00:00Romance in Zimbabwe is taking strikingly creative new forms.
00:04In a cash-driven economy, money bouquets, real U.S. dollar bills folded into floral
00:09displays are fast becoming one of the most popular Valentine's gifts.
00:14In a rare cement flower market, florists say the demand is soaring due to the February
00:1914th, Valentine's Day.
00:21People still love flowers, they really want roses so much.
00:27But at the end of the day, if they see $20 in a money bouquet, the laugh feels hotter,
00:37and the gesture feels even more meaningful.
00:43Zimbabwe isn't alone.
00:45Similar trends have spread across Africa, including Kenya, though there the central bank has warned
00:53that folding and gluing banknotes into bouquets can bring heavy penalties for defacing currency.
01:00But here in Zimbabwe, this initiative is much celebrated.
01:05The person who came up with the trade, yeah, I just need to give them my hands up, yeah,
01:11they did a good job.
01:12Yeah, it's a way of appreciating my partner, and I can't speak for everyone.
01:17It depends on the background.
01:19Someone might not appreciate me giving them money, but someone may really appreciate it.
01:26So it depends on the background.
01:28So personally, I feel like giving my person money, yeah, it's a hundred for me, it's a hundred.
01:36Yeah, so I really like the trend.
01:38Back in Harare, another three-some romance is taking hold, gifts made from recycled scrap metal.
01:46At one shop, discarded car parts are melted down and turned into heart-shaped key rings, necklaces, and wine holders.
01:56Women love chocolate and flowers, but they are here today, gone tomorrow.
01:59This is something that we have collected from that would be filling up a landfill, but we've made it into
02:06something beautiful that you can give to someone on your Valentine's.
02:09Show them that you treasure them. There's a meaning behind it. There is a story to be told in each
02:14piece.
02:15The idea is to turn what was once trash into something beautiful and lasting, a Valentine's gift with both sentimental
02:22and environmental value.
