00:00Good afternoon, a very big welcome to VivaTech, Europe's biggest startup and tech event.
00:07It's great to see you here for day two. My name is Ellie, I'm going to be one of your
00:11hosts this afternoon.
00:14Thank you for joining us, both those of you who are in the room and those who are joining us
00:19remotely online.
00:20So for the second consecutive edition, we will be exploring how CEOs are preparing their organizations for the future.
00:30We're going to kind of ask them what keeps them up at night, if you will.
00:35This is what we call CEO stories, and I'm happy to welcome our first guest, Tenuja Randeri.
00:41She is Managing Director of Amazon Web Solutions, EMEA. Let's welcome her.
00:54And here she is. Please, come on in. Let's give her a warm welcome. Thank you for her.
01:02I did want to correct, it's Amazon Web Services.
01:05Amazon Web Services, and you are Managing Director of EMEA, right?
01:11Yes, thank you. Great to be here.
01:12Now we've got it all right. Thank you.
01:14Thank you. Tenuja, my first question for you is, how do you think innovation and new technologies is going to
01:23transform the company by, say, 2030?
01:28Thanks for the, thanks for the, it's great to be here, by the way, with you.
01:31And good to have all of you in the audience and to be face-to-face again. Yes.
01:36Let me tell you maybe a story, because I think it's the easiest way for me to explain it.
01:41Moderna, we all know Moderna, super important during the pandemic in particular, but their CEO, Stefan Mansell, decided to already
01:49move their R&D to the cloud.
01:52And so when the pandemic hit us, it gave them this unprecedented speed that they wouldn't have had had they
01:59not moved the cloud.
02:00And the reason he moved it to the cloud is because he talks about software for life, right?
02:04When it did come, they started to use cloud to be able to analyze, you know, mRNA sequences at a
02:11speed they couldn't have done without.
02:13And they were able to deliver the first batch for clinical trials 42 days after analyzing the first set of
02:21virus sequences.
02:22So that is the power of this technology.
02:26I truly believe that cloud, and it's one of the reasons I came to AWS, but I truly believe the
02:31cloud is the transformative technology of our generation.
02:36And the pandemic showed this very, very clearly because businesses had to literally pivot in a matter of days, weeks,
02:43and months.
02:44You know, if you think about Zoom as an example, they had 10 million users in December 2019, and 300
02:50million users within weeks after the pandemic.
02:54So, but here's where I then will close out.
02:57It's not just about technology, unfortunately, because I think that technology exists.
03:01It's actually about culture, skills, mindset, and innovation.
03:05And there's maybe four lessons we've learned and all the transformation we've done, if I may.
03:10The first is you need top-down mandate and aggressive targets, and that makes all the difference, the leadership.
03:17Two is we've got to hire talent that's really hungry to build and work backwards from customers.
03:23Three, we need leaders to really disintermediate the core business and come up with new ideas.
03:29And I think four, we have to experiment like crazy, because innovation is all about experimentation.
03:34So hopefully that gives you something to do on.
03:37So you just spoke about leaders who actually do lead and who come up with ideas.
03:42So my next question for you is going to be around what some of us deem buzzwords.
03:49I'm talking about the metaverse.
03:51I'm talking about Web3.
03:53What is your take on this, first of all?
03:56Are they buzzwords?
03:58And if there was just one technology that you would bet on to further your business, what would that technology
04:04be?
04:05I hate to sound repetitive, but I truly believe cloud is actually that technology.
04:10And the reason I think that is because actually some of the technologies you were talking about,
04:15and, you know, look, I won't necessarily pontificate on whether it's a buzzword or not.
04:20The fact is the cloud enables a lot of those, whether it's metaverse or Web3, AI, IoT, machine learning, et
04:27cetera.
04:28And if you go back to the 1800s, Florence Nightingale, right?
04:34I don't know how many of you have seen Florence Nightingale's rose chart,
04:37but she used data to explain why and how mortality was being caused, right, in essence, in the hospitals.
04:43Well, I'm going to bring data back into our conversation because I think data is actually the trigger to reinvention.
04:50And according to IDC forecast for 2022, there's 97 zettabytes of data that is being stored and replicated.
05:01And for most of you, you may not know what a hard disk looks like,
05:05but if you take a one terabyte hard disk, that's 15 round trips from the Earth to the moon.
05:1215?
05:1315, 15, one five, if you were to put all that data on one terabyte hard disks, right?
05:19So for me, I think using data to be able to actually transform businesses,
05:24I mean, a great example of this, by the way, is I don't know how many of you know CMACGM
05:29here in France.
05:30They're building an intelligent transportation system using data
05:35so that they can be smarter about where and how they manage their fleet, right,
05:39which also enables sustainability, right, to be much more predictive and know exactly what to do when and where.
05:46And I think the power is not only in the data, but in the ability to analyze that data and
05:52apply machine learning to it.
05:53Thank you so much for that.
05:55I would like to make a segue from data to people and talk about the workplace and how it has
06:03evolved all through and since this pandemic.
06:07are you using hybrid work, you know, in office, at home, at all?
06:14And if you are, is this one of the solutions that you're basing your recruiting on?
06:22So, look, I think hybrid is here to say, that's my personal view.
06:28I think it's phenomenal because it opens us up to talent all over the world and so we shouldn't lose
06:34this.
06:35And actually what's wonderful about what we're doing at Amazon and Amazon Web Services is we have a completely flexible
06:42work from here is the hashtag we use.
06:46And the reason we say that is if you look at the data, Gen Z and Millennials say a third
06:51of them say they want to work from home.
06:54Three quarters of people say they want to work flexibly.
06:57Now, I do personally think that from an apprenticeship perspective and from a culture and learning perspective,
07:04it is actually wonderful to come together as well.
07:07Yes.
07:07But we believe in coming together at customers.
07:10We believe in coming together at our partner sites as well as the office, right?
07:14So, the word hybrid is true and I think that's critical.
07:18But if I go back to the skill point for a moment, there's a report that's been published today by
07:24Public First.
07:25And what you will see is it's not technology, as I said earlier.
07:2870% of businesses are concerned about the digital skills gap and how that therefore prevents them from actually growing.
07:36And one of the things we are doing, by the way, is we have committed to training 29 million people
07:42for free by 2030.
07:45And this is really important because it's anybody.
07:48And you can access our programs online, which is Cloud Skills Builder, or through the university programs we run called
07:55Academy.
07:55And there's one I love most, which is called Get IT.
07:59It's working with young girls in the ages of 12 to 15.
08:03Get IT?
08:03Get IT.
08:05Right.
08:05And these are not just girls, young students, but particularly girls, to help them build apps.
08:10And so, they actually come into these app development competitions.
08:14I had the luxury of judging a few recently.
08:16And it's phenomenal what they come up with.
08:18All of them, by the way, tend to focus on ESG-specific things.
08:23And another one is Restart, which is a 12-week program, classroom training, and gets you your first job, by
08:30the way, in IT.
08:31So, skills is critical.
08:33We have to address the skills gap, and we're super committed to doing that.
08:36Very quickly, because we only have a few seconds left, actually, but it's okay.
08:41We can take up a little bit more time.
08:43What do you do for ESG?
08:45I imagine it's important for you as a company.
08:48What do you stand for?
08:50Thanks for that.
08:51Amazon founded the Climate Pledge, which I think is really important.
08:55But more importantly, we've committed ourselves to be powering 100% of our operations with renewable energy.
09:02And we commission utility-grade wind and solar projects.
09:06So, there's about 300 projects, by the way.
09:0838 of them are in Europe.
09:10And just to put it in context for Paris, when those come online, they'll power 11.4 million homes.
09:15So, we are literally very, very committed to not only the infrastructure, our cloud is proven to be 5x more
09:24efficient than an average data center,
09:26but also to helping our customers with use cases around sustainability, because I think that's really critical as well.
09:32Thank you so much.
09:33And that is the end of part one of this interview.
09:47So, Tanuja, for the second part, I would like to talk about your engagement with your customers
09:54and for you to share with us the findings of a new report that you touched up very briefly upon
10:02a few seconds ago
10:03that's focused on unlocking Europe's digital ambitions.
10:08Can you give us more information about this?
10:10Yeah, no, thank you.
10:11I mean, you know, look, I've had the pleasure and honor of meeting a lot of our customers and partners.
10:16I joined AWS about 10 months ago, and I've met hundreds and hundreds, many of you, I hope, in the
10:22audience at some point I will get to meet as well.
10:24And there's three things that are themes on their mind.
10:28The first is actually, help me become a tech company.
10:32So, it doesn't matter which industry you're in.
10:34Sorry, louder.
10:35Help me become a tech company, whether you're insurance or healthcare or retail, it doesn't matter.
10:40Everybody wants to be a tech company.
10:42And often they're like, help me be the Amazon of my industry.
10:45The second is around, help me really embed sustainability into my strategy.
10:50And then the third is usually, scale, scale, scale.
10:53So, this report by Public First has been published today about unlocking Europe's digital ambitions.
11:00It actually reflects on those three things specifically.
11:05And what it is showing is that if we can address the challenges we're talking about,
11:10we can unlock as Europe almost 2.8 trillion euros, by the way, of economic value, which, just to put
11:17in context, is 21% of EU current economy, right?
11:2355% of that 2.8 trillion euros is related to cloud.
11:29And so, what we really need to do is accelerate adoption of cloud.
11:34Today, only 26% of companies in Europe are using cloud.
11:37We've got to get that to 75% in order to be able to achieve these kind of goals that
11:43we're talking about, right?
11:45And within that, what the report actually points to is that Europe needs about 20 million ICT specialists.
11:54Today, we're about 8.5.
11:56So, there's a lot to do in order for us to get there.
11:59And I think if we don't address the skills gap, we are not going to be able to make and
12:04unlock this kind of value.
12:05In fact, according to the report, we will probably only unlock 45% of that value.
12:11So, there is quite a lot to be done, and that's what this report is highlighting.
12:15As someone who is in this field on a daily basis, why do you think only 20-plus percent of
12:22companies are using the cloud today in Europe?
12:26It's great.
12:27And look, I think the pandemic has massively accelerated that shift.
12:33People realized that actually the cloud could help you scale up, scale down.
12:37It's more secure.
12:38It's more innovative.
12:39It's actually more sustainable.
12:40But it took that to kind of push people to really pivot very quickly.
12:45I think the issue is not, again, about technology.
12:48It's customers having to ensure that the transformation mindset within businesses is the critical thing.
12:56And we need to do our part by giving businesses use cases that they can actually deliver again.
13:03And so, supply chain, for example, transparency, or smart factory, or connected cars.
13:08And you'll see a lot of this today.
13:10And at our booth, by the way, which is 41, just to do a bit of advertising there.
13:15Is security an issue at all?
13:18Is there a perception that the cloud isn't as secure as it should be or as it could be?
13:23You know, the nice thing about the report we just published is actually 46% of people that were interviewed
13:28suggest that they got better security once they moved to cloud.
13:32But I do appreciate you saying that because the fact is we do need to demystify.
13:39Security is job zero, actually.
13:41We've got more security resources than any individual organization in the world.
13:46200-plus security compliance and certifications.
13:51It is secure, believe me.
13:53But, yes, we need to work with regulators and help them really help businesses understand what cloud can do for
14:01them.
14:01Thank you so much for this.
14:03And we move on to the third and final segment of this interview.
14:09It's question time.
14:17Now, when the audience learned that you were coming, Tenuja, they sent us some questions.
14:24And we picked one.
14:25Here is the question.
14:26So, you recently spoke at the Women in Tech event in Amsterdam.
14:32In your view, how can startups create a more diverse and inclusive culture?
14:39It's a great question.
14:40It's one I'm very passionate about.
14:43And, by the way, I do host a podcast which is all about tips and tricks on how you can
14:50further your career journey.
14:51But, look, I think there's four things that I would call out very specifically.
14:55The first is we have to inspire the next generation of talent.
14:59So, we need to build a pipeline of talent in STEM.
15:04And not just STEM.
15:05I'm going to say STEAM because we need to really start thinking about EQ and IQ.
15:10So, you don't need to be a coder to have a career in tech, by the way.
15:15I am not.
15:16I am an economist and an MBA student.
15:19But I love everything about technology.
15:21So, I think programs like GetIT, as I mentioned, is inspiring the next generation.
15:24I think the second thing is about re-skilling.
15:27Because when you go from traditional to digital, you've got to start re-skilling.
15:30And a great example is Telia, who is the Nordics telecom operator, who is re-skilling 2,000 of their
15:37workforce on digital skills.
15:39So, I think that's super important.
15:41I have the impression that the microphone isn't working too good.
15:45Can you hear her properly?
15:47Yeah, it's coming in and out.
15:49So, can the tech team please just bring us perhaps another microphone?
15:53Thank you.
15:53So, we can hear Tanuja properly.
15:56Because this is really important.
15:58So, I'm set.
16:00Please keep on going and we're bringing you a new microphone.
16:02Let me try to keep it as close as I can.
16:04So, I think the re-skilling bit is really, really critical, right?
16:08Because the fact is, there were a number of us who were not born in the cloud.
16:12Luckily, with startups, you're all born in the cloud.
16:15So, there's a natural tendency towards cloud, actually.
16:18But I do think training and certification is really critical for folks.
16:23And I think the third thing is, in order to encourage diversity, we need to be able to train leaders
16:30and managers to actually know how to work with diverse populations, right?
16:36We need more flexible work policies.
16:39We need to be able to give people the opportunity to go in, have kids, and come back.
16:43You know, at Amazon, we have a 20-week paid program for birthing parents.
16:49You can even share some of that, by the way, with your partners.
16:53And then we need to be able to ensure when people ram back in that they're feeling valued and connected.
16:59Because that's just really critical.
17:00And then one for you, right?
17:02And I say this from my own career.
17:05It's super important for each of us to have a plan.
17:08Where do we want to go?
17:10I mean, Alice used to say, Alice in Wonderland, you don't know where you're going.
17:14Any road is going to take you there.
17:15Write your plan.
17:17Write your PRFAQ, as we say at Amazon.
17:19And then work backwards and take the risk on your career.
17:22You know, that's what I would highly encourage you to do.
17:25But we just all need to continue to focus on this because we're not there.
17:30We do not have enough role models yet.
17:33Tenuja, what's the name of your podcast?
17:36I'll pitch it.
17:37It's Power Women Speak.
17:40And it's available on any of the podcast channels that you can see.
17:43But thank you for dialing in.
17:46So if you want more, that's where you go.
17:48Tenuja Renderi, everyone.
17:50Let's give a warm round of applause.
17:50Thank you so much.
17:52Thank you, Ella.
17:52Thank you.
17:53Thank you for being here.
