After years in decline, the sport of hang-gliding appears to be on the up and up. This year's Corryong Cup in north-east Victoria featured a capacity field, but just five years ago, it struggled to get off the ground. In an encouraging sign for the future, the growth is coming from younger generations.

00:02A sport reaching new heights.
00:05Those that do take it up and enjoy it, they become lifelong devotees of the sport.
00:10This year's Koryong Cup quickly reached its 75 pilot capacity,
00:15but just a few years ago it struggled to get a third of that.
00:19We're starting to get a few more younger people coming through now,
00:22which is really encouraging.
00:24And one of those younger people testing the Koryong skies is proving a rising star.
00:30I feel like that's the biggest barrier, the mental game.
00:32But once you get past that it's just blissful and it's amazing, yeah.
00:37He's keen for more young people to join him in the gravity defying sport.
00:41I really hope more young people get into it.
00:44I think there is definitely a chance for it to blow up again because it's such an amazing sport.
00:50The Aussies are very welcoming and so it's one of the more fun places to come.
00:55The Sports Aviation Federation of Australia has around 470 licensed hang gliding members.
01:02And veteran pilots have their hopes pinned on fresh talent to keep it soaring.
01:07It will be a growing sport because of those young ones coming up.
01:11Yeah, no, the future is still bright for hang gliding.
01:14The other growth area is women who are beginning to make their mark on the male heavy competition.
01:19We've got quite a few young women at the competition this year so that's awesome to see.
01:25I think more people just need to give it a try and give it a go and see how amazing
01:30flying really is.
