00:00Hey Essence, G.U. Make some noise, you're having a good time. Essence tonight. Hey, y'all.
00:05Oh my God. This room smells so good. I'm seeing so many beautiful faces.
00:09And I hope we keep the energy going as we talk about how we can step into our power
00:12and learn how to protect ourselves and those of us around us.
00:15My name is Jay Gurley, and I'm here with my good friend Alberto
00:18in partnership with L'Oreal Paris and the nonprofit Right to Be.
00:21And we're here to help you feel more confident tackling issues of harassment.
00:26I'm so excited to be here, Jay. This is the second year we do this,
00:29and I'm Alberto. By the way, I'm from Miami, Florida.
00:31Is there anyone from Miami here? Hey. Hey, boo-boo. Yay.
00:35I just want to say a few things.
00:37So street harassment is something that I've spent a lot of time thinking about,
00:40and we have the solution in a really easy way.
00:43We know it's unwanted. It sometimes sounds like animal noises.
00:46It sounds like somebody whistling, saying things that make folks uncomfortable,
00:49and it affects people from all different communities, but specifically women, right?
00:54Women of color, trans women, folks in the LGBTQIA community.
00:58And we're here today because we have a really cool toolkit.
01:00Absolutely. And we want to do a quick little survey.
01:03Raise your hand if you've seen street harassment happening
01:05or if you've experienced it for being the baddie that you are.
01:09Okay?
01:09See you.
01:10Okay.
01:11And so we have a simple, easy five-step solution
01:14to help you be a more effective bystander when instances like that happen.
01:17And we call them our five Ds of bystander intervention.
01:20And I will lovely demonstrate them for you.
01:23I like it. Let's do it. Let's see it.
01:25Okay. So our first D to help be a better bystander is distract.
01:30And it means exactly like I said, create a distraction.
01:35Now, I like to keep it really classy.
01:37I don't do too much.
01:38But the main point of the whole exercise is to, you know,
01:43get the attention off of the person being harassed and onto you.
01:46It's a very selfish act, and it's a very, you know, way for you to, you know,
01:51create a distraction.
01:53You can also ask for directions, ask for a phone charger.
01:56Of course, you don't have to pop into a whole squat like me,
01:58but that's what I think is visually distracting.
02:01Our second D is delegate.
02:04And this is where you, I like to call, get somebody else to do it.
02:09Get somebody else.
02:10I like to delegate to my good friend Alberto right here.
02:13I got to back.
02:13Delegate to a person of authority.
02:15You can delegate to someone outside the room like my good friend Chiari out there.
02:19You can delegate to anybody.
02:21And the main point is to get a bunch of attention on onto the person
02:25who is causing harassment and take away their power.
02:27Yeah, that's right.
02:28Yeah, so we have a couple more options I want to share with you.
02:30The next one is delay.
02:32And I like delay a lot because that's about checking in with the person.
02:35And when you see it happening, you say, hey, are you okay?
02:37I just saw what that person said.
02:38It's not cool.
02:39Do you want me to walk with you?
02:40And that feels really good because people feel supported and they feel seen in that moment.
02:44It feels safe.
02:45It's not like, oh, my God, this happened and no one said anything, right?
02:48Like, no, I'm here.
02:48I saw it.
02:49I don't like it either, right?
02:50Absolutely.
02:51And you skipped one, girl.
02:53I did.
02:53I did document.
02:54We want to document.
02:55We have our third D is document.
02:57And everyone can do this with our phones like how we're doing right now.
03:00This create a visual documentation of the harassment happening.
03:03We don't want to put any edits, no cuts, no TikTok sounds.
03:06That's right.
03:06Just a clean shot so that way you can hand the video footage over to the person who was
03:11being harassed and they can use that in whatever footage that they would like.
03:15We want them to feel empowered, right?
03:17And so that's the point we want to make there.
03:19The last one here is direct and that's exactly what it sounds like saying to the person who's
03:24doing the harassment, hey, that's not cool.
03:26I don't like the way you're talking to that person in that moment.
03:29Hey, I see you.
03:31It's uncalled for and it's not for the fly.
03:33Not with me in the room and not with me and my girls in the room at all.
03:36Exactly.
03:36Shall we do a quick review, Jay?
03:38What do you think?
03:39I think we should do a little pop quiz to see how much the girls remember.
03:42Let's do it.
03:42Okay, let's do it.
03:43So our first D.
03:44Raise your hand if you would be more likely to be a distractor.
03:47You would distract.
03:50Okay, we got like one.
03:52Okay.
03:52There's like one over there.
03:53I get it.
03:54Hey, girl.
03:54It's a little bold.
03:55Okay.
03:56Our second D, who's going to delegate?
03:57Get somebody else to do it.
03:58Let's see some delegation here.
03:59Get someone else to do.
04:00Okay, we see it.
04:01Get a friend.
04:02You know, when it comes to delegate, we think about people get their loud mouth friend.
04:08Yes.
04:08Like, if you have a loud mouth friend, raise your hand.
04:10I love that.
04:10If you're not raising your hand, there's a chance you might be the loud mouth friend.
04:15You know, that happens, right?
04:17I love that.
04:18And then our third D we have is document.
04:21Who's more like, I'll record.
04:23That seems like the more D that you would use.
04:25I see that here.
04:25I love that.
04:26Over here in this corner.
04:26I like that.
04:27And our fourth D.
04:29Yes.
04:30Delay.
04:31Delay.
04:31Who's, um...
04:32Would you check in?
04:33The last one we're checking with the person?
04:34Check in with the friend after the harassment.
04:35You know, sit with them.
04:36Take some time.
04:37Possibly.
04:38Oh, I see one here in the back.
04:39I like that.
04:40I love it.
04:41And now for the one we love.
04:42And where are my nene leaks in the building?
04:44Who's going to tell the like it is?
04:45Who's going to...
04:45Yeah.
04:46Who's direct?
04:46I see some direct over here in the front.
04:48I love it.
04:49I love it.
04:50Because we don't really got time for that.
04:51Yeah, exactly.
04:52Thank you, Jay.
04:53Listen, folks.
04:54We want to invite you to visit our website, right2be.org.
04:56We call the organization Right2Be because Right2Be is safe.

05:13Thank you so much.
05:15Thanks, folks.
