00:00All right. My name is Shakira. And I'm Deidre. We're trivia for us. A mind game for the culture.
00:09And we have a great experience for you. We want to first say thank you to New Voices
00:16and the Essence team for having us here today. And we're going to just share a little bit about
00:22us. Who we are, right? So it's Shakira, it's Deidre, and we're trivia for us. But we started
00:29this because we used to go and play trivia. We love trivia. We're enthusiasts. But every
00:34time we went out, we recognized that the questions lacked diversity. We was getting everything
00:40wrong. Every question. It was such a struggle. If it wasn't about Michael B. Jordan, we didn't
00:47know what was going on. So after losing several times, we kind of looked at each other and was
00:53like, let's create our own game. Let's create a community around trivia where people could
00:58come out, learn something, start conversations, and have fun. Because Black joy matters.
01:04That's right, Deidre. So what we do is we host in-person and virtual experiences. So you
01:11at your company need a little bit of diversity and inclusion in the room. We can curate a fun
01:16game. And we also just introduce trivia for us, hip hop card game for essence festival. So
01:25it's everything hip hop celebrating the 50 years plus, right? And then we also have our OG trivia for
01:32us card game. Which you could get here today at essence fest. We are at booth 45, 15, 45, 15. Get that in your head.
01:4445, 15. That part. But it's also in Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, and a few other retailers if you're interested.
01:53But let's get into this game and what they need to know. Because we definitely got rules. Like to
01:58play with us, you got to know the rules. We're going to scan this QR code that is right there on
02:05this screen. Thank you, Jacob. Lovely transition. If you go ahead and scan, you're going to give us your
02:11name, your email. We want to know who you are. And we want to know who's going to win this experience.
02:18We got 10 questions for you today. All right. 30 seconds to answer each. But there's a kicker.
02:26You have 30 seconds to answer a question. But the quicker you answer the question, the more points
02:33you get. So what that means is go with your gut. If you're unsure, just go. What they say? Is it
02:39always like answer B or something like that? Ooh, it's always the right answer. How about that?
02:45That part. That part. All right. We also feeling very generous today for Essence Festival. We're
02:52going to do a mega point question. So each question is traditionally worth 100 points,
03:01but there will be one today that's worth 500 points. Oh, yeah. And I mean, what is it to play a game,
03:10right? If there are no prizes. There are prizes today. We need to win something. Exactly. And we
03:16have some wonderful prizes from the New Voices Entrepreneurs, filled with goodies and things
03:23that you can use and you will enjoy. So that's what's at stake today. Top three winners.
03:29Lovely. Are we ready to win something? Are we ready to play some trivia for us today?
03:33Work it up for yourself. Energy, energy. Yeah. Thanks for coming out. This is a mind game for the culture.
03:43I hear the game music going. Is the price right?
03:51We're going to give you a little countdown just to warm you up. True. Now, this is named that decade.
04:00When was Essence Magazine first published? Is it A, the 60s, B, the 70s, or C, the 80s?
04:09I don't know. I've been reading Essence all my life. Me too. I feel like it came out when I,
04:15when I came out. Burf. Burf. That is it. My grandma didn't play about no Essence. She had the subscription
04:24monthly. Okay. All right.
04:31Wondering what you all may think it is. 43% said the 70s. And you know what? 43% would be correct. It is
04:39the 70s. So the company was acquired in 1968. And the first magazine was published in May 1970.
04:50Okay. The 70s, a time of change. Giving women a voice. Right?
04:57Absolutely. All right. Who's going to see Janet tonight? Right here. All right. And Janet Jackson's
05:05song, That's the Way Love Goes, she states her love is, is it A, like a spark that starts a bonfire?
05:13Or is it like a bird with wings flying higher and higher? Or is it like a moth to a flame burnt by the fire?
05:23How does love go? Baby, that was so poetic just now, Dee. I know. I know. Thank you.
05:28Snap your fingers, y'all. Snap the fingers. Snap, snap, snap.
05:32I see somebody that got the hand raised back there. Right, right. You got to get in the game.
05:37You can still get in the game. All you have to do is scan the QR code to get in the game so you can
05:43answer the questions on your phone. But we got to find out. I think we need the audience to help us
05:49out with this one. How does love go? Can somebody help us?
05:55It's what? It's C? How it go, Cara? Like a moth to a flame burned by the fire,
06:02that's the way. That's the way love goes. My love is blind. Can't you see my desire?
06:07That's the way the bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum. You know she gonna get into it tonight,
06:13Rhythm Nation. All right, 78% of you all got that correct. Congratulations on that. Let's get into
06:21question number three. Take it away. Born in Brooklyn like us, this prominent figure was the first black
06:29woman elected to Congress to run for a major party nomination for president of the United States.
06:35We're going to name the prominent figure that paved the way for our current vice president, Kamala Harris.
06:41Is it A, Shirley Chisholm? Is it B, Fannie Lou Hammer? Or is it C, Ketanji Brown Jackson?
06:51All very powerful women. Yeah, each and every one of them,
06:54a power player for sure in politics. Ooh. Unanimously. It's almost unanimously. It's almost there.
07:05They know their history out here, right? It's Shirley Chisholm. Brooklyn native. Anybody from up top?
07:14Anybody from New York in the house? Brooklyn. All right.
07:16Okay, you quiet. We see you. We see you. It's all good. We love Nola. We always feel at home here,
07:24so thank you for having us. We ready for question number four? Are you guys ready for question number
07:32four? Okay, I heard it. Okay, here we go. Which Ohio HBCU is the first black owned and operated HBCU?
07:45Is it A, Central State University? Is it B, Wilberforce University? Or is it C, Cheney University?
07:55Put some respect on that. I mean, operated and owned. Absolutely. Any HBCU grads out here?
08:05Come on now, wrap your HBCU. Where are you from? Which one? Which one?
08:10Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh. I'm sorry. Which, which H-U? Okay.
08:16Oh! I think she's a bison, y'all. That's cute.
08:20Because we got the pirates in the house. There's a Hamptonian on stage right now.
08:25You got a Trojan right here from Virginia State University. What about you?
08:29What about you? Yeah, didn't you say? Okay, Clark Atlanta. We out here representing for the HBCUs.
08:39So many options. But the people are saying it's Wilberforce. And you're correct.
08:46It is Wilberforce University. Put some respect on their name.
08:50Okay. Let's get into question number five.
08:59On the 90s sitcom Living Single, main character Khadija James, played by rapper Queen Latifah,
09:06was the CEO of what monthly magazine? Is it A, Word on the Street? Is it B, Flava? Or is it C, Flair?
09:16What? Uh-oh. We got, we got some people yelling out their answers.
09:24No, get in the game. Scan the QR code. Yeah, there's a QR code right there.
09:28That's how you join the game. Get in. There are prizes on the line.
09:35And let's see what you all think it is.
09:39Oh! They are knowledgeable.
09:42Flavor. Flavor. How's the song go, D?
09:46In a 90s kind of world, I'm glad I got my girls. Put your hand up. What? Put your hand up.
09:53That's right. Whatever new thing to do. We got it tight. My whole girl's name is in my left.
09:58And my right is true. We dab like blue. Oh. Whoa. Whoa.
10:03I kind of knew the lyrics, didn't we? They sound good though. Y'all sound amazing.
10:10Oh my gosh. Should we show some rankings? I think people need to know where they are.
10:14Yeah, let's see where everybody's at. How y'all doing?
10:19DJ Sly in the house. Microphone checker. Mic drop, clearly.
10:25All right. Second place, we got Kyra. Is it Kyra? Kyra.
10:32Third place, Jeffrey Mott. Where you at, Jeffrey?
10:37All right. They sharing the answers. Y'all better go over here.
10:42All right. We got some honorable mentions. Rochelle Sue.
10:46Krispy Kreme. Who's Krispy Kreme? Yes, Ms. Ma'am.
10:49They're keeping it sweet over there. Proud about it. I hear that. And Candy.
10:53It's real sweet in here. Oh, I saw Manny. Is that Manny Fresh?
10:58Don't. Okay. Oh my gosh. Okay. You Manny too. Hey, Manny.
11:03Yeah. I love some Manny Fresh. I did you like that. My bad.
11:08All right. We have five more questions on the line. I think we get started.
11:17Let's do it. All right. Beyonce's, before I let you go,
11:23song was originally sung by what funk band? Is it A, the Parliament Funkadelics? Is it B,
11:31the Isley Brothers? Or is it C, Frankie Beverly and Maze, who will be performing tonight, I feel like,
11:38right? Ooh. Nice. You gotta see. You gotta see. I don't know. What's your favorite, D? The
11:46Beyonce version or the classic? I personally like the classic. Me too. I appreciate the revamp of the
11:55song and bringing it to a new generation and getting them involved, but I'm gonna take it back. Agreed.
12:02Oh, the people know they stuff out here. 81%. They said it's Frankie, Beverly,
12:11and Maze. Yes. All right. Let's go. Let's go. Question number seven. Here we go. The call
12:21letter for the international airport here is MSY, which doesn't correlate with the name of the black
12:30jazz musician. It's named after. Who's the airport named after? Come on now. I know y'all got flute in.
12:40Come on. What airport did you fly into? Do you know?
12:47I see some of y'all. They're all laughing at that.
12:52This looks like she ready for a good trip. Yes. Got her carry-on bag.
12:56A hundred percent say Louis Armstrong. My goodness. Give it up for yourself. A hundred
13:06percent is correct. Now y'all got to clap it up for yourselves better than that. Let's go.
13:16Oh, they jamming today. I'm not mad at it. All right. We got question number eight.
13:24All right. So SWV gets so weak in the knees that they could hardly do what? Is it A? They
13:34could hardly wait. Is it B? They could hardly speak. Or is it C? They could hardly stand. I don't know.
13:42If you get weak in the knees, I think you won't be standing. You just be like...
13:46I'm gonna be standing tonight when SWV performs though. Okay. I hear that. I'm gonna have my good
13:52shoes on this time though. Get them. Maybe. All right. I'm wondering what you all think it was.
14:03Ninety percent. Just takes your breath away, doesn't it? Right. Can y'all guys help me out with finishing
14:09this lyric? I get so weak in the knees. I can hardly speak. I lose all control. And something takes over
14:22me. And a day it is so amazing. It's not a day. I want you to stay with me. Stay by my side. I swallow
14:33my pride. My pride. Your love is so sweet. It knocks me right off of my feet.
14:43Can you explain why your love makes me weak? Why they give us a microphone, girl? You know we're gonna cut up.
14:50We're gonna get some weak. We tried Coco. We tried Coco. Lord. Yes, the answer is speak. Speak.
14:58The girl can't speak. Absolutely. That's a good time. I'm thinking we should probably see
15:06the rankings. Yeah. Okay. DJ Slide said it's my game.
15:16Second place is Kyra. Third, we got Jeffrey Mott. They teamed up on y'all. I don't know. I don't know
15:22how y'all feel about that. Honorable mentions. Dr. Leck. Tondra. Joe Boe. Lonnie. And Lonnie's in the house.
15:34Okay. But the game's not over. And we have a... Meg. Meg. Oh my goodness. I went to say
15:47bonus and it came out. 500 points. So keep your head in the game. There's still a chance that you
15:54can move up in the rankings. Let's do it.
16:01All right. Here we go. Megapoint question. The movie Girls Trip highlighted the black joy
16:07and community that is celebrated at Essence Festival. Starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah,
16:13Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith. What was the name of the FAMU crew of besties in the movie?
16:21Is it A. The Flossy Posse? Or is it B. The Bossy Posse? Or is it C. The Cutie Crew?
16:31I mean, they're all cute, right? I don't know. Did anybody watch the movie to prep for Essence Festival?
16:38Oh, that would be a thing. That would be a thing.
16:43All right. 92%. I think it's Flossy Posse. And it is Flossy.
16:54Nice job. Bossy and cute. I think we need to take a look at those rankings again though.
16:59One more time. Why not? One more time.
17:02Hey, Jazz.
17:08Has stepped into the ranking.
17:11Fourth play. Jeffrey, you went down. What's up? What's up? It's all right. It's all right.
17:15We got one more question. He hasn't watched the movie yet.
17:18Got you. You got to get him to watch the movie, girl.
17:21Leisha, Toya, Val, we see you. We got one last question.
17:29Let's do it.
17:30Yeah, you take him out with this question.
17:33All right. Let's see. All right. So this is all about math. Let's see if the math is mapping.
17:39Barack Obama has graced Essence Magazine cover six times. Multiply that number times the number
17:48of years he served in office. So you got to take the six times that he was on the cover,
17:57multiply that by the number of years he served in office. Let's see if the math is mapping.
18:03They looking a little stressed. And do not use the calculator.
18:07No. No.
18:08Do not use Google. The Google-lator. Don't do that.
18:12You got it. We believe in you.
18:16I see some finger action. I see some people scratching their heads, right?
18:22Wow. So many answers. We got a lot of answers.
18:26It look like a lot of raw ones, too. Absolutely.
18:30I don't like that for y'all, but you know, it's okay. We're going to work it out.
18:33All right. But it's only one answer.
18:35One answer. It is 48. So you wanted to multiply the six times eight, getting you 48.
18:46Nice. All right. We had a great time with this trivia experience. How did y'all,
18:53how did y'all feel about this?
18:54Yes. Okay. And I mean, if you like this, don't forget, come over the boot 4515. That's where you
19:01can find us and you can get our games as well. I think so.
19:09Okay. Anybody interested in gaining some extra points? Okay. If we can have three people just come
19:19out. This is the three. All right. I see you over there in the red shirt. We see you.
19:24Yeah. Take the stairs right over here to your right-hand side. Please be careful coming up the stairs.
19:35Hey, hey, hey. Welcome, welcome. No, come on. Come on over here. I swear we don't buy it.
19:41Y'all just let us know your names and then where you're from.
19:45Uh, Tondra Williams, Houston. Tracy Gilbert, Arlington, Virginia.
19:52Hi, I'm Natalie. I'm representing Guyana. Okay. GT in the house. All right. But what we really
19:59want to know is if you can dance. That is a thing. So we're going to...
20:05So you think you could dance the trivia for us version. That's right. Put the bag down.
20:11500 extra points for whomever wins this experience right now.
20:20Listen to what's going to go on though. Break it down for them. Yeah. We're going to name a dance
20:26to you. And if you know how to do it, then you go on to the next round. We could do that. Okay. Okay.
20:35Are we ready for this first one? Who's going first?
20:42Okay. Red shirt. Lady in the red. Yeah. Lady in red.
20:47Do you know how to do the Harlem Shake?
20:51Do your best. Do your best Harlem Shake.
20:52Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey.
20:56Hey. Nice job. That's accurate. That's accurate. That's accurate.
21:01Do you got to dance for them? Absolutely. So you're up next. And if you could do the
21:08Roger Rabbit.
21:15Okay. Wait. She said give us a broom. Give us a broom.
21:17Give us a broom.
21:18Before you know it, you're following the fiend.
21:20Hey. Hey. Hey.
21:22Don't hurt them. Don't hurt them.
21:24Get it. Back it up.
21:25Hey.
21:26All right. For our young lady that had to throw her bag down to the side.
21:37Um, let's get it. Let's get, um, uh, a sea walk.
21:43It's a sea walk.
21:44Then watch your eyeballs swell.
21:46Got you out of trouble.
21:47Stay dumb.
21:47Hey. Oh, hey.
21:48They not like the West Coast.
21:50They like the West Coast.
21:52They not like the West Coast.
21:54Oh, my gosh.
21:55I almost feeling like maybe everybody is getting an extra 500 points.
22:00They are great.
22:01I think so.
22:02How do you feel, D?
22:05Yes. Uh, yes.
22:06They all did a fabulous job.
22:10All right.
22:11Thank you so much, ladies, for coming up.
22:13Yeah.
22:14They're playing along with us.
22:15Y'all give it up for them.
22:16Give it up for them.
22:19I loved it.
22:21See, you gotta take up space, sis.
22:24I like that.
22:25Sometimes.
22:26So, I'm gonna add these points on here.
22:41I'm gonna add the points.
22:42Then we're gonna figure out this leaderboard.
22:46Who's winning?
22:46Who's taking home a prize today?
22:48Let's go.
22:50All right.
22:52Let's see where we are, then.
22:55Let's check it out.
22:56Let's check it out.
22:58Okay, Jazz.
23:00Our first place winner.
23:02Our first place winner.

25:15Now, what about you?
25:17What does Essence mean to you?
25:18Uh, celebrating with good, beautiful black people.
25:24Amen, agree.
25:25What about you?
25:26Let me say the same thing.
25:28This is my first Essence Festival and just being around so many beautiful black people,
25:32beautiful black entrepreneurs, success, all of it has been wonderful.
25:37Oh, I love that, amazing.
25:40And then for you, what's your favorite part about Essence Festival?
25:43I love the inclusion of kind of just all of voting and then also health, hair,
25:50some like beauty, all of the ways that they're able to tie that in so everybody has a piece
25:54where they can go and kind of figure out their little stitch, so.
25:57Absolutely, there is so much to do at Essence Festival.
26:00What about you?
26:01What's your favorite part?
26:02Um, I think the vendors as well as the social economic piece, which is all the way in the
26:10back, but for me it's the vendors and a lot of the smaller vendors as well, so.
26:17Fantastic, yes, and I think a lot of you all touched on the vendors in the marketplace and
26:24these gift bags were donated by New Voices entrepreneurs, so in addition to taking this
26:29today, we asked you to follow those entrepreneurs, look at their stories, support them in other
26:34ways as well, so thank you all for playing along and we're going to go ahead and leave out.
26:40And visit us at our booth as well.
26:43We're right there, you see those lights right there?
26:464515 trivia for us, pick up a card game, come Kiki with us, we'll be there.
