05:09I lived in Atlanta
05:10and you know the fight between Atlanta, the Falcons
05:13and the Saints
05:13so I've been watching you on the field
05:16and screaming against you
05:17but I'm delighted to be close to you
05:19so what do you have for today?
05:22My name is Drew Brees
05:23I played 20 years in the NFL
05:26as a quarterback
05:27and now I am an ambassador for the NFL
05:29and IFAF
05:30to help grow the great sport of football
05:32throughout the world
05:33so it's a pleasure to be here with everyone
05:36Excellent
05:38Let's start with the NFL
05:40Brett, you're the head of the NFL in Europe
05:43could you tell us about the strategy
05:45of development of the sport in Europe these days?
05:48Yeah, I think the strategy that we have
05:50is all about the visibility of the sport
05:52trying to connect with new fans here in this market
05:56trying to make the NFL
05:57which is obviously happening somewhere else over there
05:59make it feel like it's over here
06:02by doing things like putting games on in Europe
06:04we'll have five games in Europe for the first time this year
06:07which is a huge number
06:09two in Germany, three in London
06:11we also have academies
06:13we have international player pathway programs
06:16we work with our broadcasters
06:18to provide more tangible connection and visibility
06:20of the games themselves
06:22and highlights across our various platforms and so on
06:25so it's all about connecting
06:27and a new element of our strategy
06:30is to have our clubs
06:31such as the New Orleans Saints
06:33who've chosen to market their brand
06:34the only club at the moment
06:36marketing their brand in France
06:37with the natural connection between New Orleans and France
06:42so these clubs that connect also with fans in markets
06:46have a much deeper connection than just the NFL itself
06:49so the next part of our strategy
06:50is having these clubs connect
06:52and have fans connect with clubs and players
06:55which is very important
06:57Fantastic
06:57So we know the NFL
06:59we may know less the international football
07:02for the American Federation
07:04Pierre, you've been there for two years now you say?
07:07The president, yes
07:08Okay, what's the vision of the federation?
07:11What are you trying to achieve?
07:13What's the role of the federation?
07:15Well, IFF is the global governing body of American football
07:17we are very proud to be a part of this movement
07:21of the international sports
07:24we are very proud to
07:25I've been proposed as a fully recognized member lately
07:28and we hope that the vote
07:30we are confident in the vote
07:31will come in to have us in the Olympic family
07:33so our job is
07:34mostly to take care of the athletes
07:36we are an athletes first federation
07:39it's all about the governance
07:41how we structure the game
07:43international competition
07:44continental qualifiers
07:45world championship
07:46training and education
07:48for referees
07:49for entourage
07:50for coaches
07:51and we do that worldwide
07:53within 72 nations
07:54out of the world
07:55taking care of 20 million players
07:57so it's
07:58You say how many players?
08:0020 million players
08:01in about 100 countries
08:03which is obviously not well known
08:05because a lot of eyes are
08:08obviously on the game on TV
08:10but there's like
08:11millions of stories
08:13like Nausicaa
08:14like Diana
08:14like Mona Stevens
08:16and so on
08:17like myself
08:18that just
08:19get to love the game
08:20want to play the game
08:21join a club
08:22join a national team
08:23and you know
08:24can dream to be a champion
08:25a national champion
08:27maybe
08:28maybe one day
08:29something
08:30something bigger
08:30so we are
08:31on this
08:32on this situation
08:33of very very fast
08:34growing sports
08:35and the last two years
08:37have been phenomenal
08:38obviously working
08:39with the NFL
08:40and all of those nations
08:42worldwide
08:42for the game
08:43we are going to come back
08:44to a minute
08:45in this partnership
08:46very inspiring
08:47but I want to stick
08:48on your role
08:50and the different disciplines
08:51explain us the different disciplines
08:52that you have
08:53in the federation
08:54well we just
08:55we just play football
08:56tackle football
08:57flag football
08:58and flag football
08:59is the
09:00very fast paced
09:01high scoring
09:02super inclusive
09:03side of the game
09:04you play five on five
09:05on a smaller field
09:06you have
09:07four snaps to go to the middle
09:09four snaps to score
09:10and you play as a little boy
09:11you play as a little girl
09:12you play co-head
09:13like in France for example
09:14so super inclusive
09:15very fast
09:16and you play the game
09:18all over your life
09:18in any kind of facility
09:22you play with your friends
09:23on a grass field
09:25you play in a stadium
09:26you play everywhere
09:28that's what is flag football about
09:30so you
09:31how did that partnership
09:33come together
09:33who has contacted
09:35the first one
09:36and how did this
09:37come together
09:38it was just natural right
09:39look it's a long standing
09:42partnership
09:42between the
09:43the two organisations
09:44dates
09:45a number of years
09:47particularly in the United States
09:48that partnership
09:48we probably come at it
09:50from a slightly different angle
09:51but we meet
09:52in the middle
09:53in a good way
09:53we see flag football
09:55as growing our fan base
09:56fans that touch a ball
09:57play the sport
09:58and the most accessible
09:59version of that is
10:00the touch version of the game
10:02the flag version of the game
10:03rather than the contact
10:04version of the game
10:05so it's a fan recruiter
10:06as a federation
10:08they're probably more interested
10:09in participation
10:10which also we're interested in
10:12because we like to
10:12increase the base
10:14of the pyramid
10:14that feeds players
10:16into the system
10:17which is great too
10:18so yeah
10:20we've been supporting
10:21each other
10:22for a number of years
10:23particularly in America
10:24but now
10:25more aggressively
10:26around the world
10:26in our joint alignment
10:28on our objectives
10:30you mentioned five games
10:32in Europe
10:33Germany
10:34UK
10:35in France
10:36at some point
10:37can we expect
10:38to see American football
10:40the Saints in France
10:41playing in France
10:42anytime soon
10:45we'd like to
10:46expand those games
10:48at some point
10:48in other European markets
10:50and
10:50for now
10:51Germany
10:52and the UK
10:53these are tickets
10:54that sell out
10:54very quickly
10:55we get full houses
10:56in those games
10:57if we get more inventory
10:59there'll be more opportunities
11:00for markets
11:01outside of the UK
11:02and Germany
11:03and it will depend on teams
11:04like the Saints
11:04saying
11:05we'd like to take
11:06one of our home games
11:07to France one year
11:07and in that case
11:09it's more likely to happen
11:10so I think
11:11it will happen
11:12in the future
11:13we just can't put a timing
11:14on it
11:14and we're always talking
11:16to stadia
11:17governments
11:18and so on
11:19across Europe
11:19just in case
11:21there's that possibility
11:22that will arise
11:22in the coming years
11:24exciting about the idea
11:25look forward to it
11:26flag football
11:28how do we start
11:29to play flag football
11:30how do you
11:31bring the kids
11:32to play flag football
11:33what's the strategy behind
11:34well I mean
11:35Nausicaa would be
11:36in the perfect situation
11:37for giving her experience
11:38I mean it just
11:38it just started for
11:40I obviously watch
11:41the game on TV
11:42and I wanted to be
11:44one of those superstars
11:45I wanted to score
11:46some touchdown
11:46I wanted to make
11:47some hand one hand catch
11:48and therefore
11:49you just start a game
11:50and you
11:50made great people
11:52travel all over the world
11:53because of that
11:53but probably Nausicaa
11:54gave her a little more
11:55so I stumbled upon football
11:58when I was a cheerleader
11:59for a men's team
12:00and I was watching
12:01the boys play
12:02and at some point
12:03I just wanted to get in
12:04and play too
12:05but right now
12:06that was 12 years ago
12:08now we go into schools
12:10middle schools
12:11we teach flag football
12:12to kids for free
12:13we give them the tools
12:14to play sports for free
12:16in their public schools
12:18so it's even more
12:20accessible
12:21plus flag football
12:22you just need flags
12:23and a ball
12:24and you're good to go
12:25so super easy
12:28Drew
12:28how did you
12:29start to play
12:30American football
12:33so believe it or not
12:34I did not play
12:36tackle football
12:36until I was a freshman
12:38in high school
12:38so I was in 9th grade
12:40so up until that point
12:41I played flag football
12:43and I credit flag football
12:45so much to
12:45to my development
12:47just my understanding
12:49of the game
12:50developing so much confidence
12:53confidence
12:53and understanding
12:54of the passing game
12:55but also my love
12:57and passion for the game
12:58was developed
12:59through playing flag football
13:00as a kid
13:01I wasn't sure
13:02that I would ever have
13:03a future in football
13:04but flag football
13:06positioned me
13:06to be able to go
13:07and play tackle football
13:08in high school
13:08then to get a college scholarship
13:10to play at Purdue University
13:12and then to have
13:14a 20 year NFL career
13:15but never in my wildest dreams
13:17did I think
13:18all of that would happen
13:19it happened as a result
13:20of my experiences
13:22and the confidence
13:22I was able to develop
13:23the skills I was able
13:25to develop
13:25playing flag football
13:27and I come at this
13:28from a lot of different angles
13:29flag football
13:30had a huge impact
13:31on my life
13:33because football
13:34ended up positioning me
13:36for so many other things
13:37throughout my career
13:38all of the relationships
13:40that I developed
13:41all the places
13:42where I ended up living
13:43and playing
13:44and the communities
13:45in which I was involved
13:46was a direct result
13:47of football
13:48but then I got married
13:50and my wife Brittany
13:51and I had four children
13:52well I ended up starting
13:53our own flag football league
13:55in large part
13:56because I wanted to continue
13:57to grow the game
13:58and put the game
13:59in a position
14:00where we could get
14:01more and more kids
14:02access
14:04and the opportunity
14:05to play the game
14:06even if they never went on
14:07to play tackle football
14:08just their opportunity
14:10to be exposed
14:11to all of the great things
14:13about the game
14:13I think that football
14:15teaches you more about life
14:17than just about any other sport
14:18of course it's a team sport
14:19where everyone has to be
14:21on the same page
14:21in order to achieve success
14:23but what you learn
14:24about teamwork
14:24what you learn
14:25about leadership
14:26what you learn
14:26about overcoming adversity
14:28what you learn
14:29about so many of the aspects
14:30of your character traits
14:33and the things
14:34that will carry you on
14:35in life
14:36no matter what you choose
14:36to do
14:37you learn from football
14:38and so we wanted
14:39to create our own league
14:41to continue to grow the sport
14:42also to put kids
14:44in a position
14:44where number one
14:45it was safe
14:46number two
14:47they were having
14:47a great time
14:48and number three
14:49if they ever wanted
14:50to transition
14:50to the tackle football game
14:52this would give them
14:53the best opportunity
14:54to do that as well
14:54I ended up coaching
14:55all of my kids
14:56in flag football
14:57and watched their development
14:59through that game
14:59and obviously naturally
15:02led me to think
15:03outside the box
15:04and how we continue
15:05to grow the game
15:05on a global scale
15:08especially knowing
15:09that I had the opportunity
15:10to play in two games
15:12in London
15:12we played in Wembley Stadium
15:14in 2008
15:14and 2017
15:16when I was playing
15:16for the New Orleans Saints
15:17and to watch the difference
15:19in those ten years
15:20of the amount of fan base
15:22and the understanding
15:23of the game
15:24and the growth of the game
15:25it got me really excited
15:26as to what
15:27the landscape of football
15:28looks on a global scale
15:30as we go into the future
15:31and as we push
15:32to continue to make this
15:34more inclusive
15:35more accessible
15:36to so many people
15:38the one thing
15:38about that too
15:39is I coached
15:40in addition to coaching
15:41my boys
15:42I had plenty of girls
15:43on our teams
15:43that I coached as well
15:45and very few sports
15:46can you have girls
15:47and boys playing
15:48side by side
15:48in a co-ed format
15:49or a boys league
15:51and a girls league
15:52where it is
15:53very equally matched
15:54and in fact
15:55I'd say
15:56my girls teams
15:57were better
15:57than my boys teams
15:58early on
15:59and so it's just funny
16:01I mean it's great
16:02to see the opportunity
16:03for young girls
16:04to have the opportunity
16:05to play now flag football
16:07it's become a sanctioned sport
16:09in the United States
16:10for high schools
16:11we live in California
16:12right now
16:13and they just sanctioned
16:13as a high school sport
16:14in California
16:15so the opportunities
16:16are becoming more and more
16:17and then as kids
16:19begin to think
16:20well wow
16:21not only can I play
16:22as a kid
16:23but this is something
16:24I can play in high school
16:25potentially this is something
16:26I can play in college
16:27this is something
16:28that I might be able
16:29to train and play for
16:30and represent my country
16:31in the Olympics
16:33maybe this is something
16:33I can play professionally
16:34it's just amazing
16:36where this is headed
16:38you know
16:40when I was a teenager
16:42my dad used to tell me
16:44that football
16:45was a waste of time
16:46and I would have
16:47you know
16:48get hurt on the field
16:49and stuff like that
16:52and I want to live
16:54in a world
16:54where nobody
16:55and no girl
16:56would ever hear
16:57something like that
16:58because football
16:59is not a waste of time
17:00it's based on
17:01the concept
17:02that you have to
17:03power through obstacles
17:04so you learn
17:05how to power through
17:07and not let anyone
17:08stop you
17:09because on a field
17:10everybody's trying
17:11to stop you
17:11and you have to
17:12get to the touchdown
17:14so this is what
17:15football taught me
17:16and this is what
17:17football is teaching
17:18a lot of girls
17:19out there
17:20and I see it
17:21when I give them
17:22a football
17:22they become
17:24empowered instantly
17:25and it's a very
17:27inclusive sport
17:27like Drew said
17:29girls and boys
17:30playing together
17:30but it's also a sport
17:31for tall people
17:33short people
17:34any size
17:35it doesn't matter
17:36you won't see
17:37a person
17:38maybe
17:39a bigger person
17:40on a volleyball
17:42court
17:43or on a basketball
17:44court
17:45if they're short
17:46but you will see it
17:47on a football field
17:48because everybody
17:49has a characteristic
17:50that becomes
17:51a superpower
17:52on the field
17:53so it's a sport
17:54for everybody
17:55and that's how
17:55even women
17:56girls
17:57boys
17:58learn how to
17:59embrace
18:00their characteristics
18:01on the field
18:03and they learn
18:04how to love
18:05themselves
18:05which is
18:06why we play
18:07football too
18:08you know
18:10when we were
18:10preparing
18:11I was amazed
18:11by the values
18:13that you put
18:13behind
18:14you were really
18:14strong
18:15on what it
18:15can bring
18:16you say
18:16change life
18:17you have the
18:17same approach
18:19to that
18:20there was one
18:20thing that came
18:21to mind
18:22when did
18:23that sport
18:23was created
18:24what is
18:24the story
18:25behind
18:26the flag
18:26football
18:29there's an
18:29history here
18:30as Drew said
18:31as an entry
18:33to the game
18:34as the version
18:35of tackle
18:36football
18:36for everyone
18:37obviously
18:38high level
18:39tackle football
18:39requires a lot
18:40of commitment
18:42requires
18:42obviously
18:43excellence
18:44and flag football
18:45was the way
18:46for everybody
18:46to play
18:47but right now
18:48since the last
18:48I would say
18:49three to five years
18:50transformed
18:51to create
18:52its own
18:53high performance
18:54level
18:55like
18:56I mean
18:57within IFAF
18:57you're going to
18:58start in two weeks
18:59the biggest
18:59qualifiers
19:00in each continent
19:01that we ever had
19:02so you're going to
19:03have the best
19:04of the players
19:05from Team USA
19:06from Team Brazil
19:07from Team France
19:08from Team Italy
19:09so
19:10you started
19:11years ago
19:12as a way
19:13to play the game
19:14with your friends
19:15and now
19:16we really have
19:17this massive
19:18growth
19:19and explosion
19:20of the game
19:21to create
19:21its own pathway
19:23to the very
19:24high performance
19:24and this is also
19:26a part of our
19:27very strong relationship
19:28is to set
19:30the standards
19:31the highest
19:31as possible
19:32because
19:33you want to be
19:34and you want to
19:35demonstrate
19:35on the international
19:36level
19:37that we have
19:38our place
19:41available
19:41in the
19:41multi
19:42and Anastasia
19:42multi-sports
19:43environment
19:43so
19:44there's an
19:45history
19:46that's somehow
19:47linked to the
19:47beginning
19:48of tackle football
19:49by everybody
19:50want to play
19:51and now
19:51the recent
19:52history
19:52is those
19:53two sports
19:54that are
19:54willing to
19:55go on the
19:55highest level
19:56you talk
19:57about growth
19:58we say

20:35just in
20:36France
20:36for example
20:37we double
20:37up the number
20:38of participation
20:39in France
20:39over the
20:39last five
20:40years
20:40so we
20:41have now
20:41a program
20:42with school
20:42when 20
20:43to 50
20:44thousand
20:44kids
20:44are playing
20:45the game
20:45right there
20:45if we talk
20:46about this
20:47specific market
20:48in school
20:49because you
20:49just gave
20:50them a flag
20:50football belt
20:51a football
20:52and just
20:53play
20:53so we
20:55have that
20:55we can
20:56witness
20:56this growth
20:57all over
20:58the game
20:58this is
20:59honestly
21:00in a very
21:00humble way
21:01one of the
21:01fastest growing
21:02sports at
21:03the moment
21:03in terms
21:03of team
21:04sports
21:05and due
21:06to many
21:07reasons
21:07obviously
21:08exposition
21:09of the
21:09game
21:09over the
21:10media
21:10and opportunity
21:11to play
21:12now at the
21:12highest level
21:13to represent
21:13your team
21:14to represent
21:15your country
21:16to play
21:16with your
21:16friends
21:16to play
21:17with your
21:17club
21:17and yeah
21:18maybe one
21:19day be on
21:20those big
21:21world stage
21:21you will
21:22talking about
21:24growth
21:24the NFL
21:25in Europe
21:25Drew
21:26referred to
21:26the change
21:27that you
21:28have seen
21:28how this
21:30is how
21:30quickly that
21:31the NFL
21:31Europe is
21:32growing and
21:33the fans
21:34I know you
21:34you care
21:35I think
21:35I think also
21:36it's important
21:37to say that
21:37with the
21:38growth of
21:38the NFL
21:39as a fan
21:39base across
21:40the world
21:40particularly
21:41in Europe
21:42and so on
21:42it lays a
21:44very strong
21:44foundation for
21:45flag football
21:45to grow
21:46people obviously
21:47love playing
21:47the sport
21:48but they're
21:48inspired to
21:49play the
21:50sport because
21:50of what they
21:50see often
21:51from NFL
21:52players and
21:53they're emulating
21:54those NFL
21:54players when
21:55they get onto
21:55a flag field
21:56and play
21:56but the growth
21:57of NFL
21:58and the fan
21:59growth around
22:00the world has
22:01been quite
22:01dramatic in
22:02recent years
22:03we know
22:03our avid
22:04fan base
22:05in Europe
22:05has grown
22:05by about
22:0650% in
22:06the last
22:07five years
22:07alone
22:08so we're
22:09always looking
22:10at the
22:10numbers
22:10we know
22:11we've got
22:11about 18
22:12million fans
22:13in Germany
22:13there's about
22:1414.5 to
22:1515 million
22:16in the UK
22:16there's about
22:1711 million
22:18we'll surprise
22:18some people
22:19in France
22:20but only
22:21about 1.4
22:22million avids
22:23where there's
22:23probably 3.6
22:25to 4 million
22:26avids in those
22:26other big
22:27European markets
22:27so there's
22:28some work to
22:29do in France
22:29and we're
22:30working on
22:30that in all
22:31sorts of
22:31different ways
22:32beginning with
22:33today
22:33or not
22:34beginning with
22:34today
22:34but as well
22:35as today
22:35so there's
22:36lots of
22:37growth
22:37lots of
22:38potential
22:39and I think
22:40in France
22:40you'll hear a lot
22:41more and see a lot
22:42more of the NFL
22:43in the coming
22:44years
22:44and we're going
22:45to come back
22:46in a minute
22:47about that

22:49where soccer
22:50or football
22:51is religion
22:52okay
22:54how was it
22:55to discuss
22:55with your friends
22:56who were like
22:57all about soccer
22:58and how did you

22:59push that

23:01all my friends
23:02play football
23:02because I brought
23:03them to the field
23:04and they
23:05you converted
23:05them
23:06yes
23:06they fell in love
23:07with it
23:07because it's
23:08instant
23:09it was tough
23:10at first
23:12like I said
23:13my dad was
23:13totally against it
23:15it was fairly
23:16aggressive
23:18about it
23:19he used to
23:20throw away
23:21my cleats
23:21throw away
23:22my flags
23:22throw away
23:23my helmet
23:23and my
23:24shoulder pads
23:25so
23:27I was also
23:28a victim
23:28of domestic
23:29violence
23:29for
23:31that
23:31because I
23:32wanted to
23:32play the
23:33sport I
23:33love
23:34and so
23:35it wasn't
23:37easy at
23:38first
23:38even the
23:39owner of
23:40the team
23:4012 years
23:41ago
23:42he was like
23:43no
23:43girls can't
23:44play football
23:44they're not
23:45allowed to
23:45play on
23:46this field
23:46so at
23:47first
23:48me and
23:49other girls
23:49that were
23:50interested in
23:50the sport
23:51had to
23:51practice
23:51in a
23:52park
23:52in Milan
23:53and then
23:54we
23:54basically
23:55earned the
23:56right to
23:56play
23:58and now
23:59I am
24:00creating
24:00opportunities
24:01for
24:02younger
24:02girls
24:03to not
24:04have to
24:04fight
24:04this much
24:06for the
24:06right to
24:06play
24:07and now
24:0813 year
24:09olds
24:10text me
24:11on TikTok
24:12and say
24:12like hey
24:13how am I
24:14going to
24:14face this
24:14loss
24:15how am I
24:15going to
24:16face this
24:16game
24:16and I
24:17am able
24:18to provide
24:18them
24:19a lot
