A family of four, including a baby, are among the fatalities of a rogue elephant herd in eastern India. A herd of wild elephants trampled six people in Gondwar, a village in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district, in the early hours of Friday, Feb. 13, Vikash Kumar Ujjwal — a forest officer with Jharkhand’s Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change — confirmed to the Hindustan Times and Press Trust of India (PTI). The elephants entered the village on Thursday, Feb. 12, and trampled a total of six people to death in the early hours of Feb. 13 as they attempted to escape the rogue herd, the outlets reported, citing the forest officer.
