00:00Why do you spend your days picking up food waste?
00:02It's a really great question. Why do I spend my days picking up food waste?
00:06So, we take food waste from businesses and turn it into compost.
00:11And then that compost is available for local people to buy or to have, if they can't afford it.
00:18To use that, to grow food, then goes back to the cafes that we then eat.
00:23And so we're trying to create that circle,
00:25but also we're trying to create a greater understanding of what that circle means for people.
00:31During COVID, the local growers got really stressed.
00:36The amount of land turned into agricultural production increased
00:39because people have time to grow and they're like, okay, can't do it for the gardens.
00:42Did they run out of compost pretty quickly?
00:44The hardcore composting began in 23, 24.
00:48We started collecting, started turning it into compost.
00:51Just like a closed loop system for organic material flows in communities.
00:57Actually, communities like ours that are at the end of the supply chain.
01:00I chose to use Crew Compostio for my cafe
01:03because I like to know where all of our waste is going.
01:07So, I think we're sort of creating that space for people who do care,
01:11but just don't have the time or the facility to do it properly.
01:15We decided to focus on business waste also because we wanted to create jobs.
01:18We didn't want to rely exclusively on.
01:20We're aware that a lot of working with waste and litter picking ends up,
01:24the burden ends up on volunteering.
01:26I had an experience the other day though, which put it into clear view.
01:31I was at the community hub and we were cooking a lunch for the community.
01:36We were able to come in, have brunch, meet each other.
01:39And in the process of preparing the brunch, all of the food scraps,
01:44like the peelings and, you know, the onion peelings and everything,
01:47went into our food waste box.
01:50And that food waste box obviously comes here, goes into the compost.
01:54And then that compost goes to Ros, local grower,
01:58and it was her veg that we were cooking.
02:00And it was like this beautiful moment of the cycle coming together.
02:05I think some people have said to me that this makes them feel really good
02:09about the town that they live in, knowing that this is happening,
02:11even if they're not like actively involved.
02:13The Welsh community talk about this, you know, Coneven, sense of place.
02:18And that's what we're trying to grow and foster.
02:22Yeah.
02:23I get a lot of people, you ask people why they want to work with us.
02:26And a lot of people say like, it gives me hope.
02:28I get a lot of people, I get a lot of people, I get a lot of people.
