00:00A visit from Ghana's president to Zambia has seen the clothes that the two presidents were wearing
00:06becoming something of a hot topic. The Ghanaian leader was wearing a traditional outfit called
00:12a fugu, which many Zambians then mocked. But Zambia's president, who'd been dressed in a
00:18suit and tie, soon came to his guest's defence, saying he loved the design. In fact, he'd be
00:23ordering some of it for himself. It's really reignited the question over people's feelings
00:28about their own heritage. Well, this is from our Ghana correspondent, Justice Baidu.
00:33The cloth that I am wearing is called fugu. It is a traditional cloth that is made in northern
00:41Ghana. When the Ghanaian president, John Mahama, wore the same dress on an official visit to Zambia,
00:48it was the first time that many people in the southern African country were seeing it. Many
00:54thought it was a blouse meant for women. And as such, began an online show intended to demean
01:02Mr. Mahama's dressing as primitive and in praise of the Zambian president, Hakainde Hichelima,
01:11who wore a suit. The trend went so hard that even Mr. Hichelima had to weigh in himself.
01:19I'm very happy that the foreign minister, you dressed like that. I asked my team to post
01:27on various platforms that were associated with that. The president of Zambia will be ordering
01:34more of that stuff for himself.
01:37While many Zambians laughed of the Ghanaian fuguata in several Twitter rants, the Ghanaians rode on the
01:50bars to create a spotlight on the dress. And many people, including people who sell this dress,
01:57have been cashing in. And several events like fugu photo sessions and meetups have been happening
02:04across Ghana all over last week. It has grown my business. It has increased demand.
02:10People call me from places.
02:12We just want to come here, have fun, have a shoot, you know, get interactive and then tell people out
02:19there that batakari or fugu or smog is a beautiful attack for both men and then women.
02:25Mr. Mohammed's visit was to deepen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Zambia and explore opportunities
02:37under the African Free Trade Area Agreement after.
