00:00This is a story of how I lived in an understair shoe cupboard for five months and trust me,
00:04this place would have made Harry Potter jealous. Because this was about three years ago and I was
00:08living and working in Bristol at the time. However, my house tendency was ending and I
00:11knew I wanted to move to Australia in the new year, about six months away. I still wanted to
00:15stay in Bristol so I could still keep my job and keep working, make some sweet, sweet cash.
00:20Basically, I just didn't want to sign another one year lease for a new house. So I tried to
00:23look for sublets and basically just could not find anything. And it kept getting closer and
00:28close and I was like joking about it to my mates at work. And one of my friends like as a joke
00:32was like, oh, you can stay in my shoe cupboard if you want. And I was like, oh yeah, whatever.
00:36Anyway, it got like to like a week before I was going to move out and I was like, bro,
00:40how big is your shoe cupboard? So I went over to hers after work one day and we cleared out the
00:46cupboard and it fit just enough length for me to lie down and a little bit of room at the front.
00:49So then I drafted up this little notes contract here. And you might think that's a lot, but like
00:53the rest of the flat was really nice. It was in like a really nice area of Bristol.
00:58And I was basically just paying like a third of bills and a little bit extra.
01:02I thought I was to just do this for like a month max while I found a sublet and we thought it was
01:06just quite funny. So we've got like a single mattress from Ikea. It fit just about with the
01:10sides curled up. I had a duffel bag with all my clothes in. So I knew I was moving to Australia
01:15anyway, so I just sold everything I owned. So I had one duffel bag. There was two shelves,
01:20which I had some clothes stacked on. And then I had my computer in the living room and then that was it.
01:27That was all I needed. Anyway, I ended up staying there for five months because it just worked so
01:32well. I was paying fuck all. They're getting cheaper rent. And like, we just made this,
01:37there was three of us, me and two housemates and we just ended up becoming really good friends.
01:42And I look back on that period of my life so fondly. And it was such a pivotal character arc
01:49moment living in that cupboard. Honestly, it was pretty humbling. It was pretty cozy. I could,
01:53it was a flat so I could hear the people above like crystal clear. It was this like old Russian
01:58couple who would always have like domestics and I'd be sat there like, okay, I'm not supposed to be
02:03hearing this. And there was like maybe two or three times where one of the girls had like her
02:08mates over and it was like a bit awkward because you can't really just go and chill in your room
02:13when you live in a cupboard. But apart from that, it was so much fun. So I ended up staying,
02:19I ended up staying for like five months until I was about to move to Australia. I got my parents
02:23to pick me up and I told them I was staying in my mate's spare room. My mum came to help. I was
02:28like, oh mum, come help me with my stuff. She walks in, sees this little corridor,
02:33fucking chimney sweet room and just freaks out. She's like, what the fuck? Are you sleeping?
02:39Anyway, I have so many other things about this little cupboard. So if you have any questions,
02:43did I bring anyone back? What did it smell like? How did I get out when the door locked from the
02:48outside and not the inside? Let me know and I'll do another video about the cupboard days.
