00:00When we were filming White Lotus, I brought a backpack, actually a bag, of American snacks
00:07because I didn't know what it was going to be like on the island we were filming. And
00:10word got around that I had all the different snacks. And there was a bribe game. I used it
00:16to be able to show up a little bit later to set on certain mornings in exchange for some American
00:21snacks that I had brought. Welcome everyone to this live recording of Take 10 with Deadline.
00:28Please welcome our special guest, Patrick Schwarzenegger.
00:33Thank you. Thank you for having me.
00:42Thank you for being here. And thank you very much to our sponsors tonight, Kettle One. We very much
00:48appreciate the cocktails that are going around. So thanks for that. All right. So Patrick, first up,
00:53what have you seen and loved so far at Sundance?
00:58So far, so we got in here, what, three days ago. On Friday, we went to I Want Your Sex by Gregoraki,
01:07which was quite interesting. It was great. It was really, I didn't know what exactly I was getting
01:14into. But it was, I mean, he has, I think this was his 11th film at the festival. Really kind of fun,
01:21over the top, hypersexual. But it was, it was great. So I saw that on Friday. Saturday, I woke up,
01:30came down here to get a coffee. And the person I was sitting next to or standing next to in line
01:36was talking about this movie, Fing, F-I-N-G. And they had an extra ticket. And they were like,
01:45do you want to come? And I was like, sure. So I went with two people that I hadn't met and went to
01:50see this movie called Fing, which was a really kind of cute Taika Waititi film that was like
01:57about this. It's kind of like a family adventure comedy movie, which was, it was really great as
02:06well. So those are the two that I've seen so far. That's such a random story of Sundance Run-In,
02:13where you go with two total strangers for a movie. Yeah, they just had scored tickets. They were
02:18saying on like Reddit, wall in line for coffee. And then they were so excited. And then they were
02:23talking about it. And they said, it's, it's kind of like an E.T. movie, they say. And I was like,
02:26I love E.T. That's like one of my top three movies. And they're like, do you want to come?
02:30And I was like, yeah, yeah, sure. Love the spontaneity. Okay, so you're about to start
02:37shooting Bunker with Stephen Graham, Javier Bardem, and Penelope Cruz. What can you tell us
02:44about that, if anything? I can't say too much about it, except that's a, and Florian Zeller's the
02:49director, and also Paul Dano's in it. So the cast is like, I mean, it's an incredible cast. And for me,
02:56that's kind of been my, my dream is to continuously work with amazing actors, work with amazing
03:03directors, writers. Florian Zeller is an incredible playwright. He's an incredible writer,
03:08director, obviously, they got the Oscar for The Father with Anthony Hopkins a couple of years ago,
03:14which was a beautiful movie. And so to be able to work with these kind of caliber actors and to be
03:23able to learn from them is, is a dream come true for me. So I'm actually, I'm literally flying
03:28tomorrow morning from here, hopefully, I make it out of here to Spain. So I'm really excited to go
03:34film, film that. Wow, that's fantastic. Some warm sun, I hope, at least. We'll see. I don't think so.
03:41Maybe. Okay. What non-industry job would you be doing in an alternate universe?
03:51Not, so it's not acting, I can't say producing or something. Non-industry. You know, and I've always,
03:56when I'm on set, people always make fun of me because I'm the, I'm the snack guy. And I've always
04:06said that I would be, I would be really good at running craft services, like having a crafty truck
04:12and having just the best coffee. And I'm a coffee connoisseur. I love coffee. And which is why
04:23espresso martinis are my favorite drink. It's a good mix of two of my favorite things. But I would
04:30have a, an amazing craft service setup. Okay, wait, what's the top of your snack list then?
04:37Well, it depends. Like when I'm flying, it's very different than if I'm working on set. I've,
04:43when I'm on set, I try to do, because there's so much downtime, there's a lot of like, just,
04:48you end up, you'll go through bags of M&Ms or whatever's in front of you. So I try to bring
04:52kind of healthier snacks. But if I'm flying, and I'm, you know, I feel like calories don't count
05:00in the air, and I'll just get whatever at the airport. So yeah.
05:04Oh, yeah, you're dead right about that. Anything goes when you're in the air. So you mentioned
05:09espresso martinis. Is there a secret? This is the signature espresso martini. Is there a secret
05:15to making it perfectly that you can tell us? Well, no, but I would say for me, I like mine a
05:24little bit less sweet. So I don't, I don't, I don't like to have my cocktails, especially if I'm
05:28having more than one. I don't like to have too much sugar. But for me, the espresso martini is like
05:34the perfect first drink of the night, get kind of get going. And it's also kind of perfect. This is
05:41with with Sundance and with kind of the mountains and the snow and things of that nature. So
05:47but it's really been kind of a cool experience to actually be here at at Sundance. And Kettle One
05:54has actually been the sponsor of Sundance. And that's who I'm out here with and kind of the
05:58marriage between working with them and then getting to be at Sundance with the film festival
06:03and something that I'm so passionate about and obviously love. It's been kind of a just a perfect
06:08weekend and experience. So what is the best career or life advice you've ever received?
06:16I feel like I mean, I've gotten so much great words of wisdom. I mean, I think that, you know,
06:23obviously, my parents, my grandparents have all instilled specific kind of traits and have given
06:31words of wisdom over the years. And I think one of the things that that stands out through kind of
06:37the history of my family is finding ways to give back is something that I'll always kind of remember
06:43from them. And then obviously, on different sets, I've gotten to learn from from different actors.
06:48I've talked about this past, even on White Lotus, Walden Goggins, me asking him for advice and him
06:53giving me, you know, his thoughts on on nerves and what nerves are on on set. And what are those?
07:01Well, the the the it was one of our first days of filming and I was nervous. And it was me and Walden,
07:08we were standing off camera. And and I had asked him, I said, Do you get nervous? You know,
07:13so you still get nervous at this stage of your career. And Walden's very like, you know,
07:18yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I was like, okay, okay. And then he was like,
07:33but I never fucking question my work. And he was like, you need to know that you've done the work.
07:41And if you do the practice and you do the prep, that you're right for this role, you got picked for
07:46this role for a reason. And so it's okay to have nerves, but you've done the work and you need to
07:51just go up and show. And it was just kind of a cool moment for me to learn from from someone like
07:57that, that that someone of that caliber still gets nervous, but that he's done all the work and that
08:02he's confident in his process. And yeah, it was just a yeah, I don't know. I love that though,
08:10just trust that you were chosen for a reason. Yeah, trust the process and your your, you know,
08:15the method and and the work that you've put in. What's on your watch list for a movie martini night
08:22at home? Wow, I think, well, during the holidays, that was I was home with my my wife, and it was
08:33kind of our first Christmas and holiday season as a as a married couple. And she had her family
08:39fly into town. And we did. We did a martini night. And we did a lot of Christmas movies. I mean,
08:46we did home alone, we did the holiday we did. She hadn't seen die hard. So I know you do think
08:52die hard for Christmas. We did we did die hard for Christmas. Selfishly, we watched some of the
08:58Academy movies, obviously, which was it was a great time. And yeah, well, that sounds lovely. And it was
09:05it was great. I love the holidays are like the my favorite, favorite time. If you could play any
09:11role you wanted, what would you choose? Oh, God, you're bringing up the tough questions, huh?
09:19I try. I feel like I've been I think for me, where I am in my kind of stage of my career, it's it's it's
09:27kind of going back to what we were talking about with with this next movie with Florian Zeller and
09:31with Bunker. It's it's less about kind of a specific, you know, dream role. But it's about
09:36kind of dream directors and dream cast and people that I can continuously get to to learn and grow
09:42from. I mean, I'm this movie that I'm doing Bunker is I'm filming for eight days, you know,
09:47but to go into work with, like you were saying, all these incredible actors and an Oscar winning,
09:53you know, writer and director. Those are my my dream roles. I mean, White Lotus was my my dream role.
09:58That was something that I was was dying to work with someone like Mike White. And, you know,
10:04when I was auditioning and stuff that I only knew little snippets of what the character was.
10:10And then when I read it, I was like, oh, OK. But it's to work with that that kind of a person is
10:16is such an incredible opportunity. And it's, you know, those types of of of writer directors and
10:23stuff. They push you. Their writing is so complex. The characters are never kind of this
10:28on the page, you know, the simple character. And I think that's something that people kind
10:34of watched with White Lotus is, you know, my character Saxon seemed very one way the first
10:39three, four, five episodes and then kind of had this this a little bit more of a beautiful
10:44transition towards the end and arc. And I think that's what great writers do. They create these
10:49on the outside. It might look as one way. But on the inside, they're very complex and
10:53dealing with, you know, moral insecurities and other other issues. And those characters
10:58are really quite fun to to to dive in and pick apart and play.
11:04Well, my next question was actually about Saxon. OK, what do you think he's doing five years
11:09from now? Five years from someone backstage said to me it was only fans. But
11:15I don't know if Mike White ever brings him back. I don't want that. That'll be only fans
11:25would be a tough thing to do. I don't know where, you know, I don't know. People always
11:31ask that. I Mike leaves things kind of open ended and ambiguous. And I think he's he he
11:37leaves things to that to that end for a reason. You know, I think that he likes people chatting
11:44about it, talking about it, coming up with their own conclusions of where they'll those
11:48characters will go. And then I think that he also leaves it open ended so that he has
11:52the opportunity to bring them back one day. I have no idea. That's you know, he's done
11:57that in season two and season three. So I don't know where Saxon will be in five years
12:02from now. I yeah, I'm not sure if you got to go back for an all stars kind of reunion
12:10special. Which of the White Lotus alumni would you want to work with?
12:15I mean, I would selfishly say the same people that I got to work with on this last season,
12:23just because we had such a beautiful and amazing experience of all being together in the same
12:29hotel on this island in Thailand for seven months together. It was just like an experience that
12:34it was like a summer camp for elongated portion of time. It was just a it's an experience that I
12:43I don't think I'll ever you know, I hope I have it again. But it's it's it's such a unique
12:49opportunity that show. And you forge kind of these beautiful relationships and bonds and
12:55friendships that you'll have forever. I mean, you literally with these people day and night for
13:02seven months, it's a it's it's a lot. But Jennifer Krulich as well. Well, of course, we can invite
13:08I was gonna say we can invite her to come. She did not die. That was all fake. Okay, if you could
13:16have dinner with any actor or director living or dead, who would you choose? I mean, I've always been,
13:26well, I took it I took a Spielberg class at school. You take a you take a year of Hitchcock,
13:34and then it goes into Spielberg and how Hitchcock influenced Spielberg and and all of his different,
13:40you know, films and and the scores and the music and and the suspense and and all the different
13:47traits of what he's learned from from Hitchcock. So we watched every single Hitchcock movie then
13:51watch every single Spielberg movie and kind of dissected and you write papers on it. So I
13:56I feel like someone like Spielberg would be amazing to to get to actually meet after learning so much
14:02about him. But yeah, I would probably say, yeah, that'd be that would be I mean, Christopher Nolan,
14:12Tarantino would probably be a bunch of directors because I see some of the actors out and about. So
14:20directors are more recluse people you can't access easily. Yeah. Yeah. How do you define success for
14:28yourself now versus five years ago?
14:33How do I define success if I'm I mean, look, I think for me, I feel extremely successful in the sense
14:41that I'm doing what I love. I'm doing what I'm passionate about and what I enjoy. I feel like
14:50it's something that I continuously get to learn from that I get to become better at. It brings me a sense
14:58of joy and and yeah, I mean, so to me, I'm I feel like, you know, success maybe growing up, you know,
15:08when you're a teenager or other parts in life, you think of success towards it, maybe a monetary form.
15:15Um, but it's, you know, so much has happened in my life in these past years that makes me feel
15:21so successful with with getting married this past year. Um, with, you know, the show coming out, um,
15:27with, um, being healthy, you know, that's the ultimate form of success that I find. Um, and, uh,
15:37yeah, just getting to live and do what I really enjoy and love with people that I that I love is,
15:42um, to me feels like success. Yeah. That's nice. I like that. What TV shows do you comfort watch on repeat?
15:55I, I actually don't watch many things on repeat television shows. No, I mean, I sometimes if I'm
16:03like really just want to kind of go back, I'll watch like the, the open, the first season of Entourage
16:10or something, um, just like to, just to hang out and chill. But usually I'm starting, there's so
16:16much new content out there that it's, it's tough to go back and rewatch it. But, but my wife,
16:23I don't know if this is a bad, I don't know if she's normal or not. She rewatches, she's watching
16:28like the OC for the third or fourth time. Hello, me too. And, and then she finishes that and then she
16:34goes to the vampire diaries for the third time. And then she goes, and I, and I, she just cycles
16:39between like five or six shows that she watches on repeat, on repeat. And I'm just like, don't
16:44you want to try something new? She's like, no, I love these. Dawson's Creek is probably in there
16:48as well. It's possible. She's, uh, she's normal, totally normal, normal. Okay. Yeah. So that's,
16:54that's, that's what she does. But I, I feel like I'm there's, yeah, there's so much great material out
16:59there between all these different networks and streamers and then the movies that are out. And
17:04especially this time of year with the Oscars and trying to make sure I'm caught up on and then
17:08Sundance and the new films, the new Indies that are coming out. I feel like it's constant,
17:12just new material that I'm, I'm out there watching or trying to stay up to date on who are the new
17:17upcoming amazing directors and who are people that I want to work with and who are great upcoming
17:21actors. And, um, yeah, so I, I, I don't really rewatch television shows. Wow. I can't relate,
17:30but I relate to your wife. Yeah, I know. Okay. I'm sorry. You're forgiven. Okay. What's one
17:36wellness habit you swear by and one you've tried and ditched? I gotta be honest. I ditched the cold
17:45plunge phase. Just wasn't enjoyable. It was, uh, it was something I, I got really into during
17:53kind of like the COVID lockdown phase. I was doing that at home. And then I just,
17:58and then there was like one study that said that you shouldn't do it after working out because, uh,
18:03you know, it, it kind of hindered muscle growth or something. And I was like, I'm never doing it again.
18:09And I just, I didn't do it. So that that's one that I kind of stopped. I do love the opposite. I do
18:15love hot bat, you know, jacuzzis or something. Um, but what's a sleep or what was the other thing?
18:21What's a, what's one that you swear by sleep? Yeah. Sleep. I do like sleep. Um,
18:28what's another one that I swear by, uh, working out, I guess. You're a healthy type of guy. I get it.
18:34I try. Yeah. I have my vices, but yeah. What's on your karaoke playlist?
18:39Karaoke playlist. Well, we did a lot of karaoke actually during White Lotus. Natasha Rothwell,
18:48um, set up a karaoke night at her, at her beautiful villa that she had, um, or, or no,
18:54she set it up at, I forgot where she said that, but, uh, we did, our family did, we are fam,
18:59we did the, we are family song, which was, um, Sister Sledge, isn't it? I think it's Sister Sledge.
19:04And then I did, uh, I did Parker Posey and I did, um, George Michaels. We're both huge George
19:11Michaels fans. Which song? Faith, the best. Yes. And, uh, we would always sing, we would,
19:17whenever we got to hair and makeup together in the mornings and we said we would always play
19:21George Michaels. Um, so that's what we did. Uh, you know, then you, then, you know,
19:26it depends if you've had a few martinis, you know, if you had a couple of kettle one martinis,
19:33then you might start getting into some bolder choices. Um, and, uh, yeah. Well, it's a shame
19:42you haven't had a few martinis right now or we would get you singing something. That's probably true.
19:46Okay. What's one misconception people might have about you as an actor?
19:52Um, I'm not sure. I don't know. I can't think of one either. I was hoping you would come up with
20:03one. Misconception? I don't know. It's good to keep people guessing. That's the perfect answer. Yes.
20:13Okay. You'd be surprised how many people came up to me during White Lotus and asked if I was really,
20:20you know, like that, or if I would do stuff with my brother like that. I was like,
20:25are you kidding me? It's strange. People are weird. Yeah. Yeah. It's a TV show people. Okay.
20:33You would think. Yeah. All right. You're onto the final lightning round. Okay.
20:37Yeah. Early mornings or late nights? Early mornings. Beach vacation or mountain escape?
20:44I love the mountains. I do. I do love a beach, but I love... No White Lotus beach? No?
20:50Yes. Yes. I do love the beach, but I do. There's something just like freeing about being in the open,
20:57just with mountains and fresh air and, and, um, yeah, I just, I love that nature.
21:04Sure. Okay. Last one. One food you could eat every single day of your life.
21:11Um, I don't know if this is food, but, but coffee.
21:16That's one thing I could not do a day without. Same. Yeah. Same. Well, you made it to the very
21:22end of Take 10 with Deadline. Thank you so much. Thank you.
21:25Patrick Schwarzenegger. Thank you. I appreciate it. Congratulations. Thank you.
