France could become the first European country to impose restrictions on Instagram and TikTok for children under 15. This comes after Australia imposed a landmark ban on social media for minors.
Transcript
00:00More of this, and less of that, is what the French government is aiming for with its new ban.
00:11Let me send you a great video.
00:15Social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok could soon be off-limits for these youngsters.
00:21They are not amused.
00:24Social media is relaxing and fun.
00:26It allows us to be in touch with people and to get informed.
00:30Most of us will find a way around it by using a foreign server or our parents' ID card.
00:38We make friends on social media, and we're old enough to regulate ourselves.
00:44The government has triggered a fast-track procedure to get the new rules passed
00:49for the start of the next school year in September.
00:54This parliamentarian says the draft law will prevent social platforms
00:59from making profits at the expense of child health.
01:03Our children's brain time is not for sale.
01:06These platforms prevent the brain from developing correctly.
01:10Quite the contrary.
01:11Look at the impact of social media.
01:13Sleep disorders, attention disorders, difficulties with concentration.
01:18Our bill gives a clear framework to those educating young children.
01:22It'll be easier for them to ban the use of social media.
01:27Protecting the young from social media has wide-ranging support in both houses of parliament.
01:33Still, some parliamentarians say the builders not address the root problems.
01:39We should ban the most predatory algorithms the platforms are using to monetize people's attention.
01:45And we should focus on better educating children with regards to social media, and their parents, too.
01:53Under the new rules, social media platforms would use third-party technologies to check the user's age.
02:00Other European countries are mulling similar thresholds.
02:03These governments know that it will be possible to circumvent the new rules,
02:08but this is also a way of putting down a marker of saying social media no longer have free reign.
02:20These youngsters admit that spending their spare time offline might indeed have some perks.
02:27I guess we will have to do more sports, play ping-pong in the parks, football or volleyball.
02:35When I come home, I normally watch a little video.
02:39Now I will have to read a book.
02:43It's going to be hard at first, especially for those who are a bit addicted to social media, but we'll survive.
02:51They're aware that too much time online isn't good for them.
02:55And yet, they can hardly imagine a future without social media.
03:00Well, let's go to a call.
03:05Thank you, Dan.
03:08Interesting.
03:09Sorry for this.
03:10Sorry.
03:14See you later.
03:25I don't care.
