The Dirt is about getting real with businesses about the true state of their companies and going clear down to the dirt in solving their core needs as a business. Dive deep with your host Jim Barnish as we uncover The Dirt with some of the world's leading brands.

Episode 17: Bootstrapping his way from just a desk and a single account to a large successful call center in Costa Rica, Founder and CEO Richard Blank joins Jim Barnish on this episode to share his insight on effective communication strategies, investing in his teams, and the power of positive escalation.
With a track record for successful sales and training programs, Richard walks us through his key communication strategies that are beneficial not just for landing a sale, but also for every relationship in life. They discuss soft skill training instead of just hitting the sales goals; his buffer boomerang technique that keeps conversations constructive; positive escalation that builds relationships and pipelines, and boosts morale among teams; and how to hone your listening skill with phonetic, micro expression reading.

00:00was there any, you know, really memorable time that you can think of as you were just getting
00:04started new business abroad that was your true low point? Absolutely. The labor laws. I mean,
00:12I'm not from Costa Rica. I'm from Philadelphia. And so I realized that, you know, I popped my
00:17first account, landed a few more quickly, and then realized when I had a half a dozen agents,
00:22I was over my head because I was doing accounting, HR, you know, the contracts and marketing.
00:27And so my wife, Grace Bourbon, who was a top saleswoman for jewelry at the airport for Cafe
00:33Britt, she decided after three years of working for that company to resign and to work with me as
00:39the director of human resources and our legal representative to the Costa Rican government.
00:44So I realized I was way over my head and I needed some assistance. And also, since I am a
00:50guest in
00:51this country, I think it would be to my benefit to have somebody from this country being able to
00:56speak for our company, not more properly, but once again, representing the common interests of the
01:02culture that they grew up in. And so for me, I was mainly focused on developing their English skills
01:09and making sure they were properly prepared when onboarding and doing a lot of quality control.
01:15So I can coach and study their calls, increase their vocabulary so they're more diplomatic and
01:21strategic and try to reduce as much attrition as possible by having a gamification play culture
01:27so people can make friends and recharge the batteries.
01:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Here you are.
