Zambia has slammed its border shut to all South African livestock and related products in an urgent biosecurity move, as a devastating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak spreads across South Africa, prompting Pretoria to declare a national disaster.

00:08The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock announced the immediate suspension of all livestock import permits from South Africa.
00:16The ban extends to cloven-roofed animals, livestock feeds, trophies, skins, hides, and even dairy products.
00:24This comes after President Siri Ramaphosa declared the foot-and-mouth crisis a national disaster last week,
00:31admitting it is among the worst outbreaks the country has experienced.
00:35The disease has now spread to seven of nine provinces.
00:39Meanwhile, the beef industry is reeling.
00:41Exports fell 26 percent in 2025, with shipments to China dropping 69 percent following a ban in May.
00:48Zambian authorities say this precautionary measure will be reviewed depending on how the outbreak situation evolves in South Africa.
