Nigeria's Argungu fishing festival returns after six-year hiatus

Fishermen from across West Africa flocked to Nigeria’s Matan Fada river on Saturday to take part in the famous Argungu fishing festival.

00:00Fishermen from across West Africa gathered on the banks of Nigeria's Matanfada River on Saturday
00:07to take part in the Agungu Fishing Festival. The UNESCO-listed event is back after a six-year
00:14hiatus due to insecurity in the northwestern Kebi state.
00:21This year things went peacefully and there was a bigger crowd than last time.
00:26Also, we caught 100% more fish compared to the last event.
00:33Fishermen float on the river on gourds and catch the fish in their hands or in nets.
00:38This year's highlight was a 59 kilo monster catch netting the winner a million naira in cash.
00:46This is my second time here. My first experience was in the year 2020 and I didn't have much
00:54knowledge to have a full experience of the Agungu Fishing Festival and it has been very awesome.
01:04Over the decades the festival has grown into one of Nigeria's biggest cultural events,
01:10drawing thousands of spectators including this year President Bola Timbu.
