00:00Tonight, on MonsterQuest, our homes are meant to be a sanctuary, a safe place where nothing
00:13can harm us. But sometimes, that sense of safety, we've seen this black, hairy figure,
00:20nine or ten feet tall, is shattered by something sinister.
00:25George is terrified to see a horned figure's head in the fire.
00:31It turned its head and looked at me. I have never been so afraid in my entire life.
00:41For many centuries, people have reported strange and sometimes terrifying encounters with what
00:48they describe as monsters.
00:50Its eyes just lit up in the moon and we're like, that is nothing I've ever seen.
00:57If I try to run, I'd be dead.
01:00Now, for the first time, some are sharing their experiences. Is there a pattern to their encounters?
01:07It was just terrifying.
01:11And if so, what could it mean?
01:13Columbus is Ohio's largest and fastest growing city.
01:24But outside the city limits, the concrete gives way to thick woods, territory said to be home
01:31to a towering creature known as the grass man.
01:35This rural area's woodlands and forests are just the kind of places where an undiscovered creature might still exist.
01:45The grass man gets its name from the large dens it allegedly makes out of grass and sticks.
01:52The creature has been described as standing between 7 and 10 feet tall and weighing as much as 300 to 1,000 pounds
02:03and having this long black hair.
02:06Many people believe the grass man is this subspecies of the Bigfoot family in Ohio.
02:15Reports of the grass man date back as far as the 19th century.
02:19One of the first accounts describing the grass man is from an Ohio newspaper from July 22, 1869.
02:27In that report, the creature is described as an aggressive wild man that's gigantic in height
02:32and which allegedly had attacked a man and his daughter days before.
02:37There have been over 300 reported sightings of the grass man in Ohio since the 1970s alone.
02:44Despite the extensive history and volume of sightings, many still question the grass man's existence.
02:55But in 2017, near the Columbus suburb of Galena, one resident reports an encounter that is uncomfortably close to home.
03:05This incident happened in 2017.
03:08I've lived in this area my entire life.
03:12I bought a house.
03:13It backed up to a private 65-acre reserve called Spruce Run.
03:20I used the woods for hiking.
03:22Wildlife and nature is kind of my church.
03:25I had a Doberman named Dozer, which was my best friend.
03:29And our routine was I would get home, and there he'd be waiting for me, and we'd go do our hike.
03:38But this particular day was anything but routine.
03:43I got home late from work.
03:45I want to say it was 5 or 6 o'clock.
03:48Dozer had had surgery about a week prior to that, so he hadn't been able to hike with me.
03:53And he was starting to recover, and I got home, and he's there, his tail's wagging.
04:00He stared at me.
04:02So I'm like, all right, let's go for a hike.
04:06At that time, it was like dusk.
04:08We had at least a good hour.
04:10So I'm like, we'll do a short little hike, and then we'll get back before dark.
04:14No big deal.
04:15We hike out through my property, and it dead ends into Spruce Creek.
04:24And I just start my normal routine.
04:28Michael says he's only 10 minutes into his hike, when suddenly everything changes.
04:38I'm hiking with Dozer, and we're just having a good time.
04:43And I just happen to look up, and there's a little clearing on this ridge, and I see this thing come out.
04:54It was hairy.
04:56It was so black, and it's like doing a belly crawl.
05:02It was parallel to the ground, perfectly level.
05:06It melted my mind.
05:08It's like nothing that I know on earth moves like this thing.
05:10I'm like, it's not a coyote.
05:13It's definitely not a bear.
05:14I'm going through my mind, all these things.
05:17What am I seeing?
05:18What am I looking at?
05:21So I'm just watching this thing, and all of a sudden it turns and just stares right at me.
05:26And then in one leap, it kind of does like this Superman, and it jumps down from the top of the ridge into this bush.
05:3820, 30 yards in one leap.
05:42My body gives him the shock.
05:44It was, at that point, maybe 20 feet from me.
05:47It was right behind this bush.
05:49I'm like, just trying to think, what did I just see here?
05:53So I start walking towards it.
05:56I think I was just bewildered, and I just naturally started walking around just so I could see, maybe get a better look at what I was dealing with.
06:03I take maybe 10 steps towards this, and this rock about the size of a grapefruit hits the creek right beside me.
06:16That kind of just stopped me in my tracks, because I know there's something behind that bush.
06:21And now I know something from somewhere else just threw a rock that landed right beside me.
06:26And as I turn around, that's when everything erupted around me.
06:32On my left side, I see this large limb come this way.
06:37Land.
06:38And then by the time I register that, here comes another limb on this side.
06:44And then it's like something's in the treetops shaking the trees, because the leaves are falling.
06:50And it's just a whirlwind of commotion.
06:54So I'm believing at this time that I'm being surrounded.
07:03I felt defeated at that point.
07:05Felt like I'd walked into a trap, and now I was in their world.
07:10And I felt like I'm not getting out of this.
07:18I'm panicked at this point.
07:20So I grabbed Dozer, I grabbed him real tight, and we start walking right through the middle of the creek.
07:29I just concentrated, and I just walked.
07:33Reaching the safety of his home, Michael allows himself to believe the ordeal is behind him.
07:40I finally got home, and it was like, okay, now I can breathe.
07:45This house, it had a two-story deck.
07:48And right off the bedroom was part of this deck.
07:53My mind's still going a mile, a million miles an hour.
07:55So I just went out on the deck and, you know, kind of take a big, deep breath.
08:02But as soon as I went out there, I hear something in my backyard.
08:10It knocks over my pool furniture.
08:12I literally jump back into my bedroom like a kid, scared.
08:17I've got some cameras right there.
08:21So I grabbed one, and I turned it on.
08:26Little light you're seeing is the moon.
08:29I'm standing there panning the woods.
08:32I'm on the second story of the deck, and it hits right underneath me.
08:37I can feel it.
08:39Hey!
08:40And it sounds like a gunshot.
08:42I get back in my bedroom.
08:44I shut the door.
08:48And I was in my bedroom, and I was kind of leaning, leaning on my bed, just staring at that door.
08:56I'm thinking to myself, any minute, this thing's going to come through that door.
08:59We're all going to die.
09:01With no escape possible, Michael remains trapped in his home for the rest of the night.
09:07The next day, I get up, and the first thing, I kind of look outside, slowly open the door.
09:16My pool furniture was knocked over.
09:18My chain-link fence.
09:22The entire top rail of it is bowed in like a smiley face, and this is thick steel.
09:27I looked underneath my deck, and I can see in the mulch bed, large impressions, like 15-inch impressions.
09:38It was footprints.
09:40I had a handprint about like this on the back of my deck.
09:45So I'm just piecing everything together and looking around like, like, wow.
09:50In the months after his experience, Michael continues to investigate the area with a friend,
10:00and even captures this thermal image of what he believes to be the same creature.
10:08This changed the way I feel about the woods.
10:13Nature is still my church.
10:16I just know that sometimes bad things can happen, even at church.
10:32Spotsville, Kentucky.
10:35For more than 100 years, residents here reported something strange stalking their farmland and woods.
10:42A creature known as the Spotsville Monster.
10:46Described as large, upright, and hairy,
10:53the monster has been blamed by this agricultural community for the disappearance of valuable livestock over the years.
11:02Sightings would come and go.
11:04But in 1975, a major report would once again put the residents of Spotsville on edge.
11:10The Owensboro Messenger Enquirer reports on new evidence of the creature when a local firefighter, Ray Vibbert,
11:18describes having a terrifying encounter.
11:21Ray was squirrel hunting when he saw a huge, hairy creature,
11:24and even made a plaster casting of a footprint that he found,
11:27which he gave to local law enforcement and said was too large to have just been a bear.
11:31The police even stake out the field looking for the monster.
11:34But whatever it was, it never came back.
11:38Months after Ray's encounter, Barton Nunnally's family moves in next door.
11:43They soon have a story of their own to tell.
11:46It was early winter of 1975.
11:52My family moved to a little isolated farmhouse on the banks of the Green River.
11:59We were always outdoor people, and it seemed like a perfect location.
12:03The family settles into their new home.
12:09But as the months pass, unsettling signs begin to surface.
12:14Springtime came.
12:16Our chickens started disappearing.
12:18That was the first little bit of concern that my dad felt about that place.
12:24We'd hear strange noises out off in the fields at night.
12:27And we started finding dead dogs.
12:30I remember the first day my brother and I found one.
12:35It was laying in one of our fields.
12:37It had been cut from its neck all the way down to between its hind legs.
12:45It's so strange.
12:48We had a goat.
12:50We chained it right outside our bedroom window.
12:53I remember hearing that goat bleak.
12:56Bye, bye.
13:00But it would be getting further and further away in the distance until I couldn't hear it anymore.
13:07The next day we got up, and the chain had been broken.
13:13And the goat was gone.
13:15The Nunnalies believe it to be the first of many farm animals they would lose to the Spotsville monster.
13:22He ended up killing over 250 chickens.
13:26He killed our pony and eight or nine dead dogs.
13:29We found a dead pig.
13:30It was mutilated.
13:32It was just kind of crazy.
13:36So we got scared for our safety.
13:39Following countless attacks, Barton Nunnally says the culprit finally reveals itself.
13:47First time I saw the creature was when we were standing on the porch waiting for the school bus.
13:55Looking down the road, we've seen this black, hairy figure.
13:59It had to be at least nine or ten feet tall.
14:04It had thin, gray, tinged hair.
14:09We all screamed and ran into the kitchen.
14:15It really sunk in.
14:16Just what kind of situation we were in.
14:19It felt really, really scary.
14:20Despite their fears, the Nunnalies don't run.
14:26They dig in.
14:28Barton's father installs an overhead light in the front yard, hoping to keep the creature from the house.
14:35We were always looking for evidence of that creature.
14:38I found two different trackways.
14:41One was coming up from the Ohio River toward our house,
14:44and one was coming across a muddy field at an angle toward our house.
14:48They'd be screaming out in the fields at night,
14:52and they would come up and turn our door handles.
14:56My dad was really, really protective of his kids,
14:59and he really started to fear for our safety.
15:03After weeks of terror, the family decides to take a stand.
15:08Older brother Harold had the idea to get a bunch of friends up on the roof
15:12and kill this thing once and for all.
15:14So he gathered up my cousin,
15:19here for my dad's friends,
15:21and they got up on the roof,
15:22and they were going to end the Spotsville monster.
15:26As night falls over Spotsville,
15:28the group takes their positions,
15:31determined to end whatever's been stalking their property once and for all.
15:36They heard it growl.
15:40They said that thing sounded like it could have reached onto the roof
15:44and grabbed either one of them.
15:46That's how big this thing sounded.
15:49They started opening fire,
15:51and it sounded like World War II up there.
15:54They had rifles,
15:57they had shotguns with deer slugs,
15:59they had pistols
16:00that they unloaded onto this area where this thing was standing.
16:05They were all scared to death.
16:08They said,
16:08well, I think we got it
16:09because we lit those woods up.
16:13By morning,
16:15the men go looking for the beast
16:17they are sure they killed.
16:19We went out and looked,
16:21and we could see where the bullets
16:22were ripped through the vegetation.
16:24There was no blood,
16:26no hair.
16:28Should have been there dead.
16:30If it was a natural flesh and blood animal like a bear,
16:33it would have been laying there.
16:35There was no sign of the creature.
16:37Barton says the encounter
16:39becomes the family's breaking point.
16:41Mom had pretty much had it.
16:43It almost felt like we were captives in our own home.
16:46That ended up running us off of the property,
16:50if not for all the creature activity,
16:53and we would probably be living there right now.
16:58Barton Nunnally's family
16:59managed to escape their Kentucky home,
17:02and whatever was encroaching on it.
17:05Around the same time,
17:07in New York,
17:08a family will find
17:09there's no escape
17:10from the darkness within their walls.
17:12Just over 30 miles from New York City
17:17lies Amityville,
17:19a quiet village on Long Island's southern shore.
17:24It's known for its waterfront views,
17:26small-town charm,
17:28and a home forever linked
17:30to a series of disturbing events.
17:32The first,
17:36in 1974,
17:38is a gruesome domestic massacre
17:40that destroys the town's sense of serenity,
17:43makes national headlines,
17:45and inspires one of the most notorious
17:48horror movies of all time,
17:50the Amityville Horror.
17:52On the night of November 13th,
17:561974,
17:57in Amityville,
17:5824-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr.
18:01shoots and kills his entire family
18:03as they lie sleeping in their beds.
18:07Since he was the only one
18:09who found his family
18:10and the only surviving family member,
18:12he was brought down to the station
18:14for questioning.
18:15And within 24 hours,
18:17he confesses to the murders,
18:19saying,
18:19and I quote,
18:19it just started.
18:21It went so fast,
18:22I couldn't stop.
18:26He later recants his confession
18:28and pleads not guilty
18:30by reason of insanity,
18:32saying at trial
18:33that voices inside the house
18:35made him do it.
18:37But the judge and jury
18:38do not believe him
18:39and sentence him
18:40to six consecutive life sentences.
18:42In 1974,
18:50a house in Amityville, New York
18:52becomes a scene
18:53of domestic horror
18:54when a man murders his family.
18:58But for the family
18:59that moves in next,
19:01the true horror
19:02is still to come.
19:05In 1975,
19:07George and Kathy Lutz
19:08and their three kids
19:09see this home
19:10as a potential dream
19:11come true for them.
19:15George and Kathy
19:16say they were aware
19:18of the murders
19:19that had occurred
19:20in the home
19:20just one year prior.
19:21But neither of them
19:22had any reservations
19:23about buying the house.
19:26They don't own
19:28enough furniture,
19:29so they end up
19:29paying $400
19:30to keep some
19:31of the DeFeo's
19:32family's furnishings
19:33in the home.
19:35The dining room set,
19:37the master bedroom set,
19:38even the daughter's
19:41bedroom set.
19:42They have no belief
19:44in anything superstitious
19:45or paranormal.
19:47Though the Lutz's
19:48don't believe
19:49in the supernatural,
19:50Kathy is religious,
19:52so she invites
19:53a Catholic priest
19:54to bless the house.
19:56The priest begins
19:57on the first floor
19:58and makes his way
19:58up to the third floor,
20:00sprinkling holy water
20:01and saying a prayer
20:02as he goes.
20:04But when he gets
20:05to the third floor,
20:06he claims to distinctly
20:08hear a male voice
20:10say,
20:10get out.
20:14The priest is terrified,
20:15but he doesn't tell
20:16the Lutz family
20:17what he heard
20:18because he's still
20:18struggling to try
20:19and understand himself.
20:22Over the next few weeks,
20:24the family claims
20:26more unexplained events
20:27occur inside the home
20:29and always at the same
20:31time of night.
20:32George says he wakes up
20:35at 3.15 a.m.
20:36because he hears
20:37a weird knocking sound.
20:39He gets out of bed
20:41and goes over the window
20:42where he sees a shadow
20:44moving near the boathouse.
20:47He's scared,
20:48but he gets dressed anyway
20:50and heads outside.
20:53As he walks toward the dock,
20:54he claims that the door
20:56to the boathouse
20:57has been torn from its hinges
20:58and is knocking
20:59in the wind.
21:01George is obviously confused.
21:03He wonders,
21:04how did this all happen?
21:05He checks the surrounding area
21:07but doesn't see
21:08any sign of an intruder.
21:11One night,
21:12George wakes up
21:12at 3.15 again
21:14to the same knocking sound.
21:15He goes over to the window
21:18and can see
21:19that the boathouse door
21:21once again
21:22is knocking
21:22against the building.
21:26George is furious.
21:27He runs outside
21:28and prompts the door
21:29back into place.
21:31But when he turns
21:33back around,
21:33he sees something
21:35really frightening.
21:39He claims
21:40two red eyes
21:43are shining
21:44out of the window
21:45of his daughter's room.
21:48George runs
21:49straight up
21:50to Missy's room.
21:52But when he opens
21:53her door,
21:54she's sound asleep
21:55and no one else
21:57is in the room.
21:59The next day,
22:01George visits
22:02the local newspaper's office
22:03to search for information
22:06about the DeFeo murders
22:08that happened
22:09in his home.
22:11He's looking
22:11for any kind
22:13of connection
22:14to what they've
22:15been experiencing
22:15and finds out
22:16that the murders
22:17took place
22:18in the house
22:18at 3.15 a.m.
22:22Kathy also reports
22:23wondering
22:23if their home
22:24is haunted,
22:25but neither of them
22:26is really willing
22:27to fully accept
22:28this idea.
22:31One night
22:32during the week
22:32of Christmas,
22:34George and Kathy
22:34start a fire
22:35in the fireplace.
22:37All of a sudden,
22:38Kathy starts screaming.
22:40She's pointing
22:43towards the fire
22:43and when George
22:44looks over
22:45at the flames,
22:46he's terrified
22:46to see a horned
22:47figure's head
22:48in the fire.
22:51They both claim
22:52it looks like
22:53the devil.
23:00George grabs Kathy
23:01and pulls her
23:02away from the room.
23:03When he goes back
23:04to see the fire,
23:05the face is gone.
23:06This and all
23:11of the other
23:11unexplained incidents
23:13in the house
23:13have now convinced
23:15them their home
23:16is haunted.
23:18Roughly two weeks
23:19after their alleged
23:20fireplace vision,
23:22their haunting
23:22takes a darker turn.
23:27By this point,
23:29the family
23:29is sleeping together
23:30in the same bedroom.
23:32The kids are in the bed
23:33and the parents
23:34are sleeping on chairs.
23:35George wakes up
23:37and his son
23:39is standing
23:39next to the bed
23:40crying.
23:41The boy tells them
23:43that there is
23:43a monster in the house
23:44and that that monster
23:45tried to grab him.
23:50Suddenly,
23:51George claims
23:51he hears the family
23:52dog barking
23:53from the hallway.
23:56He runs out
23:57and that's when
23:58he sees it.
23:59a giant white-hooded
24:02figure
24:03with the same
24:04devil face
24:05he saw
24:05in the fire.
24:09This figure
24:10is apparently
24:11standing on the staircase
24:12staring at them.
24:15George screams
24:16to Kathy
24:17to grab the boys
24:18and get out
24:19of the house
24:19while he picks up
24:20his daughter.
24:23They run down
24:24the main staircase
24:24just in time
24:25to see the front door
24:26completely ripped
24:27from its hinges.
24:29They just get
24:30out of the house.
24:34They leave
24:35everything behind.
24:38The Lutzes
24:39flee for their lives
24:40and from whatever
24:41evil remained
24:42from the murders
24:44that occurred
24:44inside that house.
24:46in the days
24:48before Ronald
24:49DeFeo Jr.'s
24:50death in prison
24:50he claims
24:52he didn't murder
24:52his family
24:53by himself.
24:54He had help.
24:56Some investigators
24:57have even said
24:58that the brutal murders
25:00couldn't have been
25:01pulled off
25:01by one person.
25:08Fauke, Arkansas.
25:10A quiet rural town
25:12in the southwest
25:13corner of the state
25:14surrounded by marshlands
25:16and dense forest.
25:19It's not the kind
25:20of place
25:21that typically
25:22commands attention.
25:25But on the night
25:26of May 2nd, 1971
25:28one couple's encounter
25:30with a massive
25:31hair-covered beast
25:33would thrust the community
25:36into the national spotlight.
25:39Bobby and Elizabeth Ford
25:41were just normal
25:42newlyweds moving
25:43into their new home
25:45and found.
25:46One night
25:46something big
25:48and hairy
25:48came right up
25:49to the front door.
25:52It reached in
25:53through their screen
25:54and Bobby
25:55grabbed his gun
25:56and fired.
25:59The Ford's encounter
26:00ignited widespread
26:01media attention.
26:03It inspired
26:03the creature's name
26:04and forever
26:05etched the tiny town
26:06of Fauke, Arkansas
26:07into American folklore.
26:09Reported encounters
26:11with this creature
26:12started popping up
26:13across the Midwest
26:14in Illinois,
26:16in Indiana.
26:17There were theories
26:18that the creature
26:19was following
26:19the rivers
26:20and forests
26:21that connect
26:21the deep south
26:22to the Midwest
26:23just like other
26:24migrating animals do.
26:28Skeptics
26:29expressed doubt
26:30that whatever lurked
26:31in Fauke
26:32would travel
26:32that far and wide.
26:34But two years
26:36after the Ford's
26:37encounter,
26:38Joni Mahan,
26:39hundreds of miles
26:40away in southern
26:41Indiana,
26:42believes she came
26:43across the same
26:44creature.
26:46I grew up
26:46in southern Indiana
26:48in a very rural
26:49area.
26:51And my father
26:52had about 40 acres
26:53of land
26:54and he built
26:54his own house.
26:56There wasn't
26:57a town surrounding
26:58us.
26:59There weren't
26:59any children
27:00to play with.
27:01We were so isolated.
27:02There was nothing
27:03but woods.
27:04I just had to
27:05keep myself occupied
27:06most of the time
27:07and I did so
27:08by going out
27:08into the woods.
27:09It was a magical
27:10place for me.
27:14But I was really
27:16drawn to a section
27:17of woods
27:18behind my father's
27:19house.
27:20A lot of tall
27:21old growth trees
27:22and a nice canopy
27:24overhead and the birds
27:26were always singing.
27:27And I went down
27:29there all the time.
27:30Every chance I got,
27:31I grabbed my dog
27:33and off into the woods
27:34we went.
27:36There was an old
27:36hollow tree.
27:38I think it got hit
27:39by lightning back
27:40in the day.
27:42It made a perfect
27:43fort for me.
27:45My dog Sassy and I
27:46would go down there
27:47and hang out.
27:51But on that
27:53particular day,
27:54birds were chirping
27:55and the skies were blue
27:56and the temperatures
27:57were warm.
27:59It was definitely
28:01a place of safety
28:02and comfort.
28:03There were a lot
28:04of dried leaves
28:05on the ground.
28:07I immediately
28:08took my shoes off
28:09because I wanted
28:09to feel the bare ground
28:11under my feet.
28:13I was carving my initials
28:14into the inside
28:15of the tree
28:16because I kind of
28:17wanted that to always
28:18be my tree.
28:19when all of a sudden
28:21I heard leaves crunching.
28:26We were so far out
28:27in the middle of nowhere,
28:28nobody should have
28:29been out there.
28:31I stopped and listened
28:33because I wasn't sure
28:34what I was hearing.
28:37Everything was just
28:38dead still.
28:39Like there was
28:40something there,
28:41something was wrong,
28:42something was watching me.
28:44I walked over
28:48to the edge
28:48of the hill
28:49because I wanted
28:50to see where
28:51this sound
28:52was coming from.
28:54And I could see
28:55something moving
28:56through the bramble.
28:59It was kind of
29:00that reddish brown color
29:01and I could catch
29:02glimpses of it
29:03as it moved through.
29:06And I was terrified.
29:09This wasn't human.
29:10It was about
29:13seven feet tall.
29:15It was very thin
29:16and the hair
29:17and the fur
29:17was very tangled
29:19and matted.
29:20It looked very unhealthy.
29:23As it stepped out
29:24from behind the bramble,
29:26it was hopping sideways,
29:27almost like an ape.
29:29And then it came
29:30all the way out
29:31into the open
29:32and it stopped.
29:34It turned its head
29:35and looked at me
29:36and locked eyes with me.
29:38I have never been
29:41so afraid
29:42in my entire life.
29:44And then all of a sudden
29:45Sassy noticed
29:46and she started barking.
29:51I didn't know
29:52what this thing
29:52was going to do.
29:55I got about
29:56a three to four second
29:57look at it
29:57before my paralysis broke.
30:00I just needed
30:01to get out of there.
30:03I grabbed Sassy
30:04by the collar
30:05and we went running
30:06all the way
30:06through the woods.
30:08In southern Indiana,
30:16young Joni Mahan
30:18and her dog
30:18are running
30:19for their lives.
30:22Pursued
30:22by a sinister creature
30:24she believes
30:25is the legendary
30:26Falk monster.
30:29This wasn't human.
30:30I just needed
30:31to get out of there.
30:32I came bursting in
30:37through the door.
30:39My mother was
30:39in the kitchen
30:40and I was frantic
30:41to tell her
30:41what I'd just seen
30:42and she really
30:44didn't believe me.
30:46My mother
30:47was more concerned
30:48about the fact
30:49that I was barefoot.
30:51She wanted me
30:52to go back
30:53into the woods
30:53to get my shoes
30:54which was terrifying
30:55for me.
30:56But it's starting
30:58to get dark
30:59and that thing
30:59might still be there.
31:00It might be waiting.
31:01It might be sitting
31:02there holding my shoes
31:03but I needed them
31:04for school
31:05and I was
31:06a fairly obedient child.
31:08Joni is able
31:09to convince her mother
31:10to let her wait
31:11until the next morning
31:12before she returns
31:13for her shoes.
31:15The next day
31:16it was a bright
31:17sunny day.
31:18It was nice.
31:19I grabbed Sassy
31:22and I'm like
31:23come on dog
31:24we're going out
31:24into the woods
31:25we gotta get my shoes.
31:26I was terrified.
31:30I walked
31:31as quickly
31:32as I could
31:33to that hollow tree
31:34and there were
31:35my shoes
31:36sitting right there
31:37where I'd left them.
31:41It really scared me.
31:43I wasn't sure
31:43that I would see
31:44that creature
31:45standing there
31:45still staring at me.
31:46but there was
31:49nothing there.
31:51I looked at the stream
31:52to see if it had
31:53left any footprints
31:54behind
31:54because it was
31:55still pretty muddy
31:56there
31:56and I did see
31:58some kind of
31:59large footprint
32:00in the mud.
32:02Seeing the footprint
32:03made it real.
32:07I didn't stay
32:08very long
32:09because I wasn't
32:09sure that it wasn't
32:10still there
32:11waiting for me.
32:13So I headed
32:15out of the woods
32:15as fast as I could
32:16and this time
32:19Sassy was pretty
32:20eager to come
32:21with me.
32:24That event
32:25took away
32:26my place
32:26where I felt
32:27safe.
32:29I no longer
32:30went back in there
32:31because I didn't
32:31know what was
32:32in the woods
32:32waiting for me.
32:35I still have
32:36that image
32:37locked firmly
32:38in my mind.
32:39It was the
32:40Falk monster.
32:41nobody could ever
32:45convince me
32:46that I didn't
32:46see it.
32:50Domestic
32:51disturbances
32:52take on
32:53many forms.
32:53For some,
32:55like Joni,
32:56it's an encounter
32:57with a legendary
32:58creature.
33:00For a South Carolina
33:02girl named
33:03Gwen Johns,
33:04the unknown
33:05takes on
33:06a different form.
33:07not a creature
33:09but a moment
33:10out of time
33:11or what
33:15many call
33:16a time slip.
33:20Liverpool,
33:21England,
33:221996.
33:25A policeman
33:25reports something
33:26extraordinary
33:27from his daily
33:28patrol.
33:30He steps
33:31off the sidewalk
33:32onto Bold Street
33:33and immediately
33:34steps back
33:35in time.
33:39The policeman
33:40is in the
33:41exact same
33:41location
33:42but it's
33:43the 1950s.
33:44The cars
33:45are old.
33:46Stores that
33:47haven't existed
33:48in years
33:48appear right
33:49in front of him
33:50and then just
33:51like that
33:51he's in the
33:54modern world.
33:57The officer's
33:58story becomes
33:59one of the
34:00best known
34:01alleged examples
34:02of a time slip.
34:05A time slips
34:06basically when
34:07someone finds
34:08themselves at
34:08another point
34:09in history.
34:10Like they just
34:10kind of step
34:11through a doorway
34:11in time.
34:12Usually only
34:13lasts for a few
34:14moments but
34:15it feels totally
34:16real while it's
34:17happening.
34:19Stories of time
34:20slips happen
34:21all the time
34:22and one prominent
34:23one took place
34:24in 1901
34:25when these two
34:26women were
34:26touring the
34:27French Palace
34:28of Versailles
34:29and they both
34:30reported that
34:30suddenly it was
34:32as though the
34:32palace was
34:33populated with
34:34people from a
34:35century and a
34:35half earlier
34:36and that it all
34:37seemed completely
34:38real.
34:41Then there's the
34:42mysterious case
34:43involving Gwen
34:44Johns, a young
34:48girl who moves
34:48with her father
34:49to South Carolina
34:50in 1981.
34:53I was a dad's
34:54girl.
34:54I used to help
34:55him work on
34:55cars.
34:56I was around
34:57eight when my
34:58parents got
34:58divorced.
35:01My uncle had
35:02an old farmhouse
35:03that our great
35:04great uncle had
35:05lived in that was
35:06not occupied but
35:07just kind of run
35:08down.
35:10So my dad decided
35:11to move us there,
35:13myself and him.
35:13It was further
35:16in the country
35:17than I was used
35:18to.
35:19So, you know,
35:20we pull up.
35:21I remember
35:21thinking, I don't
35:23want to go in
35:23here.
35:26We walk in the
35:27house.
35:28It was old.
35:30Must have been
35:3120 years since
35:32anybody lived there
35:33at all.
35:35Gwen's father
35:35shows her around
35:36the house, but
35:38his demeanor changes
35:39when they reach
35:40the front room.
35:45My dad said,
35:47do not go in
35:48this room because
35:48there are things in
35:49here and they're
35:50locked up and you
35:51need to leave them
35:51alone.
35:55Pretty much cut me
35:56off any time I asked
35:57about it after that.
36:00But that stuck in
36:01my head.
36:03Every room just
36:03felt really heavy
36:05and dark.
36:06I didn't like to be
36:07in the house at all.
36:10It was almost like
36:11I was always being
36:12watched.
36:15One cold fall
36:16evening, Gwen and
36:17her father are in
36:18the kitchen making
36:19dinner.
36:20And he remembered
36:22he had to go to my
36:23uncle's house, which
36:23was just right up the
36:25driveway, basically.
36:28I was scared because
36:29I never stayed alone
36:30there.
36:31Gwen John's father
36:39leaves her alone in
36:40their new house in
36:41South Carolina for
36:43the first time.
36:44I was scared because
36:46I never stayed alone
36:47there.
36:51So I thought if I
36:53could see my dad down
36:54the driveway, I won't
36:55feel as alone.
36:58And from the front
36:59room, I can see
37:00better, but I'm not
37:00supposed to go in
37:01there.
37:02Her father had
37:04given her strict
37:04instructions never to
37:06go into the front
37:07room.
37:07But Gwen does so
37:09anyway.
37:11I slowly walked
37:12toward the front
37:13room, turned the
37:14handle, and it
37:15opened.
37:19And I remember
37:20smelling the dust.
37:22And there's dust
37:23covers on the
37:24furniture.
37:25And there was a
37:26mirror that was
37:27covered also.
37:27And that just
37:28creeped me out.
37:30getting to the
37:32window, as I
37:33pulled the curtain
37:34open, I remember
37:35smelling fresh and
37:37the heat from the
37:38summer heat.
37:40It looked almost a
37:42different season.
37:43Everything was clear
37:44and sunny.
37:46And that day was not
37:48hot and sunny.
37:52It looked like summer.
37:54As Gwen looks through
37:57the window, she hears
37:59an unfamiliar noise
38:00coming from outside.
38:04It was sputtering.
38:07Like a tractor.
38:09I didn't remember my
38:10uncle having a tractor.
38:12But I saw a tractor and
38:15an older man.
38:16And he had, like, blue
38:19jean overalls.
38:22It's a floppy, old,
38:23worn hat.
38:25His face was
38:26weathered.
38:27And he was on the
38:28tractor.
38:29And then I remember
38:30hearing, like, that
38:31sound if you hit metal.
38:34And then something came
38:36off the tractor.
38:37And it hit him in the
38:38head.
38:39Just kind of slumped
38:44over and fell off.
38:46I remember seeing the
38:47blood.
38:48It was in slow motion
38:49almost.
38:51And I remember panicking,
38:53like, I need to go help
38:54him.
38:54I need to go save him.
38:57I ran out of that room
38:59through the house.
39:00And the house was not
39:02the same.
39:05It was newer.
39:09Everything was clean.
39:10No dust.
39:12Smelled very fresh.
39:14Was well taken care of.
39:18I opened the door in full
39:19panic.
39:21It was bright.
39:23Sunlight and the heat.
39:25I could feel something
39:26horrible had happened.
39:28But as I stepped through
39:30that doorway, it was not
39:31summer anymore.
39:36It was gloomy, cold,
39:38chilly, afternoon again.
39:42And I felt totally
39:44different and confused.
39:47Something in me was
39:48looking for the tractor,
39:50but I didn't see
39:50anything like that.
39:54I couldn't figure it out.
39:55I was like, you know,
39:57am I crazy?
40:01My dad's coming down
40:02the driveway.
40:03I ran to him,
40:05and I was trying to tell
40:06him what happened.
40:07And I remember him going,
40:09quit making things up.
40:11My closest person,
40:12not to believe you.
40:14It felt terrible,
40:15thinking that I had
40:16dreamed it.
40:18I want an explanation
40:20of why that happened
40:20to me.
40:21Years later,
40:23Gwen learns a secret
40:25truth about her own
40:26family, one that gives
40:28her a degree of closure.
40:30As a young adult,
40:33I went to a cookout.
40:35It wasn't a family reunion,
40:36but it was a lot of people.
40:37And I remember somebody
40:38saying,
40:39great uncle had an accident
40:41in front of the house
40:42on his tractor,
40:43and he died.
40:46I found a couple pictures
40:48in front of the house.
40:49It just flipped a switch.
40:59The blood just went.
41:04That really happened
41:05because all that time,
41:07I thought it was in my head.
41:09This was real.
41:12That I walk into
41:13a different time,
41:14what I would call
41:15a time slip.
41:16The first time I heard
41:18about time slips,
41:20I remember thinking,
41:21I'm not alone.
41:27Home.
41:29It's meant to be
41:30a place of safety.
41:32But these strange
41:33encounters
41:34and bizarre incidents
41:36show how such safety
41:39is never guaranteed.
41:46is never insists.
41:49There's no peace.
41:49A sense of safety.
41:50Not sure,
41:52but it's not ground командy.
41:55It's not what's before.
41:56That's true,
41:57that's true,
41:57but it is to be
41:58the damage mirror.
