Learn how to create Hierarchical Chart in Excel Using Visio for Free.
We will be using Microsoft Visio Data Visualizer add-in for this. It is free and Visio license or subscription is not required.

To create an org chart from Excel data in Visio, you can follow these steps: first, ensure that your Excel data is well-structured with columns for employee names and their respective managers. Then, open Visio and go to the "File" menu, select "New," and choose the "Organization Chart Wizard" to import your Excel data. As for creating a hierarchy chart in Excel, you can use the SmartArt Graphics feature to easily represent hierarchical relationships between different elements or individuals. Microsoft Visio indeed works seamlessly with Excel, allowing you to import and synchronize data for various chart types. To create an organizational hierarchy chart, open Visio and select the "Organization Chart" template. Next, import data from Excel or manually add shapes to represent positions and link them accordingly. Regarding Microsoft's support for Visio, it is advisable to check their official website for the most current information on Visio's support status, as it may vary over time.

00:00Have you ever struggled with updating hierarchical chart in Excel that was
00:03originally created using smart art? I can relate and it's a common challenge that
00:06many people have faced. However, there's a solution. Enter Visio add-in for Excel
00:11which can make live updates a breeze. Take a look at this. You start off by
00:15adding a Visio add-in. Go to developer tab. If the developer tab is not there, I'll
00:19leave an instruction on how you can enable the developer tab. Once you're in
00:22there, go to add-ins. In the add-ins, you're gonna click on store and then
00:25you're gonna look for something called Visio and hit enter here and you're
00:28gonna select add Visio add-in and continue and after that you have this
00:31continue without signing in and then make sure you select it on the org chart and
00:35select say vertical to create one and then resize and reposition it. Once
00:39that's complete, let's populate this table with your own data. Copy from here.
00:43This is my pre-entered data into this. You do get a data check error here because
00:48this thing is not matching up with this. Then assign each of your employee with
00:52the reporting manager and once that's done, hit refresh and you can see that the
00:56org chart get updated according to what the reporting manager is. Let's zoom in a
01:00bit to see and validate and verify. And now let me demonstrate why Visio add-in
01:04is much better than the smart art objects. Like the smart art object, the Visio, you
01:09can actually go ahead and delete some of this role here. If you did delete and hit
01:13refresh, you can see that this particular section of the org chart get updated
01:17according now. There's only two guys reporting to Solomon. But the beauty of this
01:21is that let's say if you were to change a role here, let's say for example if I go
01:24Marilyn to James Dean like this and hit enter and you hit refresh, you can see
01:30that Marilyn name has been changed to James Dean. That's one thing that I like
01:34about this object here. You don't really have to manually make changes on the org
01:39chart itself. What do you think? What are the advantage and disadvantage of using
01:42this video adding?
