00:31The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:37These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:43Hello everyone, I'm Simone del Rosario.
00:46This morning, a new flood threat is endangering the search and rescue efforts along the Nepal-China border.
00:51A lake, formed by Wednesday's massive glacial collapse, is starting to overflow.
00:56The death toll from that devastating flood, meanwhile, continues to go up,
01:01with hundreds still missing on both sides of the Himalayan border.
01:05Reporting from the remote disaster zone is inconsistent,
01:08but authorities now say more than 450 people are dead and more than 1,400 are unaccounted for.
01:15The State Department says about 90 Americans may have been affected in Nepal and China.
01:20Three have been rescued, and so far, there are no known American deaths.
01:26President Trump called the disaster a terrible thing Thursday.
01:29He says the U.S. has offered to provide whatever help is needed.
01:33We are sending aid, and we've spoken to the leadership, and we let them know anything they want, we'll have.
01:42And there were 50, maybe 60 Americans over there.
01:45We haven't gotten the full list yet, but hopefully they're okay.
01:49But that looked pretty, that looked like something that people will not be,
01:52somebody will be lost, unfortunately.
01:55And we're now getting a clearer picture of what triggered the disaster.
01:58Scientists studying satellite images say bedrock beneath a glacier on Lengtang-Lirung Peak collapsed,
02:06sending huge amounts of ice, rock, and debris crashing into the valley below.
02:11The U.S. Geological Survey estimates more than 100 million cubic meters of material was displaced.
02:18That's the equivalent of 40,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
02:24A federal judge has temporarily blocked new Postal Service rules that would tighten requirements for voting by mail ahead of
02:30November's midterms.
02:32U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani halted key parts of the new rule for at least 14 days,
02:38citing, for now at least, with 24 states and Washington, D.C. that sued to block it.
02:43The rule was issued in response to President Trump's executive order on mail voting and would mandate states meet new
02:49requirements for ballot envelopes
02:51and provide the Postal Service with lists of mail ballot recipients.
02:55But the judge said most of the states have already ordered their ballots,
02:59and some are required by law to start sending them as early as next week.
03:03She said forcing states to comply now would cause, quote,
03:07irreparable harm because they don't have enough time or money to redesign ballots,
03:12update election systems, and train workers before the midterms.
03:17The judge also said Congress has not given the Postal Service the authority to regulate election mail.
03:23The Justice Department is expected to appeal,
03:26meaning the fight could once again end up before the Supreme Court.
03:30President Trump makes it official.
03:32Lake Ontario, at least as far as the U.S. government is concerned, is now Lake America.
03:38Trump signed the order in the Oval Office Thursday, saying the change takes place immediately.
03:43We filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else.
03:46We notified all of the various people that we have to notify.
03:50So we've done everything that you have to do.
03:53And this is official, effective immediately.
03:57The order directs the Interior Department to change the name in the federal government's geographic database.
04:03But just like Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico,
04:07other countries don't have to recognize it, and neither do states or private companies.
04:12Trump says he's doing it because of how Canada's treating the U.S. on trade.
04:16The Canadian officials have treated us very badly.
04:19They're nasty people.
04:20They charge our farmers 400% tariffs.
04:23They've been doing it for a long time.
04:25This follows the collapse of trade talks between the two countries.
04:29With the U.S. now imposing 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods,
04:35Canada has announced its own retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8th.
04:40Manitoba Premier Wab Kanu took this dig at Trump's move.
04:43You know when like a rock band is really over the hill and you see them like in a casino
04:49playing some song from like 50 years ago?
04:53I think that's the part of Donald Trump's presidency we're at now.
04:56Like he thought he had a real hit, a real golden ollie with the Gulf of Mexico.
05:01And he's trying to bring back that.
05:03He's trying to play the hits for his base.
05:05But I think everybody here thinks it's a little sad and it's not his best word.
05:09Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out the name Ontario is more than 400 years old,
05:15older than both governments it borders.
05:17Writing,
05:24And New York Governor Kathy Hochul's response was much shorter.
05:28Quote,
05:29New York won't be calling it that.
05:31Trump had already been trolling Canada with this map,
05:34crossing out Lake Ontario and writing Lake America in its place.
05:37And now, for federal government purposes, the edit stays.
05:42The Trump administration is reportedly looking at a new way to boost America's oil supply,
05:47taking an ownership stake in Venezuela's oil fields.
05:51Axios is reporting the administration is in talks with Venezuela's interim government about a potential deal.
05:56The outlet cites two U.S. officials familiar with the discussions.
06:00The details are still being worked out,
06:02but Axios says the talks involve more than a dozen producing oil fields
06:06with about 90 billion barrels of proven reserves.
06:10In return, private companies, including American firms,
06:14would help develop the fields,
06:16which would mean more oil revenue going back to Venezuela.
06:19One U.S. official described the potential deal to Axios as massive.
06:25Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Venezuela's acting president,
06:28Delcy Rodriguez, have been leading the talks,
06:30which come as the U.S. looks for more oil.
06:34The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at its lowest level in more than four decades,
06:38falling below 300 million barrels this month
06:41as the war with Iran disrupts global supplies.
06:45Axios says Trump was discussing the idea
06:47even before he authorized the January capture of Nicolas Maduro.
06:51There's no timeline for a final agreement,
06:54but Energy Secretary Chris Wright could travel to Venezuela as soon as next week.
06:59Norway has a new king this morning
07:01after Europe's oldest reigning monarch died at the age of 89.
07:05King Harold V, who ruled Norway for 35 years,
07:09died at Oslo University Hospital just after 6.30 this morning local time.
07:13He had been hospitalized since last week with hemolytic anemia,
07:17a disorder that destroys red blood cells faster than the body can replace them.
07:22The palace announced Thursday that his health had deteriorated
07:25and that he was in extremely serious condition.
07:28Tributes now are pouring in across Norway for a king known for modernizing the monarchy
07:33and who once broke with tradition himself to marry Sonja, a commoner.
07:38Harold is now succeeded by his son, Hakun, who becomes King Hakun VIII.
07:43And he takes the throne at a difficult time for Norway's royal family.
07:48Hakun's wife, Meta Marit,
07:50has faced intense scrutiny over her past association with Jeffrey Epstein.
07:55And in June, her son from a previous relationship
07:58was sentenced to four years in prison for two rapes and dozens of other charges,
08:03including violence against a former partner.
08:05He has appealed.
08:07Like Britain, Norway is a constitutional monarchy,
08:10with the king serving as head of state,
08:12while elected leaders hold political power.
08:16Finally this morning, the moon came very close to a total eclipse overnight,
08:20with about 96% of it passing through the darkest part of the Earth's shadow.
08:25Sky watchers across the Americas, Africa, and parts of Europe
08:29got a look at the deep partial eclipse.
08:32And as it neared its peak, almost the entire moon turned a deep red.
08:37That color comes from sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere
08:41before reaching the moon.
08:42The atmosphere filters out more of the blue light,
08:45while letting the red light through,
08:47much like what happens during a sunrise or a sunset.
08:50The eclipse peaked just after midnight Eastern time,
08:53just after 9 p.m. Thursday on the West Coast.
08:57And if you missed this one,
08:59or you were sleeping like I was,
09:00you'll have to wait a while before something even better.
09:03Space.com says the next lunar eclipse to top this one
09:07will be a total eclipse on New Year's Eve 2028.
09:12Okay, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
09:15At 9 this morning, a march in Washington marks 63 years since the historic 1963 march,
09:21with organizers focusing this year on voting rights.
09:24At 10, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh takes the stage at Jackson Hole.
09:28Wall Street's going to be listening closely for this one
09:30about what he says about the interest rates and the economy.
09:34Then at noon, President Trump visits NASA's Johnson Space Center,
09:37where he'll honor the four Artemis II astronauts following their mission around the moon.
09:42And at 1, Trump is scheduled to call the International Space Station.
