends in a bid to get the second test run

01:14:59well freddy and i got the the excavator welded back together honestly it's not exactly how we
01:15:03wanted it normally it would take about a week to fix it in a shop but we didn't have that

01:15:08we cobbled it back together hopefully it's good enough to be able to get it through the test run
01:15:12but we're going to find out we did some good teamwork there fred let's do a test run huh round
