00:01One doses, and then another.
00:07South Africa has launched a mass vaccination campaign for its cattle
00:11in the face of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that's gripping the entire country.
00:17The disease is not usually deadly, but it weakens the herds.
00:22Usually you see the wounds, very fresh wounds, bleeding sores, and they salivate a lot.
00:30Because the lesions are in the mouth and followed by in the foot.
00:33So in between the foot in there, that's where you find lesions also.
00:38So many of them, you see them struggling to walk because of the pain coming from the foot there.
00:44Those are the primary points where you get the virus.
00:47For farmers, another problem with the disease is financial.
00:51It has led countries like China to stop beef imports from South Africa.
00:55But there is hope.
00:58For the first time in 30 years, we now have a strategy to get us to be foot-and-mouth
01:02free.
01:03The first part of that strategy is to get on top of this current crisis and vaccinate at scale.
01:0880% of the national herd by December, 70% reduction in outbreak.
01:13Thereafter, we will continue to vaccinate, and then we will stop vaccinating in certain areas,
01:18and then apply it to the World Organization of Animal Health for FMD-free status with vaccination.
01:25The task at hand is, however, far from easy.
01:30Nearly 20 million cattle need to get vaccinated.
01:34Around 2 million have already received their doses.
01:37And then the point of the crisis, we will continue to visit the promises.
01:37Last week, we have submitted some details.
01:38Stay tuned.
