00:00Oh hello. It's week six, there are seven potters left and this week they are making a tagine pot.
00:11So naturally I got all inspired to make a lovely meal.
00:15Oh hi Siobhan.
00:16Hi Reg.
00:17Oh a tagine lovely. Can I help?
00:19Oh yes please. If you could chop these onions that would be great. Very helpful.
00:30Oh it's a beautiful porridge. I get it.
00:35Welcome to the Great Pottery Throwdown.
00:38It is emotional.
00:41Last time. Panic.
00:43The potters took a souvenir shopping.
00:45I love a bit of tat.
00:46At the seaside.
00:47Made a couple but they're not quite right.
00:50Finn served up picture perfect perfection.
00:52This is the kind of thing that you'd see in a souvenir shop.
00:55Coming round for a high five.
00:57Winning his second potter of the week.
00:59I got a high five.
01:02Although Bill had the holiday blues.
01:04You've got a bit of a crack around the outside of your plate.
01:07It was Andrew.
01:08I knew.
01:09Who said bon voyage to the pottery.
01:11Well I've had so much fun, I've not laughed this much.
01:14You're so inspiring, you're so creative, you're so weird.
01:29In the spinning world of makers.
01:32We're all in the room to make it.
01:35So just start up the fire.
01:38It's down to the wire.
01:40We're all in the mountains.
01:41I'll do it.
01:47our Feven remaining potters are back at the wheel for their hardest challenge yet.
01:52I think it's going to look really lovely.
01:54Yeah.
01:55to test every inch of the potter's throwing ability week six just a bit of clay what could
02:05go wrong i'm a little bit terrified of terracotta let's hope it's not traumatic it's only terracotta
02:12i'm acting really excited about the terracotta but it's a little bit more difficult to work with
02:17it's gonna be interesting day today because there's so many things to do it's gonna test
02:21this all today i think i'm apprehensive about this one it feels big there's lots of like
02:27different things have to go together
02:31oh god
02:34welcome back potters this week for your main make challenge the judges would like you to make
02:40a tagine pot and a coal brazier just like the traditional north african pots you'll be using
02:46terracotta clay your tagine should really follow that classic shape of a conical lid and a wide
02:53shallow bowl proportion wise it should be as tall as it is wide but big enough to comfortably serve
02:59four people yes and we like our tagine here don't we so make sure there's a enough space for four
03:06healthy portions i take two the brazier is a stand used for cooking and given that that tagine is going
03:12to be very hot and very heavy these pieces need to be extremely stable okay potters you have three
03:20hours to make your pot and brazier and your time starts now potters get potting
03:30oh that's way way too much not only is this a large scale technical build
03:36it's the first time the potters have been set a terracotta base challenge it's always a bit of an
03:42adjustment terracotta terracotta it actually feels nice different story when it's on the wheel and
03:48you give it too much water but across that bridge when we get to it with terracotta you've got to
03:52work slightly more efficiently you get into the sort of rhythm of making things quite quickly
03:58rich to jeans back at the wheel it's week six we're ramping it up there's so much technical nuance in
04:06this completely we've asked our potters to make a large wide shallow bowl this iconic lid to fit
04:12inside and then the brazier with coals in there to cook what's in your tagine this challenge is a bit
04:18of a curveball for our potters it's about understanding the clay the material itself working with terracotta
04:25is like no other clay yeah it doesn't like too much water being added to the surface of it whilst it's
04:31being thrown terracotta can be really challenging to work with anyway coupled with the fact that these
04:36pieces are being raw glazed it presents a huge challenge when we say raw glaze we mean one firing
04:42because that clay is raw when you apply the glazes if they put too much on at a time it could cause
04:48cracks or it could cause the clay to just flop all together that fit between the lid and the bowl is
04:53what keeps all of that moisture inside during the cooking process it's integral to the function of the
04:59tagine when we come to that decorating stage i want to see some really colorful geometric patterns on
05:03there with that scraffito technique it's such a multi-faceted challenge they're laying down one
05:09color over a different colored base clay and then scratching back through that to reveal the clay color
05:14underneath once you scratch through the surface there's no going back absolutely it's entirely
05:19reliant on getting that scratching through really crisp and that will come down to how thickly that
05:24color is applied and we want to be able to use these i'm getting hungry yeah me too actually
05:32hi lovely hello we're measuring a place this is a good stash tell me about your design
05:38so my design is called feast and fan so fan means art in arabic okay it's basically artwork isn't it a
05:46tagine i would think this is right up your street it is i mean terracotta i'm trying not to saturate it
05:52it does need that kind of respect yeah it does just don't want to annoy it i feel like it's a bit
05:56of a like a teenager oh you're getting all weird again you're getting pottery weird again no it
06:01understands elham's designs will be from the traditional moroccan color palette of blue yellow
06:07and turquoise and there are not to tajines she's seen while visiting marrakesh so i've been to morocco a
06:13few times you literally find markets and markets of tajines people making them literally like throwing
06:19them on the floor just everything's out it's magical elham might be keen to capture the food
06:25and culture of north africa i've never been to africa all i know is it's hot but bill's taking his
06:31inspiration from the heat my tagine is based off the sun because obviously it's very hot in africa
06:37and i wanted to do some like little goat heads on the side of the brazier because obviously goat meat's
06:43used in quite a lot of traditional yeah yeah cooking okay along with his goats bill's design
06:49will reflect the heat and vibrant colors of north africa and he's not taking any risks with his
06:54throwing how are you feeling about that wide shallow bowl i'm making two just in case so okay yeah like
07:01a spare base there's a lot to get done there's a lot to get done i'm going to start with the the bowl
07:06of the uh tagine all of the potters are throwing their tagine bowls first so that i can get the
07:13right measurement for my lid to fit into it when i make the lids the lid's going to sit on and adjust
07:18sizes if i need to as terracotta is naturally porous it takes a lot of water until it doesn't want anymore
07:24and it comes off in like lumps it looks like chocolate but it isn't chocolate in chocolate
07:30the tastiest kind it can become oversaturated it's tricky getting used to how much water it likes
07:38and how much it doesn't and collapse it's getting a little bit on the floppy side i don't want the
07:44top of the bowl to flop can i get four chicken breasts in there no chicken thighs is what i feel
07:51like would go in this better the judges have asked for a tagine that's big enough to feed four people
07:56the flavor of the food just circulates because there's nowhere for it to escape and true moroccan
08:01flavors are the inspiration for emily's design it's inspired by spices used in north african
08:08cooking mostly most notably the seed pods looks like you've got a galleried base i wanted to
08:16follow the form of the lid pushing the gallery out and then flopping the rim over right and it worked
08:21great in practice at home but then earlier i just managed to flop the rim over too much so yeah
08:26yeah we're learning yeah this is it learning all the time emily's brazier will be decorated with berber
08:34symbols traditionally seen on textiles and jewelry in north africa and her tagine will be decorated
08:40with the shapes of seeds and spices do i need to crush some seeds so you smell them and get them in the
08:46right yeah wouldn't that be nice lovely do you like cooking moroccan food i can't say i've done a
08:52huge amount of moroccan food will you after this um i'd love to use this actually yeah oh well well
08:57i'll leave you to it looking good thank you thanks i'm just about to get in the drawing room potters the
09:03drying room is open huh it's uh it's as hot as north africa in there
09:11this part now is important i've got to get a gallery in the gallery is a crucial feature that
09:20has to be added to their bowls for the lid to sit in i'm trying to keep the rim thicker this needs to
09:25come out a bit more oh i am splitting my rim to create a gallery for the lid to sit on can't be
09:30letting that steam seep out if they don't create a tight seal the tagine won't be functional it's
09:37literally one wrong touch and you've absolutely messed it up nearly there you've got the ruler out
09:44i'm not a fan of measuring no i'm like oh my gosh it has to be exact does it have to be exact is
09:50there yeah because i need my lid to fit the whole idea is that the condensation helps with
09:54the heating of the food and things like that you can't have it escaping your steam no okay i get it
10:07i don't know there was a downstairs in there potters that's one hour gone gone really need to like
10:20my face i could scratch back out throw in that lid i'm just a bit apprehensive keith and rich are
10:27looking for traditional tall cone-shaped tagine lids oh my god and the potters need to ensure the bottom
10:35lip fits the base that conical shape all the steam comes up and drops back down into the food that
10:41shape it's so important that's a funny looking egg cup hey tell us about your design my design is
10:48inspired by my trek in the atlas mountains which are in Morocco to the summit tube cow it's the second
10:55highest peak in africa wow and the last night we camped out and i didn't know so many stars existed you
11:02know so it's blues and blacks were amazing so you're challenging a real feeling absolutely very
11:08strong feeling yeah navid will depict the night sky he saw on his moroccan mountain trek and the
11:14rests his tagine will sit upon are a nod to souvenirs he brought home from his trip looks very very
11:20complicated there's actually not that many colors i was going to use orange glaze but i think i might just
11:25carve out the sun out of the end instead so use the natural color of the clay and the feet are inspired by
11:31my shoes i got from morocco yeah i've got hair like they make me smile every time i put them on yeah
11:36they'll hopefully be keeping up the uh tagine do you own a tagine don't my mom's got one i haven't got
11:41one no about six weeks ago i made the soup tureen practically an expert tureens to jeans you know it's
11:48all the same that's called the whole thing off yeah it's very hard to get this sort of tureen shape
11:56looking right i'm just trying to get it more as a cylinder and then flare it out i just need to
12:03bring it out about another centimeter all around the lid is quite challenging to get it right
12:08oh no i think i've probably lost it oh god i'll just start again on this
12:14take two while naveed starts his lid again getting my tagine lid lid with my wobbly shaky hands and
12:26harrod is looking closer to home for her scruffito inspiration my great-grandmother she used to mosaic
12:33walls in her garden that's her her name's winnie watkins she's not here anymore but her garden's all
12:38broken pottery so it's all kind of like a bit more contemporary but still traditionally rooted
12:45anne harrod's design will combine memories of her great-grandmother's garden in south wales
12:50and the mosaic patterns of north africa and how are you incorporating any scruffito work so
12:57i love scruffito so this i'm really excited for this so i'm going to be stamping all of the tiles
13:02in sponges that i'm going to make and then i'm going to carve between them all to highlight all those
13:07shapes right i always think it's just so hard when you've got something conical shape because
13:11essentially the decoration has to get smaller exactly as it goes up good luck with it it's definitely
13:16ambitious well it should be ambitious for a week six now it feels like a step up a marvet oh i don't
13:22know what that means because i don't speak approaches thank you yeah
13:27get in a vicious circle so i'll just take a few minutes when it comes to a point like this it's
13:38very tricky to keep it on center because all the center is on this tiny little thing here now and
13:43you don't want to do too much because it'll alter the rim i've done this three times but i just can't
13:48get it any bigger but no no that's that's the better one that's better what's your measurement
13:53here just under 24. nice yeah oh god that looks tiny didn't it look tiny oh bloody hell it's as hot
14:04as north africa here it is she'll do have you got one that you're pleased with it's a bit small at one
14:11point i thought i'm not gonna have anything so yeah you did that's good you know you just take out
14:18your anger on that and i'll yeah potters you're halfway through oh my god halfway so much to do
14:29that's a nice load healer it's good enough yeah i'm just going for the brazier time is of the essence
14:36the brazier is the stand used for cooking so there needs to be plenty of room for the
14:41coals the brazier is going to be a bit heavier than my actual tagine you know hot coals you can't
14:47risk that kind of being accidentally knocked over so i'm going to attach a foot ring on roll out
14:52a sausage of clay for elevation and air circulation the potters need to add a stand i'm just trying
14:58to have it wide and shallow just for the brazier to sit on i'm just going to sculpt three goat heads
15:04i love goats because obviously you know billy goat that's me yeah i wouldn't say they're necessarily
15:10the simplest of designs and with all the throwing of the tagine pieces the rests are a chance to show
15:15off their sculpting skills it's based on a bird called the red star which is native to north africa
15:21and then i'm featuring those birds as the little supports on my brazier as well the main designs
15:27based on moroccan tiles pretty similar to the tattoos that i've got you know symmetrical
15:33finn's tagine will also be glazed with the colors of red start birds and contrasting turquoise
15:39and he's using his illustration skills to help apply his decoration
15:44i'm just intrigued how you get intricate designs on with graffiti i use macabre paper that i use for
15:49work anyway use those as a template and then i'll graffiti in the lines okay i tend to tattoo quite
15:53a lot of geometric design pieces anyway so just stick that on a tagine and you're there you're laughing
16:00got to get there so the plan is for those saffron flowers to be kind of quite rough
16:05because they need to be quite strong but kaylee is going for a more organic approach i've based mine
16:11in marrakesh there was a lovely beautiful college there that had the most beautiful entrance way
16:17i've got some tiles and motifs that i've taken from that kaylee's taking her inspiration from
16:23architectural themes in morocco and her design will include colorful floral motifs
16:28and these are going on top of the brazier yes chunky they'll have to be it's got to be user
16:34friendly hasn't it yeah they could be a bit vulnerable on the edge and how are you throwing
16:38something this sizable this is the biggest thing i've ever thrown oh really yeah so that was the
16:42tureen week one was the biggest thing right and now this feel the fear
16:50potters oh no one hour left god one hour left blimey
16:57i'm not gonna let it panic me it's a bit too small and they're too small but i just panicked
17:03you know what can i do with all their main elements thrown i might get my tagine lid out i've
17:09got to throw a knob on top as well oh my god there's actually quite a lot to do the potters
17:14can return to their lids so they can finish refining them this is too wet really but you know we're
17:20running out of time i'm gonna use the heat gun to dry off a little bit because i'm hoping to turn it
17:25over and add the knob right knob this is where it can all go wrong you've got some options here giving
17:35myself a little knob shop a knob shop yep i'm saying nothing apparently i'm saying nothing
17:43potters half an hour left half an hour left potters
17:51some of the potters have chosen to throw last minute spares of their main tagine elements
17:57no no i've done too much here it's gone so they have a choice when they decorate and refine them
18:04okay emily what are we making another lid we don't like the other one it will hopefully do but it's
18:09not the straightest thing i think want to do one more oh okay bill don't you dare i'm just gonna throw
18:19one last lid what you doing just making another lid another lid yeah how many have you made three
18:34you're not doing spares are you mad although i doubt very much that you listen to anybody
18:39i don't well keep following your own path and get the clay to bend to your will thanks
18:47potters you've 10 minutes left i'm just gonna flip this i think and then it gives it chance for the
18:52underside to dry
19:01uh i've done that too thin
19:05yep i've just cut the bottom off that so
19:08and i've only got one of these it's not gonna work so i'm just gonna throw another one oh too much
19:19off how long have we got potters two minutes left no more faffing come on
19:23it's probably the fastest lid i've ever thrown this one oh my god it's quite light oh okay i'm
19:32gonna dry probably only one minute left now potters that's 30 seconds left 30 seconds finn put that
19:39in and get out do hurry up just a little lid do we have to put it in now can we come back no we have
19:45to put it in now 30 seconds this is so damn
19:5110 seconds sorry i'm normally a good girl you are normally a good girl
19:57thank you you're allowed one mistake thank you emily
20:01oh no nine eight seven six five four kaylee three two kaylee kaylee two one behind i'm so sorry
20:16crikey okay i'll go with the pants one honestly well done have a well-deserved rest and we'll see
20:22you in a bit potters dismissed the potters tagine pots and braziers will now have time to dry
20:29before they return to refine and decorate them i just cut through the bottom of my tagine base as
20:34i took it off i just had to throw a new one in literally the last three minutes oh my god yeah
20:41that was very fancy at the end that was uh quick the room felt really really tense it felt like
20:48everyone absolutely like working to their max i think my pots are slightly on the small side you
20:52know i think once one thing goes wrong on the wheel the self-doubt kicks in and then nothing goes my way
20:58i have no idea why i made so many pieces i've definitely got enough i've just got to select
21:02the one i really want now and uh what's that spice girl song um there is a lot to get done in the
21:08next stage i need to go away and make a good plan over lunch
21:12come on then guys now their tagines and braziers have had a chance to firm up have a nice graffiti
21:26time on the other side the potters can refine and decorate their pieces tools at the ready before
21:32they're fired for the first and only time welcome back potters as you can see your tagines have been
21:42drying and are now ready for refining and decoration keith any advice for our potters now we want your
21:49tagines to be decorated with bold colorful geometric patterns precision and care is really needed here
21:55with scraffito but remember it's really hard to correct any mistakes you'll be applying the white
22:01on go the colorful velvet underglazes directly onto the raw unfired clay now adding moisture to terracotta
22:08in this state is always risky so even drying is essential you have four hours to refine and decorate
22:16your tagine and your time starts now potters get decorating it's nice it feels nice the lid fits
22:26the bowl so that's good i want to straighten out this part here but it's my only one so i can't take
22:31a massive risk so i've sort of chosen the ones that are the best of the bunch basically ironically
22:37they're all the second things i threw the potters that have spares need to pick which items they're
22:42going to work with i have got two tagine bowls i prefer the gallery on this one i only had a spare
22:48lid and i've just got rid of that one if i make a mistake on scraffito i'll just have to
22:54make a design choice have you made your decision when it comes to bowls and lids and what have you
23:00yeah the base that i'd thrown originally that i thought i'd knackered up i think i've managed to
23:04salvage great oh i'm so glad i saw you at the very end there yeah it was nail-biting stuff i want it to
23:10have a real good classical like tagine shape where it's really straight but not all of the potters
23:15have made multiple pieces i don't have any spares you don't have any spares because you're a fearless
23:22potter who made one who communed with the muck yes what you doing now i'm just turning it to get that
23:29nice conical shape lovely and then i'm going to add my chosen knob
23:33i'm just blitzing with a heat gun just to give it a bit of a boost everything's quite wet still
23:42so hoping to get all the kind of turning and joining done in the first hour we've just got to
23:47be really careful because it's once fired that everything is the right consistency so lots to do
23:53this is going to look like the slowest kebab curling it's still very wet if it's still too damp
23:59it can collapse in on itself there's uneven drying which means risk of weaknesses in the thinner areas
24:05i mean i hope this is evenly trimmed but it might not be potters that's one hour gone jeez three hours
24:12left three hours left i need to hurry up now and get that white end go bond because that layer
24:17definitely has to be dry when their lids and bowls are leather hard i just need to dry this and get it
24:23the potters can apply a coat of engobe to their raw terracotta i need to get some engobe on that
24:31this base layer will help create a smooth surface for decoration it's going to be a lovely nice bright
24:36white base you do need to put a really thin layer on though and you have to let each layer dry in between
24:43thin and even layers are needed to avoid blistering it is quite thick finding it difficult to um put on
24:51thinly tell you what i might water it down as i put it on i don't know if that's right if applied too
24:56thick and not dry it can crackle and peel away just do it a little bit final layer i don't want to put
25:02any more on that looks like a nice coating on there yeah it's all right i think yeah good two coats
25:08well done carry on that is a mess that is an absolute mess i've got no time to play around has to be
25:14just right it's going to go in a drying room there so potters you're halfway through okay halfway
25:24through stressed about time as their bowls and lids dry ready for sgraffito while i'm waiting for bits
25:30to dry i thought i'd concentrate on the brazier the potters can refine their braziers which aren't being
25:36glazed are those attached i just need to get the angle right you do because it has to sit on there
25:41straight yeah nice and sturdy as long as you scratch the slip everything and it's well
25:45adhered on pieces aren't going to fall off any additional clay needs a strong bond i am slipping
25:51and scoring the base onto the brazier they're both about the same dryness so that's good to prevent
25:57cracking after firing are their tagines coming apart it's just really dry i might have left it in there
26:03for too long and some of the potters are taking a gamble around where i've attached the feet i think
26:09there could be cracks in it i'm hoping not added everything i needed to do for the brazier and
26:15what are you going to move on to now i'm going to start the go get it start the elusive task get it
26:23i want to see you scratch things scratch it there's no scratching i'm just going to like template it oh
26:33potters that's one hour left just kind of got to get on with it now suddenly realizing that i should be
26:38decorating really i'm dividing it into 12 because my pattern goes up and down so
26:48makes sense in my head so it means that there's actually six sections but i have to cut the six
26:54in half i know it doesn't make sense whatever method they use i don't even know if this is going
27:00to work to be honest with you the potters need to apply clear colorful geometric patterns to their
27:05to jeans so this is what i actually use to put tattoo stencils onto skin i still got to draw it but
27:11it will just replicate it this is really cheap foam and then i can draw on top of it they're
27:17tessellated patterns so it's a bit patchy oh my gosh colored underglazers will help the potter's designs
27:29come alive marrakesh bright and beautiful you could pick so many colors with this it's lovely in
27:35morocco everywhere's white and blue loads of little markets tagines absolutely everywhere color palettes
27:42are mainly blues blacks and orange and it's inspired by the nighttime blues and a nighttime black from the
27:49top of the mountain i'm just going for the brightest colors i can and i'm just going to band them on
27:54oh i think it could work this could work i might do two layers of the yellow then do the orange and
28:00then do the blue and just sort of just go round and round in circles basically i'll go around in
28:05circles well it's quite lumpy isn't it but if their glazes aren't applied smoothly the glaze has to be
28:12a thin coat and obviously an even application which is slightly harder when you're brushing with a brush
28:18their decoration could flake off when fired i put the green too high up so i kind of scraped it back
28:25i'm gonna have to adapt my plan a little bit i've just not got enough time so you're not going to
28:29incise out the natural terracotta are you yeah i was going to do that wasn't i honestly adapt your
28:37design to how much time you've left now if i just carve that out it doesn't have to dry does it no
28:42you're clever you are we got that on camera didn't we i'm clever i'm clever oh my gosh this is quite
28:52stressful i'm just a bit concerned that i am running out of time adapt your design yes we're just
29:00simplifying this is not what it looks like in my sketchbook okay we're just down to the wire great
29:04oh goodness i just heard siobhan say adapt your design and i'm not gonna change it i'll be proud
29:12when it's done potter's final 30 minutes oh yeah speedy speedy now finally starting on this graffiti
29:21you're basically going to scratch through the layers of underglaze and engode and it just reveals the
29:26terracotta underneath every mark the potters make needs to be clean and precise you don't want it too wet
29:32you'll just carve most of it out if it's too dry you won't be able to carve into it as it can't be
29:37redone this graffiti needs full concentration oh god oh this is lovely finally a bit of scratching
29:46i've got an itch though oh where yeah oh thank you that seems actually quite nice
29:55yep rushing rushing rushing rushing rushing
29:58potter's final 10 minutes oh my god probably two-thirds of the color that i was hoping to get
30:08on here two-thirds is better than none isn't it i feel like i've given this all the drying time in
30:13the world and it just hasn't managed to get there i wish i'd done something a bit smaller i'm about to
30:17start my glaze should have done it already one thin layer of transparent glaze oh make sure it's food
30:25safe there's not enough color on it bill take a deep breath i don't usually panic like this this is
30:30not me don't do that it's not good for you ah i need more ah two minutes left oh my god there's so
30:43much to do oh sugar i can't get it on the rim can i that'll do i've got paper paper well done guys it's
30:54just too wet to pick up kaylee it'll dry in the drying room oh in the drawing room sorry 10 seconds
31:04i'm so sorry i'm so sorry five four three two one well done well done my god
31:13wow congratulations partner is dismissed most brutal build ever so far in my life let alone the
31:31throw down yeah i almost didn't have the capacity in my brain to have a meltdown he got a bit of a shock
31:37at the last minute when i popped the lid on the tagine it fitted but it wasn't snug probably could
31:44have improved on just the sgraffito just a bit more steady-handedness yeah it's been a challenge
31:50definitely been a challenge
31:57there is a wheel
31:57the potters are back to face a mammoth second challenge but it's a biggie can't be that big
32:07that's like as tall as me which as ever is a total mystery welcome back potters for your second
32:17challenge and this week it's a throw down guest now as you've noticed emily isn't here she's not
32:25feeling too well but no rest for you lot to judge this challenge we have an old friend joining us
32:32please give a very warm pottery welcome from william blithe gabriel nichols come on gabe
32:41hello it's something big sorry
32:48renowned as the king of colossal throwing gabriel captivates online audiences crafting massive chimneys
32:54and pots using the same traditional methods the william blithe works have upheld for nearly two
33:00centuries this week you are making a chimney
33:08kaylee kaylee you have to look at it you have to make it i could get my leg in there this is what
33:13you're going to make and you're going to be making this in two sections because i haven't got time to
33:17dry the pots before i'm putting them together so i've got my base that i made earlier and my top and
33:22what i'm going to do is i'm going to throw the two sections and then i'll be putting those together
33:27so you're not going to actually do the chimney as well but what you are going to have to make sure
33:30is that this chimney fits onto the spigot what's a spigot the bit that fits inside the pipe is the
33:36spigot so weight wise this is eight kilos so i'm making the hole bringing out the base i'm now going to
33:45collar up bringing out the sides i want to see a wall thickness that is centimeter and a half this is
33:51something that's going to take a bit of heat would you consider this a large pot no this is a diddy
33:56most of my life i've spent working well in excess of 20 kilos is that all so i'm almost at my maximum
34:03width let's check that is that the way you measure them yeah don't worry you've got calipers okay so
34:10that's the bottom piece when you still got that on the wheel you want to use the heat gun on it stop it
34:14slumping this top piece it's got a hole in it so this you're just throwing as a ring and coming up
34:21so collar in again the top of that has to be the same as the top of that now i've got to join them
34:28so i've got my bottom section back on the wheel if you notice you've all got a bit of baling twine
34:33in front of you quite often when you put something on top the bottom section will just go out like
34:38that so this just holds the pot together we've fixed the top section with just a little bit of
34:42water on the rim when you do that be careful and you're going to wire off so when you're pulling the
34:51shape out of this you almost start at the top it's the diameter that counts more than anything
34:56the next stage get yourself a coil i'm just literally squeezing this onto the pop creating
35:03that flange around there okay what i want to see is a nice form a good collar on there
35:10good smooth ring of clay and hopefully the chimney will sit on top there
35:15great all right then potters back to your benches please oh my god i won't be sick again
35:23now this is going to be judge blind so you know what that means get out of here enjoy yourselves thank
35:29you good luck all right potters you have been given 45 minutes to make your chimney and your time starts
35:39now remove the hessian oh my god this cannot be real look at that i can't even lift it i have never
35:48thrown with eight kg before the biggest i've thrown with is about two and a half k i've joined a couple
35:55of pieces in the past but i mean this is just massive scale oh god how does he make it look so easy
36:05what do you think of the challenge do you know what i'm just buzzing to have seen gabriel in person
36:10honestly i think i was a little bit like fangirl then a little bit embarrassing but he's so cool
36:15isn't he just trying to center it it's rocking me off my chair oh my god bill have you already
36:21gone nice and neat i have done the last round before good for you i'm just going to go for a shape right
36:27now a big shape no no fear i'm not having old kaylee this is wild clay chaos kaylee i just want to bring
36:38it out another pull i think i'm trying to throw in a different way that i would usually look how much
36:43clay i'm losing though that's bad it needs to be so much taller okay that'll do i think first half is done
36:52oh starting my second one right this one is an open base if we're just coming up to the halfway
36:59through through halfway through there we are it's almost as if by magic flipping out i've just got
37:04to get it to match the width of it so it's bringing it out but not bringing it out too much nearly there
37:10and then i need to heat gun it off quite a bit i feel like i'm gonna be doing this for a while trying
37:16to get it right consistency it's crucial especially when putting that on to here the rim's a little bit
37:20soft on this so i just need to firm it up otherwise that's all going to crush under the weight of the
37:23lid this adds sort of like strength to the pot so when you put that big pot on top it's going to
37:28hold its structure don't do that i'm ready the flip yeah do you want to do it no oh my god look
37:36literally he's doing it oh yeah oh it's a thing of beauty to feel the heat coming from it already
37:47oh that's so good bill say a little prayer on it the more weight this up here is pushing down on
38:07the joint and i'm just trying to flare at eight before it collapses in on itself
38:15flip
38:19oh no switch off
38:20oh no oh dear i was nearly there as well i know oh no i can do now is there is there anything at
38:36all you no not really yeah oh i'm so sorry pal would you like a cup of tea i think that's probably a
38:45good idea yeah i put something in it yeah some rum or something yeah i'm just drying it off a little
38:51bit more just a bit paranoid now really can't let it collapse when that joins together passers you've
38:5710 minutes left now 10 minutes 10 minutes come on if i've got 10 minutes i'd have a bash at just
39:03throwing a big thing from scratch it's sagging i don't know how because i've given it so much heat
39:08i bound the two together where it's the weakest point i don't know how long it's going to hold up for
39:12though it's starting to slump so i don't even want to touch it don't worry because you've only two
39:17minutes left of this living hell that's ridiculous it's so thick on top it's cracking i've got both
39:25parts re-thrown there's not enough time for me to be able to dry them to be able to attempt to join
39:29them this isn't the right size up here i think this might be one of the best things i've ever made
39:3330 seconds potters it's just full-on collapsing i'm gonna be last look at that that's shocking
39:40failure is part of pottery exactly you put that up on your wear board with pride
39:4610 seconds that'll do better than handing nothing in isn't it five four three two
39:54one okay that's it mine's the ikea version flat pack right if you could bring your chimineeras
40:04up to the front gabriel will now blind judge the potter's chimineers
40:12this was a real challenge for anybody even an apprentice after three years wouldn't be on this
40:18weight of clay you've done amazingly well now he says you've done amazingly well i mean this is quite
40:25a decent shape your thickness is decent unfortunately there's not enough of a spigot on there for the
40:31chimney to put on and this is misshapen there but you know that's that's pretty well done this one
40:36you've got the top section here is not well thrown it's a bit thick and bit heavy bottom section is
40:41great the join is quite reasonable again you've not got the spigot on that's really good that's
40:47really nice and clean so this it's a shame you haven't got it together section wise you've got a
40:51bit too much for thickness at the bottom there a nice thick rim it's a good thickness of that i mean
40:56that's what we want is that sort of thickness in the rim just the whole thing should have been bigger
41:01and again this one you've not got the banding round you've got a lot of thickness here so that
41:06thickness should have been pulled up into forming the spigots but that's a great shape this one
41:12it's just collapsed unfortunately you've got a real thickness on the top here and this is probably
41:16actually thrown a little bit too thin which is why it's collapsed um it's a real shame
41:23so we've got one that i can actually try the chimney on which amazingly enough that fits
41:31quite a decent shape it's held the join's good yeah it's a decent pot well done all right then thank
41:37you very much there you go now are you feeling better about yourselves now gabriel will rank the
41:42potters from worst to first so number six i'll be my often great effort you haven't got them together
41:49there is a very good reason for that that's been attached to my uh stool the floor me and harrod is
41:57fifth and elham is fourth number three is this one ah navid this is great you've nearly finished it
42:05but it started to slump and there's no spigot on there this is number two kaylee yeah really well
42:11done missing the spigot but you've actually done quite well you've got that on it's a good effort
42:17and then number one that's bill well done you've got the spigot the shape's decent you've managed to
42:24get that on in terms of complete pop that's as near as we've got today well done thank you nice well
42:30yeah well done great i think we all need a cup of tea after that potter is dismissed thank you
42:39thank you very much thank you well done mate it's another first place there was some skill but it's
42:44mostly luck i think was on my side today that was fun wasn't it you know between that and putting
42:49a wire through the bottom of my tagine i've had a really good week these are challenges and meant
42:54to challenge you i've never thrown eight kilograms of clay before in my entire life the fact that i met him
42:58i am just made up honestly he throws the biggest things they were so excited there were loads of
43:05like oh my god i think he's great blah blah blah you got all these fans it's like hanging out with a
43:11kardashian it's judgment day do you know what it is what it is and the potters are about to find out
43:25how their tagines have fared after their only firing the raw glazing was a real challenge so i
43:31have no idea it's certainly less stressful than if i was around the bottom in the second challenge but
43:37i think anyone could still go depending on how the tagine goes oh okay much better than i thought
43:43actually i've got a bit of a crack here it's a little one though oh no it's a bigger one um it's just
43:50looking a little bit uh scaly on the application of the um of the ongoing did that survive oh my
43:56god that actually survived okay it's a bit messy sorry i'm a bit like overwhelmed no but this is
44:01great yeah it's not good oh yours has blistered as well fingers crossed i think the ongoing finish is
44:08really good i'm glad i watered it down there's lots of stuff i love about it but proportions are not
44:13quite right oh oh no i just a bit of my thing came off i'm just gonna place it on there and hope they
44:20don't notice seven terracotta tagines now face the judgment of keith and rich as emily's unwell
44:28they'll judge hers in her absence potters your tagines and braziers look really amazing i can't
44:36wait to see them properly so let's get on with the judging so first we're going to judge emily's
44:43first appearance it's really close to that iconic shape of a tagine very straight-sided
44:55the lid is a very good fit it sits on that gallery quite comfortably let's have a look at it
45:01yeah that's an amazing fit obviously there's been application issues with the ongo and then i would
45:06suggest that the color on there is a bit on the thick side i mean you know it's yeah the scruffito
45:12element it's a bit inconsistent but you get the understanding and the gist of the design which
45:17was all the seeds wasn't it yeah i just feel like a lot of the rims and the edges are just perhaps a
45:22little bit mean for something that's going to be in use during cooking
45:33well you've done a pretty good job it fits okay it's not a bad size but what i really do love is that
45:39you've got these lovely i mean these are really substantial and you've managed to sculpt them
45:44around the rim and yet you haven't really distorted the form of what they are which is wonderful overall
45:50they are a little bit on the weighty side but i think actually you've judged it about right because
45:54they are for cooking but i think the thing that i find so striking is the quality of line with this
46:00graffiti it's fantastic loving i mean you've got that same quality of line adorning yourself the fact
46:05that every line is the same gauge the same consistency and not only that but the same depth
46:10yeah there's a few things that you could improve on but it's brilliant lovely well done cheers
46:22the brazier it's got a nice depth to it and a nice height to it it's unfortunate that it's cracked
46:28slightly but you know it's very very clean making and it's it's nice and stable it's very stable yeah
46:34just remind me what with the saffron flowers what's really nice about them is that they're
46:39quite sculptural and delicate and yet oh oh did you just break it you did just break it yeah they're
46:45really striking sorry about that well the two others are yeah yeah it's got to be user friendly
46:52obviously that one wasn't you've got some cracks on the inside there in fact you've got quite a few
47:06cracks going on but you know the throwing on the tagine is very good that's a lovely even wall thickness
47:11i mean on gob it does look very very thick on that surface yeah um the the the scruffito marks are a
47:19little bit inconsistent but you know i really like the use of the color it's really bright
47:23it's indicative of africa and your goats work really well
47:35how many times did you have a go at doing the tagine lid about about four times yeah the tagine
47:41it could be slightly bigger it's very bold scruffito some of the lines are a little bit thicker than
47:46others but the application of the ongoing is actually very good the brazier yeah just a bit
47:51small mate you know you can hold it really easily just bigger does it go on the brazier let's have
47:57a look shall we oh look at that it's good that it kind of fits comfortably in the hand because you'll
48:01be taking it on and off putting more coal on one piece at a time with a set of tweezers really yeah
48:07really good cold yeah great idea just a bit bigger
48:18i have to say you seem to sort of improve every week you really do seem to improve
48:24that's really good to see it and you only made one didn't you i just wanted to give everything to the
48:29one set i'm keen to see if it fits on the brazier and how it looks okay really yeah nice this is really
48:34substantial a lovely gallery there i really love the design when you look down it almost creates a
48:40sort of a flat surface and it's worked really well and the measuring is very very accurate you've
48:45predominantly gone with that traditional scruffito and you've got this color as kind of little hints
48:49little highlights and draw the eye it really works it's that lovely classic tagine shape which is what
48:55we were looking for well done yeah nice work how do you feel about it a bit disappointed just because
49:09of the cracks in the brazier and i think the application of the engobe like the tagine lid's
49:13a bit thick in places but actually this graffito is very smooth to the touch so it's finished very nicely
49:19and you've done well to get towards that traditional shape and a very snug fit with the lid but it's a
49:24shame about the brazier it's a bit on the old thin side there you've obviously got that classic join
49:30crack as a brazier it would ergonomically work really well but just making the brazier a bit
49:35more substantial well done thank you very much thank you well done that's great thank you folks this week
49:44has been hard you know we throw these things at you and you always deliver so well done well done this week
49:53has definitely been the most stressful week out of all of them i don't really want to go home but
49:58you know i have to go home i have to go home i think they liked it like it's really nice for me to
50:04have that feedback so that's a really really nice feeling because i was worried no one has sort of
50:10smashed it out of the park it's going to be a difficult one to call i'll have to wait and see
50:15okay what a week look at your faces why has this week been very difficult terracotta works in such a
50:28different way to other clays with that terracotta we're raw firing which is notoriously challenging
50:35in its own right how do you think our potters have met that challenge with a modicum of success
50:40yeah yeah i would say no single potter has kind of met the brief entirely let's start with elham
50:47she's the only one who only made one option of each of the oceans yeah her form was probably the
50:53most representative of that classic shape she's created the scraffito with that very dark terracotta
50:58underneath and it was very precise you know she's leaning into the things that she really likes like
51:03the geometric design okay let's go on to finn how do you think he got on with his decoration the quality
51:09of the scraffito probably one of the best in there to get those wonderful shapes was just really really
51:15lovely and his brazier was really nice yeah one of the few potters that managed to get something onto
51:19the brazier that felt like it was part of the decoration but still practical all right then navid with his
51:25moroccan shoes how did he get on it was really nicely executed it just could have been a bit bigger
51:30bill with his ray of sunshine decoration and his goat handled brazier there was a little bit of
51:38inconsistency in the thickness of line of the scraffito the ongoing was applied a little bit
51:42thickly that lid was a bit too straight all right the second challenge bill came first yeah and i would
51:49say a very clear first then we look at his main challenge look at his brazier i lost fingers on my
51:54hand with the amount of cracks on it all right we also were missing a posture for the second challenge
51:59poor emily has not been feeling well how does this affect things it's already difficult to figure out
52:04who's up there let alone who might leave okay so who is in line for potter of the week i think for
52:10me it would be about who's ticked most of the boxes i would say elham is definitely up yeah and also
52:16finn those two were probably you know would you agree yeah who's in danger um yeah it's gonna be our
52:24decision isn't it rich great really tough really tough you've all worked incredibly hard and we have
52:44seen the skill that you've displayed there has been a very very difficult week for the judges but they
52:50have made their decisions this week's potter of the week is elham
53:07i just never thought that would happen thank you you've come on so so much lovey it's really
53:13inspiring to see thank you well done now the difficult bit this was an incredibly difficult
53:21decision to make the potter who is leaving the pottery this week is
53:26no one yeah no one are you pleased or disappointed i can't tell it was so hard to call because you
53:46all excelled in certain places and didn't excel in others well it's the fact that emily not being here
53:52doesn't feel fair to judge especially when you missed out on the joy of what will now be the
53:57infamous second challenge with the wild play so none of you go home yay well done
54:06absolutely awesome like i just did not expect it we felt like we couldn't justify sending any of our
54:13potters home so we just felt we needed to keep them all in in order to give them another chance really
54:19oh well in shock they've given me potter of the week like that's crazy for me it was how much
54:28you've learned over the course of the six weeks absolutely brilliant i don't think i'd done enough to
54:37save myself yeah i guess pressure is on week seven as all the potters look forward to returning to the
54:44pottery next week elham's to jean and brazier revel in the spotlight of the throwdown gallery
54:51guess what go on i got potter of the week no you didn't i did are you being serious yeah that is
55:00absolutely amazing next time week seven ready to go flower power things get much lighter and brighter
55:08with flower posies that's a toothbrush that is a toothbrush what are you doing and the potters
55:14face an artistic spot test wow i got the fleur-de-lis in my head i'm sorry france if you see this
55:21who will bloom into life they're like rustic char and whose hopes will wilt on the spot
55:38so
55:46so
55:48you
