00:00Okay, I get it. I get it. Welcome out to Essence Festival of Culture right here with Disney. Round of applause, please.
00:07Now, you know, we see a lot of things that happen at the parks, right? We have a good time when we go to the parks.
00:13But let's take a peek behind the scenes and take it to the C-suite, to that executive level.
00:19Now, we have women who are in power there who refuse to dim their lights, who continuously spread joy and let their lights shine.
00:28We're going to welcome to our stage, Disney executives, Sybil Crump and Sivan Davis.
00:36Come on, ladies.
00:46Let me see you strut, ladies. Come on out. Make that power walk to the boardroom. Hey, hey, hey.
00:54We love it. We love it. Welcome out, Sybil.
00:58Thank you. Thank you for having us.
00:59Welcome, Sybil.
01:01All right. So, it is just an amazing thing to see women represented for such a national major company like that.
01:09And great to have you on the Essence stage today.
01:12Can you tell us a little bit about what you do, your titles and all of the responsibilities that you have?
01:18Because we don't see this behind the scenes. We just go to the park and think that it all works.
01:22But you guys are there to handle business.
01:23Absolutely. So, I am Sybil Crump, the vice president of marketing and commercial strategy for the Disneyland Resort.
01:30Yes.
01:32Oh, you have a team. Wait a minute.
01:33That's right.
01:34I didn't know you had your own cheering squad.
01:35We came to play.
01:37Disneyland Resort is the happiest place on earth, located in California.
01:41And, you know, marketing is actually just the business of letting people know about your product.
01:45Right.
01:45And commercialization is how we make money. And we like to make money.
01:49I know. That's right. And what about you, Syvonne?
01:51Well, thank you, Deja.
01:53You know, my name is Syvonne Davis, vice president of marketing strategy at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
02:00Yes! Yes! Yes!
02:02But, you know, building on Sybil's comment, I believe my real title should be Walt Disney World Welcoming Chair.
02:11Really?
02:12And it's simply because my team and I, we're really focused on creating and extending the invitation.
02:18It's like advertising. We're inviting you to come and enjoy the experiences and then share your joy.
02:26And what does it mean for us to celebrate soulfully?
02:30Well, you know, I think that celebrate soulfully is an intentional invitation.
02:36And more importantly, it was created for us by us.
02:39And I will tell you, it was created by this beautiful woman to my left.
02:42So I think no one would be better to tell you about it than Syvonne.
02:48Go ahead, girl.
02:49I am honored.
02:50To work with Ms. Crum is just amazing.
02:54She is one of the people who has helped create the pathway for things like Celebrate Soulfully to come and to be.
03:02So I'm going to start there and just give that right back to you.
03:04Aww.
03:06I'm also going to give it to some of the folks in the audience.
03:08I know we're mindful of time, but I also believe in giving respect and acknowledgement where it's due.
03:14And so when I see people like Jill Astorino right there in the pink in the front, and I see others on the team from both Disneyland and Walt Disney World teams,
03:24I want to take the moment to give them a shout out.
03:27But Celebrate Soulfully is exactly that.
03:29It's about celebrating black culture, black joy, black heritage, uplifting and showcasing a great talent.
03:37Because ultimately, people want to be seen and people want to feel seen.
03:41And that's what Celebrate Soulfully is at the heart all about.
03:45Love it.
03:45And so what does that look like, that celebration at Disneyland Resort?
03:49So at Disneyland, it's about uplifting musical celebrations.
03:52And it's during times that are really important for us.
03:55It's about, you know, you think about those milestone moments, whether it's Black History Month, you think about Black Music Month in June.
04:01But it's also throughout the entire year, we are celebrating our culture, we're celebrating our heritage, we're celebrating our music, we're celebrating our legacy.
04:11In fact, Walt Disney Imagineering did something really special with the Lincoln Theater.
04:16We have a special exhibit that honors the legacy of Frederick Douglass.
04:21And what's really great about that exhibit is that we know that Frederick Douglass was instrumental in helping to free enslaved people.
04:28And so we partnered with the National Geographic to tell that story in a really compelling way.
04:36And so what we love about it is that it helps every visitor that comes to Disneyland that comes in to see that exhibit to understand the true story of how Frederick Douglass really worked with Abraham Lincoln as a champion of change to change the course of American history.
04:51And in fact, I'd love to show you a bit of a clip because it's really powerful.
04:54Yeah, let's do it.
04:56Watch the screens.
04:58Frederick Douglass never had a pair of pants or shoes until he was about six or seven years old.
05:04He would sleep headfirst in an old corn sack with his feet hanging out on cold winter nights to try and keep himself warm.
05:12Teaching the enslaved to read was illegal.
05:15So young Frederick secretly traded what little food he had in exchange for reading lessons.
05:21It just shows how much he understood how education was going to be his key to freedom.
05:26And a key to freedom, it was.
05:29At the age of 20, Douglass made a daring escape and went north, settling in Massachusetts.
05:37There he soared.
05:39From orator.
05:40The one cannot be truly free while the other is a slave.
05:44To newspaper editor.
05:47Truth is of no color.
05:49And best-selling author.
05:51From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom.
05:57He was the central voice of the abolitionist movement.
06:00He had this natural gift for communication.
06:02He was eloquent.
06:04He was charismatic.
06:04There wasn't a venue, a building large enough to hold people who wanted to hear him.
06:15Wow, that's impactful.
06:16That's impactful.
06:18Now, Sivan, how does that celebration go for you at Disney World?
06:23You know, Deja, when Celebrate Soulfully started at Walt Disney World about four years ago now,
06:32and it was all about reflecting joy.
06:35Reflecting joy in the people, reflecting joy in the culture,
06:39really reflecting the most magical place on earth.
06:43You know, as I think about how it has grown over the last nearly four years,
06:47it's grown to include not only black talent in the community,
06:52but also black talent in our employees, who we call CAST.
06:58It's spotlighting great talent like our black chefs through our Cooking with Soul program,
07:04which is all about making sure you know where to find the best collard greens at Walt Disney World,
07:09no matter where you are.
07:11Wait, wait, wait.
07:11Yes, that's important.
07:12Hold on.
07:13Pause for a second.
07:13Did you say collard greens?
07:15Collard greens.
07:16At Walt Disney World.
07:16Walt Disney World.
07:18Who would have thunk, right?
07:19I love it.
07:20I love it.
07:21All right, now, since we have all of this celebration going on,
07:24and we're talking about joy, audience members, we have a little surprise.
07:27Who loves surprises?
07:29Yes.
07:30Listen, some people think surprises are just for the little kiddos.
07:33Baby.
07:33No, no, no, no.
07:34So, since you're spending time with us today, you've got to be Disney fans.
07:38Sybil, Syvonne, I want each of you to come over here and pick a number from our raffle.
07:43We're going to spin it around.
07:46Pick a number, pick a number, any number.
07:50All right, we'll spin it again.
07:55Okay.
07:56Uh-oh.
07:58All right.
07:59So, all the folks out there, you have a number on your chair.
08:04So, get ready.
08:06Get ready.
08:09Let's read that number.
08:10Let's go.
08:11Sybil, what you got?
08:12I've got 156.
08:14Number 156.
08:16Stay in your own seats.
08:19Where?
08:20156.
08:21156.
08:21Oh, my gosh.
08:22Okay, 156.
08:23See the people with the white gloved hand, the Mickey hand, right there.
08:27They'll help you out.
08:28And next?
08:30264.
08:32264.
08:33Number 264.
08:35Anybody has that number.
08:38Anybody.
08:39Anybody.
08:42Nobody has that one.
08:43Okay, let's spin again.
08:44Come on.
08:45Big money, big money.
08:46There we go.
08:5191.
08:5191.
08:5391.
08:56Number 91.
08:59Oh, there you go, right there.
09:00We have a winner.
09:01All right, come on over here.
09:02See them waving.
09:04The white Mickey glove.
09:05All right.
09:06Now, have a seat, ladies.
09:07I'm not letting you go yet.
09:08I want to talk to you more about being an executive.
09:12How has it been, and how have you been able to use this influence,
09:16your seat at the table, as they say, Sybil?
09:19Well, I think it's about representing the voices of people who can't be in the room.
09:24And so, for me, it's the opportunity to create product that is created for us.
09:28Right.
09:28It's the opportunity to influence decisions that are important to people who look like me.
09:34It's the opportunity to create product for families that reflect my own family and my own experiences.
09:40I've been coming to the parks since I was born.
09:44My family is from South Florida.
09:46All right.
09:47So I came to Walt Disney World as a kid, and most black families don't have that experience.
09:51And so, to be able to come as a child and to see this product reflected for people like me is really important.
09:57And representation, that's the word.
09:59That's the theme.
10:01Syvonne, when you see black families, what do you hope they take away and experience while they are there at the parks?
10:07Well, you know, one of my personal favorite quotes is from the incomparable Maya Angelou, and it ends in, you never forget how they made you feel.
10:17Yes.
10:17So when I think about black families coming into Walt Disney World Resort, I want them to feel like they belong, that they're welcomed, they were invited, and their magic helps make Walt Disney World so magical.
10:35We love it.
10:36Now, it's time to bring out our gift recipients.
10:40Do we have them yet?
10:41Yes.
10:43Okay, okay.
10:44Come on down.
10:46Woo-hoo.
10:46Woo-hoo.
10:48So we love learning all about celebrating soulfully at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
10:53And we're going to keep talking about it.
11:00And we'll tell them what they've won.
11:06Those are our recipients.
11:07Tell them what they've won, ladies.
11:09So, you will be coming to the Disneyland Resort with a family of four, and we would love to have you.
11:18And you will also be getting a trip to Walt Disney World for you and three other guests, so a family of four.
11:26All-inclusive paid trip.
11:28Both of these ladies get both vacations.
11:32Wow.
11:33That is amazing.
11:34One each.
11:35One each.
11:35One will go to Disney World.
11:37One will go to California.
11:38It is going to be amazing.
11:41We cannot wait for that.
11:42Congratulations, ladies.
11:44Congratulations.
11:44Welcome.
11:45They just sat down in a seat and walked away winners, right?
11:48And, ladies, thank you for sitting at the seat at that table and representing for us in the way that you have with Walt Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.
11:56We appreciate it, and we can't wait to see what else you all bring to the table.

18:46thank you so you're gonna tell us so you're gonna tell us a little bit about the Disney vacations around the globe what sets this apart from the vacation experiences the the what sets them apart
18:53wow it is first of all thanks for having us here we are so excited to be here we are so excited to be here we are so excited to be here and I'll tell you the difference I mean we have such fantastic experiences in our parks and our parks
19:00and our resorts
19:19but this is a way to be able to experience Disney outside of parks and resort
19:20this is a way to be able to experience Disney outside of the parks and resorts
19:27the outside of the parks and resorts. And I don't think a lot of us think about that. So what is the
19:32Disney Vacation Club? Is that just for guests who want to go to the parks or is it broader? Yeah, I
19:38mean, Disney Vacation Club is a phenomenal way to be able to see each and every one of our parks
19:43from around the world, which is fabulous. But the reality is through Disney Vacation Club, as a
19:50member, you can go and experience the world in so many different ways. You can go to places within
19:57the country, outside of the country, Mexico, Las Vegas, all around the world. You can do that as
20:03a member. That is amazing. Okay, so one word keeps going through my head, majestic expeditions. Is
20:10there a difference between Adventures by Disney and National Geographic Expeditions? Oh, that is a
20:17great question. I want to tell you a little bit about Adventures by Disney. So Adventures by Disney
20:22is a legendary guided experience. And so you may not know what a guided experience is, but you have an
20:28opportunity to go with a small group around to a destination and have an opportunity to really
20:35experience what that is in that country, wherever you are. So through Adventures by Disney, you have
20:41that ability to do it with very, very seasoned adventure guides that takes you to places that you
20:48may know and in places that aren't really on the beaten path, but only Adventures by Disney can do
20:54that. And if you want to know the difference between National Geographic Expeditions and Adventures by
21:00Disney, National Geographic Expeditions. Well, first of all, let me ask this question. Does anybody know
21:07National Geographic? Oh my gosh, of course. We all love Nat Geo. All right, of course. 134 years they have been in place.
21:16And so you have to think about the storytelling that can happen there and the adventure that happens
21:21there. And only National Geographic Expeditions can bring that to life just for you. That sounds amazing.
21:27In 80 different destinations, all over seven continents, including Antarctica. And you get an
21:35opportunity to experience all of that through National Geographic Expeditions. Okay, so where are we going?
21:40Because I'm ready. I got my passport. I know you are. I'm ready. Those sound like some really big
21:47adventures. How about before we do this, can we bring out a special guest to help us with our next
21:54travel? Yes, yes, yes. All right. From Disney's Aladdin on Broadway, please welcome back Michael James Scott.
22:03Yeah. Come on over here. Oh, he's changed. Look at this. He's coming on the outfit. Costume change. Yes.
22:14Hello, lovely ladies. Hello. Hello. Look at this. All right. Now, you know he's from Broadway's Aladdin.
22:21He plays the genie on Aladdin. Michael, do you know why we brought you out here?
22:26Well, I guess probably because I'm a huge Disney Cruise Line fan. Yes, yes, yes. But I would think
22:34that's somewhat of a part of it because Disney Cruise Line is everything and it's iconic. I mean,
22:40the ship is iconic. Absolutely. All of the ships are. Absolutely. Absolutely. But before we talk about
22:45that, you play the genie on Broadway. It's time to work a little Disney magic. Okay. So are you
22:50going to grant some wishes around here? I think we might be granting some epic wishes. Oh, okay. Now,
22:56wait. On to you. So, let's see. Let's see. Why don't you do this for us? Okay. Well, first of all,
23:04who likes to travel? Oh, now they have energy. I have that question. Who likes adventures more importantly?
23:12Okay, okay, okay. That's good to see. But we have to narrow it down. So, Michael. Yes. Do you mind
23:18coming over here and absolutely pulling three numbers from there? Three. Just three. Three
23:27numbers. Think your number. Think your number. Think your number. Okay, everybody. Think about a
23:32number. Think about a number. First one. Call it out. Go ahead. 168. Number 168.
23:39158. Front and center. Now, look for our friends with the white glove right there. They're going to help
23:46you out. Come on, Jeannie. Make your wishes come true. 251. 251. Come on. Come on. Go over here,
23:56right here to our friends with the white glove Mickey hand. 29. That's my age. 29. And I'm holding.
24:0729. Right over here. Oh, my gosh. Those are the three. Now, you three go off with our friends in the
24:15audience. Don't forget to come back. Michael, tell us a little more about your connection with
24:21Disney Cruise Line again. Oh, gosh. Well, I recently got to do something pretty amazing. I was a part of
24:28the first national commercial for Disney Cruise Line and as the voice for the commercial for the newest,
24:37biggest ship that they have, The Wish. Wow. Wow. Disney Wish. So that's me on the commercial singing
24:42this, the incredible, A Dream is a Wish. Okay. Okay. Wait. Uh-oh. This who was singing that song,
24:50Michael James Scott. Give it up for him. Woo! It really was so special. And it's also,
24:57it can be seen in some of the movie theaters before the movies. So it's, it was, it was pretty
25:02special. My connection with the Disney Cruise Line is, it's a beautiful part of the company that I
25:08just love dearly. That's awesome. Tracy, did you have a question for me? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. So
25:12you have to tell us. So you've been on a cruise. And so for those that have never been on a cruise,
25:17what's the best thing about a Disney cruise? Oh, gosh. There's so much, there's so much. I mean,
25:23obviously the, the, well, one of the things is the kids, they, they're going to be away. They're
25:28going to be in their own worlds, which is, you know, so they can have their thing. And then the,
25:31and then the, and then the parents can go do their thing. But the most amazing thing is the family
25:36connections. I feel like there's such amazing moments that happened on the cruise and also the
25:42shows. There are some incredible stage shows that are on that ship that are, I mean, truly world-class,
25:50amazing, amazing, amazing. And of course that's what, I mean, that's what I want to, I want to be there.
25:55Yeah. So this is like that Broadway style. Exactly. Exactly. And Tracy, what do you love
26:00about Disney Cruise Line? Oh, wow. I could go on and on and on, but let me just tell you a little
26:04bit. I love the fact on Disney Cruise Lines, like no other, we have things for the young, as far as our
26:12young guests and those that are young at heart. And let me tell you a little, a little bit about it from
26:17the kids point of view. We have kids programming, to your point, that is fabulous. They have an
26:23opportunity to really immerse themselves in this kid programming. And one in particular is about
26:29the Marvel, Marvel story. And so they really immerse themselves in that Marvel story. And Black
26:35Panther is right there cheering them along. Wakanda forever. Absolutely. Wakanda forever. Along with that,
26:42they have story time and arts and crafts with Rapunzel and Belle and so many others. So they
26:48have such a great time, but I have to say adults get a chance to play too.
26:53Okay, Belle. They get an opportunity to have adult only, and please note, these areas, no kids
27:00allowed, where they have a chance to have their own pools, lounges, bars, restaurants. Just for the grownups?
27:06Just for the grownups. Just for the grownups. Come on now. It is phenomenal. I love it. And I have to also say
27:13that you mentioned Disney Wish, which is our newest ship. We're super excited about it. But our fleet
27:19is growing. Really? And it's growing because we have Disney Treasure coming out in 2024.
27:27Oh. A new one? And we have our seventh ship that is under development. So we have so much going on in Disney Cruise Line.
27:35Absolutely. Okay. They've been using the time wisely. Oh, yeah. So, question. We got to lean in. We got to lean in.
27:41When are we going? When are we going? Because I'm ready. I am ready. Well, you have to talk to my people.
27:46All right, fine. You know what? I might know your people, and I know the mouse, and I know there's a gloved hand that we were talking to.
27:52Where are our winners? Are they all set and ready? Okay. Well, we're going to welcome them back.
27:59And we want you to come up here. Play a little game.
28:05Well, come as close as you can come. Play the game. As close as you can come.
28:10And here's what you're going to do. When it's your turn, you're going to reach into that bag and grab out something.
28:18Your wish is about to come true. No peeking, all right? Go ahead.
28:23Boom. Next. Boom. Next. Boom. Next. All right.
28:36All right. So, what I would love for you to do, this beautiful young woman. Let's see. Raise up what you have in your hand.
28:44Okay. Got it.
28:49It looks like a little bird.
28:50Yes, it looks like a little bird.
28:51Yes.
28:52So, you know, I think those are very nice gifts. I'm glad that you were one of the ones to receive the gifts because it's really exciting.
28:59But, of course, Disney would never allow you just to have those.
29:05So, that wonderful parrot that you have in your hand will not only be yours, but you'll have an opportunity for an all-expense-paying trip on Adventures by Disney to Costa Rica!
29:20Come on! Come on, Disney! Come on!
29:25Yo, Disney! Come on!
29:27Right! Right! Come on!
29:28Yes!
29:28Come on, Disney! Come on, Disney!
29:30Congrats!
29:31Okay. All right.
29:32Congrats, congrats. Okay. Second. What do you have in your hand?
29:36Oh, look at beautiful Simba!
29:39Oh, yes!
29:40Oh, my gosh. Now, let's see. Hmm. I believe. What do you think, Michael? I think.
29:47I definitely. I know where you're going. I know where you're going.
29:49That you should get an all-expense-pay trip on National Geographic Expeditions to Kenya!
29:59Oh, my God!
30:01She's going to the motherland!
30:03She's going to the motherland!
30:04Come on, now!
30:04Go to the motherland!
30:05What? You better hold baby Simba up! Hold him up!
30:09Yes!
30:10Okay, next prize. That's right.
30:12Last, but definitely not least.
30:15We are not going to have...
30:16Oh, you have a Mickey.
30:18Oh, isn't that sweet?
30:19Oh!
30:20Oh!
30:20Beautiful!
30:21Oh!
30:22Well, we can't let you go home without having an all-expense-paid trip on a Disney crew!
30:29Yes!
