00:00By catapult vertically or like a normal airplane,
00:04Techevere's drones can take off whichever way the mission requires.
00:08The unmanned aircraft monitor the English coastline,
00:11track pollution in the Mediterranean,
00:13and even observe tank movements in Ukraine.
00:16But the company's beginnings were quite different.
00:20We were absolute geeks and nerds.
00:22Up until 2008, it was primarily a software-based business.
00:27Our customers were banks, telecoms, healthcare companies.
00:31Ricardo Mendez and his university friends
00:33were already working with artificial intelligence back then.
00:36They wanted to make everything interconnected.
00:38Eventually, flying hardware entered the picture.
00:41Techevere challenged established aircraft manufacturers
00:44and grew into a serious competitor in the drone market.
00:48Well, if we're a software AI communications company,
00:54actually, we have the right to play and to win in this market
00:59and to build something very different.
01:03At first glance, the drones look like small airplanes,
01:06nothing obviously revolutionary.
01:08Their secret lies inside.
01:10The components were not allowed to film
01:12and the software running in the background.
01:14Techevere's approach is to let an AI-powered virtual pilot fly along.
01:18The drones can reach their destination and return even without GPS.
01:25You can use the cameras, you can use radars,
01:28you can use signals of opportunity from radio frequency
01:31to understand where you are if you don't have GPS or communication.
01:37AI also analyzes the data the drones collect,
01:41helping users make informed decisions.
01:44More than 100 employees work solely on AI development.
01:48The drones from Portugal fly missions around the world
01:51and for years they've been helping in Ukraine,
01:53keeping a close eye on Russian invaders
01:56and passing on enemy positions.
01:59Techevere is benefiting from a shift in awareness across Europe and globally.
02:05That things have changed on the field
02:07and that unmanned capabilities, autonomous capabilities
02:11are central to military operations.
02:14For decades, Portugal was viewed mainly as Europe's low-cost manufacturing base.
02:19The fact that high-tech companies now help shape the country's image
02:22is due to education.
02:24In recent decades, more and more highly skilled engineers
02:27have graduated from Portuguese universities.
02:30Portugal is colorful, hip and successful.
02:32A tourist magnet, attractive to foreign investors
02:35with an economy that continues to grow.
02:38The transformation accelerated after the 2010 economic and financial crisis.
02:43Now we have a very high-skilled entrepreneurial new generation
02:49that is not only building new projects as entrepreneurs
02:53but also bringing new management skills to the economy.
02:58Techevere offers skilled jobs even outside the major cities of Porto or Lisbon.
03:05Last year the company delivered more than 200 complete systems,
03:09each with multiple drones.
03:11The CEO won't say whether Techevere will still be building drones in 10 years.
03:17We started in the aerial domain
03:19because we believe it's where we can make the most difference
03:22but there's a tremendous opportunity to bring these technologies into ground,
03:27into water, surface, underwater, into space where we are present as well, etc.
03:32So it's really a continuum.
03:35Techevere is currently one of Portugal's most exciting companies
03:39when it comes to combining hardware and artificial intelligence.
