00:45Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:47We begin this morning with a desperate search in the Sierra Nevadas.
00:50Nine backcountry skiers are missing after an avalanche near Lake Tahoe.
00:55The snow slide hit near Frog Lake in the Castle Peak area, a well-known backcountry destination.
01:02Officials say the region had already seen two to three feet of new snow in recent days,
01:06with snow falling at a rate of two to four inches per hour when the avalanche struck.
01:11Rescue crews fought whiteout conditions for several hours Tuesday.
01:15Six people were pulled out alive, with two taken to a local hospital, according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office.
01:22Blackbird Mountain Guides confirmed the group included both guides and clients.
01:27They were headed back to the trailhead after a three-day trip when the slope gave way.
01:32All of this as a major winter storm slams California.
01:36The National Weather Service says parts of the Sierra Nevadas could see up to eight feet of snow over the
01:41next 48 hours,
01:42with wind gusts near 55 miles an hour.
01:45The Sheriff's Office says it will give another update later this morning.
01:49In Washington, Capitol Police say they have arrested a man they say ran toward the U.S. Capitol with a
01:56loaded shotgun.
01:57Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Carter Camacho of Georgia.
02:01Officers say he was wearing tactical gear and carrying extra ammunition when they spotted him running toward the Capitol just
02:08before noon on Tuesday.
02:10Police moved in quickly, surrounded him, and ordered him to drop the weapon you see there.
02:15Chief Michael Sullivan says Camacho complied immediately, and officers took him into custody.
02:21They later searched his car parked nearby and say they found a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask inside.
02:27Authorities have not identified a motive.
02:29Camacho is now facing multiple charges as the investigation continues.
02:35Ukrainian, Russian, and American officials have just wrapped up two days of U.S.-mediated talks in Geneva aimed at ending
02:43the war in Ukraine.
02:44Russia's chief negotiator called the discussions difficult but businesslike.
02:49U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said there was meaningful progress under President Trump's leadership to stop the killing.
02:56The sides met in multiple formats Tuesday and again Wednesday for about two hours before concluding this round.
03:03Another round is expected soon.
03:05Kiev's tone was more guarded.
03:07President Volodymyr Zelensky described the talks as difficult and accused Moscow of dragging out negotiations while it continues to occupy
03:15roughly 20 percent of Ukraine.
03:17The core disputes have not moved.
03:20Russia wants Ukraine to cede the remaining parts of the Donbass region in the east.
03:25A demand Kiev has flatly rejected.
03:28Zelensky has said any territorial compromise would require firm Western security guarantees to prevent future invasions.
03:36Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian delegates remain focused on what he calls the main issues, territory, and demands Moscow
03:45has put forward.
03:46Fulton County, Georgia, is now accusing the Justice Department of misleading a judge to get a search warrant for 2020
03:54election ballots seized last month.
03:57In a new court filing, county officials say the FBI left out key context, including the fact that the claims
04:04used to justify the raid had already been investigated.
04:07The filing argues the FBI's affidavit failed to establish probable cause and, quote,
04:13does nothing more than describe the types of human errors that its own sources confirm occur in almost every election
04:20without any intentional wrongdoing whatsoever.
04:23It also notes the investigation began with a referral from Kurt Olson, a former Trump campaign lawyer now serving in
04:30the White House,
04:31who has been sanctioned by multiple courts over past election claims.
04:34County officials say the affidavit omitted that history and relied on witnesses they argue lacked election expertise.
04:42The FBI seized the ballots and records in an unannounced raid last month.
04:47A federal judge has already unsealed the warrant material and will hold a hearing next week on the county's request
04:53to have the records returned.
04:55There are big changes coming to Air Force One, and they're all about color.
05:00CBS News was first to report the classic Kennedy-era Robin's egg blue paint scheme is being replaced with a
05:07new design in President Trump's preferred palette.
05:10Deep navy, deep red, and gold.
05:13The iconic blue and white exterior has defined the presidential fleet for more than six decades.
05:18But officials tell CBS that as aircraft rotate in for maintenance, they're now being repainted in the new design.
05:25You might remember, during his first term, President Trump unveiled a model of Air Force One with this exact look.
05:32That design was later scrapped under President Biden.
05:35Now it's back, sitting as you can see right here in the Oval Office.
05:39The new paint will appear on the 747-8 jet donated by Qatar, which the Air Force is refurbishing for
05:46presidential use,
05:47as well as the two Boeing 747-8s currently being converted into the next generation of Air Force One under
05:54a 2018 contract.
05:56This Qatari jet could be ready as early as this summer.
05:59We've reached out to the U.S. Air Force for comment.
06:02Finally this morning, a rare sight in one of the coldest places on Earth, a shark swimming in Antarctica.
06:09Take a look at this image, captured last year and just released by researcher Alan Jameson.
06:16You can't miss it right there.
06:17Wow.
06:17It shows what appears to be a sleeper shark, about 10 to 13 feet long, moving along the Antarctic seafloor.
06:25That's unusual.
06:27Sharks are not known to live in waters this cold.
06:30The footage was taken about 1,600 feet below the surface, where the temperature was around 34 degrees.
06:36Jameson, who directs a deep-sea research center in Australia, says he could find no record of a shark ever
06:44being documented in the Antarctic Ocean.
06:47One conservation biologist told the AP that warming oceans may be driving some species farther south,
06:53and that sleeper sharks can survive by feeding on carcasses that sink to the ocean floor, along with squid and
07:00other deep-sea life.
07:02It swam close enough to get some great images.
07:06That's really cool.
07:07All right, before we head out, here's what's happening today.
07:09This morning, Georgia's State Election Board meets for the first time since that FBI raid on the Fulton County Elections
07:16Office.
07:16Expect questions about oversight, security, and what happens next.
07:20At 10, the family of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson hosts a press conference to share reflections on his life
07:26and legacy.
07:27At 1, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt will brief reporters.
07:31And this afternoon, President Trump participates in a Black History reception in the East Room.
