00:01Parliament's watchdog says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should not have brushed aside
00:05calls to remove Azam Baki amid the shareholding scandal surrounding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption
00:11Commission chief.
00:13Speaking to reporters here today, Public Accounts Committee Chairman Mas Emiyati Samsudin,
00:18who yesterday urged Azam to resign to protect MECC's image, said she was shocked at Anwar's
00:24position on the matter.
00:26She said she never expected the Prime Minister to make such a statement, questioning whether
00:31it implied that hard-working civil servants could act with impunity.
00:36She added that such remarks were dangerous as they raised concerns about institutional trust,
00:41misconduct and double standards within the civil service.
00:45Anwar yesterday defended Azam after allegations that the latter held shares in a financial
00:50services company that were well above the limit allowed for public officials, saying that
00:55the country's top graph-buster was doing his job well.
00:58Mas Emiyati also added that the issue could not be dismissed simply by claiming that the
01:03shares were later disposed of.
