05:32I have got a good one this time.
05:34One I can pronounce, which yesterday I was having problems.
05:38So it's an eight, and it's one of my favourite foods, samphire.
05:43Oh, samphire! Yeah, pick up at the seaside.
05:46I think about 18 months ago it got very in vogue.
05:49You couldn't move without samphire being on your food, I have to say.
05:52I love it. Yes.
05:54All right, then. More letters. Fraser?
05:56Hi, Rachel. Hi, Fraser. Could I get a consonant, please?
05:59You can indeed. T. And another?

06:56Miguel?
06:57Eight.
06:58Yes, what is the seven, Fraser?
07:00Bustia.
07:01Oh, I'm a bit worried for you here, Miguel?
07:03Burliest.
07:05Burliest.
07:06OK, well, we are safe in the bosom of dictionary corner.
07:09What have you got?
07:10Curliest.
07:11Yes, another eight.
07:13Yes.
07:14All right, it's the first numbers of today, Miguel.
07:16Thank you, Rachel.
07:17Can I have four large, please?
07:19Your favourite that you've prepared for, and we've seen evidence of that now.
07:22Four large, too little.
07:24This time they are seven and eight.
07:27And the big ones, 75, 25, 100 and 50.
07:31And the target, 597.
07:34597.

08:03Five nine seven, Miguel.
08:07Five nine eight.
08:09Oh, he's missed it by one, Fraser.
08:11600.
08:12Goodness me, seven points, Miguel.
08:14OK, so I have 50 by eight.
08:17400.
08:19And then add 100...
08:21Sorry, I said the wrong.
08:23Oh, well, listen, Fraser, you sneak in here then with a 600 for seven points.
08:28100 times seven.
08:30700.
08:32Minus 25, minus 75.
08:34600.
08:35Yep, three away.
08:36Straight in there, but 597, Rach.
08:39Yes, if you say 100 minus eight is 92,
08:44times that by seven for 644,
08:49and then you can take away the 50,
08:51and 75 over 25 gives you three to add back on for 597.
08:56There you go, nice.
08:57APPLAUSE
08:59As it is, that brings us to within one point champion and challenger,

12:12Sleepy.
12:13Yes.
12:14Gosh, another really hard one.
12:16As you can see, I'm still looking.
12:17See if we can improve, but we had sixes too.
12:19We did, yes.
12:20I was pretending to be asleep, but asleep.
12:23That's it.
12:24Uneasy, yes.
12:25Seven points in.
12:26It keeps the game really tight and interesting, though, doesn't it?
12:29Frasier, let's find out about your numbers game.
12:32I'm going to go one big, please, Rachel.
12:34Battle of the maths geeks.
12:36Everyone's cautious and nervous.
12:37You've got something riding on this.
12:39One large, five little.
12:41They are four, seven, four, six, eight, and 50.
12:48And the target, 228.
12:50Two, two, eight, numbers up.
12:52Two, three, two, two, three.
13:20All right, 2-2-8, Fraser.
13:232-2-8. Yeah, and Miguel?
13:252-2-8. You don't need a mass degree for this one. Off you go, Fraser.
13:2850 plus 7? 57.
13:31Times by 4. Yeah, perfect.
13:33Miguel? I did 4 times 50.
13:364-15. And then 7 times 4.
13:39And then 7 times the other 4.
13:41No extra points for one extra number. Well done.
13:44APPLAUSE
13:47Debbie McGee with us all week. Such a happy way to start 2026,
13:52especially when it's dark and cold outside.
13:54But I wonder, can we go back to the Paul Daniels show?
13:58Oh, yeah. And, of course, just phenomenally successful.
14:01Gazillions of viewers and stuff.
14:03And I'm guessing so many stories from it.
14:06Well, yeah, of course, because...
14:08And you know what it's like doing a long-running show like this.
14:11Lots of things can go wrong and happen.
14:14And, um, so one of the outside broadcasts we did
14:18was in the Lake District, and it was a Robin Hood scene
14:22with lots of, obviously, lots of tricks.
14:24And it was like a film set. It was absolutely beautiful.
14:27And we brought in Lionel Jeffries,
14:30who was famous for the railway children,
14:32the grandfather in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
14:34very, you know, that older, very pronounced English actor.
14:39Yes. Playing the sheriff of Nottingham.
14:42And, um, so Lionel, Paul and him hit it off immediately
14:46and told lots of naughty stories when they were on their own.
14:49But at the end, we were there for, you know, a week.
14:52And Paul and I had heard about this lovely hotel
14:56very close by to where we were filming.
14:58But the only thing was that you had to sit down for dinner
15:01by eight o'clock or you couldn't go in,
15:04because it was like a production and they came out
15:06with big trays with the bread and music and whatever,
15:09and really beautiful food.
15:11So Paul had checked with the producer,
15:13but then on the second night, the producer said to Paul,
15:16you know, we were running late anyway.
15:18Um, you've got to stay for a briefing for tomorrow.
15:21We've got a few, you know, issues.
15:24So he just turned around and said to Lionel,
15:26who wasn't staying at our hotel,
15:28Lionel, do you want to have dinner with Debbie tonight?
15:30And he said, yes.
15:31He said, the only problem is, mm, you're only just going to make it.
15:35So we had to go in costume with him and his sheriff
15:39of Nottingham leathers and me and Maid Marian
15:42with, you know, one of those funny hats and a long veil.
15:46And, of course, we walked into this lovely hotel
15:49and I had to go straight into dinner.
15:51Well, most of the people there, the guests, were Americans.
15:55And, well, you can imagine.
15:56They just thought it was part of the whole thing.
16:00And then they recognised Lionel because of his movies.
16:04Huge name. Huge name.
16:05So, yeah, and I had the most amazing night,
16:08but, you know, dressed up and it was just fun.
16:10I love it. Debbie McGee, our golden girl of Countdown.
16:13Thank you very much. Thank you.
16:15APPLAUSE
16:18All right, let's get back to today's countdown.
16:21Just seven points in it as we get back to those letters and Miguel.
16:25OK, Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
16:29D.
16:30And another.
16:31T.
16:32And another.
16:33G.
16:34And another.
16:35L.
16:36And another, please.
16:37M.
16:38And then can I have a vowel?
16:39A.
16:40And another.
16:41E.
16:42And another.
16:43Trying to keep up.
16:44And another, please.
16:45Last one, I.
16:47It was fast, wasn't it?
16:49Good luck, everyone.
16:50Good luck, everyone.
16:51Out of the book.
16:52Cheers, everybody.
16:53T.
16:54To.
16:55After a.
16:56T.
16:57T to.
16:58T.
16:59T.
17:00T.
17:01T.
17:02T.
17:03That's a head exploding round, that. Miguel?
17:24Eight. And for you, Fraser? It's the seven.
17:27The seven is? Loading. Loading.
17:29So you went down the route of the ING there.
17:32And Miguel? And legation. And legation again.
17:36My goodness, catch your breath. 30 seconds wasn't long enough.
17:39How did you get on? We had a couple, didn't we? Yes.
17:42Delation. Yes.
17:44What is that? That is the act of slandering someone
17:47or being extremely rude and damaging their reputation.
17:51So we have that. And then gelation, which is freezing.
17:54I'm looking to Fraser because he wants to go to the Antarctic,
17:56but gelation is the act of freezing. Brilliant eight from Miguel,
17:59just to get that lead out to 15 points.
18:02So Fraser, trying to close it again,
18:04which you've already successfully done before.
18:06So let's go. Consonant, please.
18:08Thank you, Fraser.
18:09L. And another.
18:11P. And a vowel.
18:14A. And a consonant.
18:17X. And a consonant.
18:20N. And another consonant.
18:23T. And a vowel.
18:26I. A consonant.
18:29M. And a final vowel, please.
18:34Final O.
18:36Here we go.
18:37A consonant.
18:52Monster.
18:56Fraser?
19:09Six.
19:10Miguel?
19:11Seven.
19:12Yeah, Fraser, what have you got?
19:13Motion.
19:14He's pipped you again by one letter.
19:16I have optimal.
19:17Very good indeed.
19:18Nice indeed.
19:19Yeah, well done.
19:19Nice indeed.
19:20Was it optimal, though, or can we do that?
19:21It wasn't optimal for Fraser, because motion, you need two O's, unfortunately.
19:24Oh, there you go.
19:25I'm sorry.
19:27But, yeah, we just had one of the seven.
19:29We did.
19:29Go ahead.
19:30Implant.
19:30And that's it.
19:31That's it.
19:32Goodness me.
19:32These are interesting rounds, though, weren't they?
19:34And Miguel's faring better two rounds in a row.
19:37That's experience of a champion just then, razor-focused,
19:41as we go back to the numbers for our two mathematicians.
19:44And you're picking, Miguel.
19:45OK, Richard, can I have four large, please?
19:48Your favourite, Miguel.
19:49Four from the top and two little.
19:51And this time, the small numbers are nine and five.
19:55And we have one hundred, fifty, seventy-five and twenty-five once more.
20:01And you need to make six hundred and ninety.
20:03Six nine zero.
20:04Numbers up.
20:04And we'll see you next week.
20:13And we'll see you next week.
20:15And we'll see you next week.
20:166-9-0, Miguel.
20:39I'm at 6-80.
20:40Oh, 10 away chance, Fraser, how about you?
20:426-90, I think.
20:43Well, let's find out, bang on, for 10 points.
20:45So I've got 9 times 75.
20:489, 75, 6-7-5.
20:50Plus the 25, gets you to 700.
20:54100 divided by 50.
20:56100 over 50, 2.
20:572 times by 5.
20:5910.
21:00And then take it away.
21:00Well done, 6-90.
21:02Nice.
21:04Second Tea Time teaser of today as the scores get close again.
21:09It's real vet is, real vet is.
21:11A real vet is able to treat any animal.
21:14A real vet is able to treat any animal.
21:16Hello again, Versatile was our second Tea Time teaser.
21:36It's probably a good word to sum up Miguel and Fraser, because it's been really nip and tuck today, really ebb and flow.
21:42And where it stands at the moment is our sixth time champion has 52 and just 12 points behind is Fraser McCall, who lives in Milton Keynes these days.
21:50Six rounds to go.
21:52And you're picking these letters, our challenger.
21:54Sure.

22:52What have you got, Fraser?
22:54Courted.
22:56Courted for you, nice old-school word.
22:58Miguel?
23:00I have crested. Yes.
23:02Absolutely fine.
23:04Did Paul court you in an old-school way?
23:06Was it start with the dinner, then the cinema?
23:08Yeah, theatre, yeah.
23:10Got down on one knee with pink champagne.
23:12It's very romantic.
23:14I love it.
23:16So why have you been here?
23:18It's very romantic.
23:20I love it.
23:22So I had a seven, which was tourers.
23:24Tourers, tourers, yes.
23:26Which you were after the core team.
23:28Indeed. Oh my gosh, you're on form today.
23:30Once a year, Debs, once a year.
23:32Just when I'm here, is that what it is?
23:34We love having you. Anything else?
23:36Oh, just sevens, yeah. Rousted, detours, that kind of thing.
23:38Could not improve.
23:40We'll move on, then, and we'll get more letters now from Miguel.
23:43Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
23:45Thank you, Miguel. W.

24:23Two minutes.
24:27One.
24:29Miguel?
24:42Six.
24:42And for you, Fraser?
24:43Six.
24:44And a six as well.
24:45Miguel?
24:46I have Siemens.
24:47And for you, Fraser?
24:49Swipes.
24:50Swipes is fine, but what's your view on Siemens?
24:53Yeah, Siemens, math noun, so you can't put the S on it, unfortunately.
24:55Just the singular for Siemens, then.
24:57Anything else?
24:58Er, nemesis?
25:00Oh, yes.
25:02Seven.
25:02Yeah, I love that.
25:03Named after the goddess of retribution.
25:0559-53 now.
25:08Look at that as we get our Origins Awards for today.
25:11Susie Dent.
25:13Thanks go to Bob Johnson from Norwich,
25:16who has been thinking about the word gross,
25:19because he says it's got so many different meanings.
25:21It can mean disgusting, you have gross profit,
25:25you sell engrossed, like produce, et cetera.
25:28Are they all linked, is what Bob is wondering.
25:31And, yeah, they are all sort of traceable, really,
25:35to a kind of single story in a way, except one, which I will explain.
25:39So, gross meaning disgusting comes from the old French gros, G-R-O-S,
25:46and that just means large or thick or coarse.
25:50And if something is sort of thick or coarse, it's unrefined, it's crude,
25:54it's quite unsophisticated, and I think from that we get the kind of yuck element.
25:57The repulsion starts to creep in.
26:01Gross meaning the whole amount, as in to sell engrossed or to buy engrossed,
26:06that comes from the same French word, gros, meaning large or big.
26:10In other words, you're talking about the entirety.
26:11So, when you're talking about your gross income,
26:14you are talking about it before tax,
26:16so the entirety before someone takes it away from you.
26:19A gross that is 144 items or 12 dozen,
26:25in case anybody is wondering about that,
26:27that goes back to a similar etymological route.
26:30So, that is a large group or a wholesale quantity.
26:34So, wholesale means, obviously, you sell the whole thing,
26:37as opposed to retail, which goes back to a French verb,
26:40meaning to cut up, sit into little pieces.
26:43But, again, wholesale and gross.
26:45And medieval merchants bought and sold in grosses.
26:47So, the number 144 made it very easy, apparently, for division.
26:51So, that's why it was chosen for that.
26:54So, all of those go back to a Latin word, grosses,
26:57meaning thick or large,
26:59but they kind of slightly went off in different directions.
27:02What I wanted to throw in, which I find really interesting,
27:05is that a grocer was originally somebody who sold engrossed.
27:08Yeah.
27:09And to be engrossed, engrossed in something,
27:12is from the Italian ingroso, meaning wholesale.
27:15Again, so if you're engrossed in something,
27:17you are so entirely committed to it,
27:19because you're fascinated by it.
27:20So, very, sort of, lovely circular route.
27:23Thank you, Suze.
27:27Well, listen, what a game we have on our hand today.
27:29Will it be the first crucial countdown conundrum of series?
27:3293.
27:33It's heading that way.
27:3559 plays 53.
27:37Four rounds to go.
27:38Fraser, your letters.
27:40Consonant, please, Rachel.
27:41Thank you, Fraser.

27:46Another consonant.
27:47N.
27:48And a vowel, please.
27:50A.
27:51And another vowel.
27:52O.
27:53A consonant.
27:55F.
27:55Another consonant.

28:23You.
28:24You.

28:29You.
28:31You.
28:31Not easy, Fraser? Five.
28:38Miguel? I'm going to say seven.
28:40It's going to say seven, Fraser, five.
28:43I will go brand. What are you saying?
28:45Inboard. Inboard, all one word.
28:48Yes, inboard motor, inboard an aircraft, that sort of thing.
28:51Well done. Well done.
28:53APPLAUSE
28:55I think the sound of a true champion is spotting a word where we all go,
29:00of course, but we didn't get it in 30 seconds, yeah.
29:03Anything to add to that? No, that's what I had.
29:06There is an and iron, which is a metal support for, you know,
29:10carrying the logs in a fireplace, a bit like a fire dog.
29:13How do you spell that? And iron, so A-N-D-I-R-O-N.
29:16It's in a hand iron, but we've just left the H off.
29:19Yeah, that's probably true. Unknown origins.
29:22Yeah, OK. More letters now from you, Miguel.
29:25Well done on that round.
29:27Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
29:30Thank you, Miguel.
29:31T.
29:32And another.

29:54R.
29:55And count down.
29:56R.
29:57R.
30:07–
30:08I.
30:10Big round this, Miguel?
30:27Seven.
30:28And Fraser?
30:29Just the five.
30:30Just the five.
30:31What's the five, Fraser?
30:33Greet.
30:34It's that experience.
30:35He's been under this pressure before.
30:36Miguel?
30:37Germia.
30:38Germia.
30:38Yes.
30:39Seems unlikely in the dictionary world.
30:41Yeah.
30:43What are two rounds from the champion as he edges towards his seventh win?
30:50Not there yet.
30:51How do we go on the dictionary corner?
30:53Remoter.
30:54Yes, of course.
30:55Remoter place you could not find.
30:57And actually a really interesting one, trireme, interesting to me anyway,
31:00it's an ancient Greek or Roman war galley, tri, because it had three banks of ores.
31:04Yeah.
31:05There you go.
31:06So three interesting sevens.
31:08It means there's 20 points in it.
31:10With 20 points left to play for.
31:12But Fraser, mass is your strong point, so don't give up hope yet.
31:16Here we go.
31:16I'm going to go one big.
31:18You're going one big.
31:19For the teapot, this is your gamble.
31:23Fair enough.
31:24One big.
31:25You're the boss.
31:25Five little.
31:26They are nine, ten, five, seven, five, and 25.
31:35Let's see.
31:36The target, 420.
31:374-2-0.
31:39Numbers up.
31:39The target, 5-1-0.
31:40The target, 5-1-0.
31:41The target, 5-1-0.
31:42The target, 5-1-0.
31:42The target, 5-1-0.
31:43The target, 5-1-0.
31:44The target, 5-1-0.
31:44The target, 5-1-0.
31:45The target, 5-1-0.
31:45The target, 5-1-0.
31:46The target, 5-1-0.
31:47The target, 5-1-0.
31:48The target, 5-1-0.
31:48The target, 5-1-0.
31:49The target, 5-1-0.
31:49The target, 5-1-0.
31:50The target, 5-1-0.
31:50The target, 5-1-0.
31:51The target, 5-1-0.
31:52The target, 5-1-0.
31:524-2-0, Fraze?
32:10Yeah, 4-2-0. Yes, but the problem is this, Miguel?
32:134-2-0. Off you go, Frazer.
32:167 plus 10, 17. 7 plus 10, 17.
32:19Times by 25. 4-2-5.
32:22And then subtract the 5.
32:23This is why you never gamble with one large.
32:25Yeah, Miguel?
32:26And I have 25 plus 5 plus 7 plus 5.
32:33That should give you 42. It does.
32:35And then multiply that by the 10.
32:37And that's your win again, guaranteed.
32:39Yeah, well done.
32:42So, not to be a first crucial conundrum of Series 93,
32:47but a really good afternoon.
32:49And we finish it now with fingers on the buzzers, please.
32:52Unscramble these nine letters for me.
32:55Our Countdown Conundrum.
32:56Miguel?
32:57Paintwork.
32:58Let's have a look.
32:59Well done.
33:00And he gets his seventh win with Burley.
33:02A scratch on him.
33:03Just a 93 today for Miguel.
33:05And Fraser really
33:25his seventh win with Burley a scratch on him. Just a 93 today for Miguel. And Fraser, really
33:32strong competitor, but the one large didn't get it done, did it? I'll learn my lesson.
33:39That's it. That's it. Thank you for being here. Really appreciate it. It's been a great
33:42day. It's a weird situation we're in here, Miguel, because you won four at the end of
33:46Series 92. We might have our first Octo Champ before we have one week of Series 93. You
33:52feeling any pressure? A lot. But remember that I work in a school, so the pressure is
33:59different. This is calm. Do you know what, though? You've also got a couple hundred kids
34:04going. If he makes a mistake, we're going to remind him about it. We'll see you tomorrow.
34:09Big day. Excellent stuff. We'll be very happy to have Debbie and Susie back. Thank you.
34:13See you then. And all done, Rach. Wow, what a week. We've got to start thinking of our first
34:17nickname of the Series. Very, very, very true. Let's see. 15 rounds away from her first Octo
34:22Champ. New challenger to say hello to tomorrow. And let's hope you can come back and join us.
34:27We'll be waiting for you. You can count on us.
