Greens leader Zack Polanski has said he is “confident, but not complacent” that his party will win the Gorton and Denton by-election, with less than a week before voters go to the polls. The politician visited the Greater Manchester constituency on Friday where campaigners had turned out to knock on doors and drum up support for candidate Hannah Spencer, a councillor and plumber. The seat was held by former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, who won for Sir Keir Starmer’s party with more than half the vote in 2024, but he stood down earlier this year citing health reasons.

00:08More widely though, on the by-election, what I'm seeing is people over and over again
00:13saying they are desperate for change. They're very excited by Hannah the Plumber. I think
00:17her story has captured the public's imagination. And what is on the ballot paper is hate versus
00:22hope. We've got Nigel Farage's candidate, a man who literally makes his living by spewing
00:27hate and division on right-wing TV channels. And in Hannah Spencer, we've got a woman who's
00:32from the local area, someone who knows the value of work and someone who will work every
00:36day for the people of Manchester, working really hard to lower people's bills, protect the National
00:40Health Service and rebuild public services. And I'm confident but not complacent, on Thursday
00:46this constituency will return a Green MP.
