00:10I'm Jean Johansson and over the last 15 years I've been buying, selling and renovating properties both in the UK and overseas.
00:19Today I'm going to be using all my skills to find the perfect place for Sue and Brian who remain cool despite the heat.
00:26I am really getting lukewarm from you two, talk to me what's going on.
00:30And I need to up my game.
00:32What are you thinking Brian?
00:33It's not doing it for me, it seems a little bit too small for what we want.
00:38I visit a luxury villa where it's all about alfresco chilling.
00:42This outside space has really got everything, a great pool, sun loungers, barbecue, it's beautiful.
00:49It is.
00:50But at the end of the day do I find my house hunters their perfect place in the sun?
00:55It's fabulous.

01:00Sue and Brian first discovered this village around 20 years ago when Sue's sister already had a holiday home here.
01:08And they loved it so much they've been coming back at least once a year, every year.
01:13Now that they've downsized in the UK and they're both headed for retirement, Sue and Brian can't wait to find their very own holiday home where they can spend loads of time with family and friends.
01:23Sue and Brian who live in Greater Manchester have been together for more than 50 years after he impressed her with his fashion sense.
01:31We met round about 1969 at a youth club that shed this long black hair down to her waist.
01:38I was in a white denim jacket which was picked up by the fluorescent lights.
01:43Obviously Sue noticed me.
01:45Well he was very attractive.
01:47He had very long dark hair which was the fashion at the time.
01:52We've been together ever since.
01:54We got married in 1972.
01:56They have a budget of £180,000 to buy a holiday home in La Cala de Mijas to enjoy with their two daughters and four grandchildren.
02:08The best way to get to La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain is to fly into Malaga which takes about three hours from loads of UK airports.
02:17Then it's less than half an hour's drive.
02:19La Cala de Mijas which was a quiet fishing village until the Spanish tourist boom of the 1960s is seen as one of the gems of the Costa del Sol.
02:28Less lively than some neighbouring resorts, it's home to a lovely sandy beach and oodles of great shops, bars and restaurants and retains its traditional Andalusian appeal despite its growth and popularity over the years.
02:41It's also home to a large British community with a mixture of full time residents and holiday home owners.
02:48Not as built up, La Cala de Mijas has a real Spanish charm compared to some of its neighbouring towns and villages and it's the most expensive area between Malaga and Marbella.
02:58Here a two bedroom apartment with outside space, a short walk to the beach starts at around £220,000.
03:05But if Sue and Brian are willing to go a little bit further afield, I'm confident I can get them some good dates.
03:11Before we get going, I'm meeting up with my house hunters on the town's main beach to find out more about them and what they're after in terms of property.

03:25How does it feel to be here?
03:26Brilliant.

03:28Absolutely. Love this area.
03:29Can you kind of put it into words, what is it that keeps you getting on that flight from Manchester and coming back here for 20 years?
03:36Obviously we love the beach, we love the boardwalk, we love the people here, they're so friendly and pleasant.
03:43That's great, I mean you've been coming for 20 years, so what has made you two finally do it?
03:48I think just at the time in our life, I mean, you know when our children were younger and we had grandchildren that were young and needed us and we both have worked, you know, a long time.
03:58And we sort of feel now is the time to take some time out for ourselves.
04:02Of course.
04:03So let's talk about your wish list then, what's this dream property that you want?
04:06We just like a two to three bedroom, a little house or an apartment or even if there was just one bedroom where we've got some space in the lounge to put a sofa bed if there are visitors.
04:18OK.
04:19Hopefully with a bit of outside space.
04:21If we could get a sea view that would be fantastic and within a 30 minute walk to the beach that would be great.
04:28Are you up for doing a little bit of work in the property?
04:31Yes, we don't mind.
04:32If the price is right and we've got some money over, I don't want to knock walls down.
04:38But I don't mind painting, maybe a new kitchen in.
04:41OK.
04:42I'll keep that in mind in this search and I know that you've got £180,000 in cash.

04:54It's going to be a challenge to get you everything you want for £200,000 but I will really try with a few compromises here and there to get you what you're after.

05:15And if Brian and Sue are true to their word, I've got no doubt I can find them somewhere they'll love for that maximum budget of £200,000.
05:23Before we visit property number one, we're making the short journey from the beach into the heart of town.
05:30So, before we go to our first property, of course, I had to stop off at the old town square here in La Cala de Mijas.
05:36I'm guessing you two know this area.

05:40We always come here.
05:41Normally, when we're meeting our friends, we meet them in this little place behind us.

06:05These kind of towers date back to the late 1700s and you see them dotted along the Costa del Sol.

06:18It'd take you about 20 minutes to get there on the bus.

06:28Property number one is in a place called Calla Honda, just down the coast from La Calla de Mijas.
06:33It's a very international area, popular with buyers from the UK, Scandinavia and more recently from the USA.
06:40Prices have fallen a bit in the past year, but even so I've had to dip into Sue and Brian's wiggle room here.
06:46Though there's flexibility on the price.

06:50I've got a third floor, one bedroom, one bathroom apartment for you.

07:00The gardens are really nicely kept and another reason I've brought you here is the price.
07:05So this property is on the market for just over £181,000, but the agent has said that the owners are willing to listen to offers around £168,000.

09:24And it's always useful to understand what your house hunters don't like as well as what
09:29they do.
09:30So I'm not feeling too downhearted.
09:32Now this part of the Costa del Sol is known for the boardwalk that runs along the coast.
09:36So before we take a look at property number two, I thought we'd take a bit of a stroll.

09:50We walked from the hotel along the boardwalk to La Calla.

10:16And you know, the scenery, you know, all the way, you've got this beautiful coastline and
10:21it's fabulous.
10:22And for my next property, you can access the boardwalk in about 15 minutes.

10:51Today, I'm in and around the beautiful fishing village of La Cala de Mijas in southern Spain,
10:56helping Sue and Brian find the perfect holiday home where they can relax and spend time with

11:01Now, I haven't got off to the best start, but I've got four more chances to impress them.
11:06The first place I showed my house hunters, who have a maximum budget of £200,000,
11:11didn't really do the job because even though they loved its big balcony, they felt the inside
11:16was a bit small, especially if their family was over to stay.
11:19So, I found them a place with much more space for property number two.
11:24It's in an area called Riviera del Sol, which is slightly further inland than our last property.
11:30Once again, it's an area popular with international buyers.
11:34And even though prices haven't moved much here in the last couple of years,
11:37to get a roomier option for Brian and Sue, I've had to get close to the top end of their maximum budget.
11:44Really wanted to improve on the previous property.
11:47So, I have a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, top-floor apartment right there.
11:53That's good.
11:54Excellent. The building looks well looked after.
11:56Right, let's talk numbers.
11:58This property is on the market for just under £194,000.
12:02The agent tells me that could be negotiated down to around £175,000.
12:07Wow.
12:08Yes, I said the same.
12:10This area, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, close to the beach.
12:14£175,000 is sounding pretty good.

12:19This is the three storeys.
12:20Typically, in Spain, if it's three storeys, there's no lift.

13:06Inside, there's a large light and bright living and dining room, a separate modern kitchen
13:11with adjoining utility room, the main bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, a second bedroom
13:18with a Juliet balcony, plus a shower room.
13:23Much bigger kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms of this living area and another great view.

14:21The only thing I'm sort of worried about is Sue, she's not really good downstairs.

15:32for a negotiable just under £194,000, it went down pretty well all in all.
15:38But will those stairs mean Sue and Brian are stepping up or stepping away?
15:43So you had a good look round on your own, you two?
15:47Yes, we did.
15:48What do you think of the property?
15:50We like it.
15:51We like the lounge and the bedrooms are fine.
15:54Two bathrooms is good.
15:55It's a plus.
15:56A little bit concerned about the stairs because there isn't a lift.
16:00The balcony is a little bit smaller than we would have liked, but the views are fantastic.
16:07So, yeah, we are considering it.

17:04Well, we chose Mijas because, you know, Benel and Fungarola and Marbella on the other side, all a bit busy.
17:11We like it here, it's quiet.
17:12There are bars and everything, but there's no kind of full-on nightclubs or anything, so it suits us on a lifestyle.
17:19It's easy enough to meet people, I thought.

17:22You just said when you're here more and more, you realise how many English people there are to kind of befriend.

17:29What about, you know, the whole process of actually buy-in and the solicitors and all the legal bits?

17:36Yeah, fairly.
17:37I think as long as you do a bit of research, the process was no more stressful than at home in the UK, so fairly straightforward.

18:08Today I'm helping Sue and Brian find their perfect holiday home around the beautiful Costa del Sol in Spain.
18:14And so far, it's been a bit of an uphill battle.
18:17My house hunters, who have a maximum budget of £200,000, weren't keen on my first place as they felt it was too small.
18:25And even though they didn't rule out my second one, the three flights of stairs leading up to it were a bit of a concern.
18:31So I'm going for somewhere that's a bit easier to access with property number three.
18:37We're staying in the same area, Riviera del Sol, as Brian and Sue liked it so much.
18:42But this time we're even closer to the beach, less than a ten-minute walk in fact.
18:46And there's another bonus in terms of price, as this place comes in a little bit below budget.
18:53I love this location, but what do you think about this neighbourhood?
18:56It's lovely.

24:28where we saw our previous two properties,
24:30but this one's really close to the beach,
24:32in an urbanisation where around 80% of residents
24:36are from the UK.
24:37For the first time on this search,
24:39we're seeing a townhouse rather than an apartment,
24:42so I've had to go a bit over Sue and Brian's maximum budget,
24:45but I'm told there is room for manoeuvre.
24:48You really like the location of my previous property,
24:51so I've kept you in the area.

24:55It's fabulous.

27:46like so i'm interested to hear where they're at now that they've had a good look around so what's the

28:01is that there's a motorway and it's noisy out outside and that's a big consideration for us
28:09we're so close to the beach here and you know that's the underpass to the beach

29:49helping sue and brian find the perfect holiday home that can work for the whole family and my house
29:54hunters who have a maximum budget of 200 000 pounds currently have three properties in the mix this top
30:01floor apartment this traditional andalusian style apartment and this townhouse with a big garden though
30:08none of them feel quite like the one for brian and sue so i'm hoping my fifth and final property will seal
30:14the deal but before we go there i'm heading just outside the town of mijas pueblo to check out this
30:23stunning five-bedroom three-bathroom villa set in a third of an acre of land priced at a touch over
30:30eight hundred thousand pounds i'm meeting the agent for a tour hi iris nice to see you oh wow i mean
30:37look at this it's beautiful it is this outside space has really got everything a great pool sun loungers
30:45barbecue exactly it's surrounded by garden it has a big terrace absolutely stunning i can't wait to get
30:51inside shall we let's go oh iris this is a great room nice and long i like the flowing here very nice
31:00yes they created it to have an open space connected with the living room and the terrace so it gives a
31:08bit of an open feeling and i love the floor is this marble it is marble yes just a perfect size for a
31:16main bedroom and i love they've kept the theme of the arches the andalusian arch going through it's very
31:21nice this is the main bedroom it has a walk-in wardrobe and a jack and jill ensuite bathroom oh

31:45day you can see morocco and it's private it is it's very private uh that's what what the owners wanted
31:51as well to have a private space yeah not overlooked by anybody this property has absolutely everything

32:24before i reveal my final option i wanted to end on one of calahonda's many beautiful beaches
32:31i like this one because it's nice and chill but yeah you've got a restaurant bar down here
32:36and it's just generally not as busy are you fans of the beach do you go a lot when you visit me has
32:41yes we like the beach we like to people watch um sometimes we like to go into the sea um yeah and we
32:49like a good walk along the beach and the boardwalk you've been visiting this area for over 20 years
32:55then how does it feel to be searching for your own place now to finally be doing it it it feels fabulous
33:01it's it feels sort of like a dream come true that we're actually doing it now yeah dream feel a bit
33:07closer brian yeah i mean it was lovely to have a place here and for our children to come over and our
33:15grandchildren uh did absolutely love it you know are you ready to see the final one we are yes it's
33:22about a 10 minute walk from this lovely beach oh come on let's roll all
33:28that short stroll takes us to property number five and my last chance to impress brian and sue
33:33i've really pushed the boat out here with what i think is a cracking property but to do that i've had
33:39to go quite a bit over budget however the agent has said that the vendors are keen to sell and are
33:45very open to offers i think i've pulled everything together for this final property you got two pools
33:51here beautiful gardens 66 properties all lovely and whitewashed you've got gated area for your parking

35:09stairway that brings you up to your kitchen dining living and another good outside space this is a
35:16nice size it's a lovely shaped room that's great and brian how does this size work for you i think

35:27this is a nice room yeah it's good size nice and bright nice view of the pool and you can see
35:37the sea through the trees yeah it's good and you get outside space off your bedroom i mean what a treat

36:59double i don't know i suppose you could always put a sofa bed in yeah that could work yep well i was
37:06hoping to end this house hunt on a high note and i think i've done that with this duplex apartment
37:11which is on the market for a negotiable just over 214 and a half thousand pounds brian and sue seem
37:18really keen on it both inside and out so fingers crossed come on out and tell me how did that go
37:26having a good look around yeah really good we enjoyed it um we think the property is very nice
37:33and we do like it so yeah i think we've got a contender oh yes i've got a contender yeah happy to hear
37:42that do you feel the same brian well i do yeah but for me i did like property four as well so i think
37:49it's going to be a little bit of a battle that's okay it's a good battle i'll look forward to seeing
37:54which one wins there are some other properties that you were thinking about the one with three
37:58flights of stairs two bed two baths is that still in the running you were concerned about the stairs
38:05no i think the stairs was a bit of a deal breaker for us then there was the two bedroom one bathroom
38:11sort of traditional andalusian you called it is that still in the running i don't think so why not
38:17um i think uh you've upped the game now and i think the the last two are the best two you've
38:24saved the best till last i wouldn't like to be in your position they're two great properties
