00:00Hey, how's everybody doing?
00:01I'm seeing some beautiful people, beautiful people, beautiful hair.
00:05Oh my God.
00:05Hi.
00:06So my name is Jay Gurley, and I'm here with my good friend Alberto with L'Oreal Paris
00:10in partnership with Right to Be.
00:11And we're here to help you feel more confident tackling issues of harassment.
00:15My name is Alberto, and I'm from Miami, Florida.
00:17I don't know if there's any Miami people here.
00:19It's 305 in the house.
00:21I'll see you, I'll see you.
00:22I'm so excited to be here because I really care about this issue.
00:25When it comes to street harassment, it's just not acceptable.
00:27And we're going to talk a little bit about tools, but, you know, it looks, we know what
00:32it looks like.
00:32We've seen it, right?
00:33It sounds like catcalls, name calling, maybe making comments about somebody's body in public.
00:37Yeah, raise your hand if you've ever been harassed for looking as good as you look today in this
00:41crowd.
00:41Oh my God.
00:42Okay.
00:42I already know this section right here, especially.
00:45Raise your hand if you've seen it, if you witness someone being harassed on the street.
00:49Yeah.
00:50So all of us have some kind of connection to this issue, and we have a really cool toolkit
00:54we want to talk to you about.
00:55Yeah, we call them our five Ds of bystander intervention by right to be, and I'm going
01:00to do a little demonstration to show you how to use them in action, okay?
01:04So our first D is distract, and it means exactly what it says.
01:07It's create a distraction, and you can, you know, for me, that can be a lot of things.
01:13I like to serve face.
01:14I like to think that's very distracting.
01:16I feel like if you just give a good, you know, just a little, you know, bat an eye
01:22or something.
01:23Now, I get it.
01:24Not everybody is, like, attention-seeking as I am, but you can find other habits and
01:28things.
01:29You can ask a question, or you can drop one of them loud water bottles.
01:32Yeah, you can do that.
01:33You can ask for directions.
01:35Yeah.
01:35And the main point is to get the attention off of the person being harassed and directed,
01:39like, to you.
01:39It's a very selfless act, and it disrupts any need of the harassment.
01:43Our second D is my favorite one, delegate, which means kind of get somebody else to do
01:49it, okay?
01:50And you can delegate to anyone.
01:51I love to delegate to my good friend here, Alberto.
01:54You can delegate to a person of authority in the room, the sound booth, or you can delegate
01:58to anyone.
01:59And the main point is to get as many eyes on the situation as possible and take away
02:04that harasser's power.
02:06And now, our third D, which we can all do because we all have our phones, is document.
02:11And this is exactly what I said.
02:13Create a visual documentation of what the harasser is doing.
02:17No cuts, no edits, and you want to be able to provide that footage over to the person being
02:21harassed so that they can use it however they would like.
02:24Yeah.
02:25We want to make people feel empowered, you know?
02:27And so, the next two options in the five Ds is delay, and delay sounds like, hey, are
02:31you okay?
02:32Like, after it happened, we go up to the person and we say, we noticed what this person just
02:36said.
02:36I'm not okay with it.
02:37You want me to walk with you?
02:38Like, I'm here with you.
02:40And sometimes, a person may feel really alone in a space, like, when that happens.
02:45And so, if you walk up to them and you say, I just saw that.
02:48It's not okay.
02:48They're going to feel really good.
02:50The last one here is direct, and direct is exactly as it sounds.
02:54What does direct sound like?
02:55Direct sounds like, I know you didn't just do that.
02:58Right.
02:58That's not okay.
02:59Right?
02:59You see me standing here?
03:00Yeah.
03:01Y'all see that?
03:02We're not going to do that.
03:03You know, I'm not going to play the games.
03:04I'm not going to distract.
03:05I'm going to tell you what you're doing is weird.
03:06It's wrong.
03:07And it's not going to happen, not with me in this presence.
03:10Let's do a little review.
03:11What do you think?
03:12Yeah, we can do a little pop quiz, see what you guys retain from our five Ds.
03:16So, raise your hand if you find yourself, you're going to be a little bit, you're going
03:21to distract.
03:22That's your one to do.
03:24I see one right here.
03:25Some folks over here.
03:26I see a couple.
03:27What about delegate?
03:28What about delegate?
03:30Just delegate.
03:31Okay.
03:32Get somebody else to do it.
03:32I see.
03:33What about document?
03:34Who would-
03:35You're going to record.
03:37Yes, record.
03:37Yes.
03:38Yes.
03:38Share the footage.
03:39Okay.
03:40I like that.
03:40What about delay?
03:41Who's going to check in and be like, girl, I'm sorry.
03:43Like, that was wrong.
03:44Who's going to check in after?
03:45See some check-ins up here.
03:46We like that.
03:47Yeah.
03:48And direct.
03:48And who, where are my nini leaks?
03:50Who's going to tell it like it is?
03:51Straight up?
03:52Yeah.
03:52That's my go-to, too.
03:54Because we-
03:54I said what I said.
03:56I said what I said, and that's not been applied.
03:59Listen, folks, we're so excited to be here.
04:01It's the second year we get to do this in this space, and we're just so grateful we get
04:05to come in a beautiful space like this and talk to you about this.
04:08Check out our website, right2beat.org.
04:09Get trained.
04:10We got free training.
04:11Share this with your loved ones.
04:12If you got people in your life you care about.
04:14Spread the 5Ds.
04:16They're really useful and really easy to apply day-to-day.
04:19All right.
04:20That's all.
