00:02Lifting the lid on life on campus.
00:05Racism is deeply embedded in our universities.
00:08The findings of a landmark study by the Australian Human Rights Commission
00:12delivered a reckoning for the higher education sector.
00:16Universities are great institutions, but they're not perfect.
00:21And Australia is not a racist country, but racism exists.
00:2476,000 students and staff across the nation's 42 campuses detailed widespread,
00:31pervasive and systemic discrimination in all forms.
00:36There are 1.4 million words of experiences that were shared with us.
00:41That is harrowing reading at times.
00:44It happens, but you wave it off because you know you have people around you who support you.
00:49It shows that change needs to happen, something needs to be done.
00:5270% of respondents experienced indirect racism, with 15% directly impacted.
01:00Jewish and Palestinian students and staff face the highest rates of racism at more than 90%.
01:07Only 6% of people who experienced it were willing to make a complaint.
01:13And that is a systemic issue.
01:15The report shows that universities are more concerned about their reputation
01:18than actually addressing racism on campus.
01:20The report makes 47 recommendations, including a national anti-racism plan and stronger complaint systems.
01:28The federal government says it's considering the findings.
01:32This report tells us that we're not doing enough at the moment to stamp it out where we find it,
01:37or to prevent it in the first place.
01:40Universities Australia says it'll work with the government on reforms.
01:44What we've seen so far is these voluntary policies, these one approach at one university, another another,
01:49just is not working.
01:50We need a comprehensive approach.
01:51To make campuses safe for all.
01:54To make campuses safe for all.
01:54And that must begin to agree.
