00:31Latin American peoples around the world celebrate the 2026 carnivals with joy, music, and expressions of each region's cultural identity.
00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Mirma Shelton from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:52We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:06In the United States, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene accuses President Donald Trump of being the most active opponent of the
01:16republication of the files of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
01:20Taylor Greene is one of the republicans who was close to the president.
01:26Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, withdrawn from parliamentary activity due to differences with the government office party colleagues, has given an
01:36interview in which she accuses Trump of very serious acts.
01:40Taylor Greene points out that the head of state made his worst political calculation and adds that he signed the
01:49transparency law because he was cornered.
01:53During the interview with an alternative media outlet, the influential Republican asserted that the Make America Wake Again campaign was
02:03a big lie.
02:10The energy crisis in Cuba caused by the criminal intensification of the U.S. blockade is impacting vital areas throughout
02:19the island.
02:20However, the government and the people are organizing and resisting.
02:24The shortage has required the government and the people to take action throughout the country.
02:31In this context, priority is given to the health and education sectors, putting human life above all else.
02:39The party's top leaders, together with the people, supervise everything from health, transportation and academic areas to production zones.
02:50Meanwhile, the peoples of the Wall are showing solidarity and preparing vital assistance for the island.
03:04In Guatemala, former leaders of the ancestral Aboriginal organization 48 Cantons del Totonicapan has been in prison since 2023,
03:17when they were arrested during protests in defense of the vote that finally brought Fernando Revale to the presidency.
03:26Indigenous and peace and leaders denounce that the judicial authorities and institutions are intentionally delaying their trials.
03:37Our colleague, Rolanda Garcia, has the details.
03:44Social organizations, together with Luis Pacheco and Hector Chucklin, former Indigenous authorities from the 48 Cantons of Totonicapan,
03:51denounce that there are delays and intentional irregularities in the judicial process being carried out for their participation in the
03:57mobilizations in defense of the vote in 2023.
04:00They assert that their cases are just one example of the judicial persecution by the public ministry against social movements
04:05and leaders in the country.
04:10It has been known for persecuting students and criminalizing Indigenous leaders.
04:15As we are now seeing Luis Pacheco and Hector Chucklin, he has a sinister ruling in favor of impunity, which
04:19is led and protected by the public prosecutor's office.
04:26Indigenous leaders have been in pretrial detention for more than eight months, accused of terrorism, sedition, illegal association,
04:33for leading a series of protests in different parts of the country in defense of the 2023 election results.
04:41We once again confirmed that the lack of objectivity in the application of Guatemalan justice.
04:46We hope to God that objectivity will finally prevail.
04:53Indigenous organizations allege that Judge Freddy Arellana was recently appointed to hear the case involving both Indigenous authorities,
05:00but they accuse him of promoting impunity.
05:04Then we will analyze whether there are any doubts about Judge Freddy Arellana's impartiality in continuing here the case.
05:11Of course, this complicates the legal situation of Mr. Luis Pacheco and Hector Chucklin.
05:18We do not trust a judge who has been accused on multiple occasions.
05:25The criminalization of Indigenous leaders in Guatemala is denounced as arbitrary and racist,
05:30argues this presidential commissioner against discrimination and racism.
05:36It is proof that Indigenous people in this country continues to suffer racism in a crude and harsh way,
05:42and that their human rights are not respected.
05:47In Guatemala, the Public Prosecutor's Office has been criticized for its lack of impartiality,
05:52and for acting in favor of powerful groups imprisoning Indigenous leaders, students,
05:57and defenders who fight in defense of human and collective rights.
06:02In Ecuador, authorities found eight human heads inside sacks in the town of Puerto Bolivar,
06:10in the province of El Oro, amid growing violence in the country.
06:14According to the initial police investigations, the incident would correspond to a clash between organized crime groups
06:22disputing territorial control in the area.
06:26Alongside the remains, the police found pamphlets with a message,
06:31robbing prohibit, presuming it is an intimidatory warning between criminal guns.
06:37The preliminary report details that the victims are men still unidentified.
06:42This incident is part of the serious security crisis that Ecuador is experiencing,
06:49which in 2025 record a historic high with more than 9,200 violent deaths,
06:58an escalation that the government has not been able to stop.
07:07A passenger boat sank in the Amazon River, Brazil, leaving a tragic toll of two people dead and seven missing.
07:17The boat sank shortly after leaving the port, and among the fatalities were a three-year-old girl and a
07:2522-year-old woman.
07:26Firefighters rescued 71 people alive, while authorities continued to investigate the causes of the incident.
07:35A survivor reported that the boat was traveling at high speed,
07:40and that the captain attempted to overtake another boat when a sudden wave flooded the vessel.

10:16system.
10:34We move on to other topics.

11:48approved a plan to advance the country regulation and registration of occupied
11:54lands in the West Bank. The measure taken by the Zionists has alerted the
11:59United Nations as it had not to be implemented since 1977, emphasizing that
12:07this could lead to more forced displacement of the Palestinian
12:11population. According to the plan, the land will be sold or allocated to
12:17Israeli settlers or the army with the goal of colonizing 15 percent of the
12:23territory by 2030. Experts warn that Tel Aviv has ignored all international
12:31warnings about the implementation of these plans, which seek to control the
12:37Palestinian region.
12:44The Palestinian health actors denounces that dozens of health workers have been held in
12:52Israeli prisons since the beginning of the genocidal attacks in 2023. The Director General of Gaza
12:59Hospital Mohammed Saud condemned the illegal arrest carried out within health centers
13:06where their only crime was to remain at their workplace, fulfilling their humanitarian duty.
13:14The health officials urge human rights institution and the international community
13:19to intervene to secure the release of those detained as they are also being subject to pressure and insult.
13:28and some of them are reporting serious injuries. He warned that the arrest of the medical personnel is
13:36exacerbating the health crisis in the territory and therefore demands the release and guaranteed protection

15:40Welcome back.
15:41U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech at the Munich Security Conference that has sparked a wave
15:50of reactions due to his explicit defense of Western colonialism.
15:56Before an audience of European leaders, Rubio pointed to the processes of decolonization after World War II
16:05and the communist revolutions as signs of the weakening of the Western dominant system and invite Europe to join President
16:15Trump's project to restore its influence.
16:19The statesmen quickly generate responses with international analysts interpreting the speech as a declaration of war against multipolarity
16:30and a direct challenge to the principles of sovereign equality among nations.
16:36The standing ovation he received from European representatives has been particularly questioned as many interpret it as a sign of
16:47alignment with a vision that delegitimizes the decolonization processes that transform the political map of the 20th century.
17:05International reactions were not long in coming.
17:09Former Indian Foreign Minister Kawa Siba wrote on his social media accounts,
17:14This is in fact a declaration of war against everything that is not Western.
17:20What Rubio is saying is that the world's most urgent issues will be identified by the United States.
17:28The United States will use its power to deal with them and the results will be determined by the national
17:36interests of the United States.
17:38Very disturbing for the future.
17:44U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen said the standing ovation Rubio received in Munich after declaring the end of the
17:54rules-based order shows how weak many European leaders have become.
18:00Rather than defending universal human rights, they bowed to his siren son of blood and soil.
18:11Along the same lines, Glenn Deason, professor of the economy, states,
18:17Marco Rubio described the decolonization as a sinister communist conspiracy that destroyed 500 years of Western empires.
18:28Rather than adapting to multipolarity, Rubio hints at the restoration of the empire and invites the European vassals of the
18:38United States to join him.
18:40This is interpreted as a declaration of war against multipolarity and sovereign equality.
18:53The United Nations inter-rate food security faced classification warned that over 21 million people in Sudan are facing acute
19:04food insecurity.
19:06According to an organization's report, the figure of those who face acute food insecurity represents 45% of the entire
19:16population.
19:17In this sense, the world food program described the situation as the worst hunger crisis in the world.
19:26In recent years, the crisis in Sudan has worsened due to army conflict, massive displacement and the economic collapse that
19:36is plaguing the population.
19:59Venezuela has begun its carnival celebrations.
20:02During these activities, people showcase their culture and different traditions.
20:07Our correspondent, Brian Meir, will share some more information.
20:13In the little village of El Jarrilio in the mountains of Venezuela, the Skel-MI Social Club is holding its
20:20first carnival ever, drawing on the Bavarian tradition of its first residents who founded the community in 1890.
20:34Our mask is a very mischievous character with a nose that looks like a peach.
20:44Jarrilio has always been a peach producing town.
20:47There was a time when we were the largest peach producer in the country.
20:56When the community announced they would hold carnival parades this year, older carnival groups from Tovar, a nearby town of
21:0322,000 people with its own Bavarian immigrant heritage, decided to help them out by joining their first parade.
21:12«Carnival gives us immense satisfaction.
21:16We are making an allusion to the witches in Germans.
21:19There were several socialыв Fu, there were several groups of them that were dedicated to brewing beer, so we are
21:29alluding to our history.
21:31We are the beer witches.
21:36Both communities maintain ties to Germany, and a carnival club in Forchheim, Bavaria,
21:41provided support for Skel to make their own costumes.
21:45Over the years, the carnival groups in nearby Tovar have been invited to Germany to participate
21:49in their carnivals.
21:52Here in Venezuela, we add colored fringes to our costumes to symbolize our national
21:58flag, yellow, blue, and red.
22:01In Bavaria, their masks have undergone some variations over time, but we still maintain
22:07the original tradition of wooden masks.
22:10They are all made in our town, Tovar.
22:13We are very proud of this.
22:16El Jairilio's first carnival parade ended in front of the local Catholic church, where
22:20the revelers took off their masks, attended mass, then spilled out onto the streets for
22:25a party as busloads of local tourists arrived to join in on the fun.
22:38The carnival is happiness.
22:40As I told the priest in our church, it's always happy.
22:45Like in most countries around the world that celebrate carnival, the carnival in Venezuela
22:50ends on Ash Wednesday.
22:52Brian Meir, Telesur, El Jairilio.
22:57In Brazil, thousands of people flooded the seafront promenade in Rio de Janeiro, one of the city's
23:05main outdoor party venues to celebrate the carnivals.
23:09From the monumental parades in Rio de Janeiro to the popular comparsas in the Northeast, carnival
23:16reaffirms itself as an expression of the country's cultural identity and an economic engine that
23:23mobilized millions of people.
23:25International attention is focused on the zambodromo, where the samba schools will parade for the
23:32three nights.
23:34Local authorities deploy extensive security operations and public services to ensure the
23:40success of a festival that showcases Brazil's cultural wealth to the world.
23:50In Peru, citizens in the District of Sucre celebrate the traditional arrival of the so-called
23:57Ño Carnavalón.
23:59In the neighborhood's Los Mamos, figures between three and four meters stalled satirizing current
24:07public figures and celebrities stalled the show of the parade.
24:13This year, among the most representative sculptures were those of interim President José Jerry and
24:20Presidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele, while illustrious figures such as Edith Luna and
24:28Guillermo Salazar were honored.
24:30At the end of the parade, participants engaged in the Water Game, an activity where they throw
24:37water at each other to eliminate the bad energy and sink the final Carnival sands.
24:49Like this, we have come to the end of this new brief.
