00:00Well, we're joined now live by our correspondent in Jerusalem, Noga Tarnopolsky.
00:05Hi, Noga. Good to have you with us. Thanks for joining us.
00:08Can you give us an idea, what do these measures mean?
00:14Great to see you, Angela. Look, principally, this is a statement of intention.
00:19We must remember that Prime Minister Netanyahu has entered what is supposed to be an electoral
00:24year in Israel, though elections haven't yet been set, a date hasn't been set. And Netanyahu,
00:31ahead of what is expected to be a difficult trip to Washington, D.C., where very likely he will
00:37be forced to accept Trump ceasefire terms for Gaza, which for now include Hamas staying in place,
00:46and also negotiations with Iran that for now do not seem to be going in the direction that Israel
00:53had wished, Netanyahu handed his ultra-right-wing base and his ultra-right-wing ministers some red meat
01:02in the form of what is basically soft-peddling annexation of the West Bank. What the Security
01:08Cabinet voted on are basically measures which, if put into place, will allow Jews basically to
01:17appropriate to purchase under very beneficial terms Palestinian lands to continue to take over
01:25Palestinian national lands. And it puts Israel squarely in violation of the Oslo courts, of which
01:33the United States is a guarantor. So it is not yet a done deal, not only until the Israeli full
01:40cabinet votes on it. And as you said, the military commander accepts it. But Donald Trump is going
01:45to have to express himself on this as well. Now, one of the Israeli opposition leaders has accused,
01:53says this is all about the prime minister trying to cover up security failures on October the 7th.
01:59Tell us more about that.
02:01Yes. And so this is a very dramatic development of the last 20 minutes or so. The leader of the
02:08opposition, Yair Lapid, has filed a formal complaint accusing the prime minister of forging security
02:17documents. In other words, forging classified documents to benefit his own narrative, his attempt
02:25to cover up his responsibility for October 7th. Because the leader of the opposition has filed an
02:32official request with the Defense Ministry Council for to open an investigation and says that this kind
02:40of tendentious editing of documents, in other words, forging security documents for his own benefit
02:47constitutes, I'm quoting now, a violation of the Official Secrets Act. This really does complicate matters
02:54very much for Netanyahu, who has already been bashed in the Israeli public space in recent days
03:01for lying, for putting out an argument that was very easy to puncture. But this formal accusation
03:08really does give a complete other panorama to Netanyahu's possibly legal predicament.
