Short filmTranscript
00:30Hello, everybody. It is Thursday, the 8th of January. Countdown is back for another winter warmer. So let's get everybody in from the cold. Our lexicographer ready to go, Susie Dent. The brilliant Debbie McGee joins us from the magic circle. And in a circle over there, of course, is our Rachel Riley. And today's World Typing Day, it's all about digital literacy and reminding people about typing. Do you not remember it wasn't that long ago?
00:58We were worried that people were typing and not writing. Now we're worried that people aren't even bothering doing that. Does this worry you, Susie? Because I think you're our gauge for this. If you're not worried, Rachel and I are not worried.
01:10Well, first thing to say is we always worry about new technology and its impact upon language. And usually our fears are unfounded.
01:17I do worry a little bit about losing literacy. But we've entered a new stage where we're speaking with our fingers anyway. So it will be interesting, objectively, to see where it goes.
01:27What about you, Debs? Do you do the voice messages?
01:29I do voice texting. Yes. But my family laugh at me all the time because mostly I don't read them back and they come up with strange things.
01:40But I still write because I do calligraphy. Oh, nice.
01:44So I will still write thank you notes or, you know, birthday cards. And I love writing.
01:50I'll check the post over the weekend. Let me get one from Debbie McGee.
01:53I didn't say I wasn't at all worried. I think it will be interesting to see where it goes.
01:57Yeah, we urge you. We urge you.
02:00Miguel is here, hoping to become an Octo Champ today. Our first of Series 93 in our first week.
02:07Because if you didn't catch it before Christmas, Miguel won the last four episodes before we brought back our best eight to crown a new champion.
02:15So this would be remarkable to get off to this kind of start.
02:18Miguel, I mean, just so cool in terms of how you're approaching it. So even-handed.
02:22Yeah, I think the way I would say the word I use is strategic.
02:27Yeah.
02:28For me, I have to play to where I feel my strengths are.
02:33And so I try to just narrow the space that I have to function by picking letters and numbers in the way that I can control some of the variables.
02:41It's like machine-like at times. We love it, but always with a smile, right?
02:44So Miguel's taking on Kev Strain. Just what a brilliant name.
02:49The nickname's already there if he becomes an Octo Champ. It's brilliant.
02:52Lives in the New Forest. How you doing, mate?
02:54I'm good, thank you.
02:55Are you going to rock us today?
02:58Hopefully.
02:59Yeah?
02:59Send us all gaga?
03:02Listen, he's a huge Queen fan, but this is the key.
03:05You were at Nebworth, 100,000 people in the palm of Freddie's hand.
03:13What was it like?
03:14It was special. Very special.
03:16The added fact that status quo were also on the bill.
03:19Yes.
03:20Yeah, it was magic.
03:21Well, listen, thank you for being here.
03:23Kev taking on Miguel.
03:25We'll either hand out a teapot or we'll crown our first Octo Champ.
03:29Can't wait. Let's do it.
03:29Once more, Miguel. Let's go.
03:35Okay, good afternoon, Rachel.
03:36Afternoon, Miguel.
03:37Okay, can I have a consonant, please?
03:39You can indeed. Start with L.

04:29Time's up, Miguel. How many?
04:32Seven. And Kev?
04:33Seven. Yes. I think it might be the same word,
04:36Miguel. Reclaim? Yes, Kev.
04:38No, miracle. Oh,
04:40yes! Fantastic.
04:42Very nice. Yeah. Oh, where are you from,
04:44you sexy thing?
04:46Miracle and reclaim.
04:48Two great sevens to start off today.
04:50Yes, very good. We just have more sevens.
04:52We did, yeah. Caramel, but it's
04:54another seven. Lovely, lovely.
04:56Kev, let's go again. Hi, Rachel.

05:49Almost work.
05:50And let's do it and get a call of the authorized recorder ш represents them!
05:51And they're here in the sixth koşull.
05:53How can do it bend to it?
05:54I don't know, but the only followed a whole new frame for this fight.
05:56It doesn't seem to be TV ent웠ily, whether it's really cake or anything.
05:58We haven't seen him in a couple of days before...
05:59Kev. Only five. Yeah, Miguel. Five as well. Yeah. What have you got?
06:06A thump. Thump. And a mouth. A mouth? Yes. Yeah. Measly, this was.
06:13Mm-hm. Can we go above fives? Yes.
06:15Time from geometry will give us a seven in apothem.
06:18And an apothem is a line from the centre of a regular polygon
06:21at right angles to any of its sides. OK.
06:2412.8 numbers for the first time today, Miguel Barker. OK, Richard,
06:28can I have four large, please? Your favourite. Thank you, Miguel,
06:31four from the top and two little.
06:33Let's see if we can use any of your tricks on this one.
06:35The small numbers, five and nine. And the big four, 75, 25, 100.
06:42And doing the honours, 50. And the first target, 572.

10:07Yeah.
10:08Anne, are you going to add anything else?
10:13Nothing.
10:14All right, let's move on to more letters.

11:20My fingers crossed for you here.
11:22Oh, it's not fair, I'm afraid.
11:24Oh, no.
11:24I'm sorry, Kev.
11:25What do we have in the dictionary corner?
11:26We have one more, didn't we?
11:28Yes, we have Eurostyle.
11:30Sounds like it means, yes, European.
11:32But actually, it's without the E at the beginning.
11:34So it's U-R-O-S-T-Y-L-E.
11:37It's there for eight.
11:37And it's a long bone in some lower vertebrates,
11:41such as frogs and toads.
11:42Shame Eurostyle doesn't exist, because the other E was there.
11:44It would have counted, it would have been N.
11:46All right, let's get back to the numbers.
11:48Let's do it in style.
11:49Kev?
11:49One large, please, Rachel.
11:52The more traditional, more popular one from the top.
11:56Five little friends.
11:57And this time of the round is...
11:58Eight, five, eight, ten, seven, and 75.
12:03And this time you need to make 636.
12:06Six, three, six.
12:07Numbers up.
12:07Five little ones.
12:17Five little ones.
12:18Five little ones.
12:20Tranquilla.
12:21One.
12:226-3-6, Kev Strain.
12:406-3-5.
12:41What a way.
12:42Will it be good enough, Miguel Barker?
12:446-3-5 as well.
12:45Oh, there you go.
12:47Kev, you're up.
12:498 times 75.
12:508 75s are 600.
12:53And then 5 times 7 is 35.
12:56Yep.
12:57Add that on.
12:58One away.
12:59Well done.
12:59Miguel.
13:008 times 8 is 64.
13:03Yep.
13:03Multiply that by 10.
13:06640.
13:07Then I take the 5 off.
13:09Take the 5 off.
13:10Yep.
13:10Same result.
13:11One away and the 7 points.
13:13I'm back in here, Rich.
13:14Well, you've lost your money.
13:15I'm one away as well, so you have to come back.
13:176-3-6, proving a real challenge this Thursday.
13:20Saturday afternoon as we have our sabbatical at this stage of every show with our Dictionary
13:25Corner guest.
13:27I wonder, can we just pick up, and I love these stories of these outrageous guests and
13:32these locations that, to be fair, are less and less in modern TV because the budgets are
13:39smaller and smaller and smaller.
13:42But when a show was successful in the 70s and 80s and into the 90s, I mean, they have
13:47budget curve, believe me.
13:49Big movie stars, as we found out yesterday.
13:52Take us somewhere else then.
13:53So I'm going to take you up to Bonnie, Scotland.
13:56Yeah.
13:56And we were doing an outside broadcast where I can't remember, actually, because it was
14:02so many years ago, whether we were making the Loch Ness Monster disappear.
14:06But no, I think we were making it appear, you know, because everybody's always hunting
14:10it.
14:11And the one thing I remember about that shoot was I froze to death.
14:15And in between every take, we'd lay on the deck of the boat we were on, you know, trying
14:21to cuddle up and keep warm.
14:23But the thing that happened during the recording was we had two life-size Nessies, you know,
14:31that were on floats and there was a way of making them look like they were swimming.
14:35Yeah.
14:35And in the middle of the shoot, one of them broke free and sunk to the bottom.
14:41Like anyone who's ever been to Loch Ness, the water is like black ink.
14:46Yes.
14:47And you can't see through it at all.
14:49And we had divers go down and everything.
14:51Nobody ever found it.
14:53And I just have always wondered if one day...
14:56It's going to float up.
14:57Or someone's going to be diving and actually find it and think they've seen...
15:03You know, they'll think they've seen the monster, but it won't.
15:05It would be, yeah, our whatever it was made of.
15:08Right.
15:08Thank you very much, Debbie, as always.
15:09APPLAUSE
15:10Well, some say 636 with a 75 and five small numbers is a myth.
15:18Let's find out.
15:19No, as soon as I sat down, there it was.
15:2275 minus 5 is 70, times by 10 is 700,
15:27and then 8 times 8 is 64 to take away.
15:31There you have it.
15:32APPLAUSE
15:33OK, 52 plays 19.
15:36Miguel, with that maximum, really putting some clean air between himself and Kev.
15:40But a long way to go.
15:42More letters, Miguel.
15:42OK, Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?

23:38They're small shrubs that yield edible fruit, a bit like guavas.
23:42My goodness me.
23:44Countdown from another planet.
23:46Can we add any other words?
23:47We're fiestas.
23:49Lovely.

23:51Yeah, softies.
23:53You know, like us.
23:54Yes.
23:55Right, 90 points already for Miguel, 32 for Kev.
23:59I want to see if we can get Kev to that half a century.
24:01Do you always think there's a real standard mark?
24:04There's no shame in that at all.
24:05And we've got four rounds to do it after origins of words.
24:09Well, thanks.
24:10To Steve Felton from South Wales, who's been wondering about a prefix.
24:15So that doesn't sound very exciting, except to a lexicographer, but it's actually really interesting.
24:20It's the prefix ex in expression, exploration, exaggeration, and in so many others.
24:26It doesn't seem to be a single use.
24:28So how did this happen?
24:29And what about the ex in terms of ex-partner, ex-directory, et cetera?
24:34Wow.
24:35So it doesn't...
24:36That's a word that no one on the age of 30 will know.
24:40Isn't that so funny?
24:41Yes.
24:41Such an extinct word, ex-directory, isn't it?
24:43Yes.
24:44Wow.
24:45Yes.
24:45It's a lovely place to be.
24:47Well, it appears in lots and lots of English words, just as Steve says.
24:52And actually, there is a very common theme going through all of them.
24:56I say all, there are a couple of exceptions, but it means out of.
25:00So you'll find it in exit, because you go out.
25:03You'll find it in exclude, because you shut something out.
25:07In export, because you sort of carry it out to the country.
25:10Extract or pull out.
25:12And indeed, in express, explore and expect.
25:15So in express, you get the X, obviously, and then you get the press bit.
25:22And it means to squeeze out or to press out.
25:24So for everybody who gets very annoyed when people ask for an espresso,
25:29rather than an espresso, it does sort of pretty much mean the same thing,
25:33which is squeezed out.
25:34So it's coffee that's squeezed out, which is quite intense, if you like.
25:38So it's pressed out coffee.
25:40Explore is really interesting, because explore is to cry out, believe it or not.
25:47And that was its original meaning, because probably from people
25:52who were exploring new lands came across them and cried out, like, you know,
25:56Eureka, we have discovered new land, which is, I think, lovely.
25:59Expect is to look out for.
26:02Spectare is to look, as you might get in your spectacles.
26:05Explain, a little bit more complicated, and I'll try to explain.
26:10It's folding out.
26:11So that planus means plain, because from the Latin, planus meaning flat.
26:16So you kind of make it smooth.
26:18You flatten it out so that it's easier to understand.
26:20And the X, as in former, ex-wife, ex-president, et cetera,
26:24is the same X that you might get in terms of being out of office, I suppose,
26:28is that you are no longer in that position.
26:30So you are, you know, kind of in the past, if you like,
26:33but you're out rather than in that relationship.
26:36So it trickles through everything, apart from the one that Steve did mention,
26:40exaggerate.
26:41There, confusingly, X means thoroughly, because it's actually to heap up,
26:45to sort of really embellish.
26:46But for most of them, it's all about going out.
26:48You did that quickly, because you could do a whole week, I think,
26:51just in the EX.
26:52Yes.
26:52Yeah, really good message.
26:54At 1932, you are rising above expectation here, Miguel,
27:03and it's always been high with you.
27:05You're going to smash your high score for sure.
27:07Kev's going to do his best to match you,
27:09and you're choosing these letters, Kev.
27:10Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
27:12Thank you, Kev.

28:15You're going with eight, Miguel?
28:17Eight as well.
28:17Oh, there you go. Points, Kev?
28:20Relating.
28:21Relating.
28:22And for you, Miguel?
28:23I've retaken.
28:24Yes, retaking.
28:25Very good.
28:26Yeah.
28:26So, eights is what we have.
28:28Yes, lots of inks.
28:30Yeah.
28:30Yes.
28:31Altering, alerting.
28:33But we had triangle, if you want to get off the inks.
28:37It's weird, because eight's brilliant and well done at home if you've got those points.
28:41And, you know, for mere mortals like myself, eights are few and far between, so it's nice.
28:45But frustrating, in a way.
28:46It just felt like there was going to be a nine, but no such luck.
28:4998 plays 40.
28:50Last letters, Miguel Barker.

29:54What's your seven, Miguel?
29:55A gutis.
29:57And for you, Kev?
29:58A outside.
29:59So back to Susie.
30:01It's not in, I'm afraid.
30:02I'm sorry, Kev.
30:04Drat, drat and double drat.
30:06Miguel gets up to 105.
30:09It's his highest score and there's still 20 points up for grabs.
30:12What did you have, Debbie?
30:13I didn't have anything.
30:15Yeah, it's no points for you then.
30:16What about you, Susie?
30:17Well, a gutis are the really big, long-legged rodents,
30:20as most of us know.
30:22And, I mean, where would Countdown be without its dacoits?
30:24Yes.
30:25The armed robbers.
30:26I mean, we don't want them, but they come up a lot.
30:28Yeah, there they are.
30:30All right, final numbers.
30:32Kev, nice ten points here would get you to 50.
30:34Just remember that as you make this choice.
30:37Let's find out.
30:38One large, please, Rachel.
30:39Yep, the most solid of choices if you want those ten points.
30:43Let's see if it works this time.
30:45Final numbers today.
30:45Ten, one, five, seven, six, and the large one, 100.
30:52And the target, 181.

31:17We're right.
31:18Quite.
31:19Could you be in good worldview?
31:19We're all right.
31:20And, uh, we can.
31:20.
31:21Ew.
31:21All right.

31:23We're all right.
31:24One.
31:251-8-1, Kev?
31:301-8-1. Nice. Miguel?
31:32I have 1-8-3.
31:331-8-3 for Miguel.
31:36It's been a long week for the Barker.
31:38Kev, for 10 points.
31:39So, 10 times 7 is 70.
31:43Yep. Add the 100.
31:45170. And 6 plus 5.
31:481-8-1. Lovely. Well done.
31:50APPLAUSE
31:52Delighted, Kev, you got to that 50.
31:54And, my goodness, it could be 60 now.
31:56Fingers on the buzzers, please.
31:58Thursday afternoons, count down, conundrum.
32:01MUSIC PLAYS
32:08Kev! Awareness.
32:10Goodness me! Yes!
32:13APPLAUSE
32:16If only there was another 14 rounds, you could win this.
32:19LAUGHTER
32:20A lovely 60 points, and we were saying during the break,
32:24but just playing in such a great spirit today.
32:26Been smiling for the whole 15 rounds.
32:28And that's mainly because of you, Kev, so thank you very much.
32:30Thank you. Cheers. Good man. Good man. Brilliant.
32:33Miguel, we have an OctoChamp after only four episodes of Series 93.
32:38So, I'm going to say this, we had seven OctoChamps last season,
32:43and it took a while before they started rolling in.
32:45So, it's very early.
32:47You've got 769 points total.
32:50If this was a million-pound drop,
32:52I'd put 990,000 on you're going to be back in the top eight
32:57at the end of the series.
32:58But who knows? It could be one of those.
33:00It does happen when we end up with 10, 11, 12 OctoChamps.
33:03But, Miguel, you are cut from a different cloth.
33:06It's been so good to have you here.
33:07And how refreshing to have someone that wasn't that familiar with Countdown.
33:11To come in here and become an OctoChamp. That's just brilliant.
33:15You're a fan for life now, right? I think so, yes.
33:18Excellent. You won't ignore me in the street if we pass each other.
33:21Never can't.
33:23Well done to you.
33:24APPLAUSE
33:27And, Debbie McGeat, we're going to make you disappear
33:29until tomorrow at the same time. Thank you for being here.
33:32Thank you. Lovely, Susie. And you are?
33:35Nick here. One thing we haven't done yet is a nickname.
33:39Yeah. And this is why,
33:41because I'm struggling a bit, we could always wait.
33:43I want it to be Domino related, so I was thinking like double six,
33:45but then he gets eights and nines.
33:48Well, I'm thinking the Dominator.
33:49Oh, for goodness, that's so right.
33:51Yeah, that's what he's been doing all week.
33:53Yes, and we've got the Domino connection.
33:55Are you happy with that?
33:56I can live with that.
33:57Lovely.
33:58Good work, Rach. What a way to end the show.
34:00Back tomorrow with two new challengers.
34:02Maybe our second OctoChamp of Series 93 will say hello for the first time.
34:07Same time, same place. You can count on us.
